What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

KATIE WILTON is the Boys & Girls Clubs of Washington State’s Military Youth of the Year. She has been part of Hillside Youth Center/ Teen Zone programs and activities at JBLM for three years.

2

I feel very thankful to have MWR in my life. Being a military child, it can be hard moving around the world and adjusting to new places, but MWR works to make the most of the benefits of military life. When I was young, I was able to go to Disney World ® and Disneyland ® through MWR! It was one of the most memorable trips in my childhood, all thanks to MWR. But this is just one thing that MWR does for military Families. I also enjoy the multiple pools and Carey movie theater on base. The library is very useful for schoolwork, and I can easily find the books I need. But my favorite aspect of MWR is Hillside Youth Center/Teen Zone. Teen Zone is a wonderful service provided on base meant especially for military teens. I recommend that teens go if they are new to JBLM or have never visited. Teen Zone is where you can meet new friends, play basketball, get involved in programs like leadership clubs, fine arts, health and wellness and other amenities, such as a computer lab and even a 3D printer! Best of all — it’s free! I was able to become Washington’s Military Youth of the Year and won a scholarship. In fact, I’ll be flying to San Diego to compete at the regional level in July. If it were not for the benefits provided by MWR, this opportunity never would have been possible for me or any other military youth. Growing up as a military child, MWR has always been a part of my life and I don’t know where I would be without it.

THE ART OF astrophotography How to capture starlight, moonlight, the Milky Way and other night lights in photographs

By Kaweka Stoney ho hasn’t gazed at the stars and become lost in the moment, wondering in awe about our place in this vast universe. With this vastness of space, photographic opportunities are endless, and the subjects are truly spectacular. But capturing the perfect shot of the Milky Way is no easy task. A lot of things in astrophotography must be just right, from the composition of the scene to the equipment you’re using.

W

Using the right equipment The basics of night photography are pretty standard. Start with investing in a digital single-lens-reflex camera — it has the advantage of higher sensitivity and bulb exposure mode for unlimited long exposures. You’ll also need a sturdy tripod and a remote control or shutter release cable to minimize shaking. A steady camera is essential to getting images with sharp stars.

19

The optimal location Choosing a good location is crucial, and the most important consideration is light pollution. You must look for a place with minimal interference from local lights to give you the clearest images of the stars overhead. Some of the best locations in Washington include the coast of the Olympic National Park and Mount Rainier National Park.

Ideal camera settings You’ll have to do some experimenting before you arrive at your ideal camera setting, but try a lens with a large aperture, such as f/2.5. Set your camera at a high ISO — start at between 800 and 1,600 and choose a shutter speed that will give you a long exposure. For pinpoint-sharp stars, take 500 and divide by the focal length of your lens; this will give you the shutter speed to shoot for a full-frame camera. For a crop (APS-C sensor) camera, you must multiply your focal length by 1.5. For example, with a 24-mm lens on a full frame, the shutter speed is 20.8 seconds, 500/24=20.83 (round down to 20 seconds), and on a crop camera the shutter speed is 13.8 seconds, 500/(24x1.5)=13.88 (round down to 10 seconds).

The spiral star effect Stars appear to rotate above the earth’s axis — in reality the earth is turning, which means you can use your camera to achieve a spiraling star effect. To capture the star trail, you must set your camera to bulb mode and use your cable release to take a long exposure. Exposures can be anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour or more, depending on how long you want the star trail to be.

A stunning foreground image The night sky is spectacular on its own, but with a great foreground subject, you can make the composition really pop.

Time of year Winter provides plenty of great photo opportunities, but the dense core of the Milky Way peeks above the horizon in the Northern Hemisphere during the summer months. You’ll locate it to the south between June and October. If you’re interested in trying your hand at astrophotography, we’re providing several night photography trips this summer. We’ll conduct an astrophotography trip during the Perseid Meteor shower Saturday, August 11. For more information, email us at JBLMadventuretrips@gmail.com. Kaweka Stoney

