The Outdoor Recreation program’s expert guides lead you on adventure trips of a lifetime. With them, nothing is run-of-the-mill standard. Every detail is thought out, customizing the trip to create one-of-a-kind experiences you’re sure to remember. The adventure guide team recently returned from a river scout of the Owyhee River in southern Oregon. Look for awesome Family adventures at this location next year. Till then, read about their experience, learn what you can expect on excursions with ODR and sign up for an adventure trip today! By Alisha Bator, Outdoor Recreation programmer

Day 1 The excitement was tangible — you could feel it buzzing in the air, swarming each of us like electricity. This had been in the works for months, and it was finally here. The van was loaded to the brim with a rainbow selection of dry bags. The boats were strapped down to the trailer with the oar frame secure on top, making our little posse look like we were heading for an epic adventure. The Owyhee River was 10 hours ahead of us. Ten hours of mountain passes, high deserts, semi-trucks, lunch in Bend and rest stop breaks, all the way to southern Oregon and the threebuilding “town” of Rome. The camp at the put-in was already a bustle of energy; vehicles coming and going, tents along the waterfront — and one particularly spectacular sprinter van that was the envy of every river rat setting up their campsite. Many companies were prepping for their annual customer trips, while we watched and made mental notes of the ways in which every other boat was loaded down. We had one solo oar frame holding all of our possessions, and another boat with four paddlers, which we would later come to find is a very rare occurrence on this river.

Alisha Bator

Wake up. Pack the site. Put the boats in the water. Attempt the plan to strap everything down. Notice we are the only ones in the area wearing wetsuits. Contemplate the wetsuit theory. Wear the wetsuits anyway. Put finishing touches on the oar frame. Push off, on our way! Continued on page 21.

Day 2 The Owyhee River doesn’t always bless the world with its waters. Some seasons, there is little to no water at all running through the canyon, which is a shock seeing as though in its birth there was enough depth and force to carve this massively winding river into the earth. We hit the dial just right, getting it at about 4,000 cfs, which was a wonderfully playful amount of water, just enough to cover some of the big rocks and holes but not enough to wash out all of the fun. The first two hours had us putting our fitness levels to the test, paddling across completely flat landscapes, checking the map to assess when we might come across the first rapid, questioning our life choices and pondering our surroundings as we dipped the oars and paddles into the glassy brown surface over and over again. The sight of the farm lands slowly

erupting into volcanic basalt columns in the distance brought tears to our eyes.

This is it! This is what we came for! Five-and-a-half hours, and 17 miles later we found our camping spot.

very vocally inclined to remind us of this fact, all night and all morning. There are very few words that can describe the sensation you feel when you are suddenly met with one of Mother Nature’s natural beasts. Our second day

Flat sand gave way to a sloping valley with skyline pillars looming over us; the perfect guardians for our first night on the river. A quick dip in the water to cool off left us feeling grounded and connected to the river and the landscape, yet completely free, letting the current take with it all of our troubles.

on the river led us on a roller coaster of

Day 3

Canyon. How many minerals flowed

One of the best feelings that comes with sleeping in your favorite tent is waking up with the sun, unzipping the door, pulling back the rain fly and taking in all of the sensations of the environment you have found yourself in. Unfortunately, the local geese had other plans for us. There’s a chance that we stumbled upon their morning stretching spot, and they felt

thoughts as the mouth of the canyon approached and shot up into the sky, imagining how much water had to be present to dig into the ground to get to where we were floating. Wondering how the straight, orange volcanic walls cast shade on giant black boulders at the bottom in Lambert together to create the orange, yellow, black, white and red layers of the Lambert Rocks. Most importantly, how did the land collide so drastically as to have black lava remnants next to giant red spires the size of skyscrapers exploding out of the side of the earth? The geology was confusing and breathtaking all at the same time. Continued on page 23. JBLMmwr.com

Alisha Bator

Continued from page 21. We couldn’t have found a better place to stop for the night; after 19 miles of sensational rapids and exciting river navigation, we were ready to admire what we had just come across. With untouchable walls surrounding us, we found a patch of grass nestled at the bottom of the only path for miles up to the top. A small antelope trail led from our camp to one of the lookouts over the canyon; the views did not disappoint. The sun cast shadows into the valley, but an array of bright colors danced around the mystical fairyland below us. That night we happily traded the geese for the silent protection of the canyon walls.

