You insist he’s raised locally.

Why not your car loan? If you think buying a locally raised rump roast makes a difference, imagine how a bigger purchase, like a local car loan, supports the community. Right now, Harborstone Credit Union has barn loads of money to lend to people who not only want to drive a new car but drive the local economy too. Who could possibly have a beef with that?

…including family sporting fun! Junior leaguers win awards At Bowl Arena Lanes’ 2011 awards tournament culminating 34 weeks of junior league bowling, individuals and teams were recognized for their accomplishments. The bowling center had 157 bowlers who competed in 12 tournaments. Eighty-seven awards were given with 30 taking first place, 24 second place and 11 third place in local and state tournaments. Janet Foster, Bowl Arena Lanes manager, says, “One of the great accomplishments a youth bowler can achieve is establishing an alltime record at their bowling center. For the fourth consecutive year, another [JBLM] bowler adds their name to the All-Time Leader Board. Corina Buttram from Storm raised the bar by bowling the first two 700 series for a girl. Corina’s mother set the all-time high series for Bantams — the oldest record on the board, going back 30 years.” For the complete list of winners, visit JBLMmwr.com under Bowl Arena Lanes.

Tots to teens can bowl for sport and pleasure Turn your children on to a sport that’s worry-free, rewarding and fun. Register your children ages 4–18 for the youth bowling league or the Pee Wee league at Sounders Lanes Saturday, Sept. 10, and the entire family gets to bowl free from 10 a.m.–noon. You’ll soon see that Sounders Lanes youth bowling league offers more than other leagues for less money, according to Steve Fontana, bowling center manager. “Sounders Lanes junior leagues get a lot of extras with the weekly fee,” says Fontana. “Their shoes are always free, we host fun tournaments for them and the holiday-themed parties are a big favorite.” The $8 weekly league fee also covers all league equipment, trophies and tournament fees (that typically cost more elsewhere). Youth bowlers also get extra time to polish their skills. After the league finishes each Saturday, they get a half-hour practice to work on their bowling skills or to work one-on-one with a coach, according to Fontana.

Families of junior leaguers can bowl free 10 a.m.– noon Saturday, Sept. 10 at Sounders Lanes!

The Pee Wee league uses bumpers on its lanes to help make a child’s first bowling experience a successful one. Pee Wees bowl one game a week for $3. Coaching is provided and children receive awards at the end of the season. Juniors and Pee Wees begin play Saturday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. For more information, call Sounders Lanes at 253-982-5954 or stop by building 737.

hy pay up to three times more for a birthday party package outside JBLM? Find everything your children want — and more — all within Family & MWR activities. We set up the food, entertainment and table settings while you provide the guests a party they’ll always remember!

Bowl and party at JBLM Enjoy Sounders Lanes at McChord Field with your own birthday party. Stop by or call 253-982-5954 to plan your party. Bowl Arena Lanes at Lewis Main offers three different packages starting at $10 per child. Each pack come with two games of bowling with rental shoes, soda, ice cream cup, balloons, plates and cutlery — and three free games of bowling on the next visit for the birthday boy or girl. Packages vary in price, depending on your tastes and interests. For more information, call 253-967-4661 or stop by and ask for a birthday party package brochure.

CYS Services hosts parties, too The McChord Youth Center offers a variety of packages that each include complete tableware items, equipment setup, and an inflatable bounce house, giant slide or obstacle course, a rock climbing tower, or gaming rooms for play options. Each party option lasts an hour and a half; a staff member is present the entire time. Choose from themed parties, gaming tournaments, climbing the outdoor rock wall and additional activities. Parties start at about $5.50 per youth. For more details, call the youth center at 253-982-2203 during office hours or drop by to talk with a staff member and see the entertainment options.

Plan a skating party at AFC Arena For roller-rink fun, ask about booking a weekend skating birthday party at AFC Arena at Lewis Main. Catering is included in packages if you wish to eat more than a birthday cake. Packages include two hours of skating, tables, place settings, balloons, ice cream cups and invitations — plus a free skate pass for the birthday child on his or her next visit. The basic package starts at $5.50 per child. For all the party options, call 253-967-4458 or stop by the skate office inside AFC Arena.

