What does MWR do for you? Meet MWR staff members who serve you in meaningful ways

A

my Nilsen grew up hunting and fishing in a small Oregon town. Her family spent considerable time in the outdoors and taught Amy to value, respect and conserve nature. Consequently, her outdoor exposure led her to pursue a degree in fish and wildlife management. That’s a perfect fit for her current position as recreation lead of JBLM’s Shotgun Shooting Complex, and a fit with life as a military spouse. Wherever she was stationed in the past five years, Amy has sought out jobs in the Outdoor Recreation program, whether as a recreation aide or other position within MWR. Amy says she has always strived to be a leader and a person who others can count on. “The favorite part of my job is serving and giving back to the military,” Amy says. “Boosting morale among our military members is very rewarding. “Here, we’re able to provide new experiences, such as Warrior Adventure Quest shotgun events, or a parent bringing their child for their first shoot and seeing them bond, or helping plan a birthday party. That’s why I’ve stayed in MWR wherever we’ve been stationed.” Amy admits that it has been a bit of a challenge but more of an opportunity during COVID-19 mitigation efforts. She says that the biggest challenge has been the shortage

of ammunition supplies nationwide. However, when they do receive a new supply, they make sure units and military groups get what they need to use the range and build their readiness and group morale. “I love seeing our military customers come in for one thing, but look around and find that we also have an archery range and ATV rentals for our ORV Park close by,” Amy says. “For instance, our Top Shooter Competition brought in a Soldier who became really good at it, while another Soldier found more interest in archery. If we can make a difference in even one Service member’s life with an outdoor sport becoming a lifelong interest, it’s worth it to me.” Amy found out that this past year has brought unique opportunities as well. Since the facility is located on federal land, it stayed open when other ranges closed. Consequently, she saw business boom, even during the winter months. The staff has been scrupulous with following all COVID-19 mitigation standards, keeping customers’ health in mind. “One thing I’ve learned during this past year has been to never take my team or employees for granted,” says Amy. “Their value keeps our program running well. Another thing I’ve learned is to always listen to your customers and team members so you can make improvements in the areas that matter most to them.”

Left: JBLM’s Shotgun Shooting Complex recreation lead Amy Nilsen and team welcome any participants new to the shotgun sports, as well as those who want to find well-maintained equipment and consistent clay target launches. For more information, call 253-967-7056.

ODR celebrates 50 years JBLM’s Outdoor Recreation program teaches us how to live well outdoors

T

he first Army outdoor recreation program was established in 1971, and ever since has been evolving into adventures military members and their families might never have experienced in the local region where they’re stationed. JBLM’s ODR program takes advantage of the Pacific Northwest’s amazing recreational areas. From mountains to deep waters of the Puget Sound and the Pacific Ocean, our local areas abound in natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities. JBLM’s ODR program not only aims to give patrons an unforgettable outdoor experience, but goes beyond, equipping and teaching beginners to learn skills — from water sports, such as kayaking, to outdoor recreation sports, such as rock climbing. Beginner adventurers feel more comfortable with outdoor recreation in natural settings once they know what they’re doing. It’s really a quality of life issue, and now, more than ever, people are thirsting for the outdoors to experience the feeling of freedom and calm after the unsettling and stressful year we’ve had dealing with this long pandemic. “We’ve always been here for Service members with high-adventure programs, such as Warrior Adventure Quest and mountain climbing,” says Colin Brooks, ODR director. “Now, we’re moving back toward involving family members in our kids’ indoor climbing wall lessons, family programming and, once we can start up our group trips, day trips to tour waterfalls, easy hikes and other trips to local areas of interest.” Other upcoming ODR program plans include: • Being able to call on ODR experts to arrange personalized group trips for units, spouses’ clubs and other small groups. • Providing women the opportunity to participate in women’s backpacking and climbing trips, with instruction for beginners (see related article on pages 12–15). • Being able to see rental equipment in the retail store. We’re bringing back actual rental set-ups so you can see more party, camping, fishing, crabbing, scuba and other rentals from the convenience of the store rather than the rental yard.

