Youth boxing prepares students for life Be “accountable, responsible and reliable.” — Coach Lydell Spry
By Patti Jeffrey
C
oach Lydell Spry greets his students as they begin to enter the SKIESUnlimited introductory boxing lass. “When do you need to prepare for class, today or yesterday?” he asks. Some students answer “today” and others answer “yesterday.” “It’s yesterday,” he says, and he means it. Coach Spry’s students learn how to wrap their own hands, bring their mouth guards and be prepared to jump right in. He says his students are sharp and smart enough to learn life skills as young as age 5. Parents quickly find out that not only do their kids learn the rudiments of

boxing, they learn how to be wellrounded — “accountable, responsible and reliable,” as Spry says. According to Spry, introverted students become class leaders and distracted children become focused. They all learn to precisely follow instructions, use their language skills when expressing themselves, think on their feet, become proactive rather than reactive and develop a direct confidence in all they do. And that’s just for starters. Spry puts each student through the rounds of mit drills, reflex exercises, round-robin repetition, step-backs, bobs, slips, jumping rope, catching, pulling, parrying,
pivoting, weaving, rolling, bending, hopping and leaping with the weighted ball. Some of Spry’s students have gone on to learn more in the ring outside of the SKIES program — several even participated in a local boxing tournament in October. If parents are at all hesitant about enrolling their child in boxing, Spry has the perfect reason for doing it. “Want to help your kids be good leaders? What better way than to get them when they’re young?” Coach knows firsthand — a mentor introduced him to boxing when he was 13, and he boxed his way through school and

Coach Lydell Spry has been part of the SKIESUnlimited program for eight years. Sign up your youth for boxing classes (registration is open through Friday, Nov. 22 for December classes), and they’ll learn valuable life skills. “Want to help your kids be good leaders? What better way than to get them when they’re young?” he asks. Students will learn to focus, follow instructions, become proactive, develop confidence, think on their feet and more.
the Army. Spry’s been coaching boxing since 1984, the past eight of those years at SKIESUnlimited. “I have a passion,” says Spry. “When I was asked what I wanted to do with the rest of my life when I was 13, I found it in boxing.” Youth boxing classes are held Mondays–Thursdays from 3:30–5 p.m. at the Hillside SKIES location, 6398 Garcia Blvd. at Lewis Main. Sign up for December’s
classes by Friday, Nov. 22. The registration deadline is always the fourth Friday of the month for the next month’s classes. This class will teach participants helpful ways of dealing with anger and identify unhelpful ways of dealing with anger that can cause further stress. The class is broken down into eight modules, and you must be able to attend all of them. The men’s classes are held Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Monday, Nov. 4, 9–11 a.m. Women’s classes run Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Tuesday, Nov. 4 (also from 9–11 a.m.). Call 253-967-5901 to register. Infant Massage: Learn the art of infant massage from instructors trained to teach the Loving Touch curriculum. Parents will also learn how to assist their children with starting a new behavior such as chores, manners and respectful language. Classes are held Tuesday, Nov. 12 and Thursday, Nov. 14 (participants must attend both classes). Dr. Dad: The class increases skills and confidence for new fathers, focusing on health and safety. Classes will be held on Thursdays, Nov. 7 & 14, 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. (participants must attend both classes).

Five Ways to Green Your Holiday • Did you deep-fry your turkey this year? Take your used cooking oil to the Lewis Main and McChord Field Recycling Center (both right by the Commissary and Exchange). • Use LED lights to decorate. They use 80– 90% less energy and last so much longer! • Reusable bags aren't just for groceries — bring them with you for your holiday gift shopping. • Buy someone an experience as a gift — a massage, tickets to a play, a donation to their favorite charity in their name or movie tickets all make great gifts. • For your holiday dinners, check out local farmers’ markets for your ingredients. You can often find it for cheaper than the stores. There's nothing like a pumpkin pie made from a fresh pumpkin grown less than 30 miles away!

Shop smart and save Budgeting for the holidays It’s not the size of the box but the thought that matters. You don’t have to spend a lot to show you care.

on’t let holiday shopping stress you out or break the bank. Follow these four tips from Army Community Service’s Financial Readiness Program and create your holiday budget. During the holiday season, have you ever found yourself in any of the following situations? • Feeling like you don’t have enough gifts for your Family and purchasing extra items on your credit card at the last minute. • Thinking that spending an extra $50, $100 or $200 on top of an existing credit card balance won’t make much difference in the long run. • Returning gifts after the holiday and purchasing more than you returned because things are on sale. • Feeling like the more you spend, the more your Family members will feel loved by you. • Starting your shopping late and overspending by making purchases that are convenient but may be two to three times higher in price. Using credit cards or short-term loans can double or triple the amount you planned on spending after fees and inter-

est are factored in. If you have a credit card with an existing balance of $500 and an interest rate of 15 percent, adding an additional $1,000 and making minimum monthly payments of $50 will take 38 months to pay off. Interest paid to the lender of $900 is almost as much as what was purchased. Creating and following a holiday budget will help keep the holiday spending under control. A few steps to assist with creating a holiday budget: 1 Review your bank and credit card statements from the previous year’s holiday season to see where any overspending may have occurred and then make a plan to keep better control for this year. 2 If you haven’t already saved for this holiday season’s shopping, review your budget for the next two months and be realistic about how much you can afford to spend. Make a list of who you are buying for, how much you plan to spend on each person and gift ideas that fit within the plan. 3 Create a list of holiday expenditures (for example, gifts, decorations, meals, charitable donations, travel and events
you plan on hosting or attending) and decide what is more important to fit into your budget. 4 Plan next year’s holiday budget and begin to save for it now. It’s easier to save small amounts over a set period of time to get what you want rather than trying to find the money at the last moment and settle for things you really did not want. Now that you have developed the holiday budget/spending plan, it’s time to put it in action. Keep the budget/spending plan on hand to help stay on track. Save receipts and balance them against your budget on a daily or weekly basis. Over budget? Return the item and find an acceptable substitution. No one will know the difference, and you’ll feel less stress and pressure in the long run. For further assistance developing household budgets and spending plans, call Army Community Service at 253-967-1453 or the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 253-982-2695 and schedule an appointment with a financial counselor or register for an upcoming class.
