Fall fun is in the air! Literally, the fun is in the air — costumed bungee jumping with the JBLM Outdoor Recreation program is just one of the adventures on the calendar for this month. Turn to the Adventures section beginning on page 20 for all the details. You can smell fall, too, in the form of freshly made apple fritters. Purchase your autumn treat at the Caddy Shack at Eagles Pride Golf Course, and you’ll receive two tickets to the Rutledge Corn Maze. Details on page 7. (You’ll also make your mouth water reading about the pastries two of JBLM’s new chefs are making for MWR eateries.) On the calendar for this month: Oktoberfest, a customer appreciation event at LeMay — America’s Car Museum and more. It all starts on page 8 of the Food & fun section. There, you can also learn about the benefits of becoming a club member. This month also welcomes the always-popular fright fest at JBLM — Theatrical Nightmare’s “A Walk in the Dark” (page 12). For more seasonal events and details on upcoming programs, enjoy this issue of the FOCUS magazine, and thanks for being a loyal reader. If you have feedback to share about our facilities, visit http://ice.disa.mil. Many Family & MWR programs and facilities will be operating with reduced hours or closures until further notice. embers of our new culinary team are busy creating fresh pastries for our Battle Bean coffee shops, plus desserts for The Bistro at Russell Landing. If you’ve visited any of our Battle Bean coffee locations, you already know that they also serve a variety of items for takeaway breakfasts and lunches. Breakfast offerings just got a whole lot fresher — all pastries are now delivered directly from our own kitchen each business day! Try our new muffins, scones, croissants, Danish, bear claws, pound cake and cookies along with your Battle Bean coffee drinks. You’ll find the new bakery items at: • AFC Arena Battle Bean Café at 2275 Liggett Ave. at Lewis Main. The café opens at 6:30 a.m. weekdays. • Battle Bean Coffee Shop inside Stone Education Center at Lewis Main, 6242 Colorado Ave. The shop opens at 7:30 a.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. Saturdays. The Bistro at Russell Landing, located at Lewis North’s marina, has lots of new menu items, including new desserts prepared by our pastry chefs. Next time you’re at the Bistro, try a brownie or slice of cheesecake after lunch or dinner — or just for a snack! If you have a party or function coming up, call our one-stop catering service at 253-964-1209. Along with other menus, you can order just about any pastry or confection — wedding cakes, cupcakes, breads, gluten-free desserts such as crème brûlée or truffles, vegan pastries or fancy plated desserts. 6

Oktoberfest features your favorite authentic German foods!
Kyrie Juchemich
Drenda Gargus Patti Jeffrey
Meet our pastry chefs behind the baking magic Kyrie Juchemich says she has always had a passion for food, which has led to her career in baking. She grew up experimenting in the kitchen and knew she was on to something. Kyrie started baking commercially in college while attending the University of Oregon. After graduation, she worked in bakeries that specialized in flaky buttered dough pastries (such as croissants, Danish and bear claws), breads, vegan and gluten-free desserts. Kyrie also worked at a resort in Germany where she was able to travel and sample a variety of European food, which she incorporates into her baking. Drenda Gargus says she grew up baking anything her grandmother would let her. She started decorating cakes at an after-school job in the local bakery at age 15. Drenda moved to Louisville, Ky., to attend Sullivan University for her degree in Baking and Pastry Sciences. During her time there, she
worked on her cake skills in several local bakeries. Drenda’s love for the hotel business, particularly the pastry side, led her to an internship at the Seelbach Hilton Hotel in downtown Louisville. After graduating, she made her start in the culinary business, working her way up in restaurants. Eventually she landed a job at The Brown Hotel, famous for “The Hot Brown,” working under Chef Laurent Geroli, where she learned a new style of French cuisine for culinary and pastry. During Drenda’s time at The Brown, she also spent a week at Ghyslain Chocolat des beaux arts to hone her skills in French pastries, artisan breads and fine chocolates. Drenda then leapt at the opportunity to take a position as lead baker at the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Garmisch Germany. She used this opportunity to travel throughout Europe — France in particular — to further her skills in French pastries and wedding cakes.
With our new culinary team on board, you’ll also find new menus items popping up at all our eateries and MWR parties. You’ll get the real deal when you attend Oktoberfest in the MWR Fest Tent next to Bowl Arena Lanes at 2272 Liggett Ave. at Lewis Main Saturday, Oct. 5 from 11 a.m.–9 p.m. The menu features schnitzel wiener art mit jägersoße, bratwurst, brathendl, hausgemachter kartoffel salat mit speck, käsespätzle, Omas’s apflestrudel and more, plus German biers. Visit JBLMmwr.com/Oktoberfest for the full menu and English translation!
Battle Bean is freshly roasted right here Did you know that JBLM has its own coffee roasting operation? The Battle Bean brand is freshly roasted in a state-of-the-art roaster that uses infrared heat rather than direct heat. The process makes for a smoother flavor and lighter roast without any bitter, overbrewed taste. If you like coffee, try a Battle Bean made-to-order coffee drink. Also purchase bags of coffee beans for gifts! Pick a bag up at a Battle Bean location or order online at JBLMmwr.com/coffee_battlebean.html.

