Halloween and Harvest Fest are big around here — join the fun & festivities!

FOCUS JBLM Family & MWR

We like parties of all kinds when it comes to celebrating October. We don’t need much reason to have a party, but football’s a great reason to get together at Sam Adams, the Warrior Zone and McChord Pub. See pages 6 and 16 to find out more. Speaking of parties, there’s something for everyone for Halloween, whether you love to scream or are looking for Family-friendly fun. Read all about what’s happening in our exclusive double features on pages 10–13 and 18. There’s nothing like the Pacific Northwest in October to see spectacular fall colors. Learn some tips from the experts in outdoor recreation on the best places to admire the leaves, plus how to take awesome photos to share with your friends — it’s all on pages 14–15. October’s also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Turn to page 27 to learn how you can join Armed Forces Community Service to take a stand against abuse and help someone you might know. Like what you see or have suggestions for improvements? Take a few minutes to share your experiences with us at ice.disa.mil. Customer feedback helps us keep improving our services and programs for the JBLM community.

Tips for capturing the essence of autumn Capturing images of fall foliage is only limited to your imagination. Here are some tips that might help you along: • Backlight the foliage for colors that pop. Since the red, orange and yellow leaves of autumn are translucent and light passes through them when backlit, the result is often an explosion of luminance and color. • Use longer focal-length lenses to

vibrations caused by wind. • Try using larger apertures to create images with shallow depth of field. Images with a shallow depth of field or soft focus can also help create an aesthetic or mood that is more contemplative. • Taking images after a rain will help make the colors more vibrant. • Using a polarizer will allow you to control glare and reflections, making colors more vibrant. If saturated colors are what you are after, a polarizer is what you are after. • Look for color contrast — a patch of

Make trick-or-treating safer for your kids Tuesday, Oct. 31! Trick-or-treat time at JBLM is 6–8 p.m. Make your time out with your kiddos safer with these tips: • Keep your children’s costumes brightly colored or reflective and short enough so they don’t trip. • Instead of masks that might hinder their eyesight, try make-up or face paint instead. • Bring flashlights or glow sticks to illuminate your path. • Have your older children who go out with friends agree on a certain route and return time. • Remain on well-lit streets and go to homes with porch lights on in designated neighborhoods. Don’t enter any homes or cars for a treat. Dorms and barracks are off-limits, and only military units or groups with permits are allowed to have haunted houses, which are usually advertised beforehand. • Stay in sight at all times — never cut across yards, alleys, driveways or between cars. • Parents, check your children’s candies and treats before they eat anything, and ration candy to prevent sugar overload.

Madigan is the first large military treatment facility to use the Department of Defense’s new electronic health record, MHS GENESIS. MHS GENESIS offers enhanced, secure technology and will provide your care team with a complete electronic view of your health records, including medical and dental (for active duty only) information in one location.

As we transition to MHS GENESIS, here’s what Madigan patients should know: •Pharmacy: Our pharmacy will be busier than usual on Oct. 21 and a few weeks afterwards. To avoid longer wait times, get medications beforehand.

•Labs:

Our laboratory may see increased wait times during the few weeks after Oct. 23. If you have a current order, please visit the laboratory before Oct. 20.

•Referrals:

If you receive a referral now and it is valid past our switch to MHS GENESIS, we encourage you to keep a hard copy of your referral.

•Patient Portal: MHS GENESIS provides patients access to their records online and includes a new secure messaging system -- replacing RelayHealth. For latest Madigan MHS GENESIS news, visit our website at: mamc.amedd.army.mil. 25

Adulthood is an adventure Learn how to choose your way to the relationships you’ve always wanted Every October for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, JBLM AFCS Family Advocacy Program hosts a Domestic Violence Awareness event. This month, AFCS FAP is bringing a special workshop called “Choose Your Own Adulthood” (as seen on ABC’S “Today Show”) by Hal Runkel, founder of ScreamFree Institute. Life is full of big choices— career, education, Game of Thrones or House of Cards. Partner selection is probably the biggest choice of all. But what if these big choices were not the ones that mattered most? What about the small choices we make every day? Join NYT-best-selling author Hal Runkel Friday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. (doors open at noon), as he brings humor and wisdom to shed some light on the small, daily choices that make the biggest difference in our lives (like whether you violently react to an insult from your partner or calmly respond instead, or whether you immediately grab what you want right now or patiently pursue what you want most instead). In support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, come learn how to help yourself — and those you love — experience the kinds of grown-up relationships we all crave. To register for the JBLM Domestic Violence Awareness Workshop and to hear Hal Runkel share his vision for adulthood, visit jblm-dvam-event-2017.eventbrite.com or call 253-967-5901. A free copy of the best-selling book “Choose Your Own Adulthood” will be available for first 100 attendees to arrive at the event. Light refreshments and book signing follow the event; registration is limited and available through Friday, Oct. 13. Find more information at screamfree.com/cyoa.

Breathe to relax Get out of the fast lane instantly with a simple tip Do you feel like you’re living on fast forward — like someone hit the remote and you can’t turn it off? As we transition from summer to fall, we may find ourselves busy with our children’s after-school activities, continuous work commitments, increased traffic, changes in weather and preholiday planning. How do we slow down? According to a study conducted by Stanford scientist Mark Krasnow MD, Ph.D., breathing is linked to relaxation, attention, excitement and anxiety. Fast and intense breathing adds to tension, whereas slow and smooth breathing can lead to a sense of calmness. Although we may not be able to slow down time, we can instead practice slow and smooth breathing as our lives are on fast forward. This event is in honor of JBLM military Families during Military Family Month. Registration runs Oct. 16–31 at jblm-family-treasurehunt-2017.eventbrite.com Here’s how the treasure hunt works: Families will have 20 days to find as many items as they can from a list of 50, take 15 photos according to the instructions on the list and answer 10 trivia questions. Prizes will be awarded for the top eight Families.

Resiliency tip of the month ‘I’ vs. ‘you’ statements make a big difference It’s the time of year where the weather is getting colder and trees are losing their leaves. Just because there may be frost on your car doesn’t mean it has to get frosty in the house, too. There are many communication skills that can keep things from getting cold — for example using “I” statements instead of “you” statements: “Why don’t you ever listen?” vs. “I feel unheard, can we talk?” “You just don’t understand me!” vs. “I feel like I’m not being understood and that upsets me.” “You are so insensitive, you just don’t care, you don’t love me” vs. “I’m feeling neglected and I feel the need to be hugged and paid attention to more.” Families OverComing Under Stress helps Families and couples learn these and other communication skills to keep things warm. Don’t just get by — get stronger! FOCUS is located at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331. For more information, call 253-966-6390 or email JBLM@focusproject.org.
