re you game to try the “Ultimate Warrior Zone Eats” finalists’ recipe entries? Here’s the low-down: In January, the WZ held a competition to come up with a new signature food item for the Zone. They’re looking for a new type of quesadilla, flatbread pizza or wing flavor. Competitors had to submit the complete recipes by Wednesday, Jan. 22. The recipes are being judged by MWR chefs on appearance, taste and affordability. Once they choose the final four, they’ll cook up the recipes for you to judge. The four finalists are going headto-head during the big game on Super Sunday, Feb. 2 at the WZ. Try the samples and choose your favorite! The winner with the new taste sensation gets a prize and his or her item on the Zone’s menu as a new signature item — instant fame! Along with its events, the WZ grill serves up some awesome food that satisfies your cravings. Check out these favorites: • Thai chicken, chicken chipotle, turkey bacon ranch or ham and cheese wraps. • Meat lovers’, Lebanese, Hawaiian and pepperoni pizzas. • Gourmet salads, such as apple chicken, chopped chicken cobb or Caesar. • Hot and cold gourmet sandwiches stuffed with oven-roasted beef or grilled chicken, pastrami and fresh tuna, plus all the fixings. • Quesadillas featuring bacon cheeseburger, chicken and cheese, spicy buffalo chicken or cheese fillings. • Hearty wings and sliders. • A wide variety of beverages, including Battle Bean made-to-order coffee drinks. Drop by for lunch or dinner seven days a week. The WZ is located at the corner of 17th & D streets at JBLM–Lewis North. Find more information at JBLMmwr.com. 6

Burn Bans Much of Pierce County has an airquality problem during colder months. During the winter, fine-particle pollution in much of Pierce County reaches unhealthy levels, causing lung and heart problems for children, seniors and those with respiratory issues. Although these fine particles come from many sources, wood smoke from residential home heating is the biggest source of this pollution during the winter. These pollution levels continue to be high enough that they violate the Federal Clean Air Act.

D

o you dread bringing your vehicle into the dealer for expensive oil changes or routine maintenance? Do you perform repairs in your driveway under poor lighting and weather conditions? The MWR Auto Centers at JBLM can relieve your car-care headaches and save you from unnecessary expenses.

Learn car care from the experts Your Auto Center staff experts teach you how to change your oil, lube your vehicle, change and rotate your tires and perform a preventive check-up. JBLM–McChord Field even has individualized classes for learning the basics, including car checkup and lube and oil-change classes. “The general car maintenance class lasts about an hour,” says Thomas Graves, lead mechanic at JBLM–McChord Field. “We cover oil change, fluids, lubrication, tire pressure and coolant in-depth. We also give students a maintenance schedule with detailed diagrams. They’ll know what to do before, during and after maintenance.” That’s just for starters. For a small fee, you can rent bays and lifts for whatever you need — a bay to work on your motor, a drive-on lift for changing oil easily or an arm lift for changing and rotating tires. Each stall comes equipped with standard tools. A full array of specialized tools can be borrowed from the checkout window for shop use, including impact guns, extractors, pullers, calipers, drills, hammers and saws. Shop equipment also includes engine hoists, a parts cleaning station, a weldLeft: Father and son Andrew and Clark Leigh work on changing out a transmission gasket on one of the drive-up lifts at JBLM–Lewis Main’s Auto Center. Your Auto Centers are open Wednesdays through Saturdays, and JBLM–Lewis Main is also open Sundays.

ing booth, battery chargers, oil changing canisters, bearing press, grease guns, timing lights and more. Customers typically come to an MWR Auto Center to perform car care and keep their engines up to spec. But customers also come in to modify their cars, beef up their engines and install equipment. Customers who have more extensive car projects can leave their vehicles overnight or up to four weeks for a nominal charge each night. Your Auto Centers have limited storage available for even longer projects. You can make an appointment at your Auto Centers for computerized wheel balancing and state-of-the-art computerized engine diagnostics. The Auto Center at JBLM–McChord Field offers a safety inspection for any used vehicle you’re considering buying.

Fix it in self-help body shop Even if you’ve never done bodywork before, bring your dented or scratched vehicle to the self-help body shop at JBLM– Lewis Main. The pros will teach you how to perform bodywork repair, step by step. If you need welding or cutting, the staff will do it for you for a small fee. When it’s ready for painting, the staff will use the new state-of-the-art spray booth to complete the job using the paint you’ve purchased with their advice. Even though the engine and body shops are both self-help, customers who need help can get it — the staff is on hand to answer any questions. Each shop also has a data system to look up your vehicle’s make, model and year to give you specific information.

Auto Centers help you protect the environment Both locations are also centers for free automotive hazardous waste disposal — drop off your used oil and antifreeze when the centers are open. You also will be educated in hazardous waste management when you use the bays for oil, lube, brake fluid and antifreeze changes.

For more information The JBLM–Lewis Main Auto Center is located on West Way just inside the DuPont Gate. Call the main shop at 253-967-3728. The JBLM–McChord Field Auto Center is next to the Arts & Crafts Center on Barnes Boulevard near the main lodging at JBLM– McChord Field. Call 253-982-7226.

