Making a splash in Family & MWR aquatics With positivity & professionalism, Bruce Antonowicz keeps aquatics programs running As the days get sunnier and temperatures rise, we’ll once again see the familiar scene of lifeguards perched high on their chairs at Lewis North’s Shoreline Park. A face that Courtesy photo may not be familiar is Bruce Antonowicz, Aquatics Program manager and the man behind the scenes who keeps our pools running smoothly all year long. Being a long-term member of the JBLM Family & MWR team, Antonowicz started his career fresh out of high school in July 1991 as a summer lifeguard. He quickly progressed into a water safety instructor position. Motivated by his experience as a WSI, Antonowicz continued to take trainings and technical courses to further his aquatics career. Within three years, his hard work paid off as he was selected as a training instructor and JBLM Swim Team Coach. Today, Antonowicz oversees all indoor and outdoor pools to include Kimbro Pool, Soldier Field House Pool, McChord Outdoor Pool and, during the summer months, Shoreline beachfront. “Bruce brings a level of positivity and professionalism to a very demanding field,” says Aaron Jones, Sports Director. “His vast knowledge of his program and standards really sets him apart.” Antonowicz is a prime example of a JBLM Family & MWR employee who’s making a splash in our community daily. ‘Money Matters’ Make it Count program teaches teens important financial lessons

T

he Middle School/Teen Program at Hillside Youth Center is a great place for your teens to prep for college or a career. Teens talk about professionalism, job searching, writing résumés, interview skills and dressing for success. They learn about professionalism and talk about workplace safety. With the Money Matters: Make it Count program, “teens learn financial literacy at the very time when they most need to develop these skills,” says Dwon Jackson, manager of the HIRED and Summer Employment Program. This Boys & Girls Club of America program provides a “remarkable opportunity to provide a rich understanding of how to make wise decisions that will thoroughly impact our members’ lives,” Jackson says. Run through a partnership with BGCA, Money Matters teaches teens about financial stability, needs versus wants, budgeting, future goals and more. Topics include: • Budgeting and living within your means. • Saving and investing: put your money to work. • Planning for college: college as an investment.

• Credit and debt: protect your future. • Entrepreneurship: making it on your own. Money Matters not only teaches teens valuable financial lessons, it also opens up scholarship opportunities. BGCA members and alumni may qualify for scholarships to attend the college of their choice. Many different kinds of scholarships exist, and eligibility requirements can vary based upon a member’s cumulative GPA, SAT/ACT scores and course performance. One example of a dedicated scholarship opportunity is Schwab’s Money Matters Scholarship. BGCA members are eligible to apply for one of 10 available $1,000 scholarships and qualify for one $5,000 scholarship. Eligibility is based upon a teen’s ability to effectively communicate how participating in the Money Matters program has impacted their life, helped them gain new financial skills and assisted in planning for their future. For more information on the Money Matters program and scholarship opportunities and requirements, call Dwon Jackson at 253-967-4694/4441. contribute to military nonprofits

Service members supporting each other with AER & AFAF The Army Emergency Relief Campaign is in full swing! The campaign kick-off event was held last month, and there’s still time to participate. Each year, JBLM participates in the AER Campaign to educate Soldiers on what AER does, and give them the opportunity to contribute so AER can continue to be “Soldiers Helping Soldiers.” AER is a private nonprofit organization to relieve distress of Soldiers and their Families via financial assistance (to eligible patrons) in the form of interest-free loans and grants in support of a variety of needs. AER also provides college scholarships to military spouses and dependent children. You’re invited to participate — visit AERhq.org or call 253-967-9852 for more information. Likewise for JBLM Airmen, the Air Force Aid Society is a private nonprofit organization established to support the mission of the Air Force by relieving financial distress of Airman and their Families, assisting with educational goals and improving quality of life through proactive programs. The AFAS is one of four affiliates of the Air Force Assistance Fund. The annual AFAF Campaign, which runs within the Air Force, includes solicitation on behalf of the Society. Air Force members are encouraged to contribute through payroll deduction/allotment. This annual campaign supports the “Airmen helping Airmen” philosophy on which AFAS was founded. The campaign runs early March through mid-May each year at Air Force installations around the world. Air Force members interested in participating in this year’s campaign should contact their unit AFAF campaign managers. More information can be found at AFAS.org and

strengthen your marriage

Get a lifelong connection with ‘ScreamFree Marriage’ workshop ScreamFree Marriage class is not about screaming or yelling. This class is about teaching couples how to embrace their separate selves as a profound vehicle for strengthening a marriage. Through the bestselling “ScreamFree Parenting,” Hal Runkel showed thousands of parents how keeping their cool can revolutionize their Family life. In “ScreamFree Marriage,” Runkel shows couples how learning to stay calm in the face of common marital conflicts is the key to creating and enjoying a deep, lifelong connection. Every committed couple strives to hold on to the marriage they envisioned back when they first said “I do” — before the end of the honeymoon phase, before kids, mortgages, health crises and all life’s inescapable issues. But the truth is, conflict is unavoidable. It’s impossible for two people to see every single thing, face every issue and experience every situation in exactly the same way. What results are couples screaming at each other — sometimes literally yelling out loud, sometimes shutting themselves down and shutting their partners out and sometimes avoiding the issue altogether — none of which leads to the passionate, intimate connection we all crave. Learn radical new concepts about marriage and how to embrace this inevitable conflict as a profound vehicle for strengthening a marriage. Rather than just a source of pain and disagreement, these “Fires of Commitment,” as Runkel describes them, can actually be the exact experience needed to grow couples into new levels of maturity and intimacy. By simply learning the ScreamFree formula of “calming down, growing up and getting closer,” you can cross through these fires and end up with a closer and more passionate marriage.

