What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

VENICIA MORSE is the director of JBLM MWR. She and her husband are prior service, and have taken part in MWR programs as Service members, a retiree Family and now Department of the Army Civilians. She says, “I know how valuable these programs have been for our Family, and I want to ensure that MWR continues to provide these services to the JBLM community.”

2

When I think of Morale, Welfare and Recreation, I think of the great programs and facilities available to all members of our community here at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. My Family and I have enjoyed countless special events and outdoor adventures as patrons, and I’m excited to play a role in these programs as your new MWR director. When I think “MWR,” I’m reminded of our services heritage — the reason MWR exists is to serve our community while being an integral part of it. If we take a look at the bigger picture — see why we’re here, where we’ve come from and where we’re going — our employees and our community will understand more of our purpose. (The chart on the facing page outlines MWR’s history and progress.) It’s rewarding to us to be able to serve you because we stand behind a mission of helping balance work and play, building community and making sure you get the best community experiences while you’re here. We constantly recruit Family members to work in our facilities and also to spend your leisure time with us. It not only gives Families more income, but also helps you connect with your new hometown through child care, libraries, recreation, leisure activities, sports and community events such as the Family Dance, Winterfest, tree lighting festivities, fun runs and so much more. Whatever money you spend with us goes straight back to our MWR services to maintain the programs that most benefit you. Part of our mission is to keep a direct connection to the community we serve, and customer service is very important to me. ICE is a feedback system that plugs you into a direct line of communication with MWR and installation leadership. If you have a concern or question and leave us a way to contact you, you’ll hear back from us! Your feedback helps us know each of your needs better while you’re here. I review all MWR ICE comments, and we have made several changes and implemented programs due to your feedback. While JBLM is your home, I urge you to take advantage of the great programs we offer. I look forward to seeing you out at our upcoming seasonal events, and hope you take a few minutes to share your feedback with us at ice.disa.mil.

Protect yourselves from winter travel dangers

16

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus November 2019

By Patti Jeffrey on’t be caught in the cold when it comes to vehicle safety this winter. The seasoned experts at your Auto Centers at Lewis Main and McChord Field are ready to help you get your vehicle in good shape for cold weather. Here are quick tips on how to winterize your vehicle and be prepared for winter travel. • It’s critical to check your fluids no matter what season it is. Make sure your vehicle has adequate antifreeze, even if it’s not being used. Your engine block is in danger of freezing and cracking (an expensive repair) without antifreeze to protect it. Use all-season oil, which won’t get thick in colder temperatures. Most new cars use 5W/20 or 5W/30. Check to see if your windshield washer is formulated for winter temperatures. Even window-washing solutions have some antifreeze to prevent your windshield from icing up. Remember to check your transmission and brake fluid levels before you go on any trip. • Check your wiper blades to see if they are proper for winter use. Some blades can freeze and become rigid rather than remain flexible. • Make certain your tire pressure is adjusted for cold weather. Tire pressures are naturally higher in warm temperatures and lower in cold temperatures. Underinflated tires wear out more quickly. Also check your spare tire for proper air pressure and ensure that you have a jack and tools needed to change the tire in case of a flat. • Speaking of tires, buy good all-season tires that wear well in both summer and winter. • Get your battery and battery cables serviced. You wouldn’t want to get stuck somewhere in freezing weather for any length of time.

D

• Carry an organizer in your vehicle with these essentials: de-icing fluid, quart of oil, quart of transmission fluid, jug of 50/50 mix of antifreeze, bottle of brake fluid, emergency flares, paper towels, portable air pump, windshield scraper, booster cables and a distress flag. Also carry snow chains or cables, portable shovel and tow chain or rope if traveling in cold conditions or over passes. If you ever need help, you’ll have the supplies on hand to quickly get your vehicle back on the road. Each person in your vehicle should bring extra warm clothing, medication for a day or two, extra water and nourishing snacks. Also carry a first-aid kit, pocket knife, duct tape, flashlight and emergency blankets.

Winterize it yourself inside Need somewhere warm and dry to winterize your car? Rent a stall at one of your Auto Centers! For a fee, you can rent bays and lifts that vary according to function at each location. For instance, you can use a drive-on lift for changing oil easily, arm lifts for changing and rotating tires and rotary lifts for better access. If you need tools, you can check some out from the tool room.

Learn how to perform car care Changing your own oil and fluids and lubing your vehicle saves you a lot of money — learn how at your Auto Centers. McChord Auto Center even has a Lube and Oil Change class and a Car Check-Up class; just call to make an appointment! For more information, call the Lewis Main Auto Center at 253-967-3728 or McChord Field Auto Center at 253-982-7226. JBLMmwr.com

The fun of inDoor rock climbing can leaD to something higher By Patti Jeffrey hen a couple of outdoor recreation program planners began scheming four years ago how they could bring a highadventure indoor rock wall to JBLM, they didn’t know how much time it would take for just the right place and budget to come about. But on Friday, Sept. 27, their dream was finally realized at Adventures Unlimited with the grand opening of the new indoor rock wall. With two auto-belays and 10 manual belays, all with a variety of route challenges, the 1,168-square-foot climbing space offers something for everyone.

