ooking for something new to alleviate your boredom and ignite your passion? Take a new road to fulfillment by learning to love the great outdoors, a new sport, a craft or hobby, getting fit a new way, volunteering and much more with Family & MWR. You and your Family can take advantage of opportunities offered every month at JBLM. For instance, you or a Family member can learn to swim at one of our indoor pools. Kimbro Pool offers both adult and youth swim lessons. The lessons are extremely popular, so sign up as soon as possible (you can be put on a wait list, too). Who knows? Maybe loving to swim might lead to learning to be a lifeguard or swim instructor at JBLM, which would lead to a job! Or you simply could enjoy water aerobics with other adults for fun and exercise. For more information on swimming, water aerobics or lifeguarding, call the Aquatics office at 253-967-9210 or visit JBLMmwr.com for schedules and registration. Maybe you’ve thought about starting a new hobby, such as crocheting or knitting, or want to explore new books and talk about what you’ve learned with other adults. Did you know that our JBLM libraries offer free classes and a book club? They make it so easy to start, especially with other interested adults. Fall in love with reading different kinds of books that expand your imagination and worldview. McChord Library hosts 12

Novel Navigators, a book club that meets the second Wednesday of every month at 4:30 p.m. Sign up and check out a copy of the current book at the front counter. For more details, call 253-982-3454. McChord Library also offers free classes to learn hobbies, crafts and other new things. For example, you can learn to “upcycle” — turning bottles, magazines and other used items into beautiful decor and gifts. Perhaps you and a friend can take ideas presented in class, add more of your own and sell your crafts at craft fairs. Upcycling classes meet at 5 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month. Also involve other Family members in free library events, such as the monthly teen “takeovers” at both Grandstaff and McChord libraries and in free weekly storytimes with crafts. Look for these and many more library classes, events and meetings on our website, JBLMmwr.com. Another new craft that will tickle your tastebuds is homebrewing. You’ll have the opportunity to speak with home brewers at the annual Brewfest at McChord Field Friday, Feb. 20 at the Club at McChord Field starting at 4:30 p.m. You’ll quickly find how passionate these home brewers are about not only the craft, but about creating and refining recipes to win awards and get rave reviews from friends. They can tell you how to get started and might even invite you to join the club. This is one craft that’s meant to be shared! Tired of just sitting around? It’s time to get moving — and you have so many ways to fall in love with a new sport or fitness activity! The staffers at the Outdoor Recreation program excel at motivating you to

start something new, then take it to the next level. Whether it’s learning to ski, snowshoe, kayak, hike, mountain bike, scuba dive or even bungee jump, they’ll be more than happy to introduce you to what they already love to do! Turn to the Adventures section for what sparks your interest, then pick up your phone and make that call to sign up! You can do it! Don’t let your household funds limit you from your passion to get out and move that body! JBLM offers free aerobic programs at our sports and fitness centers! Try out a new fitness class to see what ignites your passion — Zumba, TRX, yoga, CrossFit, weight training and more. Just think, if you find the type of fitness activity you love, you could get certified and teach it to others at a JBLM fitness center to keep that spark going. Find current schedules and locations that fit your lifestyle at JBLMmwr.com. Speaking of household funds — make friends with your budget instead of resenting your relationship with money. Armed Forces Community Service sponsors Military Saves Week during February with lots of free classes and information on how to not only save money, but feel good again about how you spend it. You might even discover that you can truly master the budgeting process and enjoy your life so much more. AFCS also can help you get a job you love with free résumé-building classes, interviewing techniques and more through its employment readiness program. Turn to the Family & the homefront section for information on Military Saves Week and many more free classes. If you love to travel, we would love to help you get the best travel experience possible at the best prices.

You don’t have to travel far to indulge your passions — the Northwest Adventure Center invites you to savor fine red wine and chocolate on its Saturday, Feb. 14 or Sunday, Feb. 15 tour. You’ll quickly find how finely crafted chocolates and wines are enhanced when they’re paired. Visit JBLMmwrRegistration.com to sign up. Leisure Travel Services is the best place to head before you begin to plan your vacation. You’ll find the best available deals by looking at the price list and at Armed Forces Vacation Club on their webpage at JBLMmwr.com. If you love the resort life, get access to 200,000 accommodations in more than 100 countries with the Armed Forces Vacation Club — membership is free! You have exclusive access to the leisure life through vacation rentals and military vacation deals. If you love excitement, rides and entertainment, get exclusive savings at a number of theme parks around the country. Love to get away right here in Washington? Make reservations for Pacific Beach on the Olympic Peninsula. If you love the culture of Vancouver or Victoria, B.C., find tours or packages that whisk you a country away — right next door to Washington. Start planning the vacation you’ll love by calling LTS at 253-967-3085. There are so many more activities you can get to love at JBLM — volunteering through the installation volunteer corps, skeet shooting, pool and gaming tournaments at the Warrior Zone, becoming a volunteer youth sports coach, registering your kids to learn how to bowl and more. Family & the homefront

