ook forward to an outstanding Fourth of July with all your favorites — celebrity entertainment, classic car show, carnival rides, favorite fair foods, roving entertainers and spectacular fireworks show. Join us as we celebrate Independence Day at JBLM’s Freedom Fest at Lewis Main — it’s open to the public from noon–11 p.m. Admission and parking are free. See headliner Frankie Ballard perform live on the main stage at Memorial Stadium starting at 6:30 p.m. The opening act is Spike and the Impalers from 4–5:30 p.m. “My bread and butter is playing live,” Frankie Ballard states. “The band and I really hammer the road and I don’t want to slow down. We give everything we’ve got to put on a heck of a show. And the best is when the connection comes through one of your songs. To watch someone sing your song at the top of their lungs because they’ve been through the same thing, well, that means as much to a performer as it does to a fan, and that’s what keeps me going. I’m always trying to push myself to the next level with my stage performance. The fans deserve something great.” Along with enjoying the stage entertainment, cruise around classic beauties, custom street rods and muscle cars and trucks at the Classy Chassis car show at Memorial Stadium — vote for your favorite in the People’s Choice category by noon. Trophies will be awarded at 3:30 p.m. If you have a car or truck you want to enter, the preregistration deadline is Sunday, June 14. The preregistration entry fee is $10 per vehicle. t’s a warm afternoon when you enter the bowling center. You see several Families with their youngsters taking turns on the lanes. A 10-yearold girl scores a spare and spins around with her fist in the air. Her little brother relies on the bumpers to score some points. No matter — his parents give him a high-five and he breaks into a grin. 12

Should I buy or rent? By Arnie Norem, Armed Forces Community Service Financial Counselor
A

home is one of the most complicated and expensive purchases
you’ll ever make. It can be exciting to
•
think about buying a home, but is it the right decision for you? Buying isn’t always the “American Dream,” and renting is not always throwing money away. It can be tough to decide whether to rent or buy a house when you may be stationed in an area for only a few years. Here are some points to consider as you make your decision.
Buying may be a better choice if you: • Have money for the large initial investment involved in buying a home. • Are ready for stability and a sense of community. Buying a home automatically commits you to a region and a
• •
neighborhood. Can afford to buy a home that will allow you to itemize deductions on your tax return. Want to become a landlord if the house doesn’t sell when you are ready to move. Like to remodel and personalize your home. Want your equity to grow or willing to risk possible losses.
Renting may be a better choice if you: • Move a lot. Would you be able pay the mortgage and rent payments in the new location if the house doesn’t sell or rent? • Are unfamiliar with the area. Identifying the pros and cons of a neighborhood first will help in determining its long-term desirability. • Don’t have enough money saved to
cover the initial costs involved in purchasing a home. • Don’t care to commit the time, effort and expense of maintaining a home, which can greatly exceed those of renting. • Know you can’t make changes. With renting, the landlord may not be willing to let you paint or make modifications. • Don’t need, or will not have, any tax advantages that come with owning a home. Home-buying workshops are offered on a monthly basis in partnership with the JBLM Housing Services Office. To find out when the next workshop will be held, call HSO at 253-967-3581. Additional information, as well as one-on-one financial counseling, is also available by appointment. To schedule these services, register at JBLMfrp. checkappointments.com or call the Armed Forces Community Service Financial Readiness Program at 253-967-1453. JBLMmwr.com
