hether you’re new to JBLM or have been here for years, you’ve most likely visited Family & MWR services, recreational facilities and business operations that help improve your quality of life. We’re not content to merely make these available to you — we continuously search for ways to add more enjoyment and satisfaction to your experience at our facilities.

Year to year, capital improvement projects are scoped out and prioritized based on need and quality of life for everyone at JBLM. Whenever there’s a closure, you can expect the facility to reopen with a better way to deliver the services on which you rely. For instance, Samuel Adams Brewhouse JBLM at Lewis Main opened to great reviews and has brought you up-close performances with several celebrity musicians. The Club at McChord Field recently reopened with a brand-new dining experience, new conference spaces and complete entertainment system in the neighboring pub. Whispering Firs Golf Course debuted a new outdoor kitchen and dining area for parties, and Nelson Recreation Center offers a new covered pavilion and barbecue area with full-length basketball courts and sand volleyball courts for unit picnics.

During this course, you’ll receive hands-on climbing and climber’s safety training in Washington’s glorious Cascade Range. Unlike Rainier, the Cascades is part of a huge mountain range with scores of peaks topping 8,000 feet, upwards of 400 glaciers and countless permanent snowfields. This program is designed for the beginner or intermediate climber who wishes to develop strong fundamental skills in all aspects of snow and glacier climbing, as well as rock climbing. The course serves as a prerequisite for many of the Outdoor Recreation program’s basic-level climbs and is a stepping stone to more technically difficult mountains, including Denali. This course has served as a springboard to many climbing careers, including numerous Everest summiteers and has developed a foundation of skills for hundreds of independent climbers. Trail hiking surfaces and those beyond the parking lot are generally uneven, so hiking boots are recommended. Committed to excellence We thank Paul Gierczynski for 31 years of service to JBLM Paul Gierczynski was first employed as an intermittent custodial worker at McVeigh Sports & Fitness Center, Sports, Fitness and Aquatics Branch, in June 1985 working only minimal hours. The following January, he was converted to a regular full-time custodial worker. In April 2000, Gierczynski was promoted to his current position as a Recreation Assistant. He has worked under the supervision of at least six facility managers at McVeigh and continues to provide excellent service to both Service members and the JBLM community. You’ll see Gierczynski working annual special events to include Special Olympics of Washington, Armed Forces Day and Freedom Fest, as well as at other Sports Branch race activities due to his volunteer commitment to the installation. Throughout his tenure, Gierczynski has received numerous certificates of appreciation for his outstanding performance and contributions between 1985–2016. We share with pride his commitment to excellence during his 31 years of service to his country as a civil servant with the JBLM Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. JBLMmwr.com

opportunities & challenges bring 2017 into focus

Reflect, celebrate & prepare in the new year With the holidays wrapping up and 2017 kicking off a new year, Families and couples may be facing different transitions. Some Families may need to focus on getting back into the routine of school with their children, while others are adjusting to returning from travel or having guests in their home for the holidays. Couples may be newly married or thinking about ways to celebrate an anniversary. Others may be preparing for an upcoming deployment or extended training exercise. And some may be looking at 2017 as the year to set some new goals and make some healthy changes in their lifestyle. With any change that occurs for a Family, couple or individual Family member, it’s important for the entire Family unit to have skills and tools in order to manage through the transition. The FOCUS program is a great place to strengthen and expand a Family or couple’s skills in being able to effectively handle any type of change. FOCUS offers 6–8 confidential sessions at Familyfriendly hours to: • Highlight current strengths. • Build practical tools around areas of communication, managing emotions, problem-solving and setting goals. Sessions are fun, interactive and free! If you want to start 2017 off with a strong, resilient Family, contact the FOCUS Program! FOCUS is located at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331. For additional informa-
