he sky’s the limit for party and trip planning this summer when you rent your supplies and equipment and get the best prices on discount tickets and passes with us. As your exclusive recreation outfitters, the outdoor recreation centers can help you gear up for the time of your life. Imagine a backyard barbecue with a big gas grill or rotisserie cooker, a canopy tent for shelter from sun or rain, guests playing croquet, baseball, horseshoes, tug-of-war and badminton. You have enough folding chairs and tables for everyone, plus insulated jugs for punch and iced tea and big ice chests for your canned or bottled drinks. Yes, you can rent all these supplies for the day! Maybe you’re dreaming of escaping on a camping trip to the ocean, mountains or lake. If you’re a Family, you’d love to fit everyone in a spacious camper trailer, bring along a canoe or kayak, maybe some paddleboards, a baby backpack carrier, lantern, camp chairs, hatchet for wood fires, water jug and picnic supplies. You can rent all of those and more — whatever fits your budget. No worry about storage, upkeep or moving extra stuff with you when you PCS. For those who love to hike and camp, you’re totally covered with two- to sixperson tents, backpacks, cooking kit, camp stove, heater, mess kit, sleeping bag, pad and cot — even hiking boots. With outdoor rentals, you can explore new recreational opportunities without
any obligation to buy equipment. Want to try fishing, water skiing or wake tubing, crabbing, clamming or golfing? Rent all your equipment before you decide to buy. Some popular rentals can be reserved ahead of time and some are first-come, first-served. If you’re not sure what to bring for your outings, talk with an outdoor recreation expert in person. Drop in anytime and let them take you idea-shopping.
Tips for planning your next outing Here are a couple of ideas for getting the most out of local adventures from the outdoor recreation experts: • If you’re new to the area, the best way to discover what’s around is by signing up for a group trip. what your practice should look like. Our sunset classes cater to all levels — from those with no prior yoga or stand-up paddleboard experience who are inspired to try something new to serious practitioners of both. The trips will reinvigorate you and push you to become an even better yogi than you thought possible — all while enjoying the natural splendor of floating on water. Explore the grounding challenge on a stand-up paddleboard and begin to experience the awakening of your great ability to focus. Each class begins with a brief shore lesson on the basics of SUP, followed by a guided paddling warm-up. Work to improve your balance and keep above water (yet don’t be afraid to splash around) with invigorating SUP sun salutations flowing into strengthening and lengthening postures, breathing exercises and guided meditation on American Lake.

At the end of the course, you’ll have the knowledge, skills and ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations. Minimum age: 18. Keep your cool this summer Family resiliency, stress management and career prep with JBLM Armed Forces Community Service
readiness programs
Take advantage of resources and programs at JBLM As you may know, Army Community Service houses many of the Army’s Family support programs (and turned 50 last July). At JBLM, ACS was renamed Armed Forces Community Service to embrace our joint-base culture and to recognize all branches we support. AFCS has several locations across JBLM. For AFCS program information, you’re invited to stop in at AFCS in Waller Hall (2140 Liggett Ave., Lewis Main), AFCSMcChord (551 Barnes Blvd., McChord Field) and at Yakima Training Center (Bldg. 271, B St. & 4th Ave). To celebrate our birthday this July, “like” fb.com/JBLMafcs to learn more about our programs and resources. For information about AFCS, call 253-967-7166 or 253-982-2695 (509-577-3114 at Yakima Training Center).

ors (formerly called Military Family Life Consultants). MFLCs are licensed professionals who provide situational, problemsolving consultations anonymously and confidentially. Services are free for military Service members and their Families. Training and support on topics include: • Relationship issues and re-establishing intimacy, combat stress and coping strategies. • Emotional cycle of deployment and reintegration. • Communication. • Anger management/conflict resolution. • Parenting skills. • Children's reaction to deployment and reunion. Call 253-329-6632 to make an appointment or for information. The MFLCs also host a monthly Military Caregiver PEER Forum the first Wednesday of every month, 9–11 a.m. at the JBLM Fisher House (9999 Wilson Ave., Lewis Main). PEER stands for Personalize Experiences, Engagement and Resources. The MFLCs want to hear from military caregivers to learn about issues impacting your day-to-day lives, hear what your needs are and connect you with other military caregivers. resiliency tip of the month Help make summer fun for the entire Family with help from Families OverComing Under Stress Summertime’s a good time for barbecues, going to the park and sitting by the pool with friends and Family. In the heat of the summer, sometimes kids can “lose their cool” and they may misbehave. When children have lost their cool, it’s up to the parents or caregiver to help the child get back in control of their feelings and actions. Taking a timeout is a great way to help your child regulate their emotions, but instead of sending your child to “time out,” try calling it the “cool down” corner. “Cooling down” helps the child connect their emotions to their behavior while removing the negative feeling or “punishment” of timeout. FOCUS can work with your entire Family on summer cool-down strategies! FOCUS is located at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331. For more information, call 253-966-6390 or email JBLM@focusproject.org. Plus, you may also visit focusproject.org or fb.com/FOCUSresiliencytraining.

SUMMER IS A GREAT TIME TO RELAX, CONNECT AND KEEP YOUR CHILDREN HEALTHY & FIT! Now’s the perfect time to help your children stay engaged in activities they love, explore new things and create new habits. Before you know it, your family will be preparing for the new school year!
GET THE FACTS!
Sleep, activity and nutrition can positively influence your child’s school and academic performance.
SLEEP Did you know? Children who get the right amount of sleep tend to do better academically. Their moods, balance and coordination are generally better and they think more clearly and remember things better, too! A good sleep routine: • Positively benefits a child’s mental, emotional and physical growth and development. • Reduces the risk for being overweight or obese. • Helps give children better control over their emotions, more motivation throughout the day and contributes to their ability to pay attention in school.
ACTIVITY Did you know? Active children score better on tests and get better grades. Get your children involved in fun activities where they have to be active for at least 60 minutes every day! An active lifestyle has lifelong benefits: • Children who are active from a very early age have lower rates of injury, better bone health and are less likely to become overweight or obese as adults. • Being active for 60 minutes or more of play and activity during the day can reduce stress and anxiety in children.
NUTRITION Did you know? Providing your children with good nutrition supports their ability to think and learn. • A well-balanced diet reduces a child’s risk of being overweight or obese. It strengthens their muscles and bones and improves their overall energy levels, mood, attitude and focus. • USDA’s “MyPlate” is a great resource: ChooseMyPlate.gov
When the start of the new school year rolls around, turn to Madigan’s School Based Health System for your student’s healthcare needs. Health promotion, primary care and behavioral health screening services are available for military students in grades 6–12 at local school-based health centers for TRICARE Prime beneficiaries.
