Fix it in self-help body shop

o you dread bringing your auto into the dealer for expensive oil changes or routine maintenance? Do you perform minor repairs in your driveway under poor lighting and weather conditions? The MWR Auto Centers at Lewis and McChord can relieve your car care headaches and save you from unnecessary expenses.

Even if you’ve never done bodywork before, bring your dented or scratched vehicle to the self-help body shop at Lewis Main. The pros will teach you how to perform bodywork repair, step by step. If you need welding or cutting, the staff will do it for you for a small fee. When it’s ready for painting, that’s when the staff will take over and use the new state-of-the-art spray booth to complete the job using the paint you’ve purchased with their advice. “The work is very time-consuming, but very rewarding,” says Robert Fry, Lewis Main Auto Center director. “The staff in both our shops has an amazing amount of experience, training and knowledge. Even though the engine and body shops are both self-help, customers who need help can get it — the staff is on hand to answer any questions they have.”

Learn car care from the experts

Ursula Buford

Auto Center staff experts teach you how to change your oil, lube your vehicle, change and rotate your tires and perform a preventive checkup. McChord Field even has individualized classes for learning the basics, including a car checkup class and lube and oil-change class. “The general car maintenance class lasts about an hour,” says Thomas Graves, lead mechanic at McChord Field. “We cover oil change, fluids, lubrication, tire pressure and coolant in-depth. We also give students a maintenance schedule with detailed diagrams. They’ll know what to do before, during and after maintenance.” That’s just for starters. Far beyond the basics, the staff can assist you with much more. A customer checks his engine at the “We keep an eye on everyone who comes in to Lewis Auto Body Shop. work on their cars, find out what they want to accomplish and help them determine the best, safest way to do it,” Graves says. For a small fee, you can rent bays and lifts that vary according to function at each location. For instance, you can reserve a drive-on lift for changing oil easily, arm lifts for changing and rotating tires and rotary lifts for better access. Each stall has its own tool bay equipped with standard tools. A full array of specialized tools can be borrowed from the checkout window for shop use, including saws, hammers, drills, calipers, extractors, pullers and impact guns. Shop equipment also includes engine hoists, a parts cleaning station, a welding booth, bead blasting, battery chargers, oil changing canisters, injector cleaning machine, bearing press, grease guns, timing lights and detailing equipment. Customers have typically gone to an MWR Auto Center to perform car care and keep their engines up to spec. But more customers are coming in to modify their cars, beef up their engines and install special equipment. Customers who have more extensive car projects can leave their vehicles overnight or up to four weeks for a nominal charge each night. The Auto Center at Lewis Main as limited storage available for even longer projects. Lewis Main Engine Shop Wednesday–Friday, 1–10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. • 253-967-3728 Lewis Main Body Shop Thursday and Friday, 1–10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. • 253-967-4793 McChord Field Auto Center Wednesday–Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. • 253-982-7226 8

Professional services offered While most of the car care is “selfhelp,” the Auto Centers offer professional services for a fraction of the fee outside dealers charge. You can make an appointment at the Auto Center at Lewis Main for tire changes, automotive painting, minor body and fender repair, machine work for drums, rotors and valves, and computerized wheel balancing. The Auto Center at McChord Field offers a safety inspection for any used vehicle you’re considering buying. Both Auto Centers offer state-of-the-art computerized engine diagnostics.

Environmentally friendly ‘R us Both Auto Centers are also centers for free automotive hazardous waste disposal —drop off your used oil and antifreeze when the centers are open. You also will be educated in hazardous waste management when you use the bays for oil, lube, brake fluid and antifreeze changes.

Try car wash, resale lot The Auto Centers also offer 24hour coin-operated self-serve car washes next to each center. Call the nearest Auto Center for more information on car washes, or check online at JBLMmwr.com. If you’d like to sell your vehicle, consider parking it at one of two resale lots for a small weekly fee at either Lewis or McChord. Both lots get good exposure and wide access to a variety of potential buyers in highvisibility areas. The Lewis lot is located next to the Fort Lewis Military Museum and the McChord lot is across from the Commissary at McChord Field. Both resale lots are managed by the MWR Arts & Crafts Centers. For registration and information at Lewis, call 253-967-5001; at McChord, call 253-982-6726. Whatever you’re looking for to take care of your “baby,” look first at MWR Auto Centers to save time and money.

Get free 16-point inspection, oil change Is your spouse deployed and you’re wondering about when to get an oil change, lube or fluid refill on your vehicle? Make an appointment with the McChord Field Auto Center for a free 16-point inspection. All you need is a copy of your spouses’ orders when you arrive for your appointment. For a free oil change, make an appointment with the Lewis Main Auto Center. You’ll need to provide your own oil and oil filter. For your free inspection, call 253982-7226 to make an appointment Wednesday through Saturday. For your free oil change, call 253-9673728 for an appointment Wednesday through Sunday.

