Food & fun
Summertime meals Cool off with summer eats & treats Whether you’re at the McChord Pool, Lewis Main’s splash park, on the go at work or taking a lunch break, stop by one of our eateries for fresh and cool pick-meups! Turn water fun into a tasty picnic! Sounders Lanes Family Fun Center’s Strike Zone Snack Bar is right across the street from the McChord Pool (on 5th Street), and Bowl Arena Lanes’ Strike Zone Café is across from the splash park at Lewis Main (on Liggett Avenue). Pair a crisp chicken, taco or house salad with a fountain drink for a refreshingly light lunch, or order a club, tuna, turkey or ham sandwich to go. Make it a combo by adding chips or a small salad with a fountain drink. The Strike Zones also offer other beverages, such as orange juice, energy drinks and bottled water. Battle Bean coffee shops are the perfect go-to for cool coffee drinks and smooth iced drinks for that late-morning pick-me-up on weekdays! At Lewis Main, try the white mocha, caramel macchiato or Snickers and Milky Way iced coffee drinks. Noncoffee drinks include iced chai tea, Italian soda, fruit granita (with or without cream) and sweet tea. At McChord Field, the Battle Bean Café offers iced Americano, latte, caramel macchiato, chai latte and mocha drinks. For menus, addresses and hours of operation to these and other MWR eateries, visit JBLMmwr.com. Habañero Mexican Grill manager Mike Cortinas ensures the 6-pound burrito he’s creating, called the “Hump,” is up to the weight advertised before serving. Customers can specialorder and eat the Hump for free if they can finish it in an hour or less by themselves. The regular price is $14.95 — order and share it with friends! Emiliano Hernandez

T
aking up a craft or hobby is a powerful antidote for stress, worry and anxiety. In fact, it’s great medicine.
According a number of psychologists, crafting and other hobbies can decrease your heart rate and blood pressure, improve sleep and positively impact your brain chemistry. (craftcouncil.org) Who knew that such a simple pastime could be so good for you? Your enjoyment is more than psychological, it’s physics. When your midbrain is engaged by the repetitive movement involved in many crafts, your temporal lobe is unable to focus on worry or stress. In fact, your cortex, which controls conscious thought, becomes quiet and peaceful during the activity, according to Robert Maurer, PhD, a psychologist and staff member with the University of Washington and UCLA Schools of Medicine. (scienceofexcellence.com) Lesley Hill, the Arts & Crafts Center manager, heartily agrees. “It’s relaxing. You get away from everything else when you’re working on a creative project.” She says, “It’s so thrilling to start with only a square piece of fabric or a pile of colored glass and come out with a finished project. I’ve seen students who’ve never sewn before proudly wear their aprons out of sewing class. To say, ‘I made this’ instantly boosts your self-esteem.” Classes include beginning framing, basic sewing, glass mosaic, basic drawing techniques, basic book binding and a Saturday craft workshop where you can bring your ideas to share. A monthly Kids’ Kraft is also offered for your children for only $5 per child. Hill says that all the Arts & Crafts Center classes are not only creative, but are also practical and can save you money.
“An artist who draws or paints can take the framing class to showcase his or her own works without spending a lot of money having each project framed,” she says. “The book binding class teaches you how to creatively keep all your photos, poems and scrapbooks together, or make gifts, such as journals. “You can immediately use projects from the sewing class, such as shopping bags, aprons and even an owl tooth holder for the tooth fairy to leave a coin in.” Hill also says that students can use the Saturday workshop time to finish projects or start more projects for only a dollar an hour for rental space. Classes accommodate most everyone’s busy schedules. All classes require registration and payment in advance. For more information and to register, call 253-982-6723.

