This month, JBLM Family & MWR has a few tricks — but mostly treats — up our sleeves. In celebration, we’re inviting you to a Murder Mystery Dinner Theater (page 8) and daring you to take a Walk in the Dark at Shoreline Park (page 11). Hint: The last event is where our tricks come in. Whether you’re excited about the Harvest or Halloween, there are plenty of events for you. Child, Youth & School Services and JBLM libraries are hosting events for both fun and fright. Turn to the Family & the homefront section, starting on page 12, for details. Plus, we have tips to make your child’s trick-or-treating safe and fun on page 13. If you want to get outside to enjoy the beauty of autumn with the Outdoor Recreation program, turn to page 22 for a schedule of upcoming trips and to find out how you can create your own adventure! October also welcomes several important observances. Armed Forces Community Service is hosting a Domestic Violence Awareness Conference, viewing of the AUSA Conference and looking ahead to Military Family Month. Turn to page 16 for details on these events. As always, your feedback is important to me. Please take a few minutes to share your feedback with me at http://ice.disa.mil. M

JBLM chef chosen for Food Network’s ‘Guy’s Grocery Games’ Guy Fieri hosts the hit supermarketthemed culinary competition, “Guy’s Grocery Games” on Food Network. Each episode, four talented chefs compete in a number of challenges as they navigate their way through the aisles of a grocery store, adhering to “real-world” obstacles. Whether it’s shopping on a budget, substituting outof-stock ingredients or grabbing groceries at closing time, each chef has to shop, prepare and plate three different dishes using whatever they can pull off the shelves. Randy Mulder, business manager and chef at the Bistro at Russell Landing, applied for the show and got accepted! He says, “My main goal on the show was to show that chefs on military bases aren’t putting out the traditional ‘slop’ that so many used to accept. I believe I represented myself, the Bistro and JBLM well.” A meet-and-greet with Mulder and airing of the show is Sunday, Nov. 9 at the Caddy Shack at Eagles Pride Golf Course. Event starts at 7 p.m.; show airs at 8 p.m.

Make it fun and safe for your children — trick-or-treating at JBLM As your children start considering their costumes, take a few minutes to review these tips to make this year’s trick-ortreating experience a safe one. • Ensure your child’s costume is brightly colored and reflective. The costume should be short enough so they don’t trip and shoes should fit well. • Consider using make-up or face paint instead of masks so your child’s eyesight isn’t hindered. • Bring along flashlights and/or glow sticks. Your child may enjoy wearing a glow bracelet or necklace. • Always go with your child as they trick-or-treat, or send them with another responsible adult. For older children who go trick-or-treating with friends, agree on a route and a

return time. • Only go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat. • Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk. If no sidewalk is available, walk at the far edge of the roadway facing traffic. • Never cut across yards or use alleys, and only cross streets as a group in established crosswalks. Never cross between parked cars or out driveways. Parents, remember to sort and check your child’s candy before they eat anything. Rationing treats for the days after Halloween can help prevent a sugar high — see the article at left for more information on treat alternatives.

Salmon Run brings fish & fun to JBLM By Staff Sgt. Adam C. Keith, 19th Public Affairs Detachment

T

he 2nd annual Salmon Run and Bake brought fish and fun for all ages to JBLM last month. The event featured live music, a salmon bake, a 5K and 12K chip-timed race and a half-mile fun run for kids. All of the kid’s fun-run participants received a participation medal. Capt. Jackie A. Anderson, a physician at JBLM, said she enjoyed the opportunity to get out and enjoy the day with her Family. “It was a great way to enjoy the nice weather while incorporating some physical activity,” said Anderson. “We try to get out and run as a family quite a bit.” Anderson and her Family joined more than 400 other participants from the JBLM community at the unique event, which is just one of many running events organized by Family & MWR. 28

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus • October 2014

Lizza Lockett, the DFMWR intramural coordinator at JBLM said the runs are really popular with the JBLM community and, while they are a lot of work, she enjoys seeing people come out to the events. “I’m [happy] when I get to see people getting out and having fun while being active,” she said. “The Salmon Run is a great event because it’s one of the few races that we have a run just for kids.” “We will definitely have another Salmon Run next year,” Lockett added. Anderson said she hoped her kids learned to appreciate the importance of physical activity from events like the Salmon Run. “I hope my kids enjoy it and they don’t feel like it’s something that’s a lot of work but rather a fun thing so they are more inclined to be active,” she said. “As a physician, health and personal fitness are a vital part of my job and my personal life, they are definitely intertwined.”

