other’s Day wasn’t meant to be sentimental — it was originally meant just to give mothers the recognition and honor they so deserved. It has become not only about sentiment but much more through the decades, especially now that many moms are deployed, single working parents, raising Families while their spouse is deployed, stay-at-home moms or juggling the demands of work, a spouse and Family.
You can order a photo pillow or photo nightlight from your Arts & Crafts Centers with your mom’s favorite people pictured on them. These make especially great gifts to send to deployed moms — and dads, too!

This year, Mother’s Day is being celebrated Sunday, May 13. Do you know what you’re doing to celebrate? If not, here are some ideas from Family & MWR. Your Arts & Crafts Centers have dreamed up some gift-giving ideas for your mom: • Sign up right away for a special children’s gift-making workshop Friday, May 11 from 3–5 p.m. at the McChord Arts & Crafts Center. Registered children ages 8 and older will make a special Mother’s Day gift for $10 per child in the woodshop. We can’t give away what it is, but when you call to register, you can ask — remember to keep it a secret from Mom! Registration is limited to 12 students. Children must be accompanied by a supervising adult. To register, call 253-982-6726 Tuesday–Saturday. • From May 1–12, order custom matting and framing and receive a free name laser engraved on the mat. • Send your deployed mom a keepsake photo pillow with her favorite photo or a new photo of the Family. • Give her a photo nightlight that lights up the dark with a picture of you! Call your Arts & Crafts Centers for even more unique gift ideas for Mom. Call 253-967-5001 (Lewis Main) or 253-982-6726 (McChord Field).
The Northwest Adventure Center is planning several May trips that just might be that unforgettable memory you’ve been waiting to find. Sign up now for a trip to Leavenworth’s Maifest or whitewater rafting on Mother’s Day. There’s even a horseback-riding trip the day before. Register with WebTrac at JBLMmwr.com. For more trips, see pages 20–23. Eating out’s always a sure bet for celebrating Mother’s Day. Take Mom out to an annual favorite — Mother’s Day Brunch at the McChord Club. She’ll get to choose her breakfast and lunch favorites, plus a choice of beverages. For seating reservations and prices, call 253-982-5581. Another great way to say “I love you” is Mother’s Day Brunch on the spacious patio overlooking American Lake at the Bistro at Russell Landing. You don’t need to make reservations; walk-ins can come in anytime from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. For pricing details, call the Bistro at 253-964-2813. For a relaxing new hobby, think about giving Mom golf lessons at a JBLM golf course. Whispering Firs Golf Course at McChord Field offers either $99 beginner group lessons or individual lessons with their resident LPGA Life Master pro. Call 253-982-4927 for details. Eagles Pride Golf Course at Lewis offers individual golf lessons with their pros, as well. Call 253-967-6522 for more information. If Mom’s already a golfer, take advantage of Whispering Firs’ Mother’s Day special Sunday, May 13. Moms receive

free greens fees, and moms with advanced greens fees receive a free power cart rental. Hope you can use one or more of these ideas to make this Mother’s Day especially happy!
Turn something ordinary into a gift If you’re into celebrating Mother’s Day, then you need the secret to making Mom happy. It’s an easy formula: Simply combine something ordinary with something extraordinary. For instance, do something for her that she typically does for everyone else, such as washing the dishes and putting them away, or vacuuming and dusting the entire house or making all the beds — you get the idea. Then, surprise her with a day out of the ordinary. She’ll know she can leave without worry or fuss about what’s not done — since you’ve already taken care of those things!