The many benefits of infant massage By Rosie Anderson, LICSW, Lead Home Visitor, New Parent Support Program

ve

I

nfant massage is a powerful tool that benefits both baby and caretaker. Touch is a primal need for infants. “Touching is the first communication that a baby receives. The first language of its development is through the skin,” writes Frederick Leboyer in Loving Hands, a book about infant massage. The relationship between an infant and her parent is the most important foundation in which they learn about trust, safety and respect. Infant massage helps build a relationship that will last a lifetime. Infant massage enhances bonding, and, when the caregiver learns to respond to her infant’s cues, facilitates communication. Babies are social creatures who benefit from social interaction — it’s crucial for their development. An infant communicates with her body, and the caregiver learns this communication and responds with respect to the infant’s preferences. This can also help the parent with overall

parenting. Positive cues may be eye contact, smiling, babbling or cooing and smooth movements of arms or legs. Signs your baby isn’t enjoying herself include pulling or turning away, frowning, arching her back or crying. Research supports the benefits of infant massage. Psychosocial benefits of infant massage include increased bonding, attachment and body-mind-spirit connection, improved self-esteem and enhanced communication.

Physiological benefits to the infant: • Improves body awareness • Improves relaxation and stress release • Stimulates circulation • Strengthens digestive, circulatory and gastrointestinal systems, which can lead to weight gain • Reduces discomfort from teething, congestion, gas, colic and stress • Improves immune system and sleep patterns

Benefits to the caretaker: • Improves ability to read infant cues and increases confidence in parenting • Improves relaxation • Increases quality time with infant • Promotes parenting skills • Lowers blood pressure and reduces stress

The New Parent Support Program is a professional team of social workers and registered nurses who provide free parenting support and educational services to families with children ages 5 years and younger. The program’s goal is to help parents learn to cope with stress, isolation, post-deployment reunions and the everyday demands of parenthood. For more information, call 253-967-7409.

Infant massage is offered at two JBLM locations. Call 253-967-7409 for registration or more details.

• Decreases postpartum depression and improves sense of well-being Many parents are under a great deal of stress in today’s society and infant massage can be enjoyed by the caretaker and the infant, benefiting health and wellness of both. Infant massage is about building bonds, attachment, communication, nurturing and love. Sign up today to reap the benefits and learn the techniques of infant massage with the New Parent Support Program — classes are offered at two JBLM locations and in-home instruction is available upon request. For registration and more information, call 253-967-5901. Information from “Touch Communication, The power of infant massage” by Ellen Fogel Schneider, Ph.D. C.C.I.M.

How you can make

You can inspire change — get involved with the JBLM Family Actio If you’d like to see changes made at JBLM and beyond, get involved with the JBLM Family Action Plan! By sharing your ideas, you’ll influence how well you live, how well you respond to life changes and how well your family thrives in the military life. The conference is open to all service members and families at JBLM. Designed to improve the quality of life for service members and their families, the JBLM Family Action Plan has been the driving force behind hundreds of policy changes and program improvements since 1983. Commanders use conference input to learn about, and seek solutions for, community concerns. Changes that are

18

adopted through this process produce a satisfied, informed and more resilient military community.

Who attends the conference? The conference is scheduled Wednesday, Oct. 12 and Thursday, Oct. 13 at Stone Education Center at Lewis Main. Delegates — spouses, retirees, widows, active duty military, civilians and teens — are designated to cross-representative groups of about 12–14 people.

What do the delegates do with issues? Each group is given a number of issues to address. Delegates have a common aim — to keep an open mind while discussing which issues should be forwarded to the Department of the Army or Air

Force for resolution. The goal is to identify and resolve the global issues affecting the most people across the military. The conference delegates prioritize issues that will be sent to Forces Command for their conference process. The conference issues vary each year. Some issues submitted last year dealt with deployments, dwell time and healthcare. Specific issues forwarded to the DA in the past year include deployed Department of Army civilians being provided the same tax benefits as deployed Soldiers. Local issues that concern JBLM are also prioritized and directed for response. This year, the JBLM Deputy Garrison Commander will also be given relevant Air Force issues.

Feelin’ good

Finding time for a workout during the back-to-school rush By Kimberly Rowe

Bzzz!

Your alarm’s sounding and it seems like your head just hit the pillow. It’s time for your day to begin. Between school pick up and drop off, plus countless playdates, soccer practice, doctor appointments and piano lessons for your kids, it may seem like you don’t have time to worry about your fitness. Add a career, baby or volunteer work to the mix, and free time may be even harder to find. Whether you head into the office in the morning and spend the day in meetings or you’re a busy stay-at-home mom managing the household and everyone’s schedules, you can fit exercise into your day. With help from JBLM fitness experts, we’ve compiled a handful of ways you can squeeze in exercise daily, no matter how much (or little) time you have. As you check out the ideas that follow, keep these helpful hints in mind: • Get a workout buddy to make fitness fun and help with accountability. • Schedule exercise on your calendar every day just like you would any other appointment. • Set a reachable goal each week for exercising and reward yourself with something fun at the end of the week when you reach your goal.

