What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

We love all the free library events, like Pirate Day at McChord library. Ashley Gayle MWR gives my kids a chance to be around other active duty Families and their kids. Great bonding time and great to meet other people in similar situations. Karen Dockett Family support, answers and fun! Taylor Alies Clark MWR gives active duty Service members and their Families an outlet to relieve the daily stressors they endure, both abroad and stateside. MWR is vital to the overall mission in supporting peace of mind. Leonard Keatts We love all the things we get to do together as a Family. Jeannie Clark-Onikama MWR means normalcy and gratitude. When most Families live regular lives without thinking about the library, bowling and Family fun activities. MWR brings that part of life back to the military. Lifelong, lasting moments that will last forever. Each Family never knows when the Service member will leave. The military and its Families are forever grateful for giving normalcy out of chaos. We appreciate everything you do for our unnoticed sacrifices. With a match made for one another and the gratitude that’s not shown enough to MWR. Thank you. Brian Moore MWR provides fun, safe and diverse activities and information to help assist our military Families at the current duty station. Tiffany Hart It means memories for my Family! Rachel Goff Free or money-saving adventures and I really like the Facebook information blasts. Chelle Brandon MWR means Family and support — everyone supports everyone and it seems like we are a huge Family by the way we care and help each other. Isabella Saunders

Celebrate Armed Forces Day with us T

he variety of sights, sounds and smells tugs at our emotions at the annual Armed Forces Day at JBLM, which is being celebrated Saturday, May 18 this year. Military buffs look forward to learning about wartime artifacts, reveling in camaraderie, sharing stories and teaching their youngsters about living history. Families gather to entertain the kiddos, visit with friends, enjoy the day and celebrate their place in the military community. Veterans of wars and conflicts visit to reminisce, honor their comrades and perhaps share parts of their stories, still fresh in their minds. All are there to honor our Service members who continue to carry on the legacy and promise of our hard-won freedoms.

22

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus May 2019

What is Armed Forces Day? Back in 1949, the separate branches of our military were unified under one entity— the newly established Department of Defense. A single-day observance of all five military branches was announced by the Secretary of Defense. We celebrate Armed Forces Day to thank our military members for their service to our country. In an excerpt from the Presidential Proclamation of Feb. 27, 1950, President Harry S. Truman stated: “Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined demonstration by America’s defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, towards the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first parade of prepared-

ness by the unified forces of our land, sea and air defense.” It’s still true today.

JBLM continues annual tradition Enjoy activities for all ages at JBLM’s Armed Forces Day open to the public from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The general public must use the DuPont gate and will be shuttled to Cowan and Memorial stadiums. Valid ID cardholders can use the other gates. Admission, parking, military displays, historical reenactments, entertainment and athletic events are free. Carnival rides, food and other vendor products are available for purchase. For complete information, schedule of events, directions and a map, visit JBLMArmedForcesDay.com.

Explore static military aircraft and vehicle displays, including infantry carrying vehicles, weapons displays and explosive ordnance disposal equipment. Meet with historians from the Lewis Army Museum. See living history encampments representing military life in the past, including Army Group 1944, Friends of Kilroy, Northwest Historians, Fort Steilacoom, Tacoma Scots, WA Civil War Association, 4th U.S. Infantry Regiment Company C and more. Witness mock battles and demonstrations and ask questions to learn more about bygone eras of military field life. Look for roving entertainers throughout the day. “Blitz,” the Seahawks’ mascot, is scheduled to make an appearance for photo ops from 1 to 4 p.m. Payne Fifield will amaze you with his Hogwarts wizard magic trick show. See Bill Robison’s strolling puppet show, laugh at the antics of physical comic and juggler Henrik Bothe, get wowed by the strolling magic of Jeff Evans, receive free balloon creations from friendly balloon twisters Teri Rogers and Megan McKenna, and pose for caricaturists Vincent Yee and Patrick Ward, who will capture your personality with a quick-draw portrait. You won’t miss stilt walker Leapin’ Louie, entertaining you from the heights! JBLM’s own America’s First Corps Band will entertain you on stage with popular tunes throughout the day. If you enjoy watching sports, be sure to catch the friendly competition at Cowan Stadium when the Army vs. Navy rugby match begins. (The Army team has taken possession of the coveted match trophy with 17 wins in the past 20 years of competition!) The teams will line up for the playing of the national anthem at 10:55 a.m.; the match starts at noon.

Climbing up in the world’s a blast By Brittany Catanzaro ave you ever wondered what it’s like to go on a rock-climbing trip with the expert guides from JBLM’s Outdoor Recreation program? I had an opportunity to learn hands-on basic alpine climbing skills and techniques on a recent snow camping weekend in Mount Rainier National Park. I experienced an amazing weekend with perfect weather and awesome people. During the trip, I got to meet others who are interested in the same fun that I’m into — a great bonding experience. This field trip was mainly about learning iceaxe arrest, snow camping and glacier travel practice. Alpine climbing instructors Scott Schissel and Shawn Raybell brought 10 of us on this trip. We worked together in teams of three or four but also worked together as a whole. Two other girls, Stephanie Duncan and Kimberly Collins, were in my group as a rope team and tent mates.

