What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

JESSICA GOMEZ is a supervisory recreation assistant managing the Warrior Zone.

2

Hi, I’m Jess! To me, the focus of MWR always comes back full circle to the well-being and resiliency of our military community. My parents were both serving in the Army when I was born, and growing up with the classic Army-brat lifestyle, MWR has had a place in my life for as long as I can remember. I was a full-time student working on my BFA in graphic design when I realized why my thesis coursework seemed like such a struggle — design in a commercial capacity just wasn’t fulfilling enough. My work needed a purpose. After getting my foot in the door with an MWR marketing internship, I jumped on an entry-level marketing opportunity to use my education and skill set to give back to the community that I grew up in. It’s almost 10 years later now and I get to work with a great team of people who share the same goals; I feel privileged to deliver customer-focused programming aimed at boosting the morale of our Service members and contributing to their quality of life.

FOCUS Adventures

Jump into the world of diving By Brittany Catanzaro, guest contributor cuba diving is an exhilarating and exciting experience. Diving is a new world of exploring with new sensations that differs from the terrestrial world. With proper training, diving can be rewarding and meaningful.

S

Get certified with a five-star program The Professional Association of Diving Instructors open-water diving course, recognized worldwide, is the best choice for earning your scuba diving certification card. This course, at the Northwest Adventure Center’s Scuba Diving Center, is a great adventure that’s perfect for beginners. All scuba gear is provided, as well as the open water diving student manual. Students will make friends with similar interests during the course, which can be more fun for future dives. After earning your diving certification card, you can rent diving gear from the NAC and continue the fun of diving in Washington and all over the world.

What to expect from the diving course The week-long diving course is set up into two parts: confined water training (the pool) and open-water training/dives (the Puget Sound). The first four to five days, training is mainly in a warm pool where students will master the skills, techniques and known dangers of diving. Students will also learn how to use dive instruments and gear. The last two days of the course, students will experience diving in the Puget Sound. The dive instructors are extremely patient and excellent at teaching each student how to master all Continued on page 19.

the techniques for safe dives. They work well as a team to ensure students can perform each of the lessons correctly. Since diving is a whole new world, students will be learning: • How to put on gear properly. • Breathing underwater. • Descending and equalizing. • Hand signals underwater. • BCD oral inflation at the surface. • Giant stride entry. • Five-point descent. • Neutral buoyancy. • Clearing a fully flooded mask. • Five-point ascent. • Controlled emergency swimming ascent.

Mastering skills on openwater dives Open-water dives take place at Sunnyside Beach in Steilacoom, which is less than 20 minutes from JBLM. The location and timing is perfect with calm waters and peak high tide. The water is crystal-clear, making visibility perfect for diving. The ocean temperature is a little warmer than the air temperature during winter dives. Students will take part in four dives as deep as 30–40 feet, two each day, on the last two days of the course. Feelings of excitement and nervousness are in the air as students begin their open water diving lessons. Once they have their gear on, they’ll make sure the gear is all

together and everything is working properly by the buddycheck system. After the gear is set up and the instructor has explained the class itinerary for the day, it’s time to enter the water. Diving instructors assist with every step and lesson during the dives. They start off with a shallow dive at peak high tide to get a feel of the water. The time in the water includes a recap of the lessons learned in the pool, such as mask skills (flood and clear), regulator recovery, shared air with a buddy and other techniques. Instructors work hard to make sure students are learning properly, correctly and safely. Washington has ample bodies of water for diving, with plenty of locations, from cold-water lakes to open saltwater. For example, the Puget Sound alone is more than 100 miles long and shorelines are close to JBLM, making where we are perfect for diving — a paradise for those who love water. Call the scuba shop at 253-967-3405 for more information on scuba courses and diving rentals. With this trip list, you can plan your epic outdoor adventure trips for March! DON’T FLUSH TROUBLE! The label may say “flushable” but only flush the 3 P’s: pee, poop and toilet paper. Putting the wrong things down toilets and sinks can cause big problems! Don’t flush wipes, grease, paper towels, medications, hair, diapers, nursing pads, condoms, hygiene products or clothing down the drain!