Learn a whole new fresh approach to marriage Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 4, 6, 11, 13, 18 and 20 from noon–2 p.m. (bring your lunch!). Childcare coupons are available. Call 253-967-5901 or register at JBLMafcs.checkappointments.com.

Do you use a smartphone? How about social media? If so, today’s thieves, crooks and rapscallions (look it up!) are seeking ways to rip you off! A variety of scams reach people through Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms, promising to pay hundreds — even thousands — of dollars if you help them cash checks. They’ll ask for your account number so they can remotely deposit the check. They won’t tell you the check is no good, and you will ultimately be held accountable for the money they withdraw before the check bounces. There are a number of variations on this theme but all involve giving someone access to your bank account. Another rip-off is based on work-at-home jobs. Some are aimed at getting an up-front fee from you (for registration or training) for a job that doesn’t really exist. Others — and they may include an up-front fee as well — are just ways to get your personal and banking information. You could “work” for the company for a couple of weeks and then be asked for your bank account info so they can set up a direct deposit. They then access your account to steal your money! They may also use your personal information to steal your identity and open bogus credit card and loan accounts in your name. Be smart. Check things out before sharing your information! Learn more about making smart financial decisions from Financial Readiness program counselors. Schedule an appointment with an FRP counselor at JBLMfrp.checkappointments.com.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus March 2017

Patti Jeffrey

Learning about the war that changed the world JBLM libraries invite the community to attend a new book club marking the 100th year of our involvement in World War I, part of JBLM Centennial events this year by Patti Jeffrey

T

he world we know was shaped through a major world reordering — a “war to end all wars”— that shook human powers to their cores. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the U.S. involvement in World War I, plus the establishment of Camp Lewis. The American Expeditionary Forces, formed in 1917 in Europe in the midst of WWI, represents the beginnings of the 21st-century Army. Libraries and institutions across the U.S. are marking the centennial of our involvement in WWI through a number of events. JBLM libraries, along with other Army DOD libraries, are forming book clubs to discuss and remember this especially crucial time in our history. The Army Library Program has chosen a variety of fiction and nonfiction titles to read and discuss. Starting this month, McChord and Grandstaff libraries are hosting quarterly “brown bag” lunchtime meetings for the next 18 months. McChord Library technician Ashley Littleton, who runs the current book club, says, “With the new book club, we’ll be learning why we entered the war, stories about nursing the injured, about brothers-in-arms, about the effects of war on veterans, stories that give you a more comprehensive view of how battles were fought and won and how the war shaped us as a nation.” Featured books explore how WWI was

started, why Europe went to war, the draft, why the U.S. went to war, famous battles, the public’s response with food rationing and Victory Gardens, propaganda, modern warfare technology, chemical warfare, internment camps, war reporting, treaties, isolationism, the Armistice and how the war shaped countries and reordered the world. Each quarter’s featured book will be available for check-out as an e-book or as limited print books, available at the reception desk for book club participants. “People come to book clubs to learn about stories and traditions,” Littleton says. “Sometimes those traditions are baffling to the younger generation who don’t know how blessed we are by modern technology. We forget how far technology has come since WWI, even though the U.S. military had the most advanced technology of its kind back then. But Soldiers didn’t have contact with Families back home like we do now. They had to rely only on overseas letters to stay in touch with Families, and the world seemed a much bigger place. Those who fought developed special kinships that lasted throughout their lives because they had to rely on each other for survival in the trenches.” Littleton expresses hope that a variety of ages, from veterans to young spouses, will take part in the new book club. “We’re all equal here at book club,” she says, “and every person’s viewpoint is as valuable as the next. We all leave with

more understanding and appreciation than when we came in.” The WWI book club is open to all adults, including retirees and veterans. No registration is required. The book club meets at noon, so feel free to bring your lunch with you. Here’s the schedule: • “The Sleepwalkers” by Christopher Clark Tuesday, March 21 at McChord and Wednesday, March 22 at Grandstaff. • “A Sailor of Austria” by John Biggins at McChord Tuesday, May 16. • “Regeneration” by Pat Barker at McChord Tuesday Aug. 15. • “Daughters of Mars” by Thomas Keneally at Grandstaff Tuesday, Nov. 7. • “Storm of Steel” by Ernst Jünger at McChord Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2018. • “The Fall of the Ottomans: The Great War in the Middle East” by Eugene Rogan at Grandstaff Tuesday, May 8, 2018. • “Alvin York: A New Biography of the Hero of the Argonne” by Douglas V. Mastriano at McChord Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018. • “Eleventh Month, Eleventh Day, Eleventh Hour” by Joseph E. Persico at Grandstaff Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018. • “Paris 1919: Six Months That Changed the World” by Margaret MacMillan at McChord Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2018 and at Grandstaff Wednesday, Dec. 12. For more information, call Grandstaff Library at 253-967-5889 or McChord Library at 253-982-3454.

Ashley Littleton at McChord Library is leading the new WWI book club, along with Kristin Ferguson at Grandstaff Library. Featured are several book club choices. As part of her first display, Littleton is stringing 673 red poppy cut-outs together to hang in McChord Library. Each poppy represents 75,000 military and civilian lives lost during WWI. Look for more WWI-themed displays throughout the next 18 months.