Is your vehicle weatherized? Here’s a checklist! • Check all fluids: Make sure your vehicle has adequate antifreeze. Your engine block is in danger of freezing and cracking (an expensive repair) without antifreeze to protect it. Use all-season oil, which won’t get thick in cold temperatures. Check to see if your windshield washer is formulated for winter to prevent your windshield from icing up. Check your transmission and brake fluid levels before you go on any trip. • Maintain your wiper blades for yearround use. Some blades can freeze and become rigid in cold weather. • Make certain your tire pressure is adjusted for cold weather. Underinflated tires wear out more quickly. Also check your spare tire for proper air pressure and ensure that you have a jack and tools needed to change the tire in case of a flat. • Buy all-season tires that wear well in both summer and winter. • Get your battery and battery cables serviced. You wouldn’t want to get stuck somewhere in cold weather for any length of time. • Carry an organizer in your vehicle with de-icing fluid, jug of 50/50 mix of antifreeze, bottle of brake fluid, flares, paper towels, portable air pump and a blanket. If you ever need help, you’ll have the supplies on hand to quickly get your vehicle back on the road.

A basketball game to remember

CYS Ser vices

Ten JBLM youth watched a University of Washington Huskies basketball game from the front row! After cheering on the team through a very close victory against Hartford, the youth met players and got autographs. One youth even shared an after-game pizza with a player. Head coach Lorenzo Romar also met with the youth to sign autographs and encourage them about school and sports. Needless to say, several of the youth now want to play basketball for the University of Washington! As part of the Manhood/ basketball program, the youth were accompanied by childhood and youth professional Samuel Stough. Stough coordinated the trip with basketball operations director Lance LaVetter and Romar.

Feelin’ good

Turn healthy thinking into healthy living By Erin Rice, MS & Chelsea Long, MPH JBLM Health Educators

I

t’s been a month since you made that New Year’s Resolution. You’ve made it through holiday parties and have set personal goals to lose weight, eat healthier and exercise more. Regardless of where you stand today, it’s never too late to begin down the path to health and wellness. Once you get started, you’re on your way to a more positive lifestyle and better quality of life. Helpful tips to remember throughout the process:

Six months According to Prochaska and DiClementes’ Transtheoretical Theory

Model (1983), it takes at least six months of consistent behavior change to transfer into a habit. If you can hit the five-year mark, you’re even less likely to relapse.

Relapse is common Relapse is most com-

your routine enjoyable: try a new recipe, change your running route, take a free fitness class (see the listing at the bottom of this page for details) or ask a Family member to join you.

mon in the first couple months, so don’t give yourself a hard time if it happens. It’s perfectly normal to hit barriers on your journey to health. Stay positive, pick up where you left off and continue on. If you start to lose motivation, the Armed Forces Wellness Center team is here to walk by your side every step of the way.

Reward yourself with positive incentives

When boredom strikes Often times, we find ourselves in a daily rut. Be open and mindful to change! Find a way to make

Continued on page 29.

Set small goals and reward yourself — a new pair of shoes for walking the next 5K. Choose prizes that coincide with your goals, and avoid those that may deter them (junk food), as this can trigger relapse and have the opposite effect of what you are trying to achieve.

Rock on, race at Shamrock ‘N Run A sea of green will flood the MWR Fest Tent and the streets of JBLM Saturday, March 15 for the 2014 Shamrock ‘N Run! Don’t miss this event — it’s more than just a run — starting at 11 a.m. “ShamROCK on” with DJ Chrissy Williams as she plays both Irish and popular music. After the race, all running participants with bibs will receive a free authentic Irish banger sausage on a bun. Additional bangers will be available for purchase. Raise your glass to a race well run with Irish Stout, also available for purchase. Deadlines for registration and pricing: Sign up by noon Wednesday, March 5 to guarantee a race T-shirt in your requested size (and JBLM event pass, if you’ll need gate access). The cost is $15 for all DOD ID card holders and $25 for runners with no military affiliation. Register after noon Wednesday, March 5 through noon Thursday, March 13,

and your T-shirt size won’t be guaranteed. The cost during this time frame is $20 for DOD ID card holders and $30 for those without a DOD ID card. Wait until the day of the race to register, and DOD ID card holders will pay $25. No military affiliation? Pay $35. Day-of-race registrants aren’t guaranteed a T-shirt. Packet pick-up at MWR Fest Tent: • Friday, March 14, 5–7 p.m. • Saturday, March 15, 9–10:45 a.m. There is a pre-run briefing at 10:45 a.m. 5K/10K run begins at 11. All preregistered participants receive a T-shirt and a participation medal. The race is not officially timed, but the top male and female finishers in 5K and 10K categories will receive an award. Plus, one lucky participant will receive an overnight trip to Victoria, B.C., with Victoria Clipper Vacations valued at $500. Full details will be available on race day at the Day-of-Race Registration table.

