Move over summer… a new school year is here! By Antoinette Walker, JBLM School Liaison Officer

T

he beginning of a new school year can be an exciting time for students as they look forward to joining their friends after summer vacation. Here are a few ideas to help transition back to school and promote a year of successful school experiences.

Elementary school • If you haven’t already done so, move bedtime back a halfhour each week until you reach the desired bedtime for your child. • Talk to your child about expectations for the school year. • Organize your child’s school supplies and backpack and check for communication from her school each day. • Help your child pick out clothes for school.

• Keep talk about school positive and point out the good things about going to school.

Middle & high school • Go shopping together to get school supplies. Many high school students don’t get class-specific supply requirements until the first week or two of school. • Talk to your child about after-school activities he/she would like to participate in and make necessary arrangements. • Address any concerns your child may have about the new school year. • Focus on the parts of school that your child enjoys. Remind your child of different extracurricular activities to be involved in during the school year. • Ensure your child has a designed space for homework. If you need educational support or referrals, call JBLM School Support Service at 253-967-7195.

Curb spending, the new school By Arnie Norem, JBLM Financial Readiness Program Manager

A

ccording to National Retail Federation’s 2016 annual survey, parents will spend an average of $674 for back-toschool expenses — clothing, accessories, school supplies and electronics — for their children this year. Where does most the money go when it comes to back-to-school shopping? NRF’s survey shows that 35 percent of the money spent is for clothing and an additional 30 percent is for electronic purchases. More and more people are buying supplies online, making up more than 30 percent of back-to-school purchases. With a new school year here, it’s important to develop a shopping list. Don’t forget to inventory what you already have

Armed Forces Community Service can help with back-to-school season stressors. Schedule an appointment with a Financial Readiness program counselor to make a budget to incorporate school and sports costs. before you start shopping, make sure you focus on getting items on your student’s school supply list before splurging on extras. Look for clearance sales or deals, but remember stores often use temptation of those “too good to pass up” sale items, which lead to impulse purchases. A general guide: If it's not on your list, you should probably pass on it. Don’t forget that you may be able to find good-quality used items at thrift stores or yard sales. Your budget is only as good as how well you and your Family are willing to stick to it. This can lead to opportunities to talk with your children about money, budgeting and avoiding overspending. Focus the importance of understanding needs versus wants or seeing how media and advertising influences purchase choices. How do you plan to pay for it — cash or charge? If you plan to use a credit card, select a single credit card for careful tracking. Try to have the money saved to pay the card off in full, as interest charges can add up quickly. Financial Readiness program counselors can assist with developing your budget. Schedule your appointment at JBLMfrp. checkappointments.com.

Establishing good bedtime routines for your children can also enhance the transition to school time schedules. Come to FOCUS to learn new skills for maintaining structure and routines that will help your Family thrive! FOCUS is located at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331.
