Trying to stay heart-healthy? We serve these tasty meals and many more at our eateries. From left: Habañero’s vegetarian quesadilla, Samuel Adams Brewhouse JBLM’s wedge salad, Strike Zones’ grilled chicken salad and the Zone’s fresh wraps. ho says healthy dining can’t be tasty or satisfying? Stay hearthealthy with us at MWR eateries around JBLM!
Get started with salads Tasty salads are always in demand, and MWR has a large variety from which to choose for just about any appetite. On the go? Pick up a chicken Caesar, Battle Club or Southwest chicken salad at Battle Bean Coffee (inside Stone Education Center at Lewis Main). If you’re at Lewis North, the Zone (inside the Warrior Zone) features a chef salad, chopped chicken Cobb and side salad (the Warrior Zone’s open to ages 18 and older only). Order ahead of time at JBLMwarriors.com/ app and pick it up. For a Mexican flair minus added calories at Habañero Mexican Grill (McChord Field), try a yummy fajita burrito salad with or without your choice of shredded pork, beef or marinated steak. It comes without the tortilla and with lettuce instead of rice. Like to create your own salads? Visit the Club at McChord Field for the fully stocked salad bar (pictured left). The McChord Grill is open from 11 a.m.– 1 p.m. weekdays. The Strike Zone Café at Bowl Arena Lanes at Lewis Main and the Strike Zone
Snack Bar inside Sounders Lanes at McChord Field both serve up a garden salad (with or without grilled chicken), taco salad and side salad. Look for other specialty salads on the menus, as well. Samuel Adams Brewhouse JBLM at Lewis Main offers a fabulous wedge salad (pictured top, second left). Other salads include the Tavern House salad or side salad.
Stay leaner with light wraps, quesadillas & appetizers If you want to feel satisfied but not full, our eateries offer healthy, non-fried options for lighter lunches (and dinner at Sam Adams and the Zone): • From the lighter-sized portion of the menu, Habañero offers your choice of chicken Caesar, ham or turkey jalapeño club wraps, plus lighter-sized quesadillas with or without meat. • The Zone offers Thai chicken, turkey Caesar, turkey bacon ranch and chicken chipotle wraps, plus quesadillas with chicken, bacon cheeseburger and cheese options. • Sam Adams serves up chicken or cheese quesadillas, red pepper hummus with fresh celery, carrots and flatbread, a Thai chicken wrap and cranberry chicken salad wrap. • The Strike Zone Snack Bar offers a chicken-bacon ranch wrap special with greens and fresh veggies on the side
instead of fries (on request). • Battle Bean at Stone Ed creates turkey and Southwest chicken wraps fresh daily, or you can opt for a croissant sandwich with your choice of fillings.
Try vegetarian options The McChord Grill caters to your preferences with savory pastas made to order, plus the huge salad bar. You can also order the tomato, mozzarella and fresh basil sandwich or Mediterranean veggie sandwich. Order vegetarian dishes at Habañero — any burrito or salad can come with grilled onions, peppers, guacamole, rice, salsa and sour cream on request (vegetarian quesadilla pictured top left). All Sam Adams’ sides are naturally vegetarian — side salad, soy ginger slaw and carrot and celery sticks (with or without hummus and flatbread). Also order the classic margherita flatbread with melted mozzarella and basil. For menus, prices and locations at all our eateries, visit JBLMmwr.com.
Did you know? One heart-healthy snack between meals — a handful of nuts — can reduce heart disease mortality 29 percent and cancer mortality 11 percent, even if you grab a handful just twice a week! (Harvard Gazette)

O
ur resolve at Family & MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. We’ve brainstormed some ways to help keep you healthy and motivated throughout your stay with us at JBLM.
1: Do what you love, love what you do You might not have your exciting dream job, but you can create a sense of purpose in what you do. There’s a story about several men at a construction site who were asked what they were doing. One man replied that he was laying bricks, a second said he was building a wall, but the third said he was building a cathedral. You can sense which man got the most satisfaction from work. You can find a sense of purpose in just about any activity, whether you get paid for it or not, when you realize you’re helping to build something big — from raising children to raising the flag. If you’re looking for a meaningful activity where you can make a difference, try volunteering to coach a youth sports team for JBLM’s Child & Youth Services, training to be a childcare provider (if you live on base), volunteering for BOSS