See ODR rentals, demos, workshops & more at expo To celebrate 50 years of the Army’s ODR program, we’re inviting everyone to the Outdoor Rec Expo & Fishing Derby Saturday, June 12, 7 a.m.–1 p.m. at Shoreline Park. You’ll be able to see a variety of workshops, demonstrations, rentals and opportunities to learn about JBLM’s ODR program (see details right). The event will adhere to COVID-19 mitigation strategies.

An adventurous woman of the wild By Alisha Bator ant to expand your outdoor savvy and experience? Set your sites on becoming a woman of the wild! These outdoors enthusiasts push boundaries and charge into the unknown. They balance home life with that constant urge to seek the next great adventure and challenge. Safety first It’s no question that any time you go on an outdoor adventure, you should make smart choices to make sure the experience is exceptional and that you come back to tell the tale. Practice safe and healthy travel techniques with leave-no-trace principles and follow these

guidelines to make the journey even better. • If you can, start out your adventure by packing the 10 essentials. These items are standard throughout the year but can be adjusted with seasonal change that will have you prepared to respond to most situations. You won’t regret packing that extra layer, satellite phone or water filter — just in case. • Always tell someone your plan. It may be as simple as letting someone close to you know which hike you’re going on and when to expect you back or as detailed as a written float plan to give to the local Coast Guard on a long kayak trip. Either way, having someone know your destination and expectations will help you in unforeseen circumstances. • When in doubt, S.T.O.P. — Stay calm, Think, Observe and Plan. If you’re unsure about your path, stop moving and assess your surroundings. Pay attention to where you’re going so you can find your way back!

Greatest losers are real winners MWR Sports, Fitness & Aquatics hosted a virtual challenge, 2021 New Year’s Greatest Loser Jan. 7–April 7 at fb.com/ JBLMmwr. This fun weight-loss competition challenged our community to commit to a New Year’s resolution by adapting a healthier lifestyle. The scoring was based on highest body-weight percentage loss, and prizes included a Mirror Home Gym and one-year membership, plus an Apple Watch 6 for first place, a rower and Apple Watch 6 for second place and an Apple Watch 6 for third place. We had so many success stories! Here are a few from our winners.

Competitive, stubborn & determined to succeed Brittney Grajeda, who lost 25% body weight, was awarded first place. Here’s her story: At the beginning of 2020, I decided I was ready for a change in my lifestyle and to make myself finally feel comfortable in my own skin. My husband got back from a deployment ,and we began our journey in the beginning of February. When COVID-19 restrictions hit, my job was furloughed and the gyms were closed. It was hard to adjust to not being able to work out and losing the job I loved so much. I became complacent and gave up on myself. I lacked motivation, but when I saw that MWR was going to be doing the New Year’s Greatest Loser at the beginning of 2021, I decided to try it. I talked to my husband, and we decided that it was the best motivation for me since I’m competitive and stubborn. We came up with a plan together. My husband set up a workout plan, and I took care of the healthy meals. We built a gym in our garage so I would have what I needed to succeed and the only excuse available would be myself. My husband cheered me on and was the greatest motivation for me reaching my goals.

I’m so grateful to MWR for giving me the opportunity I needed to change my habits and make it fun. I don’t think I knew how to start on my own, but having the bi-weekly check-in gave me a goal to see big changes at each check-in. I’m now happier and healthier. I’ve been given the opportunity to show my children that if you work hard, you can accomplish things you thought were impossible. We now work out together every day, and they’re excited to see the ways we can make their favorite meals in healthier ways.

New life needed new consistency Alyssa Niedzwiedz, who lost 24.5% body weight, was awarded second place. Here’s her story: I joined the challenge because I needed something to motivate me to keep going to the gym while going through many life changes. I knew starting a new job, being new to the area and being busy could easily become excuses to skip the gym. I used this contest as motivation to keep moving even on tough days. My process started with consistently going to the gym. I began meal prepping after I realized I would eat out if I wasn’t prepared ahead of time. The biggest changes I saw were when I started making changes in the kitchen. I’ve created many positive habits that are allowing me to stay healthy with my busy schedule. I’m so thankful that I had the Greatest Loser challenge to help me form these good habits.