A first hello A

s military Families, we experience separations and surprises, happiness and pride. The photos of the Matthews Family above were submitted as part of last November’s Military Family Appreciation Month photo contest. You can see why they won the grand prize! When Sgt. Dennis Matthews deployed, his wife, Danielle, was pregnant with their second child. With the help of friend and photographer Shantel Young, the Matthews Family was able to bridge the gap during the baby’s birth and capture on film memories that will last a lifetime. 18

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus • February 2015

In her own words, by Danielle Matthews This deployment was my husband's first and it was our second pregnancy. We were all sorts of torn with emotions but knew we would be able to make the best of it. Both of our babies' genders were unknown until birth; he gets to announce it. This has always been really important to us to keep as a tradition, and we weren't letting the deployment get in the way. I sent boxes of both "it's a boy" and "it's a girl" stuff so he could take pictures to announce when I finally had our baby. It allowed us to include him even

though he wasn't here and keep our tradition alive. It helped both of us, really. The homecoming was his first time meeting our new baby boy. I chose to leave our oldest at home and have my mom take him to school and not let him know daddy had come home. We came home, my husband was able to bond with our newest little one, and then we went to the school to surprise our oldest at lunch. For us, these memories will last a life time. Thinking of the special moments we would have, made the deployment go by much faster and smoother.

Tips for your military life You may feel like you’re alone, but we’re here for you. Armed Forces Community Service has a multitude of services to help Families and Service Members through deployments and reunions. Let us help.

Sgt. Matthews “meets” Skyler via Skype the day he was born. Keeping with Family tradition, Matthews announced “It’s a Boy” to friends and Family with goodies his wife Danielle sent in a care package. She also sent “It’s a Girl” swag, as they kept the baby’s gender a surprise.

Photos by Shantel Young

Sgt. Dennis Matthews meets Skyler for the first time at 5 weeks old during his homecoming ceremony. Facing page: Danielle, Skyler and Sgt. Matthews are reunited. Son Zaiden, 5, was surprised during lunch at school later that day.

Deployment tips • Attend an AFCS mobilization/deployment workshop. • Obtain a deployment checklist from the mobilization/deployment program. • Keep emotions in check . • Know what to do if things break/malfunction — where to take the vehicle, where your renter’s/homeowner’s insurance policy is. • Review the need for powers of attorney. The Staff Judge Advocate office will assist and has a list. • Keep a deployment binder to hold important documents: deployment orders, powers of attorney, shot records, birth certificates, etc. • Make a plan to keep occupied. Take a class, visit Family or exercise. • Keep the FRG/Key Spouse and Rear Detachment phone numbers handy. • Don’t overprocess. You may not hear from your Service Member when he deploys. Remember communication varies due to mission and location. • Talk to your children about the deployment, and use the word deployment (don’t say their parent is just going to work). Work means mom or dad will come home that night; deployment means an extended absence. Answer questions as honestly as you can. Talk about the changes that will take place, and don’t put undue burdens on them such as “take care of your mother while I am gone,” or “you’re the man of the house.” • If moving out of state, contact TRICARE about your coverage. • Talk about a financial plan. Save the extra pay by putting it in the Savings Deposit Program, if available. The interest rate is as much as 2.5% quarterly. Watch emotional spending on both sides. Reunion tips • Communication is key. Talk to your Service Member about the reunion prior to her return. Discuss any changes that have occurred with the children, house, car, etc. Discuss any concerns you both may have. • Be flexible and watch your expectations. Things have a tendency to change rapidly with the date and time of your Service Member’s return. Be open and take it one day at a time. Concentrate on what’s important. • Your Service Member may be exhausted, physically and emotionally. There’s a time change they have to adjust to; they have to adjust to “Family life” instead of living with coworkers and taking care of the military mission 24/7. Give them time and space. If they need to be alone for a bit, let them be alone within reason. If they need to talk or visit the Service Members they were deployed with, let them. They’re connected and they may still feel the need to check in. Please let them. • Changes have occurred in everyone. You, the Family member, have shouldered the majority of the home responsibilities. It takes time and effective communication to adjust to each other again — the intimacy, the freedom, the decision-making. For additional assistance or information, go to JBLMafcs.com or call the Mobilization & Deployment Program at 253-967-8430. Armed Forces Community Service information is continued on page 21.