W

Dreaming bigger One of the planners, Brad Hinton, says, “We had the idea to create a peak outdoor adventure training school where we could instruct beginners how to safely and skillfully master whatever adventure they wanted to do outdoors — rock climbing, alpine climbing, mountaineering, kayaking, whitewater rafting, cross-country skiing or mountain biking — so they can go out on their own with confidence. The indoor rock wall is one part of the bigger vision.” The outdoor recreation program vision comprises two components, according to Brad. The first is to get people outdoors by offering

a variety of trips and treks, complete with all equipment, expert guides and round-trip transportation. These trips can be anything from day trips to see Northwest waterfalls, Victoria, B.C., and Olympic Peninsula wine tours to outdoor photography, mountain biking and hiking. The second component is to promote and provide a safe and fun environment for participants of all abilities to learn a high-adventure outdoor sport with classroom instruction, beginning techniques, practicing on field trips and mastering more advanced techniques through progressively challenging outdoor experiences. For instance, the new rock wall is open to all climbing ages and abilities. Patrons can use the auto-belay, ask for a belayer or train to become a belayer. If some of these patrons get the climbing bug and want a more intensive experience, they can sign up for outdoor rock climbing trips. Participants on these trips first get an in-house lesson to understand the fundamentals of sport climbing with an emphasis on how to properly belay. Once outdoors, they get the feel of finding their own routes up and down rocky walls after setting up ropes and performing safety checks. While climbing, they learn Continued on next page. to trust themselves, the gear and the belayer. The goal of each trip is to learn how to climb confidently without a guide. Participants might want to press on to learn alpine climbing and eventually mountain climbing. Scott Schissel, lead mountaineering climbing instructor, hopes to train and lead the next generation of climbers to the summits of their dreams. Scott, who also teaches rock and alpine climbing, maintains the philosophy of teaching others climbing skills that lead them to a lifetime of climbing — the same type of philosophy of ODR’s adventure training school.

Using the rock wall The rock wall is designed to be used by a variety of patrons. Anyone can drop in during

business hours and climb to their heart’s content. Rock wall climbing is free for active duty Service members and their Families and $5 per person for civilians, retirees and nonmilitary patrons. Equipment rentals are $3 per item for climbing shoes, harness and chalk bag (or you can bring your own). Each belay class costs $10 per patron. If you’re planning a birthday, Family or teambuilding activity, you can make a reservation after-hours during the week or on weekends. Units and squadrons can reserve a time for PT or for the Warrior Adventure Quest program. For group rock climbing reservations and pricing, email JBLMadventuretrips@gmail.com. Starting in January, classes will be offered for children, adults and women to introduce

Honoring our military community is a national tribute each year N

ational Veterans & Military Family Month is a time set aside to recognize you, the military Family. Military Families know what it means to serve. Every day, you get up and support your Service member, standing by during long trainings and deployments. You know the risks, but you accept this life of service anyway. You know service is an honor. You are the backbone of our military. You are the quiet, but steady fuel at home that keeps the fire burning. You keep track of military pay, benefits and news, because you know they make a daily difference in your life. And when your time as an actively serving Family comes to an end, you support your veteran. Serving is just what you do. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to military Families for the support they provide for our Service members on a daily basis. Your sacrifices on behalf of our country are truly inspiring.

Recognizing your service with a national declaration Military Family Month was established in 1996 by the Armed Services YMCA. Each November since then, the POTUS has signed a proclamation declaring November Military Family Month (for the past two years, the president has also included veterans). With hundreds of thousands of Service members deployed overseas, recognizing the daily sacrifices made by military Families has never been more important.

You are Family & MWR’s mission Today’s Family & MWR mission is to honor the Service members who protect our freedom by providing you and your Families with the same quality of life given to the society you have pledged to defend. The Family & MWR employees at JBLM are dedicated to providing support and leisure services as outstanding as the people we serve. Family and MWR strives to deliver the highest quality programs and services — from sports, recreation and entertainment to child and youth programs — to give our Service members and their Families a much-needed balance of work and play. “During National Veterans and Military Families Month, we salute the brave and dedicated patriots who have worn the uniform of the United States, and we celebrate the extraordinary military Families whose selfless service and sacrifice make our military the finest in the world. “Our nation’s veterans represent the best of America. Generation after generation, men and women have answered the call to defend our country and our freedom, facing danger and uncertainty with uncommon courage. They make tremendous sacrifices by leaving their Families to serve throughout the homeland and in combat, contingency, and humanitarian operations worldwide.” – 2018 excerpt of the presidential declaration of National Veterans and Military Families Month Editor’s note: Article contributions are from military. com, marineparents.com and home.army.mil/lewismcchord. FOCUS Military & Family

National Veterans & MILITARY FAMILies MONTH 46

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus November 2019

CELEBRATE YOUR FAMILY, LOOK TO YOUR FUTURE Make a Family Strengths Tree with us We all know Veteran’s Day is in November, but did you also know November also honors military Families? This month we show gratitude to our veterans and military Families. How do you show gratitude and give thanks in your own Family? Get crafty with fall activities and learn how to make a Family Strengths Tree — come to FOCUS to learn how! Don’t just get by, get stronger! The FOCUS program works with Families just like yours to teach skills that help you be more successful and make the most of seasonal changes. And, in case you didn’t know, FOCUS is also offered through secure video teleconference sessions for Families that aren’t able to come to our office. We call it TeleFOCUS! FOCUS is located at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331. Call 253-966-6390 for more information, or email JBLM@focusproject.org. You may also visit online at FocusProject.org or fb.com/FOCUSresiliencytraining.
