What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate.

Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

SGT. DAWSON NAUGLESUCHMAN is the current BOSS president at JBLM. The BOSS program offers recreational and service opportunities to single Soldiers and Airmen serving at JBLM.

In this day and age, we have many challenges facing us, whether they are deployments, extended field problems or even simple problems at home. However, there’s always a program dedicated to the ensuring that Service members and civilians at JBLM are always taken care of! That is the goal of the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation program.

As the newest Soldier to hold the position of Better Opportunities for Single Service members president, I have the great pleasure of working with all the departments and personnel within MWR to provide help to Service members across this great installation.

The amount of work and dedication that civilian and DOD personnel have invested into this base has made it a name known across the Army, both CONUS and OCONUS. One of the greatest things MWR has is the sheer amount of activities and resources available to the residents of JBLM — from school programs and assisting Families throughout the year with many free or low-cost events to the BOSS program that has given incoming and current Service members a great experience and journey to try new things while making new friends and comrades.

To me, MWR is a lot less of an organization and more of an extended Family that has always welcomed and provided me and many others with amazing opportunities and ways to make not only ourselves better but to make those around us better.

I cannot wait to continue improving and providing such an amazing service to the installation and watch it grow and further develop.

Compete in Commander’s Cup sports Join Championship 5K

Join us at the Commander’s Cup 5K Championship run Friday, Oct. 18 at 6 a.m. at the MWR Fest Tent at Lewis Main.

Preregister by calling the Intramural Sports Office at 253-967-6420, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. through Thursday, Oct. 17.

Registration on run day is 4:30–5:30 a.m.

The run will be throughout Lewis Main with road guards for safety beginning at the MWR Fest Tent. Units will gain 10 points for having Service members participate. First, second and third place also will gain 7, 5 and 3 points respectively toward their unit per category.

The MWR Fest Tent is at 2200 Liggett Ave.

Attend the 2019 JBLM Commander’s Cup Swim Meet coaches meeting Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. at Soldiers Field House.

The meet will be Nov. 5–6 at Soldiers Field House. This two-day event is open to active duty military personnel, Army and Air Force Reserve and National Guard Service members who are assigned or attached to JBLM. Teams will consist of swimmers from the same units. Swimmers without teams should attend the meeting for team placement.

Have a fang-tastic time at special Halloween events Dare to go on ‘A Walk in the Dark’ The ultimate creep show awaits all who dare immerse yourselves in a theatrical nightmare.

JBLM’s annual interactive horror theater, “A Walk in the Dark” at Shoreline Park, is a live Halloween event produced by BOSS volunteers. Dates are: • Friday, Oct. 11 and Saturday, Oct. 12, 7–11 p.m.

• Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19, 7–11 p.m.

• Friday, Oct. 25 and Saturday, Oct. 26, 7–11 p.m.

• A not-so-scary time for younger children is available Saturday, Oct. 26, 2–5 p.m. The scares won’t seem so frightening and the daylight will ward off the walking dead.

A Walk in the Dark is located at the end of Shoreline Beach Road at Lewis North.

The cost is $10 per person ages 13 and older and $7 for ages 12 and younger. The not-so-scary day costs $2 per person.

Due to the large number of people going through the event, safety is paramount and emergency exits are available throughout

the exhibits. Guests are always led through the show by guides, and personnel who are trained in first aid are on site.

Actors who want to take part in the production and other volunteers are welcome before the event begins. If you don’t mind wearing a mask or theatrical makeup, or if you prefer to work behind the scenes, contact BOSS at 253-967-5636.

Have fun at free trunk-or-treat Families, come out to Russell Landing Saturday, Oct. 26, 5–7 p.m. for free trunk-or-treating in conjunction with the not-so-scary theatrical nightmare and the Zombie Apocalypse Run. Enjoy goodies that include candy, prizes and giveaways, plus a Halloween craft. rick-or-treat time at JBLM is 6 to 8 p.m. in the housing areas on base Thursday, Oct. 31. Directorate of Emergency Services staff will provide extended patrols during this time. Make your time out with your kiddos safer with these tips: • Keep your children’s costumes brightly colored or reflective and short enough so they don’t trip. Dress them in well-fitted shoes for walking — not loose, flimsy or heeled shoes.

