agles Pride Golf Course has

earned the prestigious Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary Program certification. With the Audubon certification, you’re assured a superb golf course experience with an extended focus on protecting the environment. The certification was given in recognition of the JBLM golf course’s extraordinary care of the environment. Certification categories include Environmental Planning, Water Quality Management, Water Conservation, Wildlife Habitat Management, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, and Outreach and Education. Eagles Pride is the second Army course out of four DoD courses to earn the certification. Eagles Pride wants you to know about the exciting things they’re doing to protect and preserve the natural environment enjoyed by golfers. “Every day we show our commitment to environmental stewardship by following the primary goal of ‘Do No Harm.’ Everything we do is aimed at protecting and improving the environment,” says David Wienecke, part of the conservation team and EMS plan manager. For example, since summer, Eagles Pride has reduced waste sent to the 12

landfill by 80 percent by recycling paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, metal (aluminum and ferrous metal), waste oil, antifreeze and tires. Next spring, the golf course invites both golfers and non-golfers on wildlife and bird walks to see firsthand the diversity of wildlife, including more than 55 birds, mammals and other animal species, 40 tree and shrub species and 28 herbaceous plant species found on 431 acres. The clubhouse will display a map overview of the entire golf course, including wildlife areas. As you cover the course, you’ll see informational signs identifying tree and wildlife species, wetlands and areas that are being restored, plus historical points of interest. You’ll be encouraged to help identify and record any wildlife you come across in your golf course experiences. More than half the acreage is native Douglas Fir-Hemlock forestland, and five water basins cover the area. The golf course is less than a half-mile from the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge and Nisqually estuary, making Eagles Pride both a natural habitat area and a wildlife corridor. Golfers have reported seeing deer, coyotes, rabbits, red-legged frogs, bald eagles, red-tail hawks and other wildlife.

The golf course is planning 49 projects in the next three to six years to improve environmental health and golf course quality, including: • Reducing chemical use in maintaining turf health. • Removing invasive species. • Recycling storm debris. • Routinely testing water quality of the water basins on the property to monitor storm and irrigation water runoff. • Reducing irrigation water even more than the current 20-percent reduction by installing on-site water-measuring stations. • Expanding vegetation buffer zones around lakes to filter and protect water quality. • Expanding wildlife habitat while reducing energy, pollution, labor and fuel needed to maintain it. • Taking part in a jointly sponsored research project with Washington State University, JBLM’s Directorate of Public Works and Directorate of Family & MWR to assess and measure soil microbiology and determine if composting can work to increase turf health and reduce disease. Look for continuing developments in future issues of Focus magazine and by visiting Eagles Pride Golf Course.

Feelin’ good

Finding time to exercise during Plus, quick & easy ways By Lynn Larson, Army Wellness Center Nurse Educator

A

s another year comes to an end, we’ll celebrate with parties, goodies and holiday dinners. Trying to keep fit or lose some extra pounds can be a challenge. Here are some of my favorite tips to keep you on track.

Eat like a king for breakfast, a prince for lunch and a pauper for dinner. There are two reasons this philosophy works. First, you expend the majority of your energy during the day, which is when your body needs calories. Second, you go home feeling satisfied, not hungry (so it’s much easier to control your eating). Make yourself a small dinner or snack. If you still want more, slice an apple and mix some PB2, a great alternative to peanut butter. It’s a peanut powder you mix with water — and it tastes just like peanut better. PB2 has 45 calories for 2 tablespoons instead of 200 calories for regular peanut butter! It’s sold in the Commissary next to the peanut butter.

Drink, drink, drink! I’m not talking eggnog! The more fluids you drink, the fuller you’ll feel. Avoid diet drinks so you don’t stimulate your craving for sweets. An easy way to put more water into your day is to cut a lemon, lime or pineapple wedge and muddle it with a wooden spoon in the bottom of your pitcher. Fill the pitcher with ice and water. You can refill the pitcher several times with water and still taste a light flavoring of fruit. You can also drink tea — look for one with no artificial sweeteners and try it both hot and cold. I like Market Spice Tea, which has no calories and a cinnamon-sweet flavor. Store your tea in the freezer to keep it from turning bitter.

Avoid processed and fast foods. Increase your intake of whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables. Keep a ratio of 20 percent fruits to 80 percent vegetables. Try this for a great hot dish: slice Enlist a workout buddy — your spouse or a friend — to get exercising. Wear layers and get outside on a crisp winter day, head to the indoor track at Jensen Family Health & Fitness Center or try a free fitness class (see the schedules at right).

a busy time of year  to avoid the holiday pounds tomatoes, zucchini or other vegetables and spray with an olive oil spray. Roll the veggies in whole wheat bread crumbs and place in a glass baking dish. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and bake at 425 degrees for 10–20 minutes.

Enjoy soup. Soup is both nutritious and increases your fluid intake. There are many healthy and inexpensive (and often easy!) recipes for low-calorie soups — find them online, in cookbooks and via smartphone apps. As it helps suppress your appetite, consider enjoying a big bowl before heading out to a holiday gathering. It’ll keep you full and warm.

Exercise! Many individuals in the MicroFit

program simply walk. Take a brisk walk outside, or check out the indoor track at the recently remodeled Jensen Family Health & Fitness Center at Lewis Main. Another great way to get exercising? Make a date at the gym with your sweetie or best friend; hit the cardio equipment or lift weights together or try a fitness class — they’re free, fun and the schedules are listed below. You’ll have fun, keep control of your weight and feel great. Enjoy the holidays. And remember, January is just around the corner — get a jump start on your New Year’s resolutions! Larson, RN BSN MA, works at the Army Wellness Center at Jensen Family Health & Fitness Center. For more information, call 253-966-3757. ASK THE MONEY EXPERTS are the advantages of Q: What investing in our Roth TSP?

A:

October

December

December: champagne, cookware, tools, small household appliances, cars (current year models) and TVs Knowing when to buy can save you hundreds of dollars. Remember that good things and better prices come to those who wait. For more tips from the Financial Readiness Program, register for an upcoming class or schedule an appointment with a financial counselor. Call Army Community Service at 253-967-1453 or the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 253-982-2695 for details.

The greatest benefits of your Roth TSP or a Roth IRA are the tax-free compounding and the tax-free income in retirement. The Roth account must be held for at least five years and you must be 59 ½ years old when withdrawing the capital gains. However, your contributions can be withdrawn at any time without penalty or taxes since you already paid the income taxes on them. There are several factors to determine whether the Roth is your best option. These factors include age, investment return, current tax bracket and retirement tax bracket. Generally the younger you are and the higher the rate of return expected, the better the Roth option looks. The higher your retirement income is likely to be, the greater advantage of the Roth. Additionally, money from a Roth account is not subject to taxes upon withdrawal and doesn’t count in determining whether any of your Social Security benefits will be taxable.
