Is it springtime yet? It’s March, which means we’ve had our share of the cold, wet winter weather. While we still have many weeks of wintery weather in front of us, the official first day of spring is just around the corner. Whether you want to bid a fond drawn–out farewell to winter or look ahead and welcome spring as soon as possible, Family and MWR is there for you. Choose from dozens of activities and events, both in the elements and inside where it’s warm. If you love the outdoors, one could argue you couldn’t be at a better installation. Hit the slopes, bike through the tulips or jump off a bungee bridge with the Northwest Adventure Center’s outdoor recreation program. See the calendar of upcoming trips on page 20. Other ways to enjoy the winter–spring transition: attend the Travel Show to plan a getaway (page 9) and check out Brewfest (page 10). Plus, with music and food, the St. Patrick’s Day Fun Run is an event for the entire community; see page 26 for details. As always, I’d like to hear from you. Please take a few minutes to share your experiences with Family and MWR — visit http://ice.disa.mil. Sincerely, William E. Harvey Director, Family & MWR at JBLM

N
o matter what time of afternoon or evening you come in, you immediately hear the buzz of excitement in the background. It’s the click of billiard balls, the zap and boom of computer games, the bass thump of theater speakers, the drone of music videos. The Warrior Zone is alive with the sounds of recreation, and it’s drawing diverse crowds from around JBLM. The dining area opens daily at 6 a.m.; some who work at Lewis North drop by during breaks, sipping Battle Bean coffee while reading a newspaper or magazine, lounging in the sunlit lobby just inside the doors. Others begin dropping by after 11 a.m. to check out a computer for personal study, surfing or skyping with friends back home. Many come in for a meal in the spacious dining area, then eat with co-workers or sit on bar stools watching overhead TVs. And so it goes until the place fills up through the night. “It doesn’t take long to see that the Warrior Zone caters to more than one type of patron,” says John Talaske, MWR Information and Technology specialist and frequent patron. “You find people who want to eat, drink, shoot some pool, play shuffleboard, listen to music or talk on the café and sports lounge side, and the gamers who come in to compete or those who like to surf the Internet on the hi-tech side.” Indeed, the tempo is lower-key for those who like to relax and ramped up for those who like intensive gaming — all in the same complex. “It’s a place to have fun,” says Elizabeth Thunstedt, Warrior Zone manager. “You get off work and come here to relax, like a big living room.” When you first come in, the immensity might catch you off-guard. There’s just so much to do, where do you start? Here are some tips to get you going: Bring your ID card to swipe at the front counter. You’ll need it if you want to use one of the 40 Internet computers, 32 Alienware gaming computers or 53 HD TVs (16 of them dedicated to PlayStation and Xbox). The front desk checks out the games, game equipment, headsets and individual speakers for you.

Above: Gamers have myriad choices for role playing, shooter or strategy games, such as the latest versions of “World of Warcraft” or “Star Wars.“ Sgt. Jamel Abaulaziz enjoys a chicken chipotle wrap for lunch in the dining area at the Warrior Zone. Bottom right: Eight Brunswick pool tables are constantly in use, as well as a shuffleboard game nearby.
If you’re coming in to lay back and watch a hi-def movie in the theater, showtimes are 11 a.m., 5:30 and 8 p.m., plus an 11 p.m. showing on Friday and Saturday nights. You also can relax with pool, shuffleboard, cribbage, backgammon, dominoes and other table games. The advantage of table games is you can play them anywhere — in the dining area, patio, lobby or other sitting areas. Ask for the games at the front counter. When the weather gets warm, the outdoor patio with a fire pit becomes another great hangout, since it also features overhead TVs and plenty of seating. Look for even more recreation as events come up. “We’re planning tournaments, we can set up a stage for open mic nights, karaoke or dances, we might get a class going on how

