Last month, the community bid farewell to Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base and became Joint Base Lewis-McChord. MWR sees joint basing as an opportunity for our neighboring installations to improve services and facilities available to our customers. The biggest change you’ll notice is the name change – Fort Lewis main post will now be known as JBLM-Lewis Main, North Fort will be known as JBLM-Lewis North and McChord will be JBLM-McChord Field. Rest assured that during this time of change and growth, our commitment to our customers, whether they be Army, Air Force, Navy or Marines, remains stronger than ever. We hope you enjoy visiting our facilities and events. Share your feedback with us at https://ice. disa.mil. MWR appreciates your patronage. Sincerely,

William E. Harvey

All hands on deck! Walk the plank at Kids’ Fest 2010, ‘Pirates Afloat’ Avast, me hearties!

It’s time for Kids’ Fest, “Pirate’s Afloat,” the community celebration for the Month of the Military Child. Local lads, lassies, scallywags and scurvy dogs will enjoy more than 30 free, hands-on activity booths, on-stage entertainment and military displays

Thursday, April 1 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. There will be several special guests this year – the kids from the Spring Break Performance Workshop along with Buck and Elizabeth, will perform two shows, written by the group especially for Kids’ Fest. The Parrot Lady will perform on stage, and Captain Bill and the Lost Boys Pirates will perform pirate stunts, interactive shows and more in the parking lot. “Kids – and many adults – like the romance and fantasy of pirates,” said Kate Laverents, JBLMLewis Special Events

director. “We wanted something lighthearted and fun this year, and our supporting agencies have really stepped up with some fun ideas.” Just two examples of many piraterelated fun items: “Kids can ‘walk the plank,’ and hunt for hidden treasure,” she added. Don’t be a landlubbin’ scurvy dog; come down to the new Army Family Covenant Arena (formerly Summit Arena) for Kids’ Fest. Arrgh! For more information, call 253-967-5776.

Spring Break Performance Workshop Planned during Clover Park School District’s Spring Break, the Performance Workshop is open to children ages 7 and older. Step 2 This single-leg movement is great for increasing the mobility of your hamstring and stabilizing weak ankles. This is a key movement for preventing future ankle sprains. Step one: Stand on one leg with your arms at your sides. Step two: While keeping your back flat, slowly lower your hips until your hand grazes the ground or until you touch your big toe. Be sure to keep your non-active leg close to your body. Step three: Stand back up. Start with two or three sets of eight repetitions with each leg.

How you do your laundry can save you money Save your clothes from common stains and keep them looking new longer with these ideas: Easy-to-do tips Wash and dry clothes inside out to help prevent fading. Use the cold or warm settings to save money. Occasionally run the machine on the normal cycle with hot water and a gallon of white vinegar to clean it. Clean the lint filter after each use, and wash it once a week with soap and water. Removing stains Oil - rub white chalk into the stain before laundering Perspiration – Mix a solution of 4 tablespoons of salt in 2 cups of hot water and rub on stains until they disappear. Blood – Fresh, use cold water; dried: use hydrogen peroxide. Red (Kool-Aid) – Pour rubbing alcohol on the stain before washing. Wine, coffee and fruit – Pour club soda and salt on stain, or soak in milk for 30 minutes before washing.

Grass – Combine a few drops of ammonia with 1 teaspoon hydrogen peroxide. Rub into stain; rinse immediately when stain disappears. Chocolate – Use baby shampoo on a toothbrush and gently rub on the stain (dialcorp.com or armhammer.com) Brightening clothes • To brighten dark clothes, use cold water with a half-cup of salt. • A half-cup of baking soda added to a full load of washing will help brighten your wash and remove odors. Softening clothes • Cut dryer sheets in half before using; they’ll still be effective and the box will last twice as long. • Add a quarter-cup white distilled vinegar to the last rinse. Vinegar removes soap, yellowing and acts as a fabric softener, reducing static cling. Contributed by Ryki Carlson, Army Community Service; richarda.carlson@us.army.mil

Feedback

It’s been quite the journey for an Afghan mountain dog who befriended an American Soldier in a time of war. That’s all behind her now – Oso has made it to the land of the free. Now all she needs is her brave best friend, the Soldier who took her in, for the reunion to be complete. While on deployment to Afghanistan, Spec. Phil Bourrillion rescued Oso from a trash pit as a five-week-old puppy. The bond that formed between Oso and the unit was a strong one. When the unit got orders to transfer to another base, plans to bring Oso along were nixed by the Army. That’s when Bourrillion’s wife, Lena, set out on a crusade to rescue Oso. Through the help of your donations and various charitable organizations, such as Nowzad Dogs and Animal Rescue Families, the money was raised to get Oso home. A driver retrieved Oso from the base and drove her several hundred miles through enemy lines to a safe house. Once there, Oso stayed with her foster family until she was able to receive vaccines and other care needed for her flight to the U.S. Oso boarded a plane bound for New York, traveled 56 hours in a crate over the course of three days

and on Feb. 9, she arrived at SeaTac Airport to a crowd of people waiting to greet her with open arms. Also on hand to welcome Oso was a member of Bourrillion’s unit home for R&R. “She was a big boost to morale when we had her,” Spec. David LeForge told KOMO News. The good news traveled back to where Oso’s life began. “You could hear the smile in Phil’s voice and he sighed and said, ‘I don’t have to worry anymore, she’s home safe.’” Lena relayed. Efforts raised more than $5,000 dollars. Since last month’s publication, Animal Rescue Families in Bremerton, Wash., agreed to pay the costs associated with Oso’s trip to the U.S. Any money previously raised was donated to Nowzad Dogs to assist in rescuing other dogs in Afghanistan. The Bourrillions have vowed to pay it forward by helping other dogs get home to their Soldiers. They have changed the name of Oso’s Facebook page to OSO: Operation Save Others. Pasado’s Safe Haven in Sultan, Wash., paid for Oso’s flight from New York to Seattle and is providing all her vet care for free. Oso will spend three weeks under observation, where she has her very own cabin and caretakers. Once a clean bill of health
