Got a gift? Personalize it! by Patti Jeffrey
I
t seems this time of year, everyone knows someone who is either graduating, retiring, having a baby, getting married, moving out of state, or having a housewarming party, barbecue or birthday. It’s getting tougher to think of unique gifts — you might be tempted to buy a batch of gift cards and distribute them as needed. While we applaud your gift-giving habits, we also would like to point you toward the Arts and Crafts Center, your gift-giving “Specialty Shop.” A great way to save money, yet still give one-of-a-kind gifts is to shop for sale items that can be personalized, then leave them off with the embroidery, engraving, photo and sublimation (heat transfer) experts at Arts and Crafts. You can trust these experts’ advice — they’ve created hundreds upon hundreds of personalized gifts over the years. So, bring in your towels, photos, art prints, jackets, leather cases, watches, blankets and other gifts — or buy what’s already in the shop. They’ll take time to consult with you, look over designs with you, help you visualize the finished gift and work within your budget. Call the Arts and Crafts Centers at 253-982-6726 (McChord) or 253-967-5001 (Lewis) or drop by when you’re ready. They’ll be waiting for you! 10

We’re about to subject you to a blatant commercial for the Pacific Northwest. If you don’t want to get out and explore the glory of the region this summer, then you’ve either seen it all or haven’t seen it at all and don’t know what we’re talking about. However, if you’re thinking of getting out to play (and we hope you are), let us inspire you. Imagine a brisk game of volleyball at an ocean beach. A crackling campfire beside your tent. Mountain biking on remote park trails. A family picnic overlooking the Puget Sound. Ultra-fresh mountain air while backpacking. The Northwest Adventure Center at Lewis North and Adventures Unlimited at McChord Field are your one-stop recreation headquarters. We can help you gear up for all the outdoors has to offer. You may rent recreational items from one day to a week or more, depending on what you want to do. Some of the popular rentals can be reserved ahead of time, so be first in line before all the boats, camper trailers, kayaks, canoes, grills, canopies, sports equipment and picnic sets are gone. The remainder of rentals are firstcome, first-served. For detailed pricing and rental information, visit JBLMmwr.com and look under Outdoor Recreation’s Equipment Rentals. Here’s a sample of what we offer: Baby backpack carriers, binoculars, complete picnic, camping, and climbing gear, cooking pots, portable heaters and lanterns, self-contained camper trailers, pop-up campers, rollaway beds, fishing boats, kayaks, canoes, rowboats, clamming, crabbing and fishing gear, water skis, wake tubes, golf clubs, racquetball, softball, horseshoe and badminton sets, tug-of-war ropes and EZ-Up canopies. Overwhelmed with all of the YouTube videos, diet plans & fitness routines that circulate the Internet? If the latest crazes and fads in health and fitness leave you wondering what to do, you’re not alone. It’s important to know the most reliable resources of information related to your health on the Internet. JBLM fitness specialist Rich Rosenblum shares tips and his list of go-to web resources where you’ll find reputable information geared to improve your knowledge on physical activity, sport injuries and overall wellness.
Exercise technique videos Rich’s tip: No video can replace the experience of a certified trainer or other educated fitness professional. Seeking help from an educated fitness trainer can be a valuable benefit in improving your health.

minutes each week at moderate intensity, this physical activity provides only modest weight loss. Greater amounts of exercise (ie. more than 250 minutes per week) provide clinically significant weight loss.
Clark points out that it’s extremely important to replenish our bodies less than an hour after an intense workout. A quick protein shake, or even chocolate milk, will decrease fatigue, soreness and enhance recovery. Best diet: Eat more often (four to six times daily), decrease your portion size and do more throughout the day!

.. start now! Sports injuries and prevention Rich’s tip: Do you enjoy running? Then get rid of those old, beat-up running shoes! You’re killing your feet and increasing your risk for injury. Visit a store that specializes in running for a great-fitting pair. The experts will help find you a shoe that works best for your gait.
Find out more at orthoinfo.aaos.org. Hydration and supplements Rich’s tip: Check your weight before and after an intense workout. If your post-workout weight is just 2 percent below your average weight after a workout, you’re considered dehydrated. This will seriously hinder strength, endurance, coordination and mental acuity. Rehydrate until normal body weight is maintained.

