f you’re like most of us, you like your personality to shine online, click at work and feel right at home. Your personal spaces show who you are, as well. Maximize your individuality with one-of-a-kind creations from Arts & Crafts Centers at McChord Field and Lewis Main. For starters, you can create your own mouse pads or coffee mugs with a favorite saying, art or photo. You can cheer on your team by wearing customized shirts, jerseys and jackets. How about imprinting family photos onto crystal-like sculptures for a shelf or desk? Place your collectables in a shadow box to hang on a wall. Get your name engraved on wood, glass or granite for an office name plaque. Personalize a gym or tote bag, backpack or towel. “The possibilities are only limited by your imagination,” says Gloria Rodgers, Lewis Arts & Crafts Center director. Once you step inside an Arts & Crafts Center with an idea of what you want, the experts will help you get what you need within your budget. “Our main goal is to keep prices down with custom orders,” Lesley Hill, McChord Field Arts & Crafts specialist says, “whether it’s a group order for a unit or booster club or an individual wanting a one-of-a-kind present.”
Personalize just about anything JBLM’s Arts & Crafts Centers each offer their own products, and together offer expert custom embroidery, laser engraving, photo transfer and matting and framing. For instance, McChord Field Arts & Crafts offers a cold-press laminator up 12
to 24-inches wide; photos fused to clear paper weights and dimensional plaques; full-color photo transfer onto white or light-colored garments, porcelain nightlights and pillowcases; vinyl lettering and art, and premade shadow boxes,
among dozens of other products. Lewis Main Arts & Crafts offers special-order customized clothing or accessories for adults, youth and infants available from a catalog; customized Plexiglas key chains; full-color transfer

onto mouse pads, birth or wedding announcement mementos and much more. Choose items from a catalog for custom embroidery or photo transfer, or you can bring in your own clothes or accessories. Both centers offer glass etching onto stemware, vases, bottles and steins. Laser etching also includes metal, wood and stone products. The embroidery experts produce multicolor embroidery onto hats, bibs, onesies, blankets, clothing, wine bags—the possibilities are wide open. If you need ideas, come into both Arts and Crafts Centers. “We have lots of samples to get you started,” Rogers says.
Learn how to mat and frame If you need to mat and frame artwork, prints, awards and photos, save a bundle of money by learning to do it yourself. Both Arts & Crafts Centers offer hands-on matting and framing classes; call to find out how to sign up. After you take a beginning matting and framing class, you can elect to take more advanced classes, such as shadowbox making. Both centers offer the space and tools to work on your own projects for a small fee. For more information, a consultation or to register for a class, call the Arts and Crafts Center at Lewis Main at 253-967-5001 and at McChord Field at 253-982-6726.
T
he woodworking shop at McChord Field has turned a lot of students on to making their own furniture pieces and decorative products for
their homes. “We’ll provide you with the knowledge and the tools to learn a skill you can keep with you throughout life,” says Bonnie Scannell, ad-
ministrative assistant. Sign up for a beginning woodworking course to learn how to use both hand and power tools safely and effectively. You can work throughout the month in the woodshop to complete a piece of furniture you start during the course. You also can opt to learn other woodworking techniques, such as lathe and face plate turning, box-making and joinery techniques. Apply what you learn to make artful candlestick holders, bowls, salt and pepper shakers, plaques, cups and vases, decorative boxes and much more. The woodshop and its tools are available, at a small rental cost, to those who don’t have another place to build and finish pieces. If you’ve taken woodshop in high school or know how to use woodworking tools, you’ll first be tested on the equipment in order to work without an instructor present. Otherwise, you’ll need to go through a certification process. If
you
want
assistance,
woodworking staff members can help you with a number of hand, power and specialty tools. “We want everyone to have a measure of success,” says Herb Lebeau, instructor. “I’ve seen customers’ knowledge and skill levels shoot up exponentially when they complete their first, then second, then third projects.” Call 253-982-6726 for more information about the woodworking
center,
prerequisite
safety briefing and classes.

Feelin’ good
This year, you can keep your resolution
to get fit! By Patti Jeffrey

If you’ve been discouraged with your workout or haven’t seen the results you thought you’d have by now, get on track with help from a fitness trainer. Free group fitness training sessions are available at McVeigh and Wilson sports and fitness centers at Lewis Main. Certified fitness trainers will work with you to help you get to your personal best. Fitness coordinator Ronald Raymond is a certified fitness trainer who leads group fitness training sessions at Wilson Sports and Fitness Center. “Our goal is to reshape the body,” Raymond says. “We can reduce body fat and increase endurance. That can mean a weight-loss program through speeding up the heart rate and burning calories, or it can mean increasing overall strength and building muscle mass. The one thing we never do is use body weight as an indicator of success, because someone can actually end up weighing the same or more, yet they’re slimmer and their clothes fit much better.” Before you begin training, you’ll get a free MicroFit fitness assessment that includes measurements of body fat, flexibility, strength, aerobic fitness and blood pressure. A physician’s release may be required

before you’re placed in a training group. Once you’re part of a training group, you’ll get the help you need to achieve the most from your workout. “We
work from different training levels— body building, aerobic conditioning, speed and agility, power lifting or a combo of strength and endurance,” says Raymond. “We can change the

Succeed with your
New Year’s resolutions Taking charge of your life, health and finances provides you the perfect opportunity.
By Ryki Carlson, JBLM Financial Counselor
T
Three of the top 10 New Year’s resolutions include losing weight, saving time and spending less money. Combining these into creating low-cost healthy meals for your family can help you reach your goals. One of the best kitchen tools to help you achieve these goals is a slow cooker. Slow cooking offers you the opportunity to prepare a meal in the morning and be read-to-eat after a busy day at work. Cooking with a slow cooker is not limited to soups and stews—the variety of recipes available in cookbooks and on the Internet offers you almost unlimited options. The simplicity of cooking with a slow cooker helps reduce your grocery bill by slowly cooking less expensive cuts of meat and tenderizing them over low heat for a period of time. Additionally, it’s a great time to use fruits and veg-
26
etables in season, which are usually less expensive and highly nutritious. When you plan meals, make a list of items you need and compare it with what you have on hand. This helps eliminate wasting food and money. Take a few moments to match coupons to your list by visiting ppgazette.com. Optimally, this wonderful kitchen appliance can improve the nutritional
content of meals while increasing flavor. With slow cooking, flavors have time to fully develop—vegetables absorb the flavors of the stock and herbs used. You can tailor any recipe to your taste preferences. Leftovers from these meals offer great nutritional lunches with little or no additional cost, while helping to eliminate eating out at lunchtime.

This month, we’ll complete our 1,000th quilt. The Quilts for Kids program started in April 2003 to make quilts for children having difficulty with a parent’s deployment. This month, we’ll complete our 1,000th quilt! Using a six-hour pattern, quilts are made by volunteers with donated materials and given to Child Guidance at Madigan Army Medical Center, child development centers and the Fisher House. You may also call the library to receive a quilt. For the past two years, volunteers have met on Make a Difference Day and quilted for more than six hours. This year’s youngest volunteer was 7 (although young children usually aren’t allowed to help, she enjoyed picking out material with her mom), and several young men also enjoyed the opportunity to help. Currently based out of the Grandstaff Library at Lewis Main, the Quilts for Kids program meets Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