Forces Day Q&A
with Billy Russo of the Everett Reign
What prompted you to get involved with the JBLM Armed Forces Day celebration?
We originally wanted to do a scrimmage game with the Tacoma Trauma, and they suggested playing on Armed Forces Day since they have some players who are in the military. We thought, “What would be better than being able to celebrate with the men and women of the Armed Forces by playing a football game?” What got you started in the sport?
I got involved with women’s football in 2007 with the Seattle Majestics. Once I saw the excitement it brought to the women, I wanted to coach it more. I love the challenge. I’ve always been the type of coach who believes that it doesn’t matter if it’s a man or a woman who plays sports. I’m here to coach. It’s my passion. What’s a common trait you see in your players and what’s needed in a woman to succeed in football?
The most common thing I’ve noticed with the women who are
Photos from left to right: Eric Haines will impress with his juggling and comedy show. Check out military displays and demonstrations. Kids will be amazed by stilt dancer Janet Rayor’s height. The celebration draws thousands each year. We hope to see you there! CC Clowning’s guaranteed to make you laugh.
involved with this sport is that they have heart. You have to have a different mindset when you play football. If you have the “3 Ds,” desire, determination and dedication, then you can do most anything. What should a spouse or adult Family member do if they’re interested in getting involved?
We love it when a spouse or Family member wants to get involved. It shows they support the women in this game. We already have a few spouses and/or Family members getting involved with our team in some sort of capacity. When we have a player tell us they have someone who wants to help out, we simply get in touch with them and see how they would like to be involved. We try to get them involved in one way or another, whether it’s at a practice, event or on game day. It shows that we are not only about football but about being Family. That’s what a football team is at the end of the day — one big Family. See more from Coach Russo and information about many of the Armed Forces Day entertainers in the May 18 Northwest Guardian.

Affordable, quality & convenient services for you
Find child care near your home with Army Child Care in Your Neighborhood, F By Kimberly Rowe
If you’re looking for a childcare option close to home and you live off the installation in Pierce or Thurston counties, Army Child Care in Your Neighborhood may be the answer for your Family. ACCYN partners with local child care providers, both in centers and homes, and ensures they maintain the quality one would expect from on-base child development centers. The program started at JBLM six years ago as a pilot to assist Families with their childcare needs. “There was excess demand for childcare at the time,” says Courtney Turnley, ACCYN community based manager. The program allows Families to have care close to base while they’re on the waiting list for on-base care and also serves as a viable option for Families who choose off-base care, she continues. Turnley is responsible for recruiting partners — there are currently six centers and 10 homes in Pierce County
and five centers and three homes in Thurston County — and ensuring they maintain quality standards. Families can rest assured the ACCYN homes and centers are not only highquality options but affordable as well. Turnley checks in on the locations unannounced three times per year in the beginning phases of working toward accreditation (the same high accreditation standards you see in CDCs at JBLM). It takes two years to get accredited, and ACCYN locations keep portfolios and work with the community-based manager toward that goal. Locations are checked on unannounced at least quarterly while in the self-study phase or after receiving accreditation. As far as cost goes, you may initially see high out-of-pocket expenses, but it all depends on how quickly you submit (and have approved) your fee assistance paperwork to the National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies. Once the paperwork
is approved — “We can help with the process,” says Turnley. It’s online and requires an LES, birth certificate, spouse LES or school schedule, and “there must be a need for more than 16 hours* of care per week ...” — the cost for ACCYN is pretty close to on-base costs. NACCRRA pays the difference directly to the ACCYN provider. Additionally, providers receive quality-improvement funds. “We work with the providers to help them decide how to spend their quality-improvement funds,” Turnley says. “Any money spent must be used to obtain or maintain accreditation.” For more information or for an ACCYN referral, call 253-477-4179 or visit JBLMmwr.com. * If you need less than 16 hours of care
per week, use on-base hourly care. Hourly care is provided at centers at JBLM, and children must be registered with CYSS. Call 253-966-CYSS for registration requirements and information on making reservations.

Minerva Hohaia
Celebrate 20 years of Triple Threats with a swim, bike ride and run! The folks at Sports, Fitness and Aquatics are feverishly working to make this year’s Triple Threat Triathlon Series — the 20th annual series at JBLM — special. While the details aren’t public yet, what you can count on is a great race. The triathlon series consists of a half-mile swim (or a 250-meter swim, you choose), a 15-mile bike and a 3-mile run, one right after the other. You can do it as an individual elite athlete, an age group athlete or a relay team. You may have thought that everyone wants to race as a relay team (where each member does one
leg of the race), but more individuals do the entire race all by themselves. If you haven’t started training already, get started. The swim section is the hardest, especially if you’re not a swimmer. “That’s why we added the 250-meter swim,” says Minerva Hohaia, Triple Threat Triathlon Series coordinator. Get swimming, then work on logging some mileage on your bike and in your running shoes. Don’t be a weekend warrior and try to do the race without any training. The Triple Threat Triathlon Series will be at Shoreline Park on American Lake Saturdays, June 16, July 21 and Aug. 18 at 9 a.m. There will be door prizes, plus awards for the top three finishers in each age group.

