Get fit, be strong with the free Youth Fitness Program The Youth Fitness Program at JBLM is open to teens ages 13–18 and is a free opportunity for teens to work on cardio health and strength training. After teens complete the required on-site fitness assessment (with a parent/guardian present), they may work out during program hours — weekdays from 3–7 p.m. at Jensen Family Health and Fitness Center, 2022 Liggett Ave. at Lewis Main. Proper fitness attire is required. The Youth Fitness Program is part of the Get fit, be strong! initiative, which is a special youth sports program designed to help keep children strong and fit as parents protect and serve. Youth Fitness Program participants must be registered with CYS Services; sign-up for the program is ongoing. For more information, call 253-967-2405.

Get involved with JBLM youth centers Middle school and high school students are invited to check out the

youth centers at JBLM — find fun, friends, sports, games and more. Whether you want to shoot some hoops after school, unwind with a game of pool or video games, the Teen Zone and McChord Youth Center are the places to be. The Teen Zone is located inside Hillside Youth Center 6397 Garcia Blvd. at Lewis Main. McChord Youth Center is located at 3032 Dogwood St. at McChord Field. If you’re registered with CYS Services, stop by and feel free to introduce a friend to the fun at JBLM youth centers! Students in grades 6–12 may complete a self-registration application online or at the youth centers (center staffers will verify the application with parent/ guardian before completing enrollment). Opportunities include before- and after-school recreation, open recreation programs, summer and school vacation camps for middle school students, field trips and more. Before-school and summer activities are paid programs. Programming includes Keystone Club, Torch Club, Power Hour, Work

Force and Technology Center, all of which are designed to teach citizenship, values and leadership and are made possible through partnerships with the Boys and Girls Club of America, 4-H Club, Red Cross, National Alliance for Youth Sports and Character Counts.

Become a youth sponsor Wouldn’t moving be easier if you knew someone at your new location? CYS Services and the School Liaison Office thought so, too! With the Youth Sponsorship Program, your middle school student or teen can make friends and learn about JBLM before ever even stepping foot on base! The program puts new youth in contact with a youth familiar with JBLM — they can email questions and answers and help make the transition easier. The program is a great opportunity to get involved and make new friends! Current JBLM youth can get involved at youth centers at Lewis Main and McChord Field. A sponsor request form and a transition video are available at JBLMmwr.com/cys.html.

Celebrate summer with a splash, swim or trip to the park Splashing zone at Splash Park If you didn’t make it to the splash park during it’s temporary opening last month for the 80-degree weekend, don’t fret — its now open for the summer! Your little ones and you can splash, swing and play to your hearts’ content. Grab your sunscreen, water and snacks, and head to The Commons at Lewis Main. With a view of Mount Rainier on clear days, the area is adjacent to AFC Arena and Bowl Arena Lanes off Liggett Avenue and houses the splash park, a playground and skate plaza. Plus, with a covered picnic area, you can take a break and enjoy a snack or lunch in the shade. The splash park is open daily through Labor Day from 9:30 a.m. to dusk. The water’s not heated, and no lifeguards are on duty. Cool off on hot days at the splash park! If you’re the first one there or the water’s stopped, touch any of the four red poles to get the fun started. Snacks are available for purchase

at Bowl Arena Lanes and Battle Bean Café, which is inside AFC Arena (check JBLMmwr.com for hours). The Commons is fully wheelchairaccessible, including the playground and swings (there’s also a soft-fall zone). Restrooms are on site, and this is a pet-free area. For more information, call 253-967-4661.

Swimming outside or in at JBLM If you want to swim, take a trip to Shoreline Park at Lewis North, the outdoor pool at McChord Field or an indoor pool at Lewis Main. Shoreline Park is open through Labor Day for swimming (with lifeguards),

paddle boating, canoeing, kayaking, picnicking and more. It’s a great place for warm-weather fun on a weekday afternoon or the weekend. For pool hours, locations and programming, visit JBLMmwr.com/aquatics.

Run, walk & play at JBLM parks In addition to the park at The Commons, you can swing lakeside at new parks near Russell Landing Marina. If you want to enjoy the view with a nice walk, take to the trails — they connect Shoreline Park to Russell Landing Marina and continue to Summer Cove, JBLM’s newest park. Find details online.

COUPLES & MONEY

Building financial compatibility By Arnie Norem, JBLM Financial Readiness Program

W

hen it comes to money, men and women view it, spend it and invest it very differently. Differing behaviors and beliefs about finances can create conflicts. If left unaddressed, money conflicts can undermine the foundation of relationships. The five most common ways couples disagree about money: 1 Savers versus spenders: Often couples come at the money issue from different philosophical approaches. You may look at the wallet as half empty while your spouse sees it as half full. Compromise becomes an ally — when you have different spending habits, find a reasonable and sensible plan you can both live with. 2 Dueling over debt: Debt causes a loss of freedom and flexibility and can add stress and strain. Partners often have differing perspectives about borrowing money and conflicting views about proper debt use. The first step is acknowledging that you have a debt problem and committing to address the issue. 3 Risk-takers versus security-seekers: Couples make decisions by different sets of rules and guidelines. There are numerous factors that contribute to our willingness or reluctance to take risks, including Family backgrounds and past money experiences, whether successes or

