What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.
JOSH SOLDAN is the JBLM MWR Community Recreation Division chief.

My feelings about MWR have evolved over the years. When I was a young Soldier, MWR was a place that I could go to hang out with my friends and relax. When I deployed, it was somewhere I could go to mentally escape the stressful environment I was in and reach back to Family or friends. It was my connection to home life, both from a reflection standpoint and being able to connect via the technological resources they offered. When my Army career came to end, I started my MWR career as a way for me to continue to serve. MWR was always something I highly valued when I was enlisted, and I wanted to be able to give Service members the same (or better) opportunities that I had experienced. This past year, my wife and I were blessed with our first child, so MWR is morphing for me again. I’m starting to utilize Child & Youth Services and experience the great programs and services they provide and I’m proud of the total Family programming that MWR offers. MWR is everything to me. It was my home away from home, it was my mental release that helped prepare me for the mission. Now, it takes care of my Family. I don’t know a more personally impactful organization than MWR. All of the opportunities it provides for the entire Family is truly amazing.

Hike to hidden places with ODR What it’s like hiking on a Cape Flattery adventure
By Brittany Catanzaro, guest contributor xciting adventure hiking on a cliff where the sea meets the forest, feeling the sea breeze and viewing sea caves and cliffs while meeting new people is a wonderful trip through the Outdoor Recreation Program to explore Cape Flattery. Cape Flattery is the northwestern-most point of the continental United States and is also part of the Makah Indian Reservation.
E
Amazing day of hiking & exploration Our tour guide, Kaweka, had the tour van ready to go as we all met up at the Northwest Adventure Center. During the scenic four-hour drive to Cape Flattery, Kaweka made appropriate stops for tour guests to take restroom breaks and grab snacks. During the drive, time flew by as Kaweka answered all of our questions about the trip, local history and local areas. Once parked at the trailhead, we embarked on our little journey. The 1.5-mile round-trip hike starts off on a gentle path through a shaded forest, making it a great Family-friendly hike. We were lucky to have a clear day with the sun peeking through the trees creating a sunburst effect. Near the middle of the trail, the boardwalk path begins, composing a Kaweka Stoney

unique path through the forest. The boardwalk was not the only unique thing about the trail. There were quite a few interesting trees we could not help but stare at as we hiked by. Some trees were enormous with tree caves located in the trunks and newer trees were growing from older trees. The easily manageable trail leads you to four viewing platforms. Each platform has a different picturesque scene. At the first platform, hikers will encounter gorgeous views of cliffs and large rock formations with trees still growing on top. The ocean waves crash against the cliff walls as the water flows in and out. The second platform has close-up views of sea caves where the teal-colored water inside
sways back and forth, making it mesmerizing to watch. Hearing the waves dancing in the caves is calming and beautiful. While standing at the third viewing platform, we saw whales in the distance blowing water. One of the guests on the tour was happy to share his binoculars so we all could have a close-up view of the spouts. A plaque placed next to this platform reads, “Cape Flattery is slowly retreating under the force of pounding waves. The Makah formation sandstone beneath your feet is riddled with sea caves. By sitting quietly, you can sometimes feel the whole cape shudder from the force of an exploding wave as it funnels into the caves below. Within the span of severKaweka Stoney

