for skateboarding or trick biking at the skate plaza, roller skating at AFC Arena, swinging, sliding and climbing on the playground, dodging water cannons in the splash park, bowling with friends, picnicking on the lawn or at covered picnic tables, and getting snacks or lunch from AFC Arena Battle Bean, Bowl Arena Lanes’ Strike Zone or the summer concessions stand.

No matter the weather, there’s always something to do at the AFC Commons off Liggett Avenue at Lewis Main. The commons includes both indoor and outdoor play areas: 12

• AFC Skate Arena and Battle Bean coffee bar and grill — the skate arena offers $1 Wednesdays, teen skate night on Fridays, Saturday and Sunday sessions and roller derbies.

Battle Bean offers breakfast and lunches that include freshly made muffins and pastries, salads, madeto-order grilled paninis and much more.

• Bowl Arena Lanes — Come in to escape the occasional heat with ample seating in the Strike Zone Café.

Lanes for a quick picnic while watching the fun. If you plan to spend a good part of the day, bring your own lawnchairs or blankets in case the picnic tables are full, but leave your pets at home since it’s a pet-free area.

You’ll also find public restrooms and a changing area with an outdoor shower to rinse off for your convenience.

The commons also includes ballparks reserved for youth and adults sports and the MWR Fest Tent that accommodates unit and MWR events throughout the year, such as the recent Safety Day, spring and fall flea markets, Oktoberfest and private parties.

free once-a-year registration with Child, Youth & School Services garners your children — from infants to teens — access to quality programs and events.

There are fees for child care, sports and classes, but the many special events are free for registered youth and Families.

You know you’re getting great programs and services — the CYS Services system has been awarded Department of Defense Certification with commendation, the System of Excellence Award and accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children and National School Age Care Alliance.

Where to register, what to bring Stop by the Parent Central Services location near you to complete your child’s registration. Offices are conveniently located at Lewis Main (Bldg. 2295, 12th and Bitar) and McChord Field (inside the

For infants through school-age children, you’ll need to bring the following for registration: shot records, birth certificate, names and numbers of two local emergency contacts and any other pertinent information about your child.

Middle school and teen registration must also include parent permission for teens to be transported in a government vehicle for field trips or youth shuttles.

Children and youth enrolled in sports programs must provide a current sports physical.

Child Development Services provides child care services for children from 6 weeks through age 12. Activities are geared toward enrichment and schoolreadiness, which will help your child develop socially, emotionally, mentally and physically.

Go fishing, take a boat ride around American Lake, jump around in a bounce house, make pirate crafts and get temporary tattoos. You’ll also have fun with face painting, karaoke, a treasure hunt, BINGO and a tasty barbecue.

A taste of what EFMP camp is like EFMP Camp JBLM was established in 2008. Last year’s camp hosted 60 EFMP Families; there were 240 attendees, including 56 overnight guests and 184 day campers.

Overnight campers arrived late Friday afternoon, signed for their cabins and enjoyed a pizza dinner and an evening movie.

Saturday began with a continental breakfast for overnight guests and a warm welcome to day campers. Everyone enjoyed a day filled with fun camp activities like the ones listed above. Families residing in cabins enjoyed a taco salad dinner and evening campfire complete with a marshmallow roast.

Sunday morning, “Mickey Mouse” pancakes and sausages were served prior to departure.

A

s a trainer, I can tell you that most often people think the only measurement of success when it comes to a fitness program is lower body weight or lower body fat measurements. Success can come in other forms of measurement such as an increase in strength from lifting exercises or an increase in speed as a result of working on your cardiovascular system.

A neglected measurement is a decrease in one’s blood pressure. Maintaining a regular exercise program can help you control high blood pressure because regular physical activity makes your heart stronger. This simply means that your heart will be able to pump more blood through it with less effort. When your heart doesn’t have to pump so hard to push blood through it, the force on your arteries decreases and results in lowering your blood pressure. For some individuals on blood pressure medicines, it can mean the difference of no longer having to take them to control blood pressure. In my mind, that is big. However, you’ll need to keep exercising in order to keep it low.

So how much exercise do you need?

Simply adding moderate physical activities to your daily routine helps, but it does take aerobic activity to control high blood pressure. It can be as simple as doing household chores such as mowing the lawn, scrubbing floors, shooting hoops with the kids or bicycling with them after school, climbing the stairs in your house a couple of times during the day or going for a walk or jog around the block. Whatever activity you choose, start out slowly, especially if you’re a beginner.

One of our patrons was pleasantly surprised when she completed her follow-up MicroFit assessment with the Health Promotion & Wellness Office located at Wilson Sports and Fitness Center.

In just three short months, she saw the full benefit of her hard work — there was a decrease in both her systolic and diastolic blood pressures, as well as her resting heart rate. This wasn’t the only reward from her hard work, but for us fitness professionals, it’s one that very often doesn’t get the attention that it well deserves.

Eyes: When you see, your lens focuses an image of the object onto your retina, which is composed of three different cell layers — the photoreceptor layer, bipolar cell layer and ganglion cell layer. Your photoreceptive cells (cones and rods) send impulses to the brain to be interpreted. Your eye contains 7 million cones, 100 million rods and 2 million optic nerve fibers. Your eyelashes protect your eyes. If you were unable to blink, you would be blind.

Ears: Your ear not only transmits sound but also aids in balance and body positioning. The inner ear is comprised of three semicircular canals that control balance and the Organ of Corti for transferring auditory signals.

These areas have millions of hair cells that are stimulated by fluid movement in the inner ear. The movement of these hair cells stimulates the vestibular and auditory portion of the eighth cranial nerve.

Eating: When we eat, we break down our food through chewing and 30

digestive enzymes. Saliva starts the enzyme process. Water and minerals are reabsorbed back into the blood through the large intestines. Waste material is then eliminated.

Touch: Our sense of touch originates from millions of tiny nerve endings located in the bottom layer of your skin called the dermis. You have about 20 different types of nerve endings that relay sensations of hot, cold, pain, pressure and touch. You have the most nerve endings for pain. Each of your fingertips contains 100 touch receptors, and your body has 45 miles of nerve endings!