There’s nothing like enjoying a cookout on a summer evening with friends and family!
By Ryki Carlson, JBLM Financial Counselor
Taking some time to plan ahead can keep events with family and friends stress-free, even when they’re impromptu. Whether you’re hosting the cook out or not, these easy steps will help you stretch your food budget. The main entree is usually the most expensive. Search for deals on value packs of meat when grocery shopping. These packages offer meat at a lower cost per pound than smaller packages. When you purchase a large quantity of meat on sale, consider marinating the meat ahead of time and freezing any unused portion. It’s fine to freeze 26
pre-marinated meat for later cooking, provided you’re using fresh meat that was never frozen. If the meat has been frozen before, cook it prior to freezing for future meals. Take the time to write the date and contents on the package. Saving money is easy if you make side dishes from ingredients on hand. Consider using recipematcher.com or supercook.com to find recipes that use ingredients already in your pantry. Not only does this help you stay in budget, it helps use up items that find their way into the back of your pantry shelves. If you’re hosting the cookout, have
everyone bring something. A potluck approach offers all your guests a variety of choices, saves you time and reduces expenses. Lastly, make a fresh batch of iced tea or lemonade; it goes a long way in satisfying thirst on a warm summer day.

Packets with schedules, logs and related materials will be handed out to everyone who signs up. • Storytimes and activities at the McChord Library Tuesdays at 1 p.m. for youth and 3 p.m. for teens beginning July 5. • Children’s storytimes at the Book Patch Library Wednesdays 10:30–11 a.m. starting June 22. • Activities for children and their parents or guardians at the Book Patch Library Thursdays from 1–3 p.m. starting June 23. • Those who complete their logs will be invited to a party in August celebrating the end of the program and accomplishments of all the participants.
Parties will be held at both libraries. You may register for the summer reading program at either library and participate in all age-appropriate activities. Some activities may have limited space or number of projects; you’ll be informed ahead of time if you need to sign up for an upcoming activity.
Libraries go medieval You’ll see a transition to the middle ages at Book Patch Library during Thursday afternoon activities. Themes will encompass princes and princesses, knights, sword making, dragon masks, unicorn crafts and a scavenger hunt, among other energetic endeavors. At McChord, children can gather at stations for the theme of the week each Tuesday, such as making medieval hats and crowns, preparing medieval food, making a coat of arms and stained-glass window art, being part of brave tales, playing games, and more.

McChord Library also has fun for teens, adults The McChord Library encourages teens and adults to also get involved in summer reading. “We’re inviting adults to bring in their creative works for an exhibit July 5–19,” says Mary Lengel, coordinator of adult programming at McChord. “If you can paint, quilt, photograph, sculpt, make jewelry, a collage or anything creative, we’ll put it on display for the ‘Midsummer Knight’s Read’ theme. Bring in your original pieces June 27–July 3 ready for display. We’ll place smaller or more delicate works in a display cabinet.” Teens get their own fun on Tuesdays from 3–4 p.m. They’ll be able to build forts, play ‘capture the flag,’ practice calligraphy, make dragon origami, have a party at the McChord Field pool and make new friends in the process. As they track their reading hours, they’ll receive prizes.
For more information about the summer reading program, contact: • The McChord Library, Building 851, Lincoln Blvd., ground floor at 253-982-3454. • The Book Patch Library, Building 2109, N. 10th & Pendleton, inside Grandstaff Library at 253-967-5533. Past summer reading participants enjoy not only books, but all kinds of weekly fun with a party celebrating those who finish the program.

Continuing to read prevents loss The summer reading program is invaluable for learners. Research shows that reading over the summer prevents reading loss. Some researchers estimate 50–67 percent of the achievement gap, for children living in poverty and for children of color, is the result of summer learning loss (Dominican University). “We’ve learned that students who read for fun outperform those who don’t. Students read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests,” says Georgia Cartner, Book Patch Library children’s specialist. “Our libraries are committed to supporting lifelong learning and educational enrichment for all our families.”