THESE FREE RESOURCES ARE AT YOUR FINGERTIPS By Lynn Larson, RN, MA
I am continually amazed at all the resources available with a push of a button. What I find difficult is finding these resources among the maze of apps, websites and videos. Here are some of my favorites: PHONE APPS Fooducate is a free app for iPhones and Androids. I believe this app has had the biggest impact in improving my overall health. You simply scan or enter a food item into the database to get the pros and cons. It also provides links for further information about the processing of foods. The best part of this app is the “alternative” button. When you click on “alternatives,” it brings up similar food items that have higher overall nutritional values. You can also request daily emails. Fast Food Calorie Lookup is another free app that can be a diet lifesaver. You can easily bring up any fast food outlet and scroll through menus for caloric value. Myfitnesspal not only allows you to keep an accurate food journal, but you can click on your daily nutritional intake and assess your vitamin and mineral intake. I find keeping a food journal is the best way for me to lose weight. With this app, I have the benefit of checking if I’m getting enough calcium, potassium or other vital nutrients. WEBSITES Fooducate.com for those without a smartphone; see description above. Whfoods.com is the best site I have found for healthy, easy-to-prepare recipes. Use the “recipe assistant” to find recipes based on items you like and nutritional needs you may have, such as increasing iron or calcium intake. You can also specify items to leave out of recipes. The recipe assistant customizes the recipes to your specific requests. I’ve found them to be easy, very healthy and delicious! Fitday.com is a free website where you can keep a food journal and check on your daily nutritional intake to ensure getting the proper vitamins and minerals. MOVIES I’m sure we’ve all seen or heard about the “gross” food movies, but I always recommend seeing inspiring movies. My two favorite foodie movies are “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead” and “Forks over Knives.” Both are medically sound and supported by both physicians and nutritionists. They’re focused on a plant-based diet and avoiding heavily refined processed foods. I recommend viewing the movies with the intention of simply adding more fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains to your diet. I suggest trying one or two new plant-based recipes to your family’s diet each month. It really is easier than you think! Plus, since I’ve gone plant-based, I’ve lost weight and saved approximately 30–50 percent on my food bill! I hope you enjoy checking out the above resources. If you want more help in getting fit, losing weight and improving your health, call 253-966-3757 for a MicroFit analysis. We’ll do a complete evaluation of your current physical fitness, have weekly weigh-ins and blood pressure clinics and set you up with a free fitness trainer. Mention does not imply federal endorsement.

Do you know your credit score? You should — it drives the interest rates on loans, mortgages and credit cards.
W
hile a lot of people don’t understand why their credit score goes up and down or even what it means, it’s understood that credit scores drive the interest rates charged on loans, mortgages and credit cards. Your credit score is a snapshot of the information in your credit reports at any given time and can change as the information changes. The number is derived from several factors, including the length of credit history, payment history, the types of accounts, new credit and amounts owed. Each factor is given a different consideration in determining the score. A recently missed payment, for example, will carry more weight — and lower a score faster — than opening a new account. Not only do scores drive interest rates you may be charged for credit, but they help in determining if you’ll get a loan, 28
how much you may be required to pay for insurance premiums and if you’ll get hired for (or be able to keep) a job. Another thing to remember is that not all credit reports report the same accounts and not all scores are the same. To throw another wrench in the works, there are several different scoring models used to determine those numbers. The most widely-known scoring model is the FICO ® score, but in recent years the big three credit bureaus — Experian, Equifax and Trans Union — have developed their own model. For more information on the factors involved in computing your credit score, visit vantagescore.experian.com or myfico.com (and click on “What’s in your FICO ® score”). For assistance in obtaining, reading or correcting information in your credit report, schedule an appointment with the Financial Readiness Program — call 253-967-1453 (Army Community Service) or 253-982-2695 (Airman & Family Readiness Center).
Q: Where can I go to pull my credit score for free?
A:
While consumers are entitled by law to a free credit report from the major three credit bureaus every year, at annualcreditreport.com, the credit scores are not free. There are a handful of online companies that provide a glimpse of your credit scores free of charge. The JBLM Financial Readiness Program Specialists at Army Community Service and the Airman & Family Readiness Center can also assist with obtaining a free credit score from MyFico®. See numbers above to schedule your appointment today.
