Northwest Colonial Festival What MWR means to me
August 8-11, 2019
Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.
When I first started working for MWR, I was young and ready to start a new adventure. I wasn’t really sure what MWR was besides a place for equipment checkout and maybe the occasional adventure trip, but I quickly realized it’s more than that. To me, MWR is a focus on creating experiences and memories that last a lifetime, no matter what you choose to do. It’s a place to bring friends and to make new friends. It’s a way you can escape the day-to-day life and focus on something that makes you happy. You can relax and kick back or you can have fun challenging yourself learning something a new skill. BRAD HINTON is the ODR programs manager at JBLM.
Editor’s note: Brad’s team plans and organizes group trips, clinics, events and custom trips for the Outdoor Recreation Program at JBLM. To see a list of upcoming trips, see page 27. For details and trip descriptions, visit JBLModr.com. If you’d like to plan a private trip with your group or unit, email the team at JBLMadventuretrips@gmail.com. Catch wildlife in action on camera By Kaweka Stoney Spotting a bird, mountain goat or bear along the trail always adds excitement to a hike, and photographing wildlife can be one of the most exciting and rewarding types of photography. There are plenty of great opportunities to photograph wild animals on trails and in parks all over the state. If you’re interested in capturing wildlife on camera, here are some practical tips that will save you — and the wildlife — stress and aggravation.
The golden rule of wildlife photography Before you run out, camera in hand, with a twitchy shutter finger, consider a few of the best practices of wildlife photography, and always follow the golden rule of wildlife photography: Never compromise the safety and well-being of yourself or the animal in order to get a photograph.
Pack a suitable camera Most people think that the key to getting good wildlife photos is having a giant, heavy telephoto lens that can zoom in so close you can see the fleas on the animal’s back, but
22
Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus June 2019
expensive, specialized lenses aren’t a necessity. The best practice is to pay close attention to the animal’s behavior — if it stops what it’s doing to pay attention to you, you’re probably too close. Back off to the point where the animal relaxes and resumes its normal behavior, and you’ll know how close you can get. A good rule of thumb is 25 yards away for most animals and 100 yards for predators (such as bears) or other large animals (such as goats).
Capturing your shots the right way The key to successful wildlife photography is being prepared, knowing your subject and having patience. Wildlife photography is fun because you never know what’s going to happen. If you’re lucky enough to stumble upon a wild animal at a safe distance, such as an elk, mountain goat or black bear, it probably won’t stick around long to pose for you. Do: Be prepared. Have your camera in hand or quickly accessible by using a quick-access backpack or shoulder bag. Make sure your camera is set for potentially fast-moving wildlife; tweak your presets to track focus on your subject quickly and shoot rapidly. Continued on page 26.
23 Kaweka Stoney
Do: Know your subject. If you’re looking for specific types of wildlife, research the habits of the animal before setting out on the trail. Try to find out when and where the animal is most active, what they eat and where and when that food is available. Do: Have patience. You might have the best luck finding a spot the animal frequents near the trail and hunkering down for a good old-fashioned stake out. Wait patiently — and quietly — until the animal feels safe enough to move through the area.
Practices to avoid Of course, sitting in one spot waiting — hoping — for an animal to come strolling by can be time-consuming and tedious. But you should never be influenced to encourage an encounter. Don’t: Approach or antagonize. Animals are often easily stressed by disturbances in their environment — this means people. Maintain a quiet, respectable distance from animals, indicating that you’re not a threat. If the animal appears agitated, back off slowly. Don’t: Bait or feed animals. You should never, ever try to bait an animal (including chipmunks and birds) with food in hopes of attracting it or getting it to come closer for you to photograph. The animal may become habituated to bait or human food and become aggressive in its attempts to get more. Don’t: Approach babies. While baby animals are some of the most adorable things in the world, there are often overprotective parents nearby who may become stressed or aggressive if they feel their young are being threatened by an intruder. Keep your distance.
Where to practice wildlife photography When you’re ready to give it a shot, try the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Area. The refuge was created in 1974 to protect the diverse fish and wildlife that call the Nisqually River Delta home. In addition to myriad bird species, many other species, such as harbor seals, otters and salmon enjoy these

expansive tidal flats, and interested hikers can spend many hours watching active wildlife. Another densely populated wildlife area is the Upper Skagit River. Each winter, more than 500 eagles call the Upper Skagit home as they converge to feast on spawned-out salmon. It’s the densest population of the country’s national symbol anywhere in the lower 48, so your odds are good for some amazing shots. Ready for some amazing photography?