sor. As you walk through the show, your disorientation draws you deeper into the nightmare play. “It’s nothing like a haunted house — it’s interactive theater where you’re a player,” says Strock. “We’ve gotten good at refining our special effects to create a classical horror show. If you’re not terrified by the end, then we haven’t done our job.” Event organizers warn parents that this isn’t an event for young children. On a separate day and time, younger
children can come with their parents or guardians. Actors take off their scary masks for a separate not-so-scary show that’s during daylight so youngsters won’t get disoriented. Due to the large number of people walking through the event, safety is the first priority. Emergency exits are located throughout the exhibits and guests are led through the show by guides. Personnel trained in first aid are also on site. Strock and a number of volunteers spend a month beforehand in prepara-
tion. They hold production meetings, lay out floor plans, build sets and work out traffic flow. BOSS sends out the call for volunteers and prepares them with stage directions, rehearsals, costumes and make-up. Volunteers also help with monster maintenance, taking tickets, guiding guests and entertaining those waiting in line.
“A Walk in the Dark” greets you at Shoreline Park at Lewis North (at the end of Shoreline Park Road). Buy your tickets for the following dates: Oct. 17–19 and Oct. 24–26 from 7–9 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for ages 13 and older, $7 for ages 12 and younger. The not-so-scary walk on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 4-6 p.m. costs $2 per person.
Actors and volunteers are always welcome before the production. If you’re interested in participating, call the BOSS office at 253-967-5636.
For previews, more info and a live webcam, visit TheatricalNightmare.com. All proceeds go to BOSS for single Service Member events and activities.
Get in on adult Halloween costume parties to win prizes Who says you’re too old for a Halloween costume? You might win prizes! Ages 18 and older — come out to Heroes Lounge on Saturday, Oct. 26 for prizes, dancing and more. Doors open at 8 p.m. for karaoke, music videos and dancing with food and drink specials. Get ready to judge patrons’ best costumes at midnight for great prizes. (To qualify, arrive at least an hour prior to judging.) Heroes is at 2400 Bitar Ave., Lewis Main. The Warrior Zone also has fun and action lined up on Halloween: • Start off from 6–8 p.m. with a pumpkin carving contest with a $50 firstplace prize. Bring your appetite for a pumpkin pie-eating contest at 8 p.m. First place wins $25. • You could win $100 for the most original costume or $50 for the scariest or best zombie costumes when judging takes place at 10 p.m. • If you prefer gaming, register at 6 p.m. for a Black Ops tourney starting at 6:30 p.m. First place is awarded $50. • Also enjoy deejay music and drink specials. The party is for ages 18 and older. For more details, call the Warrior Zone at 253-477-5756.

As part of three two-week crews, the teens worked with the Student Conservation Association. “The three SCA crews here accomplished a great deal of trail work we would have been unable to complete without their service,” says Randy King Mount Rainier National Park superintendent. Congratulations to the teens for hard work well done. “It is so important for our youth to see they do make a difference in the world,” says Bea Curl, CYS Services Director. What you should know about life insurance A guide from the Financial Readiness Program By Eugene Woods, ACS Financial Readiness Counselor
M
any consumers are unaware of how to determine their life insurance needs or what the right type of life insurance is.
