What does MWR mean to me? M

Name: Michelle Durgin Title: Deputy DFMWR Time with MWR: Almost 20 years Time at JBLM MWR: Almost 1 year

4

orale, Welfare and Recreation means so many things to so many people because the services and programs provided by MWR directly relate to recruitment, retention and readiness. As an Army youth, I used MWR whenever I went to the youth center or worked out at the gym. One of my first jobs was as a summer hire in a child development center. While I was in college, I continued to spend my vacations working at the CDC, and when I graduated from college, I was offered the opportunity to move back to Germany and work at a CDC. Almost 20 years later, I don’t have any regrets. MWR provided me the opportunity to give back to Service members and their families, while still getting to travel. I have been stationed at Stuttgart, Hohenfels, Carson, Riley, Campbell and now JBLM. The professional opportunities to grow have been enormous — I started in a toddler classroom and now am serving as deputy director for one of the largest MWR programs in the Army. If you’re willing to try things outside of your comfort zone, the large of umbrella of MWR is here to challenge you. Personally, I’ve made many good friends and met my partner while working for MWR. The thing that brings us all together and forms a common foundation is the desire to serve. Whether it’s at a gym, CDC, library, golf course, Arts & Crafts Center, Warrior Zone, bowling center, Leisure Travel Services or outdoor recreation, MWR has something for everyone, provided by people who want nothing more than to take care of others.

‘Committed to Service Enhancing Readiness Foundation of the Army Culture’ We work to integrate and deliver Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs and services enabling readiness and resilience for a globally responsive Army. JBLMmwr.com

5

What exactly is MWR?

M

stands for: Morale Noun mo·rale The mental and emotional condition of an individual or group with regard to the function or tasks at hand.

6

The first point of MWR is morale, an important aspect of professional and personal life for civilians and Service members alike. There’s a reason that morale comes first — without targeting and providing morale, we would be unable to move forward in focusing on welfare and recreation. From unit parties or family dinners at Habañero Mexican Grill to participating in Warrior Adventure Quest, one of our main goals is providing outlets to help boost morale.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord FOCUS January 2021

W

stands for: Welfare Noun wel¡fare The state of doing well, especially in respect to good fortune, happiness, well-being or prosperity.

Our next point is welfare, something that drives us here at MWR. Even if morale is at a high, without welfare how can an individual and, in turn, the community be successful? That’s the reason we offer a wide variety of resources that target the improvement of welfare. The Directorate of Personal & Family Readiness offers a wide variety of programs and resources for your use. The goal in all of their resources is to promote and teach resiliency, stability and self-reliance. Examples of programming include the Financial Readiness Program, retirement services and military and family life counseling. The concept of welfare is also achieved through Child & Youth Services, which allow you to know that when your children are at a CYS facility, they’re in good hands, leaving you with peace of mind and the ability to focus on the task at hand. JBLMmwr.com

7

R

stands for:

Recreation Noun rec·re·a·tion Activity done for enjoyment when one is not working

8

We end with recreation, and for good reason. While it’s one of our largest categories in terms of options available, it cannot be achieved without the other two categories. It’s something that’s important, but still comes behind morale and welfare. Recreational opportunities within MWR are nearly endless, especially here at JBLM. We have golf courses, walking trails, equipment rentals, Warrior Zone, libraries and the Arts & Crafts Center among others. You’ll find that while each of these facilities are clearly within the boundaries of recreation, they also each have hands in supporting morale and welfare. They complete the brand that is MWR and tie all that we do to one central theme — that we do it for you.

Resiliency means finding strength to go on

By Patti Jeffrey

T

his past year has been rough-andtumble, and we’re no doubt looking toward better things to come. With each January issue, we usually like to give you a look forward to what you can enjoy – winter sports, activities and play. This month, we also want to incorporate taking care of yourself, since this winter’s emotional climate is unlike any we’ve seen. You’ve heard of resiliency throughout your military life but perhaps haven’t needed it as continually as you have this past year. What does resiliency look like when facing a whole new year with unresolved issues? How can we continue to resist giving up or giving in to fear or anger?

What gets us through hard times This question was recently posed on social media: “____ gets me through tough times.” The folks who were asked this question have

all faced serious health issues on top of the 2020 issues. Their answers were humor, music, pets, friends, family, sharing, reading, faith, kindness and love. Let’s break that down:

Humor Whatever small things you can do or say to break tension and bring some levity to an otherwise stressful day can make a world of difference in your outlook. A mom or dad who has to remind their kiddo one too many times to do their homework might end the situation in tears. Or they might just take a moment to step back and say, “Hey, do you need a cookie? I need one too, so let’s take a cookie break and then get back to homework.” Ways to incorporate humor into your family’s day are like a breath of fresh air. For instance, have your family members write down their favorite joke and drop it in a “joke jar.” Then, whenever you need a break, you can pull one out and

Music How many of us infuse music into our days? It’s a known remedy for the blues to sing aloud, play instruments or just listen to soothing, relaxing songs. Parents soothe their children to sleep with bedtime songs, so why not adapt the same approach to soothing our own tensions and worries?

Pets There’s so much stress relief waiting for you at your door with the wag of a tail and soulful eyes wanting to cuddle and console you. Pets help you regulate your own moods when you take care of them, get outside for walks and play with them.

Friends and family We’ve been texting, video chatting and even calling our friends and family members like crazy this past year. How about writing them letters? Putting our thoughts down on paper helps clarify what we hold in our hearts for our friends and family. It also slows us down and helps us focus on what’s really important in our lives. For those who live with us, hugs and “I love you” do wonders, and you can never overdo them!