Dreaming of a better child care career? Find it as a Family Child Care provider By Patti Jeffrey

With the demand for qualified child care increasing by leaps and bounds, the Family Child Care program is searching for people willing to turn a desire into a career. All you need is dedication to children and a career — everything else will drop into place. As an FCC provider, you will: • Earn up to $2,000 a month. • Be provided free training and free child care during training. • Be given everything you need to set up a new business in the home, including supplies, equipment, toys, food subsidies, tools, handbooks and more. • Be able to access additional resources, mentoring and support from an FCC specialist. • Be provided further training for different types and levels of child care. • Be compensated to further your free education. Once you become an FCC provider, you can take your business anywhere you live while in the military. If you leave the military, your training will be accepted by the state for child care positions, and you can run your own child-care business

once you get a state license. For those who want to get the most from being an FCC provider, staying at Joint Base Lewis-McChord during their spouses’ deployment is a beneficial option, according to Grace Schricker, supervisory FCC director, CYS Services. “You’ll get the extra support you need to stabilize and grow your business from people who understand your needs,” she says. “I often see that relatives back home, although caring, don’t understand the unique demands military life requires.“ For instance, FCC providers who want to continue their education are compensated for their time and are given free child care, including the FCC children they currently care for in their business. They have the opportunity to attend early childhood conferences, be sent to professional organization and state workshops and training, earn accreditation through National Association for Family Child Care, and earn an Child Development Associate. “Those who are dedicated to their career and education will find the most rewards,” Schricker says. “And the military children whose care is entrusted to them will benefit the most, as well.” If you would like to learn more about becoming an FCC provider, call 253-967-3039 to sign up for the next FCC orientation March 8. After the orientation, training classes will be held March 14–18 and March 21. JBLMmwr.com

Feelin’ good

Exercising outdoors? Dress right for the weather by Patti Jeffrey

I

f you’re planning on an upcoming   w inter run, hike, snowshoe, crosscountry ski or other outdoor outing, you’ll enjoy it more when you wear the right clothes! Here are some tips from outdoor recreation experts that you can apply to any outdoor winter activity. Wear layers of clothes for the outdoors. Wearing the following types of layers helps keep you warm, dry and comfortable. You can always take off some layers to adjust for changing activities or changing weather: • Start with long underwear made of synthetic fiber, such as polypropylene. • Put on a lightweight shirt and pants over your long underwear. Pants can be nylon wind pants.

• Gloves should be worn in layers—an insulating layer under a nylon mitten or glove shell. • Beware of cotton! While cotton is great for home wear, don’t wear it for outdoor winter activities. Once cotton sweatpants, sweatshirts, sweaters, pants or T-shirts get wet, they retain moisture and actually rob the body of heat. Why wear layers of clothing made of certain materials, such as wool, polar fleece or polypropylene? They’re made of material that will keep heat in, but draw water out. They’ll insulate you, protect you from cold air, wind, rain (and yes, even your own sweat), and allow for differing temperatures and activity levels without overheating.

Protect your inner body as well as your outer body: • Stay hydrated and well-fed. Someone with an empty stomach will get cold much more quickly than someone with a full one. • Make sure you eat a big, healthy breakfast. • Eat a snack right before your winter activity and bring along lunch and a liter of water in a water bottle. When you are dressed for the cold and prepared ahead of time, both you and any group you’re with will enjoy the outing far more.

• Socks and boots need to work in conjunction for layering — such as polypropylene inner socks with thick wool or synthetic insulating socks worn with coldweather boots, such as military or felt-lined pac boots. Your feet need wiggle room to keep warm, too. • Have a windbreaker jacket worn as a shell layer and bundle up in adequate outer clothing other than your windbreaker jacket. • Wear a hat that completely covers your ears and a visor to protect from sun.

he focus on February can  bring passion to mind. While passion alone can’t lead you to success, by focusing your passion and setting goals, you can achieve your ideal future and turn your dreams into reality. The goal-setting process helps you focus your time, energy and resources in the right direction. Goals give you long-term and short-term motivation. Setting sharp, clearly defined goals gives you a tool to measure your progress in achieving those goals. Before you can begin the process, it’s important to know what an effective goal is. Goals should be specific, measurable, include an action plan, be realistic, define a timeline and be written down. Precise goals include setting timelines and measurable markers to know how much progress you are making. When setting your personal goals, create the “big picture” of your life. Decide what large-scale goals you want to achieve and what you want to do with your life. This includes distinguishing what is important from what may be irrelevant or a distraction. The next step is to break these goals down into smaller milestones that are necessary to achieve your lifetime goals. For example, if you’re working on your college degree, you could measure your progress either by the number of completed credits or your grade point average. Take the time to research the steps necessary to achieve your goal— know26

ince the Focus magazine tran  sitioned into reflecting all Joint Base Lewis-McChord Family & MWR events and services, other MWR Marketing media have followed suit. At the dawn of 2011, we launched a brand-new fully integrated website with comprehensive information on MWR activities, services and marketplace, plus a new Facebook fan page (instead of a regular page) to accommodate an unlimited number of fans. We’ve asked for your input about all these changes, and here’s what you’ve said: “Glad to see this new site is being used for MWR events and post-related info only!” —Lisa M.

“Just wanna say thank you for what you guys do for the JBLM and families…” —Denise W. “…Our library website is really looking great!” —Cindy S. About Facebook contests and giveaways: “…They are awesome!!!!! So much fun!” —Amber A. You still can get Twitter updates by texting “Follow JBLMMWR” to 40404. You can also register (and sign up your family) for classes, competitions, events and more at our website by clicking on WebTrac. Enjoy our new and improved communication your way with your favorite online tools!