failures. Viewing your partner’s approach with respect and appreciation and valuing what they bring to the table can surge you ahead financially. 4 Exasperating expectations: Men and women carry into relationships hundreds of expectations, assumptions and beliefs about how things should be done. Will both partners work? Who will pay the bills? Will we have separate or joint accounts? Discuss and explore with your spouse the expectations that you’ve both brought into the relationship. 5 Flying blind: Couples that are simply unfocused and inattentive to their personal finances have difficulty staying on top of money matters. Not knowing how to manage the household finances can sabotage a relationship and create obstacles for long-term goals. If you and your spouse are reckless with money and let your finances become jumbled, you jeopardize your dreams and goals as well as take on unnecessary stress and tension. To build financial compatibility and cooperation, talk through your money issues. You’re in a position to make great decisions, strategically work together and use the strengths each of you has to offer. This involves: Taking the time to talk: Talk is cheap — it’s the silence that’s expensive. Communicating about your money will not only build a stronger bank balance but also a more robust relationship. A commitment to working it out: Conflict management requires patience

and persistence. A lasting relationship results from the ability to resolve the inevitable conflicts. Creative compromising: It’s a key ingredient for the success of any relationship and for the healthy handling of money. Accentuating accountability: When you join forces in pursuit of a shared ambition, the result is powerful. Daring to dream: The best relationships involve people who have a clear vision of the life they’re pursuing together. Human nature and busy lives have a knack for putting off life’s little inconveniences like dealing with your finances. Remember this: Couples who argue most about money often end up with the greatest debt and the smallest savings. The more time you and your partner spend openly discussing your expectations, the easier it will be to understand each other’s needs. For more information, call Army Community Service at 253-967-1453 or the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 253-982-2695 to schedule an appointment or register for an upcoming class. Learning & earning

ake advantage of the free summer reading program at JBLM libraries — one of the best ways to keep your children’s reading skills in top form while having a blast. In fact, reading benefits everyone — toddlers who are read to by their caretakers, grandparents enjoying books with their grandkids, and even kids reading to their pets. This year, the reading program takes you around the world with the theme, “Have Book — Will Travel.” All ages are welcome to register, earn prizes and take part in weekly events — from prereaders to seniors! Registration starts Monday, June 17 at McChord and Book Patch libraries; the program lasts June 24–Aug. 2. 28

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus • June 2013

When you sign up, you’ll each receive a program packet, plus a free reading program T-shirt (while supplies last). Everyone gets a progressively bigger prize for each reading log you complete (limit of three prizes). When you complete your reading logs, pick up your prizes at the library where you registered. When you finish the program, you’ll get to attend an end-of-program party that celebrates your accomplishment. The coordinated schedule at JBLM libraries includes: • Free activities at McChord Library Tuesdays at 1 p.m. for youth, 3 p.m. for tweens-to-teens and 5 p.m. for adults starting June 25. • A special children’s summer reading

program storytime and craft at Book Patch Library Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. starting June 27 (in addition to the regular Wednesday storytime at Book Patch). • Free hands-on activities for all summer reading program participants, from prereaders to teens, at Book Patch Library Thursdays from 1–3 p.m. starting June 27.

Read all you want, attend weekly activities for prereaders to adults Any type of reading counts on your reading logs. You can read magazines, textbooks, work-related courses, novels, menus, children’s books and more. It even counts when you read aloud to others — your dog, your grandson or your baby!

Book Patch’s activities cover the globe If you can come to weekly activities, we guarantee it’ll be fun! For instance, Thursdays at Book Patch, we’ll make Egyptian, European and Asian masks, headdresses, puppets, crowns, hats, flyers that soar through the air and more. We’ll even go on a scavenger hunt and decorate sidewalks with chalk! Drop in whenever you can within the time frame and join in!

McChord stacks fun throughout the day At McChord, prereaders through school-agers can decorate and learn to throw Australian boomerangs, make

flutes and play them, create airplanes and trinket boxes, go on an interactive scavenger hunt, create Russian crafts and much more. Free tickets are available for each event a week beforehand; come pick up yours at the front desk. McChord Library’s tween-teen time includes hands-on, fast-paced team fun, such as a slingshot competition, “ghost busters international” guessing game, physical challenge games and more team challenges. The best part? No parents are allowed, but all the fun you can handle will be there! Adults get your own time at McChord with special speakers Tuesdays at 5 p.m. For instance, the adult program kicks off Tuesday, June 25 with “Getting the Most out of Your Travel Dollars: Spend Less and Get More” with Leisure Travel Services. Other evenings include how to travel around Europe easily, a Latin dance workshop, Antarctica and global warming, plus more. Additionally, each adult will be given a scratch ticket when you register for the summer reading program — exchange your winning ticket for a free book! Questions about the summer reading program? Stop by Book Patch Library inside Grandstaff Library at 2109 N. 10th & Pendleton (Lewis Main) or call 253-967-5533. At McChord, visit the library on the ground floor at 851 Lincoln Blvd. (by the golf course) or call 253-982-3454 for more information.

Learn about the Army’s 238-year life span & celebrate its birthday! Grandstaff Library is helping the U.S. Army celebrate its 238th birthday in June by offering an array of books, audio books, military science books and DVDs relating to this year’s theme “America’s Army: Service to the Nation, Strength for the Future.” Stop in the Grandstaff Library to see what new materials are available to check out for your enjoyment. Grandstaff is at 2109 N 10th & Pendleton (Lewis Main). Questions? Call 253-967-5889.
