November’s a special month when we celebrate Month of the Military Family and come together in thankfulness for all we have, including our veterans’ dedication and service. We also anticipate lots of holiday fun, and Family and MWR is planning to keep you busy.

Make Thanksgiving less work by joining others at the Club at McChord Field for their annual Thanksgiving buffet or ordering your complete Thanksgiving dinner from the chefs at American Lake Conference Center. Find details on pages 6–7.

Holiday fun runs are a tradition at JBLM; join in the fun at the Turkey Trot Saturday, Nov. 18 and Jingle Bell Jog/Reindeer Romp Saturday, Dec. 9. Details are on page 12.

Another tradition is joining other Families to watch “The Nutcracker” holiday event (details are on page 23). In celebration of Month of the Military Family, EFMP Families are invited to free sensory-friendly Nutcracker performances and the free Winter Shindig – see page 27 for sign-up details.

Other events you’ll want to attend are the annual free Care Fair Saturday, Nov. 4 and a special Big Bang Variety Show Saturday, Nov. 18; see pages 8–9.

EFMP supports Families with physical and educational disabilities — these performances are shorter in length with smaller audiences for theater production in a sensory-friendly environment.

How to listen and respond meaningfully Healthy two-way communication is a sensitive yet valuable skill to adopt. The term itself can come across as some type of walkie-talkie jargon, although, in essence, there is a similarity as it relates to signaling. For example, in old military telecommunications, there was an “encoder” and a “decoder.” The encoder’s job was to send a detailed message with as much clarity as possible to the other person receiving the information. The decoder, or receiver’s role, was to ask as many clarifying questions as required to ensure that the receiver understood the original intent and level of urgency of the message.

This communication would go back and forth until a succinct memo could be established to send forward to leadership.

Since there are perceptions and misunderstandings in the workplace and personal relationships, having a clear under-

Book discussions are held quarterly at either the Grandstaff or McChord libraries through the end of 2018 — feel free to bring your lunch — no registration is needed.
