Make an impact By Patti Jeffrey
W
ant to go all out and “go green”? What does that mean, anyway? Well, it’s as simple as buying a used home or yard item at our Spring Flea Market or using your JBLM library card to check out the latest novel or video.
A customer at the MWR Auto Center at McChord Field changes his oil under bright lighting in a heated, dry and clean facility. You can rent a lift for less than $10, and the staff safely disposes used oil and other fluids for you. You also can use the Auto Center at Lewis Main for all your car care needs. For complete details, visit JBLMmwr.com/auto.
If you can visualize how everything you do affects everything else around you, then you can understand the importance of going green. For instance, let’s say your neighbor at JBLM needs to change the oil in his vehicle, but he wants to save money and do it himself. He could do it in his driveway and dump the used oil in the trash or sewer drain. Hundreds of fish, birds and wildlife in the Puget Sound will have to live with his choice. Or perhaps the oil makes its way through the groundwater into JBLM’s well-water drinking supply. Not a good situation for you or anyone. Instead, he can choose to rent a stall or lift at an MWR Auto Center for less than $10, change his oil in a warm, dry place and have the staff safely dispose the used oil and other fluids for him. It’s as simple as that. Here are more ideas to help you and your neighbors go green every day:
Save gas, preserve environment while getting outdoors

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus • March 2015
Spring fever is hitting hard and we’re all heading outdoors! It’s more fun and saves gas when you travel with a group to go kayaking, hiking, mountain biking and whitewater rafting. Another bonus
today by ‘going green’! — you’re getting in better shape with each human-powered activity. Sign up for a number of trips with the Northwest Adventure Center. See the Adventures section for complete details. Did you know that JBLM has two Audubon-certified golf courses? Both Eagles Pride and Whispering Firs go to great lengths to preserve the natural environment and beauty of the surrounding area. If you’re into bird watching, walk the many specially marked trails at Eagles Pride, situated next to Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. When you golf at either location, you can take pride in your support of going green on these environmentally friendly courses. For more information on golf events and specials, turn to pages 8–9.
Stay green & lean! Along with human-powered outdoor adventures and golf, enjoy the many races JBLM offers year-round! Sign up now for Saturday, March 14’s JBLM Shamrock ‘N Run “Go Green” 5K run and walk and 10K run. Details are on page 20. Coming up: the infamous Down & Dirty Mud Run, triathlon “Triple Threat” series, Salmon Run 5K/12K, Zombie Apocalypse Run, Turkey Trot 5K/10K Fun Run and annual Polar Skip & Dip 2K/5K Fun Run and Walk. For more information on races, visit JBLMmwr.com/races. There’s no easier way to get fit than to join aerobics classes at JBLM! They’re all free and you can find one or more that fit your schedule. Choose from Zumba, yoga, step, kickboxing, group weight training, TRX, no-contact mixed martial arts, pilates, spin cycle, CrossFit and other specialty classes at one of JBLM’s
fitness centers. For complete schedules, visit JBLMmwr.com/fitness. Like team sports? Join a JBLM intramural sports team or volunteer to coach or assist with your children’s Child, Youth & School Services youth sports. Turn to the Feelin’ good section for adult sports and the Family & the homefront section for volunteer opportunities with youth sports.
Create your own home items & learn crafts McChord Library shows you how to “upcycle” and make beautiful crafts and useful household items from recycled materials. The Upcycle Craft Night meets the third Wednesday of each month at 5 p.m. All materials are provided. McChord Library also provides free classes in crochet. Some classes require registration; visit JBLMmwr.com/libraries. The Arts & Crafts Center at McChord Field is introducing new classes in beginning and intermediate sewing, popular paracord (lightweight nylon rope) bracelets, book making, glass mosaics and more. Find details at JBLMmwr.com under Arts & Crafts.
Reuse & rent learning materials Here’s where you can really save money while going green. If you’re in college or other higher education classes, rent all your textbooks from the MWR Bookstore! With more than 6 million textbooks from which to choose, you’re bound to find what you need. You also can buy or sell used textbooks or download e-books — check it out at JBLMmwr.com/bookstore. JBLM libraries cater to learners of all ages. Join a monthly book discussion group or bring your youngsters to
children’s storytimes. Research a multitude of databases to check out e-books, e-Audiobooks, videos, music, e-journals, magazines, repair manuals, scholarly e-books, academic resources, newspapers, language learning, legal books, graphic novels, talking animated picture books, games and so much more. If you don’t know where to start, visit Grandstaff or McChord Library and ask for assistance. Find out more at JBLMmwr.com/libraries.
Go greener with your diet Even if you’re not a vegetarian, you’ll always benefit by adding more green to your diet. Eating salads doesn’t mean giving up on taste, however. Try our eateries and see how yummy getting more veggies can be. For instance, you can find a chicken Caesar, Southwest chicken or Cobb salads at the Bistro at Russell Landing (see more on pages 6–7) and Globemaster Grill at the Club at McChord Field. Get a burrito or fajita burrito with lettuce instead of rice at Habañero Mexican Grill, or try their taco salad. At the Zone inside the Warrior Zone, order the apple chicken salad or chopped chicken Cobb. The Strike Zone Cafés at Bowl Arena Lanes and Sounders Lanes offer taco salad and a fried or grilled chicken salad. See more salad choices at JBLMmwr.com. With all these starter ideas for going green, you can come up with many more, such as using the recycling center at JBLM, carpooling and using more JBLM services and products within walking distance. The choices to “go green” are yours to make each day — make more of an impact starting today! JBLMmwr.com

J
oint Base Lewis-McChord has long been considered a popular duty station thanks to its variety of outdoor activities for Service and Family members, especially hunters. However, just as seasons change, open training areas for hunting have also changed. “Hunting on JBLM is a great activity because it gets everyone together, military and local communities,” says David Pedroza, JBLM Skeet/Trap Shooting Complex facility manager. Before anyone born after Jan. 1, 1972, can hunt in Washington, they must attend a hunter education course. In 2015, JBLM will host three weeklong courses. The courses will be held April 13–17, May 11–15 and June 15–19. Active duty military can complete an 18

online course in lieu of attending the on-base course. JBLM strives to make the hunting experience on base safe, enjoyable and productive for participants. Every year dozens of experienced hunters, most retired Service Members, volunteer their time to help make this happen. Of roughly 60-thousand acres, many popular training areas were affected by the 2014 Federal Endangered Species Act. Off-leash dog use for pheasant hunting was affected the most when hunting areas 14, 15, 21 and 23 were made nohunt zones because the newly endangered mazama pocket gophers have been seen in these areas. The gophers are found only in Thurston and Pierce counties. To offset these changes, the JBLM Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation, Range Control, Depart-
ment of Public Works and base leadership teamed up to reopen training areas 8, 12 and 13 to hunters. Pedroza said that within the next few seasons, mobile technology will be used to help make hunting at JBLM more userfriendly. “JBLM is working on a web-based signin where people can go on their smartphone and sign into a [hunting] area,” says Pedroza. In the meantime, once JBLM hunters receive their annual permit number, they must check Range Control Area Allocation availability. If a training area is available, call the reservation number (253-967-4653) to sign in to the training area starting at 6 a.m. For more information, call the Northwest Adventure Center Information Desk at 253-967-6263 or visit JBLMmwr.com/ pdf/nw_adv/2015/hunter_education.pdf.
