“We’re planning mixed-level activities that include both children and adults,” says Georgia Cartner, Book Patch Library children’s specialist. “Different age groups can gather at different activity stations
throughout the library each week.” The McChord Field Library is planning a multitude of activities, entertainment and special guests throughout the summer, including Maya and Miguel characters from PBS, Point Defiance Zoo’s Zoom Outreach Program with live animals, a hula dance teacher, bubble show, treasure hunt, a puppet show and giveaways, plus weekly stories and crafts for youth. The teen program features Water Olympics, Craftapalooza, Survival Island, outdoor pool party, treasure hunt, Paint Like Pollock and more. Additionally, participants can attend family-friendly movies with free snacks Thursdays at 3 p.m. at the McChord Field Library. “We’re coordinating the summer reading program together,” says Kristin Padilla, McChord Field Library senior library technician. “So, if you miss a day’s activities at one library, you can get in on the fun the next day at the other library.” The coordinated schedule at JBLM libraries includes: • Storytimes and activities at the

Grand Finale celebrates you When you register, you’ll be given a log to record the amount of time you read (and are read to). You’ll receive a prize for each of three levels. When you complete the log, you’ll be invited to a Grand Finale Summer Reading Party and ice cream social. Book Patch Library is holding its party Wednesday, Aug. 4 from 1 to 3 p.m. The party will feature free ice cream, a random prize drawing and presentation of volunteer certificates. McChord Field Library is holding its party Tuesday, Aug. 17 at 1 p.m. Highlights will include a barbecue, dunk tank, tattoo shop with face painting, bouncy castles and games. “We try to make the summer reading program as easy and fun as we can to get more families involved,” says Cartner. “When parents and grandparents read aloud to children, the time counts for both the adults and the prereaders. When brothers and sisters read aloud to each other, they both get points for time spent reading. It’s just that simple!” For more information about the summer reading program, call Book Patch Library at 253-967-5533 or the McChord Field Library at 253-982-3454.

The more words they hear and learn, the better they’ll do in school, according to Reading Is Fundamental (rif.org). When they watch their favorite shows, they’ll also improve reading comprehension and speed!