nto the Woods brings the outdoors to JBLM youth at this year’s Kids’ Fest celebration. Join Family and MWR at AFC Arena Thursday, April 5, 1–4:30 p.m. for free hands-on fun, music and much more. This is the 20th year for Kids’ Fest, which is JBLM’s celebration for the Month of the Military Child. Held annually during Clover Park School District’s Spring Break, Kids’ Fest is a “festival specifically designed for our military children,” says Kate Laverents, special events coordinator.
14
This year’s event will feature more than 30 hands-on activities about life in the woods — kids will learn about camping, animal life, trees, birds and more. Magic
Popular parenting program at JBLM By Jeanne Morrow, Family Advocacy Program
W
e love our children and they love us. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t going to occasionally use whatever tool or weapon they have in their small arsenal to get their own way. Typically, those tools include testing and manipulation. How do they develop these skills? Not sure. But testing limits is a purposeful behavior, designed to break down your resolve as a parent to impose rules and limits. Dr. Thomas Phelan, the author of the highly popular parenting program “1–2–3 Magic,” suggests that children use six primary methods of testing and manipulation to get their way. “Testing occurs when a child is frustrated. Since your child has less power than you, she must use some sort of emotional manipulation to get what she wants.” Children tend to stick with six recognizable testing methods that include badgering, tempers, threats/intimidation, martyrdom, buttering up and physical tactics. Which method a child chooses
depends on its success. If a particular method works, why not try it again the next time?
Let’s look at an example: You have told your 12-year-old that she can’t watch a TV show that you deem to be too mature for her. The conversation may go like this:
C: “Please, please, please... !” (badgering) P: “No.” C: “I’ll do the dishes for the next week, and keep my room clean!” (buttering up) P: “No.”
C: “I hate you!” (intimidation)
C: “Fine!” as she kicks over garbage can with her foot on way out of room. (physical tactics) The mom in this scenario successfully thwarts her child’s manipulation attempt because she doesn’t give in to any of the tactics. In this case, the parent made a solid decision that a TV show is inappropriate, explained it to her child and then without being pulled into a negotiation, sticks with her decision. Eventually the child gives up.
P: “No.”
Continued on next page.
Child: “Can I watch “Gossip Girl”? Parent: “No. You are too young for that show.” C: “But all my friends watch it!” P: “No.” C: “You are being unfair!” (martyrdom) P: “No.”

Family & the homefront Continued from previous page.
It takes time for this to become a routine — especially if your child has had some success with a form of manipulation in the past. If guilt and martyrdom have worked, children will certainly try that route again.
Let’s look at the scenario where the child wins the battle: Child: “Can I watch Gossip Girl?” Parent: “No. That show’s too mature for you.” C: “All my friends get to watch it! I feel left out when they all talk about it and I can’t!” P: “I’m sorry, but I don’t like the way the girls dress and talk on that show.” C: “Oh Mom, McKenzie’s mom and Hailey’s mom let them watch it!” P: “Well …” C: “Everyone in my class has a cell phone except me, everyone wears make-up except me and now I can’t even watch the same shows! Everyone is going to start making fun of me!” P: “OK, fine! But I don’t want to hear you start talking like the girls on that show!” This child has realized that her mom can be manipulated with a dose of good ol’ fashioned guilt and martyrdom. Maybe mom feels guilty that her child doesn’t have a cell phone, or maybe she worries that she won’t be “liked” by her daughter. Whatever the reason, this child has broken mom’s emotional code. If your child attempts to get her own way through manipulation, it doesn’t mean your child is abnormally problematic. As adults, we often use the same forms of manipulation to get our own way as well; however, we hopefully have some sort of self-regulation and insight that tells us when something is not good for us. Children continue to require that regulation from their parents or other adult caregivers. As parents, our obligation to our 18
children is to help them find their way in life while providing the structure and guidance that they would most likely not provide for themselves. If you find your child can often talk you into something that you initially refused, it may mean that you are easily manipulated. Ask yourself what the reasons might be for this. Guilt? The need to be popular with your child? Perhaps you merely came to view the situation differently. It’s worth examining.
Some tips for dealing with testing and manipulation: • Have a basic idea of your limits before you set them with your child. If you’re setting curfews or TV limits haphazardly, you may be prone to being wishy-washy when your child tries to negotiate with you. • Expect kids to act out a little more aggressively when you no longer allow yourself to be manipulated. They’re going to get more frustrated when they realize their old tactics no longer work. They may also switch tactics (from martyrdom to badgering) if they feel they’re being unsuccessful. • If your child acts out in an aggressive way, there should be consequences for that behavior. • Remain emotionally neutral, if possible. If your child sees you becoming exhausted, frustrated or guilty, they know they’re on the road to a successful manipulation. (“I’m wearing her down!”) • Be consistent. For more parenting tips and to sharpen your skills, join the Family Advocacy Program experts for the full “1–2–3 Magic” class offered monthly through the New Parent Support Program. omeone once said, “Service is not as much about good actions, as it is about good feelings; creating them in others, and experiencing them within. It is not so much about doing, as it is about being; being one’s best …. Good deeds, like good works, are but priceless opportunities to experience and share our being’s deepest nature: joy.” JBLM’s more than 3,000 volunteers couldn’t agree more about community service. Last year, they contributed more than 100,000 hours to our community and made countless differences in our organizations. The Volunteer Corps at our installation helps to truly enhance the quality

