Applaud military spouses, celebrate Armed Forces Day Military spouses at JBLM and around the world contribute to the mission by keeping the homefront happy and healthy. With their never-ending support, love and encouragement, their Service Members answer the nation’s call to duty. The job of a military spouse can be rewarding, but it’s not without sacrifice. In recognition of that, we’re celebrating military spouses with specials, deals and activities for Military Spouse Appreciation Week. Read all about it on page 18 of the Family & the homefront section. In further celebration, Saturday, May 17 is Armed Forces Day. The annual festival includes military displays, entertainment, food and fun. The details are on page 9 of the Food & fun section. We hope to see you there! May’s also a great time to get out on the golf course (page 11) and welcome summer. Kick off the first day of summer swimming season with the Beach Bash at Shoreline Park (page 30), and put a trip to McChord Outdoor Pool on your to-do list (page 11). We’re excited to bring you these great events and ready to hear from you. After you attend, please take a few minutes to share your comments and suggestions at http://ice.disa.mil.

enactments and more. You and your Families will hear deejay music, see roving entertainers, get to climb a rock wall, visit a petting zoo, play on inflatables, play-fight with foam swords, play the junk chimes, roam among the many food and craft vendors and get aboard carnival rides. The inflatables, carnival rides and food are available for purchase; other displays and entertainment are free.
While President Harry Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their service, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson established the first Armed Forces Day in 1949. Each year at JBLM, Armed Forces Day is incredibly fun, informative, entertaining and reflective. It draws veterans, children, different branches of military members and the public together to remind us of our strong and resilient Service Members and their Families, both past and present. This year is no different! JBLM will open its gates to the public on Saturday, May 17 to experience a variety of attractions.
Participate in or watch sports activities If you’re into Volksmarches or just like to explore the grounds of Lewis Main, join the 5K or 10K Volksmarch that begins at 9 a.m. Believe it or not, you can bring your bike for a Volksbike instead if you prefer not to walk. Visit JBLMArmedForcesDay.com and scroll to the map to see where to register for the Volksmarch. At 10 a.m. at Cowan Stadium, watch the JBLM Championship Soccer Game and at 1 p.m., cheer
The day includes something for everyone The event line-up features the attractions and displays at Cowan and Memorial stadiums at Lewis Main from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. They include more than 15 living history groups ranging from the Greeks to the Revolutionary War to World War II, presentday military static and vehicle displays, historical military re-
on the Army vs. Navy Rugby match.
Wait, there’s more!

Visitors of all ages came last year to see and enjoy military displays, such as the WWII motorcycle with sidecar, re-enactments with period-costumed actors and period encampments with demonstrations from each group, including mock Civil War battles and cannon fire.
Post or tweet how you support the troops and include #AFD14 to get a chance to win a ride in a Stryker! To see a video and photos, plus the schedule of events, list of static displays and a locational map, visit JBLMArmedForcesDay.com. JBLMmwr.com

BOOKS & BEYOND AT JBLM LIBRARIES
What’s better than a walk with a friend? A StoryWalk® with a friend!
StoryWalk® is an innovative and delightful way for children — and adults! — to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time. Laminated pages from a children's book are attached to wooden stakes, which are installed along an outdoor path. As you stroll down the trail, you're directed to the next page in the story. StoryWalks® have been installed in 45 states and four countries, Germany, Canada, England and Bermuda. They are always received with appreciation. — KelloggHubbard.org/storywalk