Kick-start the season of thanks with Turkey Trot It’s time for the annual JBLM Turkey Trot 5K Fun Run/Walk, 10K Run/Trot and 10K Skate! The fun is Saturday, Nov. 22 at the MWR Fest Tent at Lewis Main and includes a chance to win a turkey or a $300 gift card. Look for more information in next month’s FOCUS. For best pricing, register early and online at JBLMmwr.com/races. For more information, call 253-967-4768.

Date night: Dinner + a movie gets a makeover From Operation LiveWell

F

riday night finally arrives, and you and your date are ready to go out to dinner … again. Busy workweeks can lead to falling into a date-night rut, turning to the same trusty staples you’ve been doing for a while now. Have you considered that the date you choose could either kindle or douse that romantic flame? Making the right date choice will keep both you and your relationship healthy. What date activities you choose may depend on how long you’ve been together. For an early-relationship date, you can lace up your sneakers and be a tourist in your own city by exploring your area’s zoo, aquarium or a museum on a walking date. In addition to getting you moving and burning some calories, these activities are great for generating conversations and

even making you laugh. For those who’ve been together longer, try adding some healthy competition to the mix: Join a running club, kickball, soccer or other sports team together. Those looking for a rigorous workout can try kickboxing or self-defense classes. Outdoor dates: The snow hasn’t fallen yet, so the outdoor date options are endless. The best part? Most are free! Hiking trails are a great way to spend the day together, enjoying the sun and getting in some exercise. If you prefer to hit the trails with an experienced guide, turn to the Adventures section for details on upcoming trips with the Outdoor Recreation program. If hiking sounds more like work and less like play, try taking a walk around American Lake. Stop by your local grocery store, pick up a few items, grab a

blanket and you’re ready for a picnic. Not ready to be that in-touch with the outdoors yet? Being outdoors doesn’t always have to mean being one with nature. Instead, research your nearby farmer’s market and spend the next Saturday morning with your date picking out some of your favorite fruits, veggies and local specialties. Then head home and make a delicious meal together. Races and sports: If you and your date are athletic types, or even if you’re not, another date idea that is bound to bring you two closer together is training and participating in a local 5K, athletic event or fun run (like next month’s Turkey Trot!). Decide what event you both are interested in a few months in advance so you can begin training together. Continued on the next page. JBLMmwr.com

Set times that the both of you can go for a run or make a trip to the gym together to get ready for your event. Indoor dates: If the weather isn’t cooperating (and let’s face it, that often happens during a Pacific Northwest fall), you can take your date inside. There are plenty of great indoor options that will take your date beyond the “typical” dinner and a movie. Up for a little friendly competition? Kick the dinner and a movie blues with an Active Movie. What’s an Active Movie? Pick a DVD you both love — we’re not saying it should be “The Goonies” but we’re not saying it shouldn’t be — and agree to a list of words from the movie to use as your Active Words. Every time a main character says an Active Word, you and your date have to do five pushups. Date hates pushups? Squats, jumping jacks and couch dips are all worthy alternatives. Alternatively, you could take your date

indoor rock climbing. Nothing builds trust in a relationship like holding your date’s life in your hands. Up for something a little less risky? Run, dodge and chase your way to fitness with a laser tag date. Want to kick the romance up a bit? Take a dance lesson (salsa, merengue or even line) followed by a night of dancing. Want to spice up movie night? Skip the theater and arrange your own screening at home. Make popcorn that is sure to impress by sprinkling it with some fresh or dried thyme and fresh grated Parmesan. The flavors are sure to wow you and your date. For dessert, make your own chocolate-dipped fruit. Use dark chocolate, which is available in most grocery stores and contains antioxidants. Simply warm a dark chocolate bar or dark chocolate chips over low heat for a few minutes, and then dip anything from strawberries and bananas to peaches and pears.