• Instead of masks that might hinder their eyesight or breathing, apply make-up or face paint. Accessories, such as hats or scarves, should be secured in place so they don’t slip over their eyes or face.

• Bring flashlights or glow sticks to illuminate your path.

• Have your older children who go out with friends agree on a certain route and return time.

• Remain on well-lit streets and go to homes with porch lights on in designated neighborhoods. Don’t enter any homes or cars for a

treat. Dorms and barracks are off limits, and only military units or groups with permits are allowed to have haunted houses, which are usually advertised beforehand.

• Stay in sight at all times — never cut across yards, alleys, driveways or between cars.

• Parents, check your children’s candies and treats before they eat anything, and ration candy to prevent sugar overload.

On-base homes open for trick-or-treating should: • Keep your porches and walkways safe by removing anything children can trip over or slip on, including wet leaves.

• Restrain your pets from jumping on trick-ortreaters.

• Place the sign that housing gives out in your front window or on your door that you’re participating in trick-or-treating. If you’re a food-allergy-sensitive house, place a tealcolored pumpkin cut-out in your window or on your door to indicate that you’re giving out non-food treats.

Take Family-friendly fall hikes for glorious scenery

By Brittany Catanzaro ou’re on a limited budget but wish you could have a mini-getaway that’s also great fun for your youngsters. Take them on an easy wilderness hike they’ll never forget!

Leave behind everyday distractions for a completely natural outdoor experience in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Now’s the perfect time to see all the glorious fall colors!

Here are some fun kid-friendly hikes I know you’ll enjoy:

Ape Caves Location: Mount St. Helens National Monument Travel time from JBLM: 2.5 hours Miles: 2.5 loop Elevation gain: 350 feet Pass: America the Beautiful or Northwest Forest (or pay the daily fee) This is a cool and unique adventure to take the kids on. Kids will love to wear a headlamp and explore a cave with interesting formations.

The Ape Caves are actually lava tubes that formed about 2,000 years ago from lava flows.

The cave you’ll access has an upper and lower trail. The lower portion is 0.75 miles long and is perfect for the Family with young kids since it’s easy. The 1.5-mile upper portion is more difficult and can take 2.5 hours to complete.

This section is more adventurous as hikers have to climb over several boulders and climb up an 8-foot lava fall. Once out of the cave

from the upper section, you hike back through the forest to get back to the trailhead making a loop. Bring a headlamp with extra batteries and a flashlight for each person.

Note that you’ll need to dress for cooler temperatures while underground (around 52 degrees year-round). No pets, food or beverages are allowed. Touching formations is off-limits in order to protect cave “slime.”

Barclay Lake Location: Index off Highway 2 Travel time from JBLM: 2.5 hours Miles: 4.4 round-trip Elevation gain: 225 feet Pass: America the Beautiful/Northwest Forest The hike to this lake is easy as the trail passes through a beautiful, lush forest. You’ll find a charming lake that sits right in front of Mount Barring, giving you a stunning view of the lake with a huge mountain skyrocketing in the background.

Enjoy a nice picnic on the sandy bank right by the lake. There’s a toilet located at the end of the trail. You can bring your dog, too!

Hall of Mosses Trail Location: Olympic Peninsula, Hoh Rainforest Travel time from JBLM: 3.5 hours Miles: 0.8 loop Elevation gain: 100 feet Pass: America the Beautiful Continued on next page.

Here’s a wonderful short hike that shows off the beauty of a stunning rainforest near Forks.

The rainforest erupts with a mystical presence showing off its green glory.

This hike is perfect to take little kids and has informational signs posted around the trail.

The massive trees with moss curtains hanging from their branches is a spectacular site to explore. Even the drive to this area is breathtaking. Right next to this trail is the Spruce Nature Trail, which is only an additional 1.2 mile loop. No dogs are allowed.

Alta Vista Trail Location: Paradise, Mount Rainier Travel time from JBLM: 2 hours Miles: 2.4 loop Elevation gain: 400 feet Pass: America the Beautiful This heaven-on-earth location is my favorite to visit in the fall. The blueberry bushes turn into a blanket of fiery red making the scenery incredible.

Your kids will enjoy a variety of viewpoints as they hike around. You can start the trail at Deadhorse Creek, then make your way to Skyline Trail and finish it off with the Alta Vista trail for a wonderful loop hike.

