buy smarter, buy safer Reduce waste from the source.

Avoid greenwashing. Many

Minimize hazardous materials.

Benefits. Smarter and more

While recycling is a great way to reduce waste, an even better option is to avoid it from the start. Look for products with reduced packaging, minimized toxic content, extended service life, reusability and improved efficiency. Buy used or recycled-content items and consider donating items if you no longer use them. Also, buy local whenever possible.

products and manufacturers make claims regarding the sustainability of their products. Some are true and some are misleading or false. The latter is referred to as “greenwashing.” If uncertain or unfamiliar with a product claim or certification, you can contact the JBLM Sustainable Acquisition Program for assistance (253-966-6466/6463).

Hazardous items, such as toxic and flammable materials, pose risks to users and the surrounding environment. They are often more difficult and expensive to buy, manage and dispose. Purchase only the amount needed. Additionally, look for nonhazardous (or less hazardous) alternatives. Look for products with Green Seal, Ecologo and Safer Choice certifications.

sustainable buying practices can lower product lifecycle costs, improve health and safety, reduce legal liability, and lessen management and maintenance requirements.