Bump into intramural volleyball The intramural volleyball season begins next month. Interested units or teams should plan to attend one of the following information sessions: • Tuesday, March 4, 1 p.m. at Soldiers Field House, 3236 2nd Division Dr. (at Handrich) at JBLM–Lewis Main • Wednesday, March 5 at McChord Fitness Center, 1 p.m. McChord Fitness Center is located at 729 5th St. at JBLM–McChord Field. Find yourself with an unexpected expense? Army Emergency Relief, Air Force Aid Society, may be able to help

By Stacey Gilbert, Army Emergency Relief Officer & Diana Burr, Air Force Aid Society

H

ave you ever found yourself in a financial bind and felt as if you had nowhere to turn? In an emergency situation, Army Emergency Relief and Air Force Aid Society programs are here to help by taking care of our own at JBLM. Established in 1942, both AER and AFAS are nonprofit organizations geared to help Soldiers and Airmen during financial emergency situations. Both AER and AFAS provide financial assistance to active duty Service Members, Reserve and Guard on Title 10 orders, their Families and retirees. It isn’t about giving money away, but rather helping meet the unexpected emergency needs of Service Members and Families. This mission is accomplished by providing interest-free loans, grants or a combination of loans/grants as determined by need on a case-by-case basis. Examples of authorized categories include food, utilities, emergency dental assistance, repairs of stoves and refrigerators and emergency travel. New categories of AER assistance added last year include Family member dental

care, basic furniture needs, rental vehicles, replacement vehicles and cranial helmets. These additions were made to address the changing needs of today's Soldiers and Families. In 2013, more than $3.3 million in AER assistance was provided to more than 2,700 JBLM Soldiers and Family members. Army-wide, AER provided more than $83 million in assistance to more than 70,000 Soldiers and their Families. Airmen and their Families can receive financial assistance 365 days a year wherever they may be serving, thanks to AFAS. AFAS provides assistance in the form of emergency grants and/or loans. Examples of some of the authorized categories for which assistance may be requested include the costs of basic living expenses, emergency travel, vehicle repairs, funeral expenses and medical/ dental emergencies. In 2013, about $150,000 in assistance was provided to JBLM Airmen and their Family members. Additionally, AER and AFAS provide scholarships to dependents of active duty and retired Service Members and financial support for Wounded Warriors and

surviving Families of fallen Soldiers. Support for AER and AFAS comes from Service Members, both active and retired, and civilians through the annual fundraising campaign. This year’s campaign runs March 1– May 15. All contributions are fully taxdeductible. Donors may make their contributions to their unit POC or may target their contributions to specific programs, such as education scholarships or widow assistance. For more information regarding how to donate to AER or how to apply for AER assistance, call 253-967-9852. You may also stop by the AER Office located at 2166 S. 12th St. and Liggett Ave. at JBLM–Lewis Main. For AFAS assistance or details, stop by the Airman & Family Readiness Center, 522 Barnes Blvd. at JBLM–McChord Field. You may also call 253-982-2695.

Once the goal has been achieved Sometimes we underestimate ourselves and our capabilities and start with a small goal that is achieved early on. Although this goal may be small, it’s still reason to celebrate! Setting a goal and achieving it is monumental, no matter how small or large it may be. Now that you’ve reached your first goal, it’s time to set the bar higher for yourself. Once you’ve hit your first short-term goal, think of what comes next — whether it be a new short-term goal or even a larger goal of the future.

to show you where you are today and encourage routine testing so that you can see the positive progress you’re making!

Maintain your newfound habits It’s important to remember that these habits you are changing are part of your lifestyle. They’ll only continue if you employ them. Find ways that work for you to hold yourself accountable — keep a food journal of what you eat each day, write down your exercise routines, whatever works for you.

and lose motivation altogether. We blame ourselves for being inadequate and say destructive things like, “I failed again and ate that cookie. I should just give up on my goals altogether.” If this is the case for you, try setting smaller goals for yourself and rewarding the positive changes you’re making. If you need help with setting goals or increasing your motivation, call the Armed Forces Wellness Center and schedule an appointment. We can provide you with a detailed assessment of your current wellness status to include: • Body fat percentage. • Metabolic testing (show you how many calories your body needs to consume for your personal goals). • Physical fitness testing (measuring your aerobic fitness, flexibility, grip and back strength). Please remember all testing results are used as baseline measurements. We want

Have fun! As with many things, we welcome challenge and change. However, everyday life can provide obstacles that make our goals sometimes difficult to reach. To succeed in changing behaviors, you have to make it fun! Do what you enjoy. Get out of your comfort zone and try new activities. You may meet others who have similar goals and interests while you are at it. Always remember, it’s never too late to start or make changes in your life. If you’re at a halt or are feeling frustrated with where to begin or the lack of results you’re seeing, give the Armed Forces Wellness Center a call. The Health and Nurse Educators can help you set attainable goals, hold you accountable (weekly weigh-ins), offer one-on-one nutrition advice and much more.
