Weekly Welcome Lunch Learn about the base each Friday at American Lake Conference Center, where a Welcome Luncheon is held for newcomers from noon until 2:30 p.m. Incoming Service Members and their families will be able to stop by tables to gather information about both on- and off-base programs, resources and services. This is your chance to get to know your new location. As for the lunch, well, we all know free is the best flavor, so go ahead and enjoy.

Yakima Training Center’s Fall Fest Saturday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m.–8 p.m., YTC will hold Fall Festival featuring a pumpkin patch, military static displays, arts and crafts, vendors and more. The festival is open to the public and entry costs $10 per car.

Youth sports Parent Central Services shares three pointers for a slam dunk fall: Your children must be fully enrolled with CYS before signing up for any sports teams, will need annual sports physicals and will need annual flu vaccines.

Steer clear of

ain, snow, sleet, ice … are you sure your vehicle can weather the season?

Prep now with some winter car care tips.

Think about your car from the bottom up and from the outside in.

Starting with your tires, opt for good all-season tires and be sure to monitor tire pressure. It’s normal for tire pressure to fall in cold weather, but routinely driving on underinflated tires only increases the risk of damage.

While you’re at it, see if your spare tire has adequate pressure. You never know when you’ll need it or that handy-dandy jack you should keep at the ready. If you’re planning to drive through heavy snow and mountain passes, you’ll need snow chains or cables.

Next, make sure your brake lights and head-

lights are working, especially as the days get shorter and darker. Winter weather can also decrease visibility for drivers, so think about your windshield. Not all wiper blades are made for winter — some can freeze and become rigid, so double check yours. Keep an ice scraper/snow brush in your car, and consider window-washing solution with some antifreeze already incorporated in it.

Cold temperatures can damage your engine block and cause costly repairs, so check your car’s fluids. Do you have antifreeze? Allseason oil? How are the levels of each? You should also have your battery checked and keep jumper cables in your vehicle.

Last, but not least, think of the passengers in your car, including yourself! Nobody wants to get stuck in the snow, but in case you ever do, it’s best to have warm jackets, blankets,

winter hazards snacks, water and safety items such as a flashlight and first-aid kit, including any regular medications you or your loved ones need. A full gas tank never hurts, either.

That all sounds like a lot, especially if you’re new to driving in winter weather. No worries! MWR Auto Skills Centers can help you prepare and even have the option of car care classes and instruction if you’d like to learn how to complete basic maintenance yourself.

Layers of appreciation for veterans and military families

By Angie Andrews s the grandchild, relative and sibling of veterans and current spouse of an active-duty Service Member — who has veteran and active-duty siblings too — I join you in celebrating Veterans and Military Family Appreciation Month.

But I’m not the only one. Originally called Armistice Day, Veterans Day has been a federal holiday since 1938. Additionally, each November, the president customarily signs a proclamation calling on the nation to show appreciation for and celebrate military families.

What started out as National Family Week, a tradition established in the ’90s with the help of Armed Forces YMCA, has now grown to a full month with an open invitation for all to reflect upon, celebrate and support military families.

Reflection …

Throughout the month, focus on the word appreciation, and consider the layers of meaning built in: admiration, understanding, gratitude and an increase in value.

With admiration Often harboring patriotic pride and a hint of awe, people around the country recognize the military as inspirational. Service Members and veterans are held in high regard. Standing to support them, their family members are often thought of with an extension of that same respect. Be encouraged by those rallying around you.

With understanding

hardships which impact their day-to-day lives.

Even while experiences differ from one military family to the next, you don’t have to know exactly what a situation feels like to offer a level of understanding. Empathy is quite possibly the baseline of support anyone seeks.

With gratitude Thankfulness is an almost instinctive way to wrap up all that inspiration and empathy into one heartfelt emotion. Therein lies the very nature of appreciation’s most impactful meaning: an increase in value. If you’re truly grateful for your military family — and all military families — it’s only logical to invest in them.

Other ways to get involved As individuals, there are countless ways you too can advocate for veterans and military families. Whether it’s sending a care package or letter, inviting a single Service Member to a holiday meal, volunteering for programs and events (see more throughout this issue), or simply lending a listening ear, your caring actions will certainly be appreciated.

Employment events You’re looking for a job. We’re hiring. Let’s connect! Family and MWR regularly hosts two types of job fairs and FCC Provider Orientations to help you find your best-fit role.

Job fairs are categorized as either CYS or all MWR. When you attend the CYS Job Fair, you’ll have a chance to learn about Child and Youth Services jobs, meet current staff, share your résumé and possibly have on-the-spot interviews. All MWR Job Fairs are similar and cover jobs within all the different departments of MWR. You can find roles in Outdoor Recreation, Human Resources, Sports and Fitness Management, Information Technology and more. Both types of job fairs are open to the public; you don’t need base access to attend.

FCC Providers work from within their homes to provide child care. To learn more about this opportunity, you can attend an orientation night. Selected candidates will then complete training days.

Expanding child care options Now in its second year, the DOD’s Child Care in Your Home Fee Assistance Program offers an additional option of child care for military families living certain locations — including the Seattle/Tacoma area. Eligible families may opt to apply for fee assistance to cover full-time, in-home child care, which means between 30 and 60 hours of weekly care for your children within your own home. While it is the family’s responsibility to choose their inhome child care provider, providers are vetted through background checks and have specific requirements for training. The amount of assistance received is based on several factors and

families should note there could be additional out-of-pocket costs and tax implications to be aware of as well.

Flexible spending accounts Lastly, as the calendar year comes to an end, it’s a good time to remember Flexible Spending Accounts can be used toward outof-pocket costs, not just for health care but also dependent care which includes child care.