he shotgun and skeet range at JBLM had been closed for renovation since early fall, but it reopened in mid-February. If you haven’t yet seen the improvements, you’re in for a treat. “The Recreational Shotgun Complex looks much better — a 200-percent improvement,” says Dave Pedroza, shooting facility manager. “The biggest improvement is that Range 3 is now wheelchair accessible with new blacktop pavement to the structure.” The complex — actually six ranges, each with its own structure — is more
durable and comfortable for patrons, according to Pedroza. For instance, all the houses are newly painted, the old wooden stairs replaced by sturdy aluminum stairs, new brick walls instead of wooden walls and trap houses that fully protect the clay-shooting machinery from weather. Other renovations include a new floor in the clubhouse, heat in the warehouse and ATV shed and a new fence. Overall, the range offers a more comfortable experience for sports enthusiasts. the finish line Race-day fuel for your next run Whether you’re a seasoned runner or recreational jogger, your body can benefit from the food you eat. Here are some tips on how to get fit and perform at your optimum. Keep them in mind for the St. Patty’s Day Run, plus upcoming sports and fitness events like the Down & Dirty Mud Runs and the Triple Threat Triathlon 20th Anniversary Series. You’ll also find them helpful for a hard workout at the gym. Before the race, have a banana or piece of fruit. Your muscles need a ready source of energy to function at their best and avoid fatigue. A diet high in carbohydrates, such as fruits and vegetables, provides your body with the right amount of glycogen, a ready source of energy. While you’re pounding the pavement (or working out in the gym), remember to drink plenty of fluids. Water is generally all weekend-athletes need for hydration. After you cross the finish line, have a small protein snack. In clinical trials, participants who had 10 grams of protein after vigorous exercise experienced less muscle soreness. Try yogurt, low- or non-fat cheese or peanut butter on a whole grain “skinny” bagel. The Northwest weather will be getting warmer, so enjoy outdoor activities to keep you and your Family healthy. Remember, the key is nutritious foods and exercise. — Lynn Larson, RN, Nurse educator for Health Promotion & Wellness Service Army Wellness Center (currently at Wilson Sports & Fitness Center)

rotecting yourself from identity theft can save you hours of frustration and thousands of dollars. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2010 results, the United States had more than a quarter-million identity theft victims. Cell phones that keep us connected to Family, friends and work also allow data access to thieves if we leave them unprotected. As the capabilities of cell phones and smartphones have increased with technology, the risk of identity theft has increased. Many cell phones today are small mobile computers. Invest a few moments to protect your identity by considering the following steps to reduce your risk: • Never keep account or credit card information, passwords, PIN numbers or Social Security numbers on your cell phones.
websites when you are finished. • Lastly, monitor your credit report. You can pull all three credit reports for free from annualcreditreport.com. If you space them out throughout the year, you can pull one every four months. Remember the more aware you are of your surroundings and your actions, the safer your identity will be. For more information on identity theft, call Army Community Service at 253-967-1453 or the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 253-982-2695.
Q: How is the minimum payment on my credit card calculated?
A:
Companies set their own calculations for minimum payments to allow consumers to pay a portion of the principal. When you pay more than the minimum payment, the difference goes toward the principal balance. For example, if your minimum payment was $20 and you paid $100, the extra $80 goes toward lowering the balance. The $80 dollars does not pay ahead for four months; you’ll still have a payment the following month. The “Terms and Conditions” of your credit card agreement explains how your minimum payment is computed. The industry standard is either 3–5 percent of the total balance due or all fees and interest due that month plus 1 percent of the principal.