H

First day setup & practice On the first day, we snowshoed with all our gear to our campsite. The sunny weather made the views perfect. We all worked efficiently together to set up camp. Everyone remained

level-headed and more than willing to help each other out, especially during camp setup and preparing cooked meals. Some of us set up the group kitchen by digging a snow table and snow benches, while others dug out a community bathroom. Shawn Raybell brought his tepee tent to place over the group kitchen to keep us warm while we ate dinner. After setting up camp, we snowshoed up to an area with a steep slope to practice ice-axe arrest. As we ascended, we practiced snowshoeing techniques — step-kicking, proper switchbacking and the French technique. When we arrived to our location, we began practicing ice axe arrest. This was an exhilarating exercise to learn! If a climber falls, there are techniques to stop a fall as quickly as possible. Self-arrest with ice axe is the best technique. However, there are many ways one can fall downhill, so we practiced all of them — head uphill, face-down/head uphill, on your back/ head downhill, face down/head downhill and on your back. After practicing, we headed back down Continued on next page.

25

to camp for a snack while learning how to descend fresh snow by using the heel-step technique. Next, we roped up with our team with appropriate gear and assimilated climbing techniques on a nearby trail. We were getting the feel of climbing with a rope team and learning to move together on snow while using running belays. The sun was setting by this time, and the views were gorgeous. We finished the day with eating dinner together in the tepee-tent group kitchen — all laughing and talking about what a fun day we had.

Second day honing skills techniques On the second day, we woke up before sunrise, ate a snack, roped up in our teams and each geared up with an ice axe, crampons, headlamp, helmet, harness and pack. We practiced rope team management — adjusting pace, proper switchbacking and communication. We also practiced using crampon techniques (combination/American, French and German techniques). Scott led us to an area that was perfect for watching a breathtaking sunrise. In front of us, the sun turned Mount Rainier into an orange hue, and the orange sky backlit the Tatoosh Mountain Range behind us. We headed back

26

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus May 2019

to camp and enjoyed a warm breakfast. We finished the trip with the last parts of our training by practicing crevasse rescue with a Z-pulley and C-pulley, anchor setups and snow bollard setup.

Becoming a mountaineering woman The women of the group had a blast during the trip. If you’re a woman who would love to join in an epic experience like this, don’t let intimidation stop you. This is a wonderful and exciting experience for everyone. During the drive back to base, I spoke with Stephanie and Kimberly about their thoughts on the trip. Stephanie enjoyed the camp setup: “Setting up camp from start to finish was one of my favorite parts because I’ve never really done it before. Now I have the skills to do it again. I learned with both ODR gear and my own gear. Using ODR gear gave me the opportunity to try gear out before investing, while seeing and feeling what quality gear is. It’s also nice that ODR sells much of the same gear.” Kimberly loved practicing the ice axe arrest portion of the trip: “Learning ice axe arrest was dynamic, practical and fun. I felt challenged and safe in the ice axe arrest portions because it was made as safe as possible. I felt challenged in the crevasse rescue portions

as there are different ways of completing that objective safely. We had a lot of critical thinking mixed with an orderly set of procedures to safely secure the rest of the rope team and the fallen climber.” Special thanks to instructors Scott and Shawn, who were patient, extremely helpful and fun. Future leaders are created in JBLM youth programs H

illside Youth Center/Teen Zone is proud to present Christian Ashford as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Washington State’s Military Youth of the Year award winner. Christian says, “Resilience is defined as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. As a military teen, life is filled with constant PSC moves, changing schools, gaining and losing friends, missing loved ones, and even the loss of loved ones. Understanding resilience taught me that I can overcome every obstacle in life with the support of my faith, Family and community. “Hillside Youth Center provides comprehensive community support for all military youth who enter the doors. I’m more resilient because of my experiences at Hillside.” Volunteering at the youth center positioned Christian to serve in key leadership positions that allowed him to give back what had been invested in him. He believes being a part the youth center is one of the best decisions he made as a military teen. Christian received a $5,000 scholarship, along with a laptop computer. He’s now going on to the regional-level competition.

How Youth of the Year is chosen The Youth of the Year program is designed to promote and recognize service to the club and community, academic performance and contributions to Family. Military youth at JBLM can work toward applying for Military Youth of the Year. Youth in grades 6–12 must be a member for at least one year at Hillside Youth Center/Teen Zone, affiliated with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. (Parents can sign up their youth for free at Parent Central Services or at Hillside.) Hillside structures programs that involve leadership clubs, Career Launch, SMART Girls, Passport to Manhood, fine arts and many more fun activities. Qualifying youth need to be involved in club programs and activities that provide them with peer-to-peer social and leadership skills. For more information on youth programs and activities or how to join, call Hillside at 253-967-4441.