This hike offers stunning views of Mount Rainier with fall foliage in the foreground. Go at sunset for the most breathtaking views that will fill up your camera roll. No dogs are allowed.

Wallace Falls Location: Gold Bar Travel time from JBLM: 2 hours Miles: 5.6 round trip Elevation gain: 1,300 feet Pass: Discover There are many impressive waterfalls along the lush, forested trail as you pass over wooden foot bridges.

The hike is sectioned by lower, middle and upper falls. The hike to the lower and middle falls is easy, and the hike to the upper falls is moderate with switchbacks. The lower falls view has a covered picnic area perfect

for Families to enjoy some lunch and take a nice break. The view from middle falls is the most impressive with a massive Wallace Falls plunging down. Watch your kids be amazed by their first look at this viewpoint.

Save this hike for a rainy/cloudy day. The gushing waterfall has an impressive flow during most of the year, but on a rainy day it can’t be beat. This trail is dog-friendly!

Get your park passes first America the Beautiful Pass (national parks and federal lands) is free for active duty military and spouses with DOD cards. I get mine at the Nisqually entrance of Mount Rainier National Park, but many people from base acquire the pass from Nisqually Wildlife Refuge since it’s so close to base.

You can get the state parks Discover Pass at the Northwest Adventure Center for $35. You can also buy it online at discoverpass.wa.gov for $35.

Keep everyone safe!

Prepare not only for the weather, but for the worst kind of weather — just in case a quick weather shift appears and you need a tarp over your picnic site, rain gear and extra warm clothes. Always dress in layers on a hike and bring extra food and water, sun protection, a map and compass (or GPS receiver), flashlight, multiuse tool and duct tape for quick repairs to a shoe, torn backpack or torn clothing. Include a waterproof tarp for emergency shelter in a downpour.

Also bring a first aid kit on your hike — scrapes, cuts, bites and rashes are common for adventurous kids outdoors.

Establish rules for your children when you’re hiking so no one gets lost and remember trail etiquette (leave no trash or waste behind, let other hikers pass and don’t take anything from the woods).

Most of all, have fun and enjoy bonding closer as a Family on your outdoor adventures!

Ride ATVs at ORV Park Did you know that JBLM has an Off-Road Vehicle Park? Go through ORV training and rent ATVs from the Skeet & Trap Range or bring your own ATV for hours of fun!

What’s required before you ride: 1. JBLM ORV Pass — yearly pass for ORV owners costs $75 for the first vehicle and $25 for each additional per household, or you can purchase a day pass for ORV owners for $15 per vehicle (only JBLM ORV passes are accepted).

2. Safety video (required).

3. Safety gear — long-sleeve shirt, pants, over-the-ankle boots, goggles, helmet and full-fingered gloves.

The ORV Park is open dawn to dusk with your JBLM ORV pass; it closes for military training. Rent ATVs at the Skeet and Trap Range for $50 an hour.

Volunteers help ecology Participate in Prairie Oak Preserve restoration Join the millions of Americans who rally into a single day of action to help change the world.

Share your community spirit at JBLM — get your unit, organization or Family, neighbors and friends involved in Make A Difference Day Saturday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This year, DPFR is partnering with the Department of Public Works to rally volunteers to help restore the Prairie Oak Preserve located on JBLM. We’re looking for 50 or more volunteers to help with restoration and to remove Scotch broom.

Learn to communicate more effectively Marshall B. Rosenberg, Ph.D., states, “Nonviolent communication shows us a way of being very honest, without any criticism, insults, or put-downs, and without any intellectual diagnosis implying wrongness.”

The art of communicating allows us speak our truth or share our perspective in a way that is most likely to lead to an understanding in which we feel our values and needs are heard.

Nonviolent communication is a “Language of Life” according to Rosenberg, who identifies four communication processes to feel more connected to those around us.

The components are: 1. Observations — observing (see, hear, remember and imagine) both who we are and who those around us are free of evaluation or judgment (such as observing/wit-

nessing someone crying).

2. Feelings — the emotions and sensations we feel as a result of our observations. For instance, how we feel when we witness someone crying (empathy, compassion).

3. Needs — the need or value that caused the feeling. For example, what the person in distress needs (comfort, compassion).

4. Requests — by expressing what we actually want and taking responsibility, we convey a request rather than a demand. For example, by stating “Would you like me to help?” we express compassion without evaluation or judgment.
