Wade & swim at Shoreline Park Bring your kids to Shoreline Park’s wading and swimming areas with lifeguards overlooking the activities. Younger children can enjoy the 2-foot wading area, while older children will want to venture out to the 4-foot depth. Swimmers can explore the floating playground for a fun slide back into the lake. If you’re into human-powered paddling, try exploring American Lake with one of the rentals Shoreline Park offers — canoes, one- and two-person kayaks, stand-up paddleboards or pedalboats. Shoreline Park is located at the end of Shoreline Beach Road at Lewis North. The park is open daily from noon–7 p.m. during the summer. Questions about the park? Call Russell Landing Marina at 253-967-2510 from Wednesday–Sunday.
Get out on American Lake with boat rentals Like to fish, ski or jet ski? Russell Landing rents pontoons, motorboats and jet skis by the hour or for the day. The marina is located at 8981 American Lake Ave. Call 253-967-2510 for more information.
Splash Park offers hours of fun With a backdrop of Mount Rainier and surrounded by grassy playfields, the Splash Park at AFC Commons at Lewis Main is a popular place to hang out. Pack your picnic lunches, lawn chairs and blankets to spread out on the grass, or select one of the shaded or sunny picnic tables for a leisurely afternoon. The Splash Park is open daily until dusk through the summer. If your kids want a change of pace, the soft-fall playground and skateboard park are nearby. Also find snacks and cool treats from Bowl Arena Lanes and AFC Arena Battle Bean Café.
Outdoor pool offers diving, swimming & lounging There’s nothing like a warm, sunny pool to dive into on a hot summer day. McChord Field offers free fun for Families at the McChord outdoor pool daily from noon–7 p.m. during the summer. Soak up the sun poolside on one of many loungers, snack at an umbrella-covered patio table, slide down the kids’ slide or dive from the low- or high-dive platforms. Get Fit, Be Strong! is the dedicated special youth sports program designed to help keep children strong and fit as parents protect and serve. For registration, visit http://JBLMcyssRegistration.com.
Friends, field trips & great times for middle schoolers & teens
summer activity (without the need for sunscreen), the Family-friendly area is open Monday–Thursday, 1–4 p.m. and 6– 7:30 p.m., Friday 1–7:30 p.m. and weekends 10:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Kimbro Pool is located adjacent to McVeigh Sports & Fitness Center at Lewis Main, 2161 Liggett Ave. For more information, call 253-967-5026.
For more ideas on staying cool with the Family this summer, see Splash, dive, float & swim! on page 12.
JBLM youth centers are great places to make new friends (see next listing for information on the youth sponsorship program) and have fun this summer! Middle school students and teens are invited to drop in for open recreation at two locations: • Stop by the Teen Zone (inside Hillside Youth Center at 6397 Garcia Blvd. at Lewis Main). • Visit McChord Youth Center (located at 3032 Dogwood St. at McChord Field). You’re invited to join us this summer (and all year round) at both centers. Registered youth are eligible to participate in field trips and activities and may bring a friend to visit the facilities. (Friends may complete a self-registration application if they want to come back — it’s free and CYSS verifies with parent/guardian before the registration is complete). The Teen Zone is hosting the following field trips for registered youth: • Field trip to Tumwater Falls Monday, July 7, 1–6 p.m. • Shop at Southcenter Mall Monday, July 14, 1:30–7:30 p.m. • Hang out in the sun at McChord Pool and have lunch at the McChord
Exchange food court Monday, July 21 (time to be determined). • Visit the Lacey Batting Cages Monday, July 28 (time to be determined). Trips and times are subject to change without notice. You must be registered with Child, Youth and School Services to attend. August trips include Wild Waves, a barbecue at American Lake and paintball. The fun doesn’t end there — the MST program at McChord Youth Center is watching the Mariners in action Wednesday, July 23. You’re invited to see Safeco Field like never before — from the field (the group will be allowed on the field before the start of the game)! The trip is open to the first 20 youth and includes transportation and a reserved seat for the game. The trip departs at 9:45 a.m. and returns at 5 p.m.