A Dependent Care FSA is an account you can contribute pre-tax dollars to, allowing you to save on taxes for child care costs. Be sure to review your options during your workplace benefits open enrollment each year.

Join Team MWR as a Child & Youth Program Assistant (check WorkAtJBLM.com for current listings), or as a Family Child Care Provider in your on-base home and provide much-needed childcare for military families. What do you love best about fall? For some it’s back-to-school, autumn foliage, changing weather and holidays aplenty, but for many, fall is synonymous with another season’s kickoff—it’s football season! For those who’ve fumbled through spring and summer anxiously awaiting the season’s first coin-toss, Warrior Zone is your go-to place every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

Catch the action at Cowan Stadium on Friday, Dec. 8. Pre-game ceremonies start at 12:30 p.m. with the introduction of the teams, a Color Guard presentation by the 7th Infantry Division, the National Anthem sung by a First Corps Band vocalist and special thanks and announcements by leadership. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Team up with FoFS Commander’s Cup intramurals at JBLM get their name, Fields of Friendly Strife, from General Douglas MacArthur’s famous quote during his time at West Point: “Upon the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that on other days, on other fields, will bear the fruits of victory.” This is a program highlighting the role of sports within the military and is designed for building resilience, camaraderie and cohesion within units.

Active-duty Service Members and their family members can participate in several FoFS sports this fall. Volleyball continues through Oct. 27, bowling starts rolling Oct. 11 and goes through Nov. 29, and indoor soccer is kicking from Oct. 23 to Dec. 14. You can also compete in a swim meet (Nov. 2–3) or the Open Holiday Basketball Tournament (Dec. 4–7). Participation helps you earn points for your unit, but winning gets you points and bragging rights!

Every holiday seems to have one common thing you can count on. We know what you’re thinking. Just one thing?! What about joy, celebrating, fun and togetherness? Well, yes.

But the one thing that always accompanies everything else is the food, and plenty of it too!

If you’re planning to host a holiday feast this year, you’ll need some serving dishes. And there’s nothing more beautiful than handcrafted items. Arts and Crafts and the libraries are joining forces for DIY Stoneware events. From 5–6 p.m., on Oct. 25 at Grandstaff Library (Lewis Main) and Nov. 1 at McChord Library (McChord Field), you’ll have the chance to create not one, but two stoneware pieces just in time for Thanksgiving. Each session is open to DoD ID card holders, ages 18 and older, and limited to 50 participants. To register, please call the library where you’d like to attend. A labyrinth of Haunting like a BOSS Creeping onto lists of the most haunted military installations around, JBLM and its rumored apparitions are bringing you a chillingly good time with a Labyrinth of Horrors at the MWR Fest Tent. Volunteers from BOSS showcase their spooky talents as they not only realistically portray ghosts, zombies, clowns and other frights, but also build the haunted house and displays you’ll encounter this October.

Thrill seekers can attend the Labyrinth of Horrors from 6–10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27 and 28, while those who’d like a

not-so-scary experience can visit earlier in the day on Saturday from 2–4 p.m. Be on the lookout for tricks and possibly treats too; some of the friendlier ghouls are known to hand out candy.

horrors BOSS volunteers trace their Theatrical Nightmare events at JBLM back for decades.

Building 3168, formerly Nelson Recreation Center, was built in 1972 and was the location of some of our installation’s first haunted houses. Even prior to the ’90s, the haunted house program was volunteer-based. In the late ’80s, the experience began to include theatrical elements — everything from setting backdrops, costume designs and makeup to lighting and sound effects.

As the program continued, the attendees’ participation evolved as well. Each event, and

even specific sections of the haunted house events, had stories behind them. Interactive narratives which were sometimes patterned off of pop culture horror movies eventually included guided tour aspects.

From the House of Vampires theme in 1999, the many Walk in the Dark events and even through the few years of the Haunted Crooked Road (which was a pandemic-friendly drivethru experience) to this year’s Labyrinth of Horrors, the JBLM community has been creepin’ it spooky, fun and creative every fall.

Celebrate at Winterfest ’Tis the first Saturday of December, and everyone is full of cheer. Winterfest is here! On Dec. 2, the MWR Fest Tent and surrounding areas are making spirits bright.

Years past have offered face painting, games, delicious treats, photos with Santa and other holiday characters and free arts and crafts. And par for the course of fun, this year’s festivities also include free indoor miniature golf. Plus, don’t forget to enter the Run, Rudolph, Run race. (See “Racing through the holidays” listing below for details.)

Trees for Troops offers free trees to military personnel ranks E1–E5 and their families on a first come, first served basis. But everyone’s eyes will twinkle while watching for more details on our JBLM MWR Facebook page because leftover trees will be available for any DOD ID card holders.

At the Holiday Tree Lighting, you’ll enjoy holiday tunes and carols, seasonal speeches and have a chance to marvel at the deckedout installation holiday tree.

Enroll now for seasonal sports & ongoing classes Sign up your kiddos for basketball and cheerleading, with three age group options. Lil’ Dribbler’s Basketball for ages 3 and 4 costs $25, and registration is open until Tuesday, Oct. 17. Little ones practice for 30 minutes, one day per week through Nov. 15. Everything is fun and games at this age, so this is a practice only sport with no official games scheduled. For children and youth ages 5–15, Basketball & Cheerleading registration is $65 and available from Sunday, Oct. 1–Thursday, Nov. 16. Practices will start in December; first games are scheduled for January; the season will wrap up in February.

SOWA Basketball & Cheerleading for youth ages 8–18 also costs $65 to register, and signups are open from Friday, Oct. 27–Tuesday, Nov. 28. Practices start in November, and game schedules last through the beginning of