al hundred years in the future, the ground you are standing upon may not even exist.” Something to think about. After whale watching, we were eager to head to the last, and largest, platform. Here is where you can observe a small island with a lighthouse in the distance. Time flew by as we were having a blast exploring Cape Flattery. Luckily, our adventures were not over yet. Kaweka had a surprise for us on the drive back. The weather was still perfect with clear and sunny skies and the timing of our arrival was impeccable. We arrived just before sunset to one of Washington’s most beautiful beaches — Ruby Beach — blasted with pink and orange hues from the setting sun. The walk down to the beach is short but the exploration is vast. There are plenty of rock formations to explore, log forts to build — a photographer’s dream. After exploring Ruby Beach, it was time for us to head back to the NAC. Wonderful weather, exciting adventures and meeting new people made for a perfect trip! Start homebased child care business It’s easy with free FCC training & resources
By Kelsey Ferguson, MWR Marketing re you looking for a rewarding job you can do from home and take to your next duty station? Family Child Care provides on-base military Family members with opportunities to earn an income from home while caring for your own children. As an FCC provider, you’ll be a business owner and partner with FCC staff members to provide high-quality child care and create a long-lasting career with resources for continued professional growth.
A
It’s a portable business Erin Moore, a JBLM FCC provider, says that her 13-year FCC career has allowed her to stay at home with her four children at three duty stations. “I’m able to help my kids get ready for school and on the bus. Being home dissipates all of the stress that would happen in the morning if I had to be at a job. “My business has looked different at every duty station. I’ve adjusted as our Family’s needs have changed,” Erin adds. Following an orientation and a seven-day certification course, FCC providers may provisionally open within a month of completing their background check while continuing the FCC accreditation process. “Acknowledge that it can be overwhelming to open a business because it is an adjustment process. Just know that it takes practice to become comfortable, but after you get organized and figure out your systems, then anybody can do it,” Erin says. “Of all people, military Families are adaptable and are wellsuited to a Family Child Care career,” she says. The beauty of becoming an FCC provider is that it allows you to adapt your job to fit your schedule and what suits your Family’s stage of life. While all FCC providers must care for a minimum of two children, each provider determines the type of care they offer, whether that looks like full-time infant care, before- and after-school care or anything in between.
Free resources are always available Grace Schricker, director of Family Child Care, says, “Certified FCC providers have access to years of child care expertise and all the support they need to build a successful child care business. Coaching is provided every step of the way.” FCC staff members provide guidance and mentorship to help a provider get started as well as providing toys, equipment and safety items — free of charge — from the from the FCC Lending Resource Library. Monetary subsidies are also available depending on the type of care offered. “When you first start up, you go through training and meet all of the FCC professionals so that you’re familiar with everyone by the time you open your doors,” Erin says. “If I have a question, I just pick up the phone and they’re always there to help answer my questions... Whether that means coming to my house to address the issue or discussing it with me over the phone.” According to Grace, FCC staffers check in with all providers at least once a week to address any concerns and to ensure that each business is following regulations. To help set goals for children and develop plans to help each child meet appropriate milestones, all providers have access to Teaching Strategies Gold, an online curriculum tool. Providers also have the opportunity to pursue a CDA credential or NAFCC accreditation, at no cost to them, to further their career and set them up for success.
“Of all people, military Families are adaptable and are wellsuited to a Family Child Care career.” Erin Moore
See page 28 for the next FCC orientation.
FCC provider Erin Moore’s dedicated space in her on-base home child care business is stocked with supplies. Any FCC provider can pick up free supplies and equipment from the lending library.

Practice caring by sharing everything good at CYS We’re sharing the love Celebrate Valentine’s Day with freebies Children and parents are invited to bring their favorite stuffed animals to visit the staff at Parent Central Services Thursday, Feb. 14 from 10 a.m. to noon. You’ll receive a Valentine’s Day gift, create a card and have your photos taken in our Valentine’s Day themed photo area. Your stuffies also receive a present! Parental Central is at 2295 12th St. (at Bitar Avenue), Lewis Main. Call 253-966-2977 for more information.
Share your input & care by joining advisory groups We often let our loved ones know we care by giving cards, chocolates and flowers for Valentine’s Day. This year, consider showing you care by joining your child care center’s Parent Advisory Council and helping create even better experiences for your child. The PAC usually meets once a month at your child’s CDC. When you attend, you’ll get to be hands-on with your child’s CYS experience and share your thoughts on how we can improve our care. Contact your CDC’s director to find out when the PAC meets. Another opportunity to help create change is by joining the Parent Advisory Board that meets the third Tuesday of every other month during the school year. It’s a fun, meaningful way to build our military community and to help your child’s CYS experience be the very best. Locations alternate between Parent Central at Lewis Main and McChord Club (where you can order lunch).
Parent Central Services is at 2295 S. 12th St. (at Bitar Avenue), Lewis Main and at 578 Lincoln Blvd., McChord Field; call 253-966-2977 for an appointment. Family Child Care is at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue), Lewis Main; 253-967-3039. Hillside Youth Center/Teen Zone is at 6397 Garcia Blvd., Lewis Main; 253-967-4441. You’re invited to the annual AER campaign kick-off event, “Helping the Army Take Care of Its Own,” Friday, Feb. 22, 9 a.m. at French Theater to learn about the range of assistance AER can provide to Service members. Register at JBLM-aer-campaign-kickoff-2019. eventbrite.com or call 253-967-9852 for more information. The Installation Commander asks all active duty and retired personnel serving at JBLM to continue the tradition of taking care of our own with a voluntary contribution to AER during the official campaign from March 1–May 15. Madigan’s Best
Over the last 15 years, residents graduating from Madigan Army Medical Center’s general surgery residency program have passed the exam for board certification on their first attempt at a nation-topping rate of 97.6 percent. “If you get an 89 percentile in the nation, you’re in the bottom quarter of Madigan in our annual in-training exam. That’s unheard of in any program. In any other program, you get an 89 percentile in the nation, you are doing very well,” Lt. Col.