Going green is easier than you think By Patti Jeffrey o save the planet, we’re asked to go green. But what does going green look like in our everyday lives? Well, it’s as simple as buying a pre-owned flea market item, refilling your water bottle or carpooling whenever you can. Here are tips from MWR you can adapt to your own needs.

T

Turn junk into treasure

The annual Spring Flea Market at the MWR Fest Tent attracts both sellers and buyers who love a good bargain for gently used home, yard and garden treasures.

Ken Dietiker

Create your own décor. The Arts & Crafts Center at McChord Field introduces you to a wide variety of ways to “upcycle” — make beautiful crafts and décor from everyday objects you have around your home that you might otherwise throw away. Bring your kiddos to Kids’ Kraft classes to see simple ways to turn trash into fun crafts (details on page 8). Also discover sewing, book-making, ceramics, glass mosaic and more classes by visiting JBLMmwr.com under Arts & Crafts Center or call 253-982-6721. One person’s trash is another one’s treasure at annual flea markets in the MWR Fest Tent each year. Curb your consumerism and leave room for more space and joy in your life. Clean out your closet, garage or attic, rent tables or spaces and sell your gently used items for cash! If you’re looking for inexpensive items for your home, you’re doing the planet a favor by reusing flea-market treasures. For details on April’s Spring Flea Market, see page 7.

It’s about acquiring less You never need to buy videos, videogames, books or music. JBLM libraries cater to players and learners of all ages. Come out for Family game nights, play videogames in spaces devoted to gaming, explore STEAM concepts with Family and friends, download e-books, e-audiobooks, e-music and Continued on page 25.

23

Rent your camping, water sports, hiking, outdoor party, fishing, scuba and outdoor game gear from the Northwest Adventure Center and Adventures Unlimited instead of buying it!

24

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus March 2019

e-movies! Join a monthly book discussion or bring your kiddos to storytimes at McChord Field and Lewis Main libraries. With access to 100,000 books, audiobooks, movies, TV shows, music and videogames, you’ll never need to purchase your own (or you can purchase used books at one of the seasonal used-book sales the libraries hold). Buy a used vehicle on base. What? Previously used vehicles? For sure! If you’ve worn out your own car, need to get one for your teen or need a back-up vehicle, spend some time at the POV lots at Lewis Main and McChord Field. For more information, visit JBLMmwr. com under POV Resale Lots. Here’s a bonus — get a lemon-aid check-up at the McChord Auto Center. For a small fee, the staff experts can perform a multi-point inspection on a vehicle you’re interested in purchasing. Call 253-982-7226 for details. Rent instead of buying outdoor recreational equipment. It’s all about renting and sharing what we already have, right? Instead of throwing away your cash by buying and storing all your recreational gear, see what you can find at Adventures Unlimited and the Northwest Adventure Center.

Recreation, guilt-free Save gas while you travel to adventures in the great outdoors this spring. We’ve already mentioned carpooling to work or school. There’s another way to save gas — sign up for group trips with the outdoor adventure program. Sit back and relax while your guide drives the group to go kayaking, hiking, mountain biking and whitewater rafting. Another bonus is that you get all your equipment provided along with round-trip transportation. Golf at Audubon-certified golf courses. Did you know that JBLM has two Auduboncertified golf courses? Both Eagles Pride and Whispering Firs golf courses go to great lengths to preserve the natural environment

and beauty or the surrounding areas. When you golf at either location, you can take pride in your support of going green on these environmentally friendly courses. Stay lean and green with JBLM races. Along with human-powered outdoor adventures and golfing, enjoy the many fun runs that we offer year-round! Sign up now for the Shamrockin’ 5K and Leprechaun 1K Saturday, March 16 (see details on page 13). Also coming up is the JBLM Awareness Run Saturday, April 6. For the complete schedule, go online to JBLMraces.com. Other ways to stay lean while you’re going green are to join a free fitness class (schedule on page 15), join an intramural sports team (pages 13–14), volunteer to be a youth sports coach (page 28) and swim laps indoors.