Day 4 With content souls, we watched the morning sunlight journey down the

rocks, just barely touching the water’s edge as we set off. As the canyon faded behind us, and the effects of its magnitude wore off, we set our sights on the future hot springs, the few more playful rapids and the home stretch to the take-out at Birch Creek Ranch. Our PNW winter had been long, so the previous days had left us crispy and forced our hand with sunscreen for our final 15 miles through the high desert of southern Oregon. Our last challenge was giving the last of our energy reserves to paddle against the wind with the end in sight, hoping that our vehicle had been safely transported by the shuttle company and would be waiting for us to pack up the boats when we arrived. When we got to the end and finished our celebratory cold-water dip, we real-

ized the vehicle had not yet made it into the canyon. A few hours later we jumped for joy and went waving wildly following our dust-covered van down the dirt road. We stayed up later than we had the entire trip that night. Positioning our Crazy Creeks toward the rock faces and starry night sky, we counted satellites, learned about astronomy, searched for the North Star and only when the wind started to howl did we decide to close the final chapter on our whitewater adventure.

boost resilience with positive thinking & tips from armed forces community service

building resiliency

ready & resilient

From time to time, we deal with an unexpected Family emergency, unreasonable people, bumper-to-bumper traffic or challenges in the workplace. These events may result in stress brought on by the emotional reaction to the challenge and not the incident itself. In order to ward off negative thinking, we can reframe what we tell ourselves about the event. By conscientiously focusing on changing our reaction to challenges, we can train ourselves to accept the things we cannot change and instead focus on reframing negative self-talk. By practicing positive reframing, we may avoid becoming overwhelmed by events that are not within our control. Should you wish to speak with someone, visit the EAP Team at Lewis Main, 2008B N. 3rd Street (Room 114). Additionally, you may also reach a member of the EAP team at 253-732-2214.

JBLM command leadership wants you to know that readiness is a top priority. For our Service members, that means they must be resilient and ready to deploy, fight and win decisively. But what does being “Ready and Resilient” mean to our Families, civilians and retirees in the community? Surviving I-5 traffic or 30 days of nonstop rain may be measures of resiliency as a JBLM community member, but it goes even deeper than that! Family resilience is an integral part of the five dimensions of the Army’s Ready and Resilient — or R2 — framework. The military recognizes that strong Families mean strong Service members and a strong military force. The resources at JBLM are abundant to help build resilience in our community to include: • Improving financial fitness. • Increasing healthy behaviors.

resiliency tip of the month

Make a Family calendar to help transition to summer vacation The kids are excited that school’s out for summer, but as we all know, the changes

in routine can result in less-than-happy campers. Maintaining as much of the usual routine as possible is helpful. Creating a Family calendar and putting it in a central place means everyone can know what to expect from the day, week or month. The Families OverComing Under Stress office — known as FOCUS — can help you develop a Family calendar and learn other skills to make summer a breeze. Don’t just get by, get stronger! FOCUS is located at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331. For details, call 253-966-6390, email JBLM@ focusproject.org or visit FocusProject.org and fb.com/FOCUSresiliencytraining. When you leave the house one day this week, take a spending vacation. With a little planning, you can leave the credit cards at home and make a big difference in your savings!

Want a sure-fire way to save money? By Rick DeChaineau, AFC®, CFP®

Having trouble starting (or continuing) to build savings? Does it seem something always comes up that cuts into what you’d hoped to set aside? Try a spending vacation! No, it doesn’t mean take a vacation and spend all you want! Instead, with a little preparation, go a day, three days or even a week without spending anything. The preparation involves making sure your gas tank is filled, you already have groceries for all the meals for that period and you’ve given the kids their lunch money for that week. Once you’ve prepared, leave your cash, debit and credit cards at home and don’t spend any money for

the time you’ve selected. It can be done! By comparing spending from other “normal” time periods, you’ll see how much you’ll be able to save (the amount you’ve been spending on “stuff”). Put that amount into a savings account that you don’t have easy access to (you may have to open an account at a new bank or credit union).
