omewhere amid the crowded stadiums and streets, a cannon blast splits the air. Several heads turn to glimpse a waft of smoke rising from the field of military re-enactors. The mock battle has just begun.

Opposite the battlefield, seats of hilariously screaming youngsters rotate overhead and through the air at dizzying speeds. Below them, savory smells of sizzling, juicy burgers, hot dogs and other favorites lure customers to line up at fair-food trailers. The variety of sights, sounds and smells tugs at our emotions at the annual Armed Forces Day at JBLM — this year falling on Saturday, May 16. Military buffs look forward to learning about wartime artifacts, reveling in camaraderie, sharing stories and teaching their young-

sters about living history. Families gather to entertain the kiddos, visit with friends, enjoy the day and celebrate their place in the military community. Veterans of wars and conflicts visit to reminisce, honor their comrades and perhaps share parts of their stories, still fresh in their minds. All are there to honor our Service Members who continue to carry on the legacy and promise of our hard-won freedoms.

What is Armed Forces Day? Back in 1949, the separate branches of our military were unified under one entity— the newly established Department of Defense. A single-day observance of all five military branches was announced by the Secretary of Defense. We celebrate Armed Forces Day to thank our military members for their service to our country. In an excerpt from the Presidential Proclamation of Feb. 27, 1950, President Harry S. Truman stated: “Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks

the first combined demonstration by America’s defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, towards the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first parade of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea and air defense.” It’s still true today.

JBLM continues annual tradition JBLM hosts its celebration yearly, drawing around 20,000–30,000 participants from around the region. What makes our celebration so special? The first thing you’ll notice at Memorial Stadium are all the living history groups ranging from the Greeks to the Revolutionary War to World War II. Bernie Bateman, who served 24 years in the Army, is Historic Fort Steilacoom Historical Association’s director and commander of the Civil War re-enactors. He says, “I take every chance to be with Soldiers that I can. What I want everyone

Fishing in the spring, summer and fall

Washington has it all

By Bruce Bolding, Warmwater Fish Program Manager, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife

W

hether you’re new to Washington or have been here for years, there are probably lots of fishing opportunities you haven’t tried or might not even know about. We have some of the best and most diverse fishing opportunities anywhere, and almost all are within an easy drive from JBLM. If you prefer lake fishing, it doesn’t get any more convenient than American Lake (1,125 acres), which borders the western edge of JBLM. It contains rainbow trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass, yellow perch and kokanee. There are more than 4,000 other lowland lakes throughout the state that also contain

various combinations of the 16 game fish species that we manage, including black and white crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, brown, black and yellow bullhead, tiger muskie and walleye. If you like to combine fishing with hiking in the mountains, Washington has about 2,700 “high lakes” in the Cascades and Olympic Mountains, many of which are stocked with trout or have self-sustaining trout populations. Getting to the lakes can be as easy as a half-hour walk or as challenging as a marathon. The scenery, solitude and experience are amazing. JBLM is about one mile from the marine waters of Puget Sound and about 90 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Popular saltwater options include: salmon, lingcod, halibut, dogfish shark, clams, oysters, crab and razor clams (on the coast). 2015 is a “pink salmon year.” This species returns to Puget Sound only every other year and provides tremendous opportunities. Nearly 1 million “pinks”

are predicted to enter the Nisqually River alone, which is just south of JBLM. For more information on how to fish and what to fish for, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is holding several free how-to fishing clinics on Saturdays at the Northwest Adventure Center. The WDFW is also sponsoring a seminar series weekday evenings at JBLM from April to October on everything from bass, panfish and salmon fishing to crabbing and clamming. Get class notifications at fb.com/SeeYouOutsideJBLM. Fishing licenses and gear can be purchased at the NAC. The NAC also rents boats and other equipment. To search for fishing opportunities in Puget Sound and across the state in freshwater, go to “Fish Washington,” the searchable database at wdfw.wa.gov/ fishing/washington. For any other questions or comments, email Bruce.Bolding@dfw.wa.gov or call 360-902-8417. JBLMmwr.com

JBLM teen Daniela Suarez named Washington Military Youth of the Year Daniela Suarez set to receive college scholarship and vie for regional title this summer

H

ailing from JBLM’s McChord Youth Center, Daniela Suarez has been named the Washington Military Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of America for her leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle. The Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle. The program honors our nation’s most aweinspiring young people on their path to great futures and encourages all kids to lead, succeed and inspire. As the new teen representative and one of four military youth finalists competing for the honor, Suarez will represent all members of BGCA-affiliated youth centers in Washington and receive a $5,000 college scholarship. Suarez emphasizes the importance of

belonging, and though her Youth of the Year journey began last fall, her Boys & Girls Club story began four years ago, at McChord Youth Center, a place where the staff and youth became her second family. Suarez speaks of how she’s positively impacted by programs like SMART Girls, a health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program for girls, and Keystone Club, a teen group dedicated to leadership and community service. For her Keystone Adviser, Joycelyn Key, Suarez is not only a positive mentor for the younger members in SMART Girls, she’s also a positive role model by always lending a hand to staff and encouraging others with her positive demeanor. “Daniela and all Youth of the Year nominees are living proof that Boys & Girls Clubs across the country are fulfilling our mission of inspiring and enabling young people to achieve great futures,”

says Jim Clark, president and CEO, BGCA. “Being named Youth of the Year is a lifelong honor.” This summer, Suarez will compete against other Boys & Girls Club members within the Pacific Region. If named regional winner, she’ll be awarded an additional $10,000 college scholarship, renewable for four years up to $40,000. Six youth, including five regional winners and the military youth winner, will advance to Washington, D.C., in September, to compete for the title of BGCA’s National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year will receive an additional $25,000 scholarship, renewable each year up to $100,000 and will have the opportunity to meet with the President of the United States in the White House. For more information about the Youth of the Year program, visit bgca.org/yoy. — BGCA Washington press release

Kick Butts Day takes the fight to smoking at Teen Zone

tatistics show that smoking in the United States has steadily declined in recent years; however, according to information provided by the Kick Butts Day organization, in conjunction with the Campaign For Tobacco-Free Kids, at least 2,800 kids try their first cigarette each day. More than 540 million packs of cigarettes are consumed by children each year. To help illustrate the hazards of smoking, the Hillside Youth Center-Teen Zone held a Kick Butts Day event in March. “We hope that the attendees see the danger in smoking and make the choice to not smoke or even try it. It is always easy to say ‘Don't smoke,’ but you have to provide them with resources and facts as well as statistics to really grasp the concept that smoking is indeed dangerous,” says Jennifer Gilyard, a child and youth program assistant at the center. Gilyard says the event featured heavy involvement from the teens attending the center. They organized the performance sections of the event, including an origi26