Garrison CSM hopes to inspire others through bodybuilding By Dean Siemon, Northwest Guardian ommand Sgt. Maj. Kenny Clayborn, Joint Base Lewis-McChord Garrison command sergeant major, is hoping people will give the sport of bodybuilding a try during the 2018 JBLM Bodybuilding Championship set for Saturday, Aug. 11. In addition to a competitive outlet, the sport where individuals are judged based on their body composition and fitness could be a new lifestyle for the JBLM community. “Hopefully we can inspire someone who has never tried it before, or someone who hesitated and actually liked it, to go for it and inspire them for a lifetime of change,” Clayborn says. “It’s about giving someone an opportunity.” Clayborn, now age 46, joined the Army in 1990. He says he never did much more than the traditional Army physical training regimen, but after a 2003 deployment to Iraq, he got into weightlifting and strength training. Over time, Clayborn noticed changes in his body composition. He hired a trainer for his wife when he left for Afghanistan in 2012. When he returned, she was in great shape and was interested in the 2013 JBLM Bodybuilding Championship, an event they entered together. That was the starting point for Clayborn, who has competed in several regional competitions. Most recently, he finished third in the Physique Masters 35-plus category at the National Physique Committee’s Vancouver USA Natural national qualifier in Vancouver, Wash. in March. Since that 2013 introduction, Clayborn has practiced good fitness training and nutrition habits, looking at food as fuel and not fun. He says his doctors have told him routinely how impressed they are at his numbers for his age group.

C

“(Bodybuilding) has increased my ability to stay healthy and to stay physically fit longer than most of my peers, in my opinion,” says Clayborn. “My longevity in the Army has increased because of this.” Registration is open until Friday, July 27 for Service members, retirees, Family members and DOD employees. The entry fee is $25, which is a small price compared to civilian competitions. For the NPC event in Vancouver, Clayborn says he spent about $800 total between the entry fee, tanning, hotel and other travel costs. “There are so many local competitions in the area that are more concerned with winning the competitions, getting pro cards and being able to move onto regional and national competitions,” Clayborn says. “What I’m after here at JBLM is to provide an opportunity for the JBLM community that’s cheap and gives them the opportunity to try bodybuilding where they’re not feeling threatened.” Clayborn says those interested in giving the competition a shot should be fully committed to get the most benefit. Although most aspiring bodybuilders should give themselves at least 16 weeks to prepare, interested parties shouldn’t wait for the perfect moment to start, he says. “You have to start wherever you are and start working toward your goal,” Clayborn says. “Whether your goal is the JBLM Bodybuilding Championship or just to get healthy, there is no perfect time to start.” Clayborn says anyone who wants to compete should connect with a local trainer who can provide guidance in training and nutrition, because it is very difficult on your own. He’s willing to provide tips to JBLM community members who want to connect with him on Instagram; look for username “kennyclayborn.” JBLMmwr.com

EAP tip of the month

Staying in the moment with mindfulness S

ummer can be a time of fun activities, such as vacations, outdoor sports and longer days spent with loved ones. However, summer also may be a time of significant stress due to additional child-care needs and variances in work or household commitments. Adapting relaxation techniques to reduce potential stress can be helpful while navigating a new routine. Some of the benefits of practicing relaxation techniques include: • Slowing heart rate. • Lowering blood pressure. • Slowing breathing. • Improving digestion. • Maintaining normal blood sugar levels. • Reducing activity of stress hormones. • Increasing blood flow to major muscles. • Reducing muscle tension and chronic pain. • Improving concentration and mood. • Improving sleep quality. • Lowering fatigue. • Reducing anger and frustration. • Boosting confidence to handle problems. You can relax in the moment when you practice one or more of a variety of relaxation techniques. For example: • Autogenic relaxation is the practice of incorporating visual imagery and body awareness

36

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus July 2018

to reduce stress. Picture scenes, such as a calming stream, while focusing on breathing in and out. • Progressive muscle relaxation is the practice of tensing and relaxing each muscle group. For example, try tensing the muscles in your toes for approximately 5 seconds, then relaxing for 30 seconds and repeating. • Incorporating visualization is the practice of using a mental image to take a visual walk to a calming and serene place or memory. Use as many senses as possible. If you imagine relaxing by a lake on a warm, sunny day, think of the warmth of the sun on your body and the breeze of the water as it gently ripples at a distance. Practice mindfulness by staying present in that moment. Keep in mind that all relaxation techniques take practice. As you begin to feel stressed, try incorporating as many relaxation techniques as possible. For a free mindfulness app (through the VA’s National Center for PTSD and DOD’s National Center for Telehealth & Technology), visit mobile.va.gov/app/mindfulness-coach. To learn more about this topic, stop by to see the Employee Assistance Program team at 2008B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue), room 114 or call 253-732-2214.