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus February 2017
(Better Opportunities for Single Service members), or even taking a free class from Armed Forces Community Service to learn how to save money for your future, develop your career or transition successfully to the next stage of your life.
2: Treat your heart to healthy habits
We all know it’s hard to quit a bad habit. It’s actually easier to start a new habit when you target what you want to stop doing. Your brain doesn’t really register what you’re not going to do, but when you focus on a new goal, such as going to an aerobics class three times a week or eating a salad instead of fast food for weekday lunches, you can change your lifestyle for the better. It helps when you know what’s readily available. For instance, MWR offers free fitness classes at our Sports & Fitness Centers and pools (turn to page 20 to learn more). If you’re just starting out and are a DOD civilian working at JBLM, check out the Civilian Fitness Program — the Army Wellness Center can tailor your program with measurable goals. Contact your supervisor for information or call Jensen Family Health & Fitness Center at 253-967-5975. You also can find healthy lunch alternatives at our eateries (such as a wellstocked salad bar at the Club at McChord Field). See page 7 for healthy dining tips
or visit JBLMmwr.com under dining for menus at all our eateries. Sign up for a race, swim, go hiking — these all count toward a healthier life!
3: Find stress-less outlets Everyone needs time out for fun, rest and relaxation! Our outdoor recreation program is staffed with experts on play — kayaking, photography, snowshoeing, climbing, hiking, scenic touring — however you want to explore the great outdoors just outside your home. Take up a new hobby — it’s easy with our Arts & Crafts Center classes. Pick up the phone and call 253-982-6723 about how to start sculpting, knitting, quilting, picture framing, book binding, basket weaving, drawing, painting, glass mosaic or sewing this month! For fun Family outings and activities, turn to the youth and libraries sections that are stocked with stress-free ideas.
4: Create new connections
and many more classes. Refer to pages 26–29 for a complete list of classes. We also offer free activities that encourage new friendships. For instance, meet with other book lovers at the monthly library book club, get together with other adults to learn how to crochet or bring your kids to Lego Club or Girls’ Club (pages 30–31). Drop in at Raindrops & Rainbows Parent and Child Play Center to meet other moms and strengthen your own relationship with your kiddos (pages 24–25).
5: Let go of ‘what ifs’ & enjoy the moment When we worry about the future, the joys of today are overlooked. Worry causes our body to stress out and we soon feel overwhelmed. The fact is that we cannot control the future, but we can decide how today will be lived. The best thing to do with worry? Let go and get going! Go to the movies, go bowling on base, go play at the Warrior Zone, go on a getaway — enjoy whatever happiness today brings. Before you go, check out discount tickets at Leisure Travel Services, such as movie passes, tourist packages, select sports, hotels and more. For complete details on Morale, Welfare and Recreation activities, visit our website at JBLMmwr.com.
Creating new connections throughout our lives is the best therapy for relief from the aches and pains of living. If you want some free how-to’s, attend classes from AFCS to learn how to develop closer relationships with your Family, transition more smoothly into new stepfamilies, the ins and outs of caring for your first baby JBLMmwr.com

Always going the extra mile Thank you to Jo Meno for more than 30 years of service Jo Meno came to JBLM in September 1996, following her husband’s retirement from the U.S. Army. After already devoting more than 10 years in civil service, she continued her career as a secretary for the Sports, Fitness & Aquatics Branch in December 1996. She has spent the last 20 years handling the day-to-day operations of the Sports Administrative Office, the driving force of our fitness facilities. Aside from her daily duties of completing countless tasks and various suspense actions, Meno does an outstanding job assisting with employee and customer needs. She’s extremely passionate about the needs of our Service members and their Families and consistently goes that extra mile to ensure they are taken care of. In addition, she often volunteers to assist with various race events. Her expertise and cheerful attitude help make the race registration process very pleasant for all participants. Meno is an exceptional employee whose dedication is repeatedly demonstrated in all that she does. Her outstanding work ethic, leadership and professionalism continue to be represented to the highest degree. We share with great pride her commitment to excellence during her 30-plus years of service to our country as a civil servant with the JBLM Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. are you savings ready? Military Saves Week is Feb. 27–March 3. save Each year the Department of Defense — with the “Military Saves” program — seeks to motivate, support and encourage military Families to save money, reduce debt and build wealth. Why? Because not having savings results in stress and worry when “life happens” to Service members and their Families. Having a game plan for your finances can enable you to deal with financial bumps in the road without the stress and hassle you’d otherwise encounter. While our finances impact us every day, busy military schedules can make it difficult to step back and ensure things are on track. So, each year one week is devoted to focusing on personal finances.