Community comes together for JBLM Half-Marathon Photo and story by Spec. George Fuller, 19th Public Affairs Detachment
F
amily & MWR hosted the annual JBLM half-marathon and 5K resiliency run May 30. More than 400 Service Members, civilians and their Families gathered for the event at American Lake. This event is part of a series of Family and MWR programs that aims to bring the community together and foster resiliency. Army Warrant Officer Darrell Arndt with the Warrior Transition Battalion, Madigan Army Medical Center on JBLM says he’s participated in half-marathon events every month since 2013 as a way to honor the Soldiers he lost during a deployment. “It’s a great feeling to be able to pay back to the community and Families that have lost a loved one in combat,” says Arndt. “I wear my team red, white and blue shirt as a way to remember the sacrifices of military veterans and their Families.” With some racers using this event to remember those they’ve lost, others are using this as an opportunity to make lasting memories with their loved ones. Linh Shark, an Army spouse of the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division participated in the run with her 7-year old son Jonathan and says she thinks it’s great for Families to do things together. “Watching my son come across the finish line was the highlight of my day,” says Shark.
Often members of the local community don’t get the chance to see beyond the fence surrounding JBLM. For some racers, it was their first experience at JBLM. Kate Sappington, a 37-year-old homemaker from Gig Harbor, says this was a personal record race for her. She was the first female to cross the finish line and this was her first time running the JBLM halfmarathon and her first time being on base. “This was a well-put-on race with a great route and a scenic view,” says Sappington. “There was never a doubt which direction you had to go. On the way back, having the encouragement of all the others ladies really kept me going.” Encouragement can come from all aspects of life. George Schultz, a retired Navy lieutenant commander who served on the USS Enterprise Battle Group was the oldest male runner, at the age of 66. His doctor encouraged him to become more active due to his past medical history. Schultz says events like this bring Families together. He and his son have been training up to run more marathons like this. They both ran the Army’s 10-miler in Washington, D.C., and they plan to run the Navy-Air Force half-marathon this year. “For my age group, I think I did pretty well,” says Schultz. “People are living longer and trying to stay healthier. This is the generation of people trying to stay in shape to be around longer to spend more time to see their grandchildren grow up.” JBLMmwr.com

Celebrate the big 5–0 with us! Army Community Service, which houses many of the Army’s Family support programs, turns the big 5-0 Saturday, July 25. At JBLM, ACS was renamed Armed Forces Community Service to embrace our joint-base culture and to recognize that ACS supports all branches. Join us as we take a stroll down memory lane and recognize past staff members and volunteers, and bring you news stories from the last five decades. Learn about current programs, and look to the future as we continue our story as Armed Forces Community Service. We’ll work closely with our community partners to evolve and improve the support available to our military Families and look to kick off a year-long awareness campaign at and around JBLM. Follow us at fb.com/JBLMafcs for details, and call 253-967-7166 for information about our birthday or any of our programs and resources.
You’re invited to a Party in the Park! To close out the birthday celebration, AFCS invites you to “Party in the Park” to celebrate summer, have some fun and enjoy time with your Family and friends! Join us Friday, July 31, 1–3 p.m. Whether you’re single or married, retired or active duty, old or young, this party at Freedom Park offers something for you — live music, food, face painting, an obstacle course, slip ’n slide and other events. Bring your picnic blanket and spend the afternoon with us! Freedom Park is located off Liggett Avenue near Bowl Arena Lanes and is also home to a skate park, splash park and ADA-accessible playground for those looking for some additional adventure (skate park will be closed during this event only). (Turn back to page 24 for information on Freedom Park.) For more information, follow us on fb.com/JBLMafcs or call 253-967-7166.

Book Patch Kids Programs: Book Patch hosts storytime Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. and a Summer Reading Program event for kids Thursdays at 1 p.m. Activities include: • Music in the Wind — Kids will unwind with the sound of a chime. For kids who like to rock, we’ll have fun with foil, glue and rock n’ roll attitude. • Kids will also be moving and twisting to some oldies-but-goodies. • An out-of-this-world steel drum artist is sure to get little feet tappin’. • Creating some mind-blowing musical treasures to stand the test of time.
Book Patch/Grandstaff Teen Programs: Tweens and teens will enjoy a heavy metal, head-banging, soul-quenching, rappin’ summer. Teen events at Book Patch are Fridays, 6–7:30 p.m. Stop by to twist the night away while swaying to chimes of yesterday. Drum your way to a messy, stereo-pounding, paint-flying good time!
McChord Kids’ Programs: McChord hosts storytime Thursdays at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Summer Reading Program events are Tuesdays at 1 p.m. for kids. Kids will make musical instruments from around the world, celebrate the 4th of July with a birthday party for America and play musical games.
McChord Teen Programs: Summer Reading Program teen events are Tuesdays at 3 p.m. • Create a summer soundtrack accessible on Spotify. • Join our lip sync battle. • Create custom watercolor designs with your favorite lyrics. • Compete with your friends in our “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” showdown.
McChord Adult Programs: Adults can get in on the summer reading fun, too! Check out these events: • Learn the basics of the art of belly dancing from the Mas-Uda Middle Eastern dancers, a local group, Tuesday, July 7, 4:30 p.m. • Test your musical knowledge to win prizes in a game of Jeopardy Tuesday, July 14, 4:30 p.m. Put on your thinking cap and dust off your music knowledge! • Enjoy the sweet sounds of Profundo, a barbershop quartet Tuesday, July 21, 6:30 p.m. All four members are international-level barbershop competitors.