Fitness classes are a great way to get a heart-pounding cardio workout. InAdd groceries or weights to your child’s stroller and your walk just turned into an even better workout. Make time for exercise with your kids, spouse or a friend and consider it time well spent.

with the results. Don’t search for rock star parking when running errands; park away from the door and walk in knowing you’re burning extra calories.

While your kids play outside, join them! Grab that extra jump rope and challenges your entire body. It’s offered at Sheridan Sports and Fitness Center Monday and Wednesday, 5–6 p.m. Whether or not you have rhythm, try Zumba, a calorie-burning dance party at Sheridan Tuesdays at 5 p.m. For a full schedule, visit JBLMmwr.com.

Walk, walk everywhere. A few minutes of walking throughout the day can add up! Leave the SUV at home and walk your children to school. After hugging them goodbye (if they let you in public!), jog home. When heading to work, park a half-mile away from your office and walk. Always take the stairs instead of the elevator, and wear a pedometer during the day to track your steps and leave you feeling satisfied

get hopping. Play a game of tag or red light-green light and run around.

Exercise while getting ready, during your lunch hour or after work. Do squats while you brush your teeth. Start a walking club at work and get outside during lunch if you don’t have time for a lunchtime gym visit. Dance around the house while cleaning up or turn up the music and dance with your kids while cooking breakfast or dinner. Throw in lunges or squats for an added boost. While it may be tempting to curl up on the couch watching McDreamy on this fall’s Grey’s Anatomy episodes, why not exercise while you watch?! Work out on your home cardio machine and an hour will pass before you know it. Don’t have an elliptical or treadmill?

Do lunges or crunches during the commercials.

Get paid to work out! With the Civilian Fitness Program, civilian employees — with supervisor approval — may receive three hours of administrative leave weekly to get in shape at a JBLM gym. The next assessment is Tuesday, Sept. 13 at Wilson Sports and Fitness Center at Lewis North. Register and download a program packet online at https://ft.lewis.army.mil. For more information, call 253-967-5122. For more ways you can squeeze in a workout, consider taking the time to meet with a certified fitness trainer (free!) or signing up for intramural sports. You can also schedule a free fitness assessment and health risk appraisal at Wilson Sports and Fitness Center; Microfit is an excellent way to start a fitness program or check to see how your current routine is working. You can afford college Get your degree without the debt piling up with four tips from the Financial Readiness Program. By Ryki Carlson, JBLM Financial Counselor

W

hile many high school graduates dream of going to college, it takes time, commitment, money and persistence to achieve this goal. One of the keys to success is planning and budgeting for this expense. A major challenge in this economy is the cost of college. For help finding the true cost of colleges and universities, visit collegecost.ed.gov. Here are some avenues to help you succeed.

ASK THE MONEY EXPERTS

• If you’re looking for ways to cut college tuition costs, consider attending a community college. Not only will community college reduce the overall tuition cost, it offers transferable general graduation requirement

30

credits. Many students have no set major when they start college; the community college option offers students the opportunity to explore fields of interest at a relatively low cost. • Another opportunity is the various colleges that offer free tuition. Many schools offer an attractive option for students looking to walk away from college debt-free with a bachelor’s degree. These colleges offer a wide range of options from liberal arts to engineering. Although they are tuition-free colleges, they may require work-study participation. Since they offer a great opportunity, these schools are also among the most competitive.

Q: How can I avoid the ups and downs of my monthly utility bill?

A:

Budgeting for monthly expenses is easier if your bills remain the same each month. One way to achieve this for your utilities is to talk with your utility companies (electric, water, gas, trash and sewer) about getting on a budget payment plan. If you’ve lived at the same address for more than 12 months, most utility companies will calculate the monthly average usage for the past year to determine your monthly budget billing amount for the next 12 months. They’ll either add or subtract from this amount, based on your actual usage, to provide you the new budget payment amount. It’s important to pay the total amount due each month to stay current and in the program. Give your utility company customer service department a call to assist you in budgeting your monthly utilities.

• Millions of dollars worth of scholarships and grants are available each year to students. The key to winning them is to apply early and often when you qualify. Applying to more scholarship programs gives you more opportunities to win. If you’re beginning your search, databases at the following sites are perfect places to start: scholarships. com, salliemae.com, fastweb.com and collegeboard.org. • Student loans are a last resort. It’s important to understand the process, repayment, deferral and loan type to choose the correct one for you. For details, visit federalstudentaid.ed.gov, studentloans.gov or studentloanborrower assistance.org. Approaching your finances one step at a time provides emotional stability, helps you wisely manage your finances to achieve your goals and empowers you to make sound financial decisions. Army Community Service’s Financial Readiness Program offers a variety of financial education classes to help you achieve financial success. For a schedule, call 253-967-7166 or visit JBLMmwr.com.