Sharing You’ve heard the slogan, “Sharing is caring.” Did you know that the caring part goes both ways? Those who give and care about others also feel better about themselves. As you spread your habit of sharing, you might just experience what research has confirmed: Sharing can be contagious!

Reading Books lead you into a whole world of possibilities and hope. Find inspirational book lists at your JBLM libraries! Challenge yourself to read a new novel, biography, history or humor book instead of watching TV or browsing social media. You’ll likely come away with a renewed sense of hope and optimism.

Faith, kindness and love When faced with adversity, we can choose to respond however we wish. Whether we hold a belief in a higher power or not, we still all carry values. While we may feel pangs of fear, grief or anger when encountering an event, we have the power to choose how we’ll react. For instance, when your spouse or child does something that provokes your anger, you can take three deep breaths and remember to act in love. When you hear yet another disturbing event in the news, you can process through your mixed emotions and act in integrity and kindness, even when on social media. When you intentionally set a goal to be kinder to others, you’ll reap the rewards. Examples include expressing sincerely felt kindness to a co-worker, making a special effort to extend kind words to a neighbor, holding the door for someone carrying bags or taking time to help a loved one. Finding resiliency is also finding help. Asking for help is a

courageous and powerful thing to do! If you’re feeling stressed or need assistance emotionally or financially, please use the Resilient JBLM resources as your community navigator to get connected to base resources. Also use the Washington State COVID-19 resources listed here for more resources. Many have commented that we’re in this together, whether or not we’re in the same boat. Whatever your viewpoint or where you’re at in life, we can all agree that resiliency helps us not only survive, but grow stronger in the midst of the storm.

COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

The Ingredients of Resilience Resilience is the ability to bounce back from diďŹƒcult experiences. You can practice self-care through the four ingredients of resilience.

Flexibility & adaptability

Purpose

View changes as opportunities for growth.

Stay true to your core values. Identify what motivates you and let go of trying to meet other’s expectations of you. Do more things that bring you a sense of peace or calm.

Connection

Hope

Hold on to healthy relationships in your life. This could be friends, family, social groups, pets, or a higher power.

Positivity is a powerful tool. It is okay to think about negative possibilities, but give equal attention to positive possibilities.

If you are feeling stressed because of COVID-19, call Washington Listens at 1-833-681-0211.

In March, I was furloughed from my job, and my son’s school switched to virtual education due to COVID-19. “I took a chance and decided to sign up for the Quarantine’s Greatest Loser Competition. It was a great time for me to focus on myself and my health while the world around me seemed to slow to a halt. “I’ve made several sustainable changes to my diet and lifestyle throughout and beyond the duration of this competition, and it has had a profoundly positive impact on me and my family’s lives! We make healthy meals together and take family walks together every day. My kids even follow along while I do yoga in the mornings and the Facebook “Workout of the Day” in the afternoons. The workout each day, along with other MWR activities, such as the Virtual Trivia Nights, gave me something to actually look forward to every single day during quarantine — at a time that could easily have been a negative time of uncertainty, anxiety and dread. It turned into one of the greatest years of my life!” Continued on next page.

Philisa Campbell won second place in the Quarantine’s Greatest Loser. After Philisa Campbell was informed that she won second place, she wrote, “My weight-loss journey began nine months ago (November 2019). I was 293 pounds. “Though I began to lose weight prior to the challenge, it helped me to find the motivation to surpass my plateau. Now my mindset is renewed toward achieving my endeavors. “Thank you, JBLM MWR, for contributing to my journey toward a better life.” Lester Mungro achieved third place among so many other contestants competing for prizes.

For the reader of the family, don’t forget to participate in this year’s Winter Reading Program. The program runs through Jan. 30 and is open to all ages, prereaders, kids, teens and adults. It’s a helpful way to encourage reading for all ages. All readers should register for free using the link at JBLMlibraries.com. Balancing expectations in remote learning with life in a pandemic OBJECTIVES • Gain skills and tools to assist your students with remote learning during COVID-19. • Provide resources for you and your student • Develop a network of support

Parents are the experts on their children and make the best decisions on what works best. You know your child better than anyone else. Trust yourself and know there is no “perfect balance” during this pandemic. No parent has this figured out and you are all doing the best you can given the current situation.

Tools & Techniques 1. Stop. Breathe. Talk. 2. Reframe parenting expectations. 3. Provide clear expectations. 4. Repair and apologize. 5. Family meetings.

42 Joint Base Lewis-McChord FOCUS January 2021

Reframe from parenting expectations. “Good” or bad.” These two words should not be used talking about how we are as parents. Parenting is a lifelong journey. Give yourself permission to reflect on the situation and try something different next time.

Tips and Tricks • Flexibility • Don’t try to re-create the classroom. • Find a space that works for your child. • Find a system that works for you to stay organized. • Don’t sweat the small stuff • Reassure yourself and your child

Routine — Children thrive on routines. • Stick to it. • Predictable schedule • Breaks • Planning and time management • Color-coded schedule. Let your children do this to make it their own. • Stay on a sleep schedule even if they are not physically going to a school building

Resources • Tutor.com, free for all active duty and federal employees • Khan Academy, khanacademy.org • Go Noodle, gonoodle.com • Military Child Education Coalition, militarychild.org • County Health Departments: Thurston County Health Department https://www.thurstoncountywa.gov/phss/Pages/covid-19-resources.aspx Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department https://www.tpchd.org/healthy-people/diseases/covid-19-information-for-families Also look for support through local school districts in the form of workshops, virtual platform tutorials, academic support, parent engagement and more.

JBLM School Support Services has additional resources and is standing by to help with your school needs. Phone: 253-967-7195 JBLMcys.com and jblm.armymwr.com/happenings/school-information
