Parent Participation Program
IMCOM Brand Central
All ages are invited to get active with youth sports The Youth Sports Office hosts seasonal sports and a variety of camps and activities throughout the year, specifically coinciding with school breaks (such as upcoming Spring Break; the spring sports calendar is coming soon). Registration is going on now for spring soccer and bumblebee soccer. Spring soccer is open to ages 5–15 for $55. Bumblebee soccer is open to youngsters ages 3–4 for $20. Register by Friday, Jan. 31 for both age groups.
Parent volunteers with the Parent Participation Program may earn a reduction in childcare fees! Read to your child’s class and volunteer your time as needed for a win-winwin situation — you and your child get a little special time together, you earn a childcare discount and the center has another valuable volunteer. By volunteering in your child’s center, you earn points, which are accumulated for a reduction in fees. Points may be accrued in half-hour increments, and parents may earn a fee reduction for volunteering a minimum of 10 hours. Once 10 points are accumulated, you
earn a 10-percent discount on one month’s fee for one child. Because parents in this program are considered intermittent volunteers, a background check isn’t required; a gratuitous service agreement must be signed. A list of frequently asked questions and a “participation opportunities” chart may be found at the Community Updates page at JBLMmwr.com. You may inquire at your child’s center or at Parent Central Services to get started.

resolutions Making 2014 your healthiest year yet — AWC style By Erin Rice, JBLM Health Educator
W
e’ve seen another holiday season go by — a time filled with catching up with Family but also likely lots of eats and sweets. Pumpkin pie and stuffing galore may be a part of your Family meal time. Not to mention holiday parties at work or home. Oftentimes we eat in excess and feel the guilt later on. According to doctors, you could be eating a daily excess of 500–1,500 calories during the holidays — that’s about one– three pounds in weight gain a week! You’ve most likely made your New Year’s resolutions, and it’s quite possible that one of yours is fitness-related. The JBLM sports and fitness centers and the Army Wellness Center can help you keep your resolution and reach your fitness goals.
So what are some options? Get your wellness score at the Armed Forces Wellness Center. We offer services such as body composition testing, cardio-respiratory fitness testing and resting metabolic testing (to see how many calories your body needs to maintain your current fitness level). We also have nutrition classes and stress management information available. Health educators can work with you one on one to help motivate you to a healthier self! Call 253-966-3757 to schedule your appointment or drop by Jensen Family Health and Fitness Center, 2022 Liggett Ave at Lewis Main, today. Plan moving into your day (if it isn’t already a part of it). Aim for 10,000 steps each day. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends a goal of 1,000 calories of weight loss per week for weight maintenance, or 150 minutes of moderate continuous exercise per week. Pressed for time? You can accumulate
it in 10-minute bouts (e.g., morning, lunch and dinner walks). Add resistance training into your weekly plan for muscle strength and resistance. Aim for two to three days a week (assuming you have been cleared by your doctor). Have at least 48 hours of rest between muscle groups worked to allow for growth and repair. If muscle fitness is new to you, take advantage of the expertise of a personal trainer (available at many JBLM gym locations). Check out JBLMmwr.com for a fitness facility that works best for you! Keep track of what you eat by using a food journal (e.g., myfitnesstracker smartphone app or paper/pencil). Using a food journal is a great way to increase self-awareness. Often, the food we eat isn’t bad, we just eat too much of it. Check the food label on packaged foods for serving sizes and monitor how much you are currently eating (and drinking). Don’t beat yourself up if you eat a little too much one day. We’re here to help you get back on track feeling better about yourself and improving your overall wellness. This year, you will keep your New Year’s resolutions! JBLMmwr.com

Learning & earning
It’s never too early to start thinking about
your income tax return By Mary T. Cron, AFCS Financial Readiness Program
Now that the holidays are over, it may be time to face the music if more spending happened than what was planned for. For some, a plan is in place on how to take back control and get the bills paid off as soon as possible. For others, it may mean revisiting the budget to cut back on wants and minimize the needs until the extra bills are back in control. Still for others, the big plan may be to file their income taxes as soon as possible in order to use the tax refund to pay off the debt. If you’re in the income tax plan option, remember to keep a few things in mind. Comparison shop the services of the tax provider you’re using and ask how they calculate their charges. If the only item you’re using to file is a W2, there are 28

programs and places that can be used to have it completed and filed for free. Any money saved by using the free services can be put toward outstanding bills. Be aware of what extras you may be paying for. Again, if the only thing you’re using to file is a W2, it may not make sense to pay for audit protection. The money saved here can also be put toward holiday debt. Time the return. The IRS website stated that the majority of tax refunds were processed and received within a 21-day period after receipt. If filed online, the wait was even shorter. Before paying a fee to try and get your return back sooner, remind yourself that you’ve survived without the money all year, so holding off a few weeks
may be worth the wait. Anything saved can be used on you or your Family instead of increasing someone else’s profits. Be aware of scams. According to the IRS, a sophisticated phone scam has been brought to light where taxpayers are targeted. Chosen victims are told that money is owed to the IRS and must be paid promptly. If not, the victim is threatened. In all cases, don’t send any money until after calling the IRS at 1-800-8291040 or going to the nearest IRS office to verify if money is owed. For more information or to schedule a one-on-one appointment, call Armed Forces Community Service at Lewis Main at 253-967-1453 or the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 253-982-2695.
