andy Mulder, manager and chef at the Bistro at Russell Landing, applied for “Guy’s Grocery Games” on Food Network and got accepted! We’re celebrating with a TV viewing party Sunday, Nov. 9 starting at 7 p.m. at Eagles Pride Golf Course’s Caddy Shack Bar & Grill, located off I-5 Exit 116. The show airs from 8–9 p.m. Mulder says, “My main goal was to show that chefs on military bases aren’t putting out the traditional ‘slop’ that so many used to accept. I believe I represented myself, the Bistro and JBLM well.” Guy Fieri hosts this hit supermarketthemed culinary competition. Four chefs get their basters ready for this Thanksgiving-focused episode. which they must incorporate into their inventive fall dishes. Get ready for a touchdown in Red Light Special, as the chefs make game-day bites incorporating frozen cranberries. Then, making an upscale Thanksgiving dinner becomes even more of a challenge in Five Ingredients or Less. Only one of these chefs will be able to gobble up to $20,000 in the Shopping Spree. This free party is open to the public, so come on out for the fun. Pick up a free signed photo at Mulder’s VIP table and bring your camera for your own photos with our celebrity chef. Mulder will also receive the Irving Rubenstein Memorial Award (for being an outstanding new MWR manager) from the International Military Community Executives Association.

Oktoberfest kicked off fall fun by Staff Sgt. Adam Keith, 19th Public Affairs Detachment
T
Patti Jeffrey
he JBLM community kicked off the fall season with Family-friendly fun, food, and entertainment with Bavarian flair at the 2014 JBLM Oktoberfest here Saturday, Oct. 4. The event, hosted by Family & MWR, featured traditional German food, beverages, music and activities ranging from wagon rides to foam sword battles. “In previous years we focused more on single Service Members, but this year we really pushed for Families to come out and enjoy the event,” says Colin Brooks, community activities specialist. “We think it’s a great opportunity, especially with the nice weather we’ve been having, to have a good time.” Face painting, a balloon artist, pony rides and a rock wall were some of the more popular Family-focused activities at this year’s event. Brooks says Oktoberfest is popular with the JBLM community, partly because of the opportunity that some Service Members have to experience a trip to
Germany during their careers. Larissa A. Snow attended the event with her Family and said this was her first time attending the Oktoberfest celebration on JBLM. “This is a great event,” says Snow. “The music is my favorite part. I love the dancing and the bands are really getting into it.” Snow says her mother is from Bavaria and the event was a good opportunity for her children to experience their Family’s culture. “I grew up experiencing that culture and I miss it sometimes,” she says. “I think it’s important for my kids to experience where their Family came from.” Snow says even though she hopes that one day she can take her Family to Germany to meet relatives and experience the culture first hand, it was nice to get to see some of the German culture on display at the Oktoberfest event. “We will absolutely come back again next year,” she says.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus • November 2014
The Key Spouse Program is an Air Force program, and all squadrons/units at JBLM have at least one. Key spouses are volunteer military spouses appointed by the unit commander. They perform a vital communication role between unit leadership and Families. Key spouses provide support to Families during time of need and assist Families in finding resources at JBLM and in the surrounding communities. Your unit key spouse is there to listen without judgment, can connect you to community information, volunteer opportunities and referral services and can help your Family prepare for separa-

Budgeting for the holidays By Arnie Norem, JBLM Financial Readiness Counselor
Make a spending plan to keep holiday shopping fun!
A
ccording to the National Retail Federation holiday spending statistics for 2013, the average holiday shopper spent a total of $737.95 on gifts, décor, greeting cards and more. With rising costs, the total could be well more than that this year. To prevent the “buy now and pay later” stresses, have you planned for your spending this year? To keep yourself on track, follow the easy steps below. 1. Review your spending from last year. Be honest! Include items such as cards, postage, gifts, food, travel and even special-occasion clothing. 2. Determine if last year was on target or if you went overboard. Did your spending increase your credit card debt? Do you need to scale back to avoid financial hardship and the stress that comes with it? 3. The budget number is only as good as how well you and your Family are willing to stick to it. Communicate with Family members and begin planning now to avoid last-minute weaknesses and overbuying. 4. Develop a shopping list and stick to it. Set recommended amounts and keep track of spending along the way. Recognize that overspending in one area means that you must reduce costs in another. 5. Say no to last-minute temptations. Stores know the temptation of those “too good to pass up” sales items that lead to impulse purchases, and with it, a case of buyer’s guilt later. A general guide: if it's not on your “approved” list, then the answer is no. 6. How do you plan to pay for it all — paper (cash) or plastic (credit card)? If you plan to use a credit card, try to select a single credit card for careful 20

tracking. The plan should be to try to have the money saved to pay the card off in full. Remember that budgeting for the holidays can help you to avoid a holiday debt hangover. Having a budget can free you up from some of the stress that comes with the holidays by giving you permission to pass
on things you really don’t need. Avoiding excessive debt and overspending is the best holiday gift you can give yourself. For assistance with developing holiday spending plans and budgets, schedule an appointment or sign up for a class, go to jblmfrp.checkappointments.com. Financial counselors have offices at Lewis Main and McChord Field.

NOVEMBER IS RECYCLING MONTH
Five Ways to Green Your Holiday
2014 1. Did you deep-fry your turkey this year? Take your used cooking oil to the Lewis Main and McChord Field Recycling Center (both right by the Commissary and Exchange).
2. Use LED lights to decorate. They use 80–90% less energy and last so much longer!
3. Reusable bags aren’t just for groceries — bring them with you for your holiday gift shopping.
4. Buy someone an experience as a gift — a massage, tickets to a play, a donation to their favorite charity in their name or movie tickets all make great gifts.
5. For your holiday dinners, check out local farmers’ markets for your ingredients. You can often find it cheaper than the stores. There’s nothing like a pumpkin pie made from a fresh pumpkin grown less than 30 miles away!