impacting our lives. We were adamant we would not do a quick-fix fad diet. We started slowly and got stricter and worked out more toward the end. Justin was the definite driver of workouts and motivation, and I planned and cooked the meals. We definitely were a team! We wouldn’t be able to do what we did without each other’s support. We have three kids, and they watched us and also wanted to work out and make healthier choices — and that really makes it all worth it! We inspired and taught them something that will help them live a healthier lifestyle, and we continue to go out and do more outdoor activities as a family. Between us, we lost a total of 75 pounds. We’re grateful for MWR holding the competition and giving us a kick-start to getting back to health. We look and feel better and make better choices overall. This was a life-changing experience!

Double the support Justin Bezerra, who lost 23.3% body weight, won third place. He and his wife Brooke both decided to enter the contest; she placed seventh. They had just arrived at JBLM and not only wanted to get healthier but to meet new people. Here’s their story, as told by Brooke: We had heard the saying, “90 days to build a habit,” and the contest was 90 days, so we wanted to give it a try. We both were at our heaviest weights ever and it was definitely Courtesy photo

MWR Staff Picks I definitely hold a bias for BOSS. It has contributed to military readiness, I’ve met the coolest people and it has taught me the importance of community. My MWR top picks are Warrior Zone, Outdoor Recreation and Grandstaff Library. I love the food at Warrior Zone Café and watching movies in the theater room. BOSS has been able to do really cool events because

of Outdoor recreation, like snowboarding and tubing. Growing up, I basically lived at my local library, so I absolutely love going into Grandstaff Library and seeing all the amazing resources they have to offer. I personally use their e-learning resources like Universal Class to learn new subjects, Mango Languages, and Test Prep to help me advance in my military career!

Start a home business as an FCC provider It’s easy with free FCC training & resources

L

ooking for a fun and rewarding home business? If you live on base at JBLM, become a Family Child Care provider and make a difference in the lives of military children and their families. FCC providers earn up to $2,000 a month, may qualify for subsidies and receive free resources for your business. Learn about FCC at the monthly evening orientations at the FCC office (no children allowed at the orientation due to space/discussion topics). Full-day training classes will meet weekdays following the orientation. All classes are required for FCC certification. FCC has unique qualities that make it a preferred choice for many families. It offers flexible hours — full-day, part-day, extended or overnight, weekend and hourly care in a comfortable home setting. FCC providers are vetted and only the best qualified candidates are recommended for certification. Providers must complete background checks and regular home inspections as a part of certification. They also receive paid ongoing training for professional development. We’re offering two bonuses to qualified FCC providers:

Relocation Bonus: Up to a $1,000 relocation bonus will be provided to FCC providers who successfully relocate their home business to a gaining installation. Providers will receive payments over a 12-month period. Payments will begin upon home certification and enrollment of at least two children who are unrelated to the provider. Payments will be disbursed monthly with an initial payment of $120 and $80 thereafter (for the next 11 months). If the home closes or certification is lost during this time, all remaining payments will be forfeited. Recruitment Bonus: Up to a $1,000 recruitment bonus will be provided to FCC providers who successfully open their homes. This is a one-time incentive. The FCC Office is at 2275 Liggett Ave., Lewis Main. Call 253-967-3039 to reserve a spot. Visit JBLMcys.com for more details.

Each month, hear what different JBLM Service members, family members, civilians and others like to do in their spare time.

Sgt. Joshua Moore

Last splurge: I bought a bunch of baby clothes for the newest addition to the family.

Last TV show you watched: “Black Sails,” which is one of the best shows on the planet.

Last time you were embarrassed: I argued with my wife for about 15 minutes, and she ended up being right.

Last adventure you went on: Mount St. Helens on a backpacking trip after getting some great tips from the folks at Northwest Adventure Center.

Last time you laughed: At the movie, “The Emperor’s New Groove.” That movie is way ahead of its time — hilarious!

Latest pet peeve: When my Great Dane shakes slobber all over the walls, kids and everything I own.

Last time you worked out: Every morning at Wilson Sports & Fitness Center for PT. Courtesy photo
