What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

STAFF SGT. AIRIANA MaGEE works in the Intramural Sports program as an intramural sports coordinator. She’s assigned to the 627th Air Base Group, Force Support Squadron.

2

I’m from Livermore, Calif., and have been stationed at JBLM since March 2015 as a Services Airman. My current role in MWR is the Intramural Sports Coordinator. Our office works on all sport leagues offered at JBLM to encourage a healthier and more social lifestyle to active duty Service members, Family members and retirees on the installation. We start by planning our yearly sports calendar and then work on planning, executing and expanding each sport throughout the year. For me, being part of MWR is such an amazing opportunity. In Air Force-led installations, my career field would normally run all fitness opportunities with military personnel, but at JBLM, Air Force personnel only run the McChord Fitness center. We’re moving toward more of the joint base lifestyle. Not only am I given the opportunity to learn job qualifications I will need if I ever PCS, but I’m seeing the MWR way of running things and meeting amazing new co-workers and expanding my network circle. Also having an office on the Lewis Main side of this base, I get to see a lot more of what MWR has to offer. I’ve enjoyed lunch at Bowl Arena Lanes, took advantage of the sauna at Jensen Family Health & Fitness Center, and have even looked into getting Rosetta Stone from Grandstaff Library to work on learning Spanish. MWR has a lot to offer and I’m ready to help out and coordinate more outlets for our community.

Readying for the climb of your life Participate in our region’s most extraordinary venture

“Mountaineering will change your life. Some of the most beautiful scenes I have ever witnessed were up there.” – John Dorman

16

By Alisha Bator f you’ve been anywhere in Western Washington, you’ve seen some of the giant snow-covered volcanoes jutting from the landscape. There are seven of them in this state, seven volcanoes that stand out above the rest of the Cascades. These peaks are not only a stunning backdrop to our already picturesque home, but they also draw people from all over the world for hiking, camping, climbing and mountaineering. The high altitude conditions beckon adventurers of all kinds, for there are very few feelings that surpass that of conquering your own mind and finding yourself standing on top of the world. Many people see places like Mount Rainier, Mount Baker or Mount Adams and immediately know that they need to stand on top of it at least once someday; others get a taste of the adrenaline, personal conflict, struggle, triumph and every other emotion that comes with the climb and they get hooked. Scott Schissel, mountaineering enthusiast and MWR instructor, says, “I think people tend to go into mountaineering with great intentions and aspirations, only to find out how daunting

learning the right skills, gathering the appropriate gear and clothing, and finding a partner to endure the hardship of climbing can be. Although at first it can all seem overwhelming, with the right attitude, advice and training, anyone can get an altitude experience.” No matter what your goals are, safety should be your number one priority. Climbing a mountain takes hard work, perseverance, self-awareness and patience. It’s physically demanding to exert energy at altitude — adding a weighted backpack makes it that much more difficult. One must be mentally prepared to push themselves to new limits, limits that you may not have known existed until you got to the edge of that crevasse. Taking time to pay attention to your body and what it’s experiencing could be the difference between

making it to the top and unnecessarily pushing through early symptoms of serious altituderelated illnesses. Be patient with the process, take time to admire the unique scenery and take in all of the senses of this incredible feat. Scott adds, “You should climb for yourself. Never let anyone control your mountaineering destiny. Making the right choice of objectives and knowing that sometimes they might be out of reach is OK. I’ve turned around 50 feet from the top of some very famous peaks — it’s OK. Some of these peaks have been here for thousands and thousands of years. They will be here in our lifetime. Live to climb another day, I say.” So, if your dream is to slowly make your way up a glaciated, snowy peak as the sun dances Continued on next page.

colors over the mountainscape, to challenge yourself and see how far your body could take you, or just stand in the snowfield at the highest elevation you’ve ever been, then go for it! The expert mountaineering guides at the Outdoor Recreation program are here to help. The mountains in the Pacific Northwest are incredible teaching grounds and foster some of the most technical climbing around. MWR mountaineering instructor John Dorman says, “Mountaineering will change your life. Some of the most beautiful scenes I have ever witnessed were up there. I’ve seen the lip of the sun rising in the east and, as I looked across the sky, it faded through reds, pinks, blues and violets until I saw stars on the western horizon. Simply incredible.” So, if they haven’t convinced you yet, sign up for a basic alpine course next winter to learn about nutrition, gear, self-arrests, team rescues and get all of your questions answered! Then get yourself psyched up for either a climb up one of our famous peaks, or take your skills a step further and venture abroad to South America or Asia for world class experiences with MWR. Rebuilding through bodybuilding

“I’ve been through challenges before, and I wanted to prove to myself that situations don’t have to control me.” 20