Cleaner car care Change your oil at an MWR Auto Center. Have you ever seen a neighbor doing car care in the driveway? Any used fluids, such as oil, antifreeze or lubricants, must go into hazardous waste instead of the trash can (or even worse, down the drain). All the birds, fish and wildlife in the local area are affected by these decisions every day. A simple and smart choice is to book a spot at the Auto Center at McChord Field or Lewis Main. For a small fee, you can rent a stall or lift and change the oil in a warm, dry place and have the staff safely dispose the used oil and other fluids for you. Even more, you can tap into staff members’ expertise on how to better maintain your vehicle. Call the McChord Auto Center at 253-982-7226 or the Lewis Main center at 253-967-3728 for more information.

Kindergarten, here we come! By Antoinette Walker, School Support Services liaison officer tarting kindergarten is a big step for children. They will meet new people, spend time in a classroom and learn new rules. As a parent or caregiver, you can help your child start kindergarten ready to succeed. In the early years, your child can learn so many things simply through playing, exploring and reading with you. It’s never too early to give your child a lifelong love of learning. Each child develops at his or her own pace and will have different levels of skills upon entering kindergarten. Some children may be very skilled in one area but not as skilled in another. Parents can support their children’s development by engaging them in conversations, asking them to describe what they’re doing, helping them make new friends and doing things together such as playing, cooking, painting, working with sand, running and climbing. Washington is a boundary state, which means your physical address determines the school your child will attend. The school district in which you live will determine the required age to start kindergarten. Kindergarten registration takes place at your assigned school. You’ll need the following items for registration: 1. Birth certificate. 2. Proof of residency. 3. Immunization records. 4. IEP or 504 plan (if applicable). To find important dates such as age requirement, kindergarten registration dates and the first day of school, look on the webpage of your school district (see chart below). Contact School Support Services at 253-967-7195 for additional information or questions. Our office is located at Parent Central Services, 2295 S. 12th St. (at Bitar Avenue), Lewis Main.

Transform your life with DPFR services New to parenthood? Military Families thrive with New Parent Support Program

Questions on classes and briefings? Call 253-967-7166 or visit JBLMdpfr.timetap.com. For more details, call the phone number listed or “like” us on Facebook.

JBLMdpfr

DPFR’s New Parent Support Program was designed to help military Families who are expecting or who have children younger than age four adjust to parenthood and thrive as healthy Families — no matter where the service may take them. Being a parent can be difficult. The stressors of military life, such as frequent moves to unfamiliar locations, separation from extended Family and friends and frequent deployments, can make normal parenting problems feel overwhelming. If you feel like stress is affecting how you parent or if you just feel like you need extra support, staff members at NPSP are here to provide that support. NPSP has a team of licensed social workers and community health nurses who have extensive knowledge and experience in child development and parenting. NPSP provides home visits (up to 50-mile-radius of JBLM), parenting classes (child care coupons available) and supervised play groups. The NPSP office is located at 2013 N. 3rd St. at Lewis Main. The office is open weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To enroll in NPSP, call the Family Advocacy Program information line at 253-967-5901.

Financial Readiness Program

Smart ways to keep your money working for you W

aiting for a big tax refund? Here are some tips to do the most with your refund. Think about how you’re planning to spend your tax refund. This year, instead of spending it all on luxuries or new gadgets, pay off debt with your tax refund and get a better return on your investment. A great way to use your tax refund is to pay down debt with high interest rates, such as credit card debt and personal loans. If you have several credit cards, pay off the one with the highest interest rate first, and then work your way down. Then start paying off your other loans. If you don’t have debt to pay off, consider a better savings avenue than a traditional savings account. The importance of setting up an emergency savings account is more important today than ever. With home prices still dropping, a few thousand dollars will go a long way for your down payment. Starting or adding to a house fund is always a good idea. You could also use the money for closing costs or moving expenses. If you’re staying put for a while, consider using your tax refund for home renovation projects or regular maintenance. Take a look at your withholdings and think about changing them for the next tax year. Use that money for you throughout the year, instead of giving Uncle Sam an interest-free loan. If you’re looking for ways to maximize your tax return, schedule an appointment with a Financial Counselor by calling 253-967-1453 or visit JBLMdpfr.timetap.com.