Make your move easier for your students with youth sponsorship With the Youth Sponsorship Program, youth are paired together — one incoming youth and one who’s been at JBLM — to communicate, making transitions smoother and friendlier. Incoming youth are invited to submit an application, and current JBLM youth can get involved at either JBLM youth center. For an application and transition videos, go to JBLMmwr.com/cys.htm. Family & the homefront
Family-friendly budgeting Whether you have a little one on the way, school-age children at home or are thinking of starting a Family, you know that bundles of joy come with a price tag. Don’t let the added expenses scare you. Plan ahead, create a budget and raise your Family comfortably. By Peter Fevriere, JBLM Financial Readiness Program
A
friend of mine with two daughters was recently comparing the individual cost per diaper between buying from three big-name retailers. She knew the difference down to the penny and was always going with the least expensive option as any budget-conscious person does. It occurred to me that while expanding the Family by having a child is most often an emotional decision, there is a large, long-term financial commitment 18

that should also be considered equally as seriously. As such, it’s important to estimate the increased cost associated with bringing another child into your Family and planning future budgets accordingly. By assessing the financial impact of adding a child to your household and planning ahead, the stress and strain can be lowered and finances better managed, instead of extending spending beyond your income.
Free online tools, such as the calculator found at BabyCenter.com, are available for anyone to use. By entering a few general characteristics about your household, it shows that a child will cost about the same as purchasing a new car in cash each year. Depending on your income level, a child will increase the household budget between $10,000–$25,000; a fouryear college degree can add an additional $25,000–$100,000. Cost shouldn’t be a prohibitive factor in

having a child. Plan ahead. Ask yourself these questions: • Will a second job be needed? • Will our Family need to downsize housing expenses, house size or even move in with other Family members? • Is trading in or selling your vehicle for a less-expensive one an option? Consider cutting back on recreational spending, such as eating out, cable TV or other non-essential expenditures. Whatever choice is made, adjusting existing expenses will help curb the additional costs associated with bringing a new bundle of joy into your life. Armed Forces Community Service can assist in developing household budgets and spending plans. Call 253-967-1453 to register for a class or schedule an appointment. Financial counselors are available at Lewis Main or McChord Field locations.
Get the assistance you need in every arena of military life Military and Family Life Counselors (formerly Military Family Life Consultants) are licensed professionals who provide situational, problem-solving consultations anonymously and confidentially. What your FRG can do for you A Family Readiness Group is a command-sponsored organization comprised of volunteers who provide
support and communication between the Family members, chain of command and community resources. If you’re interested in becoming an FRG volunteer or interested in receiving information from your unit, contact your unit Family Readiness Support Assistant or unit leadership. FRG volunteers are required to attend training; for training, call 253-967-8430. See next month’s issue for information about the Key Spouse Program.
You can make a difference — one child at a time JBLM and our local communities are in critical need of foster parents. Being a foster parent is not a life-long commitment but creates a sense of accomplishment and service gratification that will last a lifetime. Quick facts to help you decide if it’s right for you: • You can work full-time. • Getting a foster care license in Washington can take as little as three months. Interested or need more details? The first-ever Summer Beach Bash was a huge success! More than 2,500 people attended for fun, music and a tribute to the military. Check out more photos at flickr.com/jblmmwr/sets.
JBLM Families get early taste of summer and are the stars of a rock show Shoreline Park was the place to be for last month’s Beach Bash. More than 2,500 people at JBLM attended the Kaplan University-sponsored event. The party spilled over worldwide with a simulcast of the American Freedom Festival concert aboard the USS Midway to more than 300 military bases. Kaplan University also sponsored a fundraiser to benefit the American Freedom Foundation during the event, raising and donating more than $10,000 to provide phone cards to forward-deployed Service Members! “We wanted to make sure the civilian concert event aboard the Midway also included active members, and the JBLM Family came through in flying colors,” says KU representative Steven Bernard, who was at JBLM for the event. Twice during the event, JBLM was broadcasted to the live concert in San Diego and out over the Pentagon Channel. To commemorate the event, the World Classic Rockers signed and dedicated a guitar for those at JBLM. The Military Appreciation Zone attracted hundreds of people sending Service Members well wishes and support through social media outlets.