By Patti Jeffrey ebecca Delong was faced with a choice of how to live the rest of her life after she was hit by a drunk driver. She sustained multiple injuries in her neck, back, hips and knee, plus was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury. Worse, her doctor told her she might not be able to walk or function the same as before. “I’ve been through challenges before, and I wanted to prove to myself that situations don’t have to control me,” she says. From the moment she heard she might not be the same, Rebecca set out to be better than before — to train her body and mind to be strong and sharp. Rebecca chose bodybuilding to help her gain more than she had lost, to rehabilitate and rebalance the use of her muscles and to help her mindset stay positive and focused. “Bodybuilding is really big in Spokane, where I grew up,” she says. “I got interested in it after I became friends with a bodybuilder I met at a pageant I was competing in. We planned

R

to enter a bodybuilding show together.” Tragically, her friend passed away unexpectedly, but Rebecca continued to train in bodybuilding even after she relocated to the Pacific Northwest. When she heard about the 2018 JBLM Bodybuilding Championship (details on next page), Rebecca knew this was her chance to demonstrate to others what she had been proving to herself — that people who go through tragedies and setbacks don’t need to succumb to them. “I hope to inspire others like myself by being onstage,” says Rebecca. “I’ve come a long way and have even been thinking about starting an online community called Avenge Fitness,” she says. “I want to mentor others how to rehab through physical

fitness and meal plans and to build a community who shares their successes and supports each other.” Rebecca is in training for the bikini portion of the bodybuilding program. Three other people, all bodybuilders and one a certified personal trainer, help shape her workouts. “My goals right now are keeping my mindset in the present and setting goals for the week ahead. I’m staying on top of my nutrition and am at the gym as much as possible,” she says. Rebecca’s advice to other bodybuilders who want to enter their first competition? “Stay focused and don’t give up when challenges come. Start working out, observe others and talk to them. Be open to learning and don’t let negativity overpower your goals.”

Are you a Service member who needs to repay a student loan?

Here’s how.

34

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus June 2018

By Kim Coffey DBA, AFC®, Financial Readiness Specialist here are two main types of student loans — federal and private. When students drop below half-time enrollment, graduate or leave school, they’ll have a six-month grace period before they’re required to make payments or the loans will go into default. If you need to repay a school loan, there are options to consider and steps to help you fill out the required paperwork. After the grace period, options are to make regular payments, set up income-based payments or to do a forbearance. Private student loans are considered to be in default after 120 days of nonpayment, and there are few options available to avoid default. Federal student loans define default after 270 days of nonpayment. Options available are loan rehabilitation, loan consolidation and repayment in full. The Public Servant Loan Forgiveness is also available for Service members, government employees and tax-exempt and nonprofit agencies. Through the PSLF, students who work in these agencies will have the ending balance forgiven after making 120 (10 years) nonconsecutive payments. Steps for the PSLF are as follows: 1. Go to the Federal Student Loans website at studentloans.gov/myDirectLoan/index.action. 2. Complete a Consolidation Loan Application and Promissory Note (this will consolidate all federal student loans and place both subsidized and unsubsidized loans in the PSLF). 3. Apply for an Income-Driven Repayment Plan (embedded in the consolidation application; however, students must re-apply annually after federal taxes are filed). 4. If you’re married, your spouse will have to co-sign the Income-Driven Repayment Plan Request. 5. Apply for the PSLF using the Employment Certification Form (go to Access Repayment Forms). 6. Mail or fax the PSLF Employment Certification Form to the loan servicer. This form must also be submitted annually. For further assistance, make an appointment with a Financial Readiness Specialist at JBLMfrp.checkappointments.com or call 253-967-1453.

EAP tip of the month June is National Safety Month Injuries are a leading cause of disability for people of all ages — and they’re the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1–44. The good news is everyone can get involved to help prevent injuries. During National Safety Month, the JBLM Employee Assistance Program office is providing information to community members on how to help reduce the risk of injuries. We encourage you to learn more about the following important safety issues: • Prescription painkiller abuse: Prescription painkiller overdoses are a growing problem in the United States, especially among women. About 18 women die every day from a prescription painkiller overdose — more than four times as many as were reported in 1999. You’ll find more information about this topic and locations where medications can be safely disposed of by visiting TakeBackYourMeds.org. • Transportation safety: Doing other activities while driving — such as texting or eating — distracts you and increases the chance of crashing. Almost one in five crashes (17 percent) that injured someone involved distracted driving. Review RCW 46.61.673: Dangerously distracted driving – Access Washington to learn more about Washington

state’s distracting driving laws at https://goo.gl/w77D7q. • Slips, trips and falls: One in four older adults falls each year. Many falls lead to broken bones and other health problems. Some factors that may lead to falls for older adults are balance and gait challenges, vision problems, reactions to medications, lack of modifications in living environment and chronic conditions that increase risk of falling as a result in loss of function, inactivity, pain and depression. To obtain more information and safety tips on how to avoid falls, slips and trips in older adults, visit https://goo.gl/qRn5FX. You can make a difference by finding out ways to help reduce the risk of these safety issues. For more information on this topic and more, contact JBLM EAP at 253-732-2214 or visit our office at 2008B N. 3rd (at Pendleton Avenue), Room 114.
