The holidays are approaching — are you ready? We’ll help! November’s a special month when we celebrate Month of the Military Family and come together in thankfulness for all we have, including our veterans’ dedication and service. We also anticipate lots of holiday fun, and Family and MWR is planning to keep you busy. Make Thanksgiving less work by joining others at the Club at McChord Field for their annual Thanksgiving buffet or ordering your complete Thanksgiving dinner from the chefs at American Lake Conference Center. Find details on pages 6–7. Holiday fun runs are a tradition at JBLM; join in the fun at the Turkey Trot Saturday, Nov. 18 and Jingle Bell Jog/Reindeer Romp Saturday, Dec. 9. Details are on page 12. Another tradition is joining other Families to watch “The Nutcracker” holiday event (details are on page 23). In celebration of Month of the Military Family, EFMP Families are invited to free sensory-friendly Nutcracker performances and the free Winter Shindig – see page 27 for sign-up details. Other events you’ll want to attend are the annual free Care Fair Saturday, Nov. 4 and a special Big Bang Variety Show Saturday, Nov. 18; see pages 8–9. A big part of living in the Pacific Northwest is enjoying year-round outdoor recreation. In this issue, you’ll find a 6-month list of local and international adventure trips. Pull out the center section and keep the list handy — you might find something new you and your friends can experience this winter! We’re thankful for letting us serve you, your Family and the entire JBLM community. Let us know how we can improve our service by visiting http://ice.disa.mil and sending us your feedback.

Month of the Military Family Celebrate EFMP Families this holiday season In honor of Month of the Military Family, attend free special performances of the SKIESUnlimited Nutcracker for all EFMP Families at JBLM CARES Friday, Nov. 17. EFMP supports Families with physical and educational disabilities — these performances are shorter in length with smaller audiences for theater production in a sensory-friendly environment. Seating is limited; register now at jblm-efmp-skies-nutcracker.eventbrite.com. EFMP Families are also invited Friday, Dec. 8 for the free EFMP Winter Shindig! Registration is required at jblm-efmp-winter-shindig.eventbrite.com. We’ll be decorating cookies, building marshmallow igloos and, for those interested, a guest from the North Pole will be in to visit those who need a short wait and a quiet space. Take advantage of the opportunity to socialize monthly at EFMP Parents Connect and meet others who “get it” by EFMP parents for all EFMP parents. We know it’s hard to be everything. Please make the time to take care of yourself.

EFMP Parents Connect meets the third Wednesday each month from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. at JBLM CARES, 6993 Jackson Ave., Lewis Main. For more information about these EFMP events, call 253-967-7166.

Resiliency Tip of the Month How gratitude helps us November has arrived, and we’re reminded to take stock of all that make us grateful — health, home, Family and love. Sharing gratitude not only feels good, but it builds strength, bonding and resilience in our Families. Sometimes, when we get busy, we forget to acknowledge our blessings (even though we don’t mean to). When you sit down with the Family for the Thanksgiving feast, encourage each Family member to take a turn and list one or two things they are grateful for — you’ll be amazed at the wonderful things your Family has to say! This is an example of a small “Family meeting” where you create a space for members to share thoughts and ideas and connect. At the FOCUS program, we love to teach parents how to hold a “Family meeting” — would you like to know more? Give the FOCUS program a call. Don’t just get by, get stronger! The FOCUS program works with Families just like yours to teach skills that help you be more successful and make the most of seasonal changes. FOCUS is at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331. For more information, call 253-966-6390 or email JBLM@focusproject.org. Also visit FocusProject.org or fb.com/FOCUSresiliencytraining.

EAP TIP OF THE MONTH

How to listen and respond meaningfully Healthy two-way communication is a sensitive yet valuable skill to adopt. The term itself can come across as some type of walkie-talkie jargon, although, in essence, there is a similarity as it relates to signaling. For example, in old military telecommunications, there was an “encoder” and a “decoder.” The encoder’s job was to send a detailed message with as much clarity as possible to the other person receiving the information. The decoder, or receiver’s role, was to ask as many clarifying questions as required to ensure that the receiver understood the original intent and level of urgency of the message. This communication would go back and forth until a succinct memo could be established to send forward to leadership. Since there are perceptions and misunderstandings in the workplace and personal relationships, having a clear under-

Holiday fundraising opportunity Make money for your club, unit or squadron The McChord Field Exchange holiday gift wrap fundraising opportunity is offered to booster clubs, JBLM private organizations, units/squadrons and

standing is pivotal in communication. Another way to describe this type of healthy two-way expression is “driveway talking.” This is usually addressed to couples when it comes to disagreements, although the same principles apply in every conversation. In driveway talking, we are careful to allow the one person to drive (speak) without interruption. Then it’s our turn. Allowing for equal amounts of dedicated time to listen before responding is key. Each person has an opportunity to share and reflect. As we move forward through the changes in fall and early holiday preparations, working on these skills could serve as assets in every facet of our daily communication. Want more information on this topic? The EAP Team can help. Feel free to stop by to see us at 2008B N. 3rd and Pendleton, Room 114 at Lewis Main or call 253-732-2214.
