Design your adventure by Patti Jeffrey

H

ow would you like to get away for the day with a few friends where you can sit back and enjoy the ride? You’d get to design any trip you’d like with professionals who keep your preferences and budget in mind. Where would you go? A lot of groups have already enjoyed getting away with the personalized “Design-aTrip” service at the Northwest Adventure Center at JBLM. The folks with the Outdoor Recreation program love taking both small and large groups on custom trips. “We meet with designated group leaders to get to know them and design a trip with their wants and needs in mind. Personalized trips create strong group cohesion and everyone’s really excited about going,” says Brad Hinton, recreation program specialist. In fact, Hinton says that many groups come back for more trips — from spouses’ retreats and private club outings to military unit fun days. “Personalized trips Professional guides can plan your trip to any create strong group destination you can imagine with day trips or overnight stays. Take a daylong tour of Olymcohesion and every- pic Peninsula wineries, an overnight ski trip to one’s really excited Oregon’s Mount Bachelor or a horseback ride in the wilderness outside of Mount Rainier National about going.” Park — the choices are as many as your wishes. — Brad Hinton, recreation program The staff provides comfortable transportation specialist for you so you can relax and enjoy the journey along the way. Trips depart from the NAC or any location at JBLM. If you have a departure point outside of JBLM, the staff can also accommodate you. Expert guides will assist you with your itinerary options, including departure and arrival times, rest stops, stops at multiple locations and meal options while traveling. You’ll get help creating a budget that includes transportation fees, group event and venue discount tickets, parking fees, ferry and bridge tolls and other travel costs. Some destinations offer special midweek discounts and can be less congested for your group, allowing for more personal tours. Popular outdoor activities include mountain biking, sea kayaking, whitewater rafting, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, showshoeing, cross-country skiing and snow camping. Popular destinations include Seattle tourist favorites, such as the aquarium, zoo, Pike Place Market, Space Needle, lake and harbor cruises, Pioneer Square and more. Other destinations include Mount St. Helens, Mount Rainier, Leavenworth, Victoria, B.C., Crystal Mountain with its scenic gondola, Stevens Pass, Snoqualmie Pass and other places around the Northwest. Active duty personnel, retirees, DOD civilians, your Families and non-military guests are welcome to plan a private trip; email JBLMAdventureTrips@gmail.com with your phone number and a trip planner will follow up with you.

ant to find a place where something magical seems to happen? Once the doors open at our parent-and-child play centers, the rooms come alive with greetings and giggles, dress-up and block-building, and quiet conversations among parents in happily relaxed settings. The two free centers at JBLM help strengthen your bond with your youngsters up to age 5 and help you discover new connections and friendships. Both centers are safe, clean, healthy environments that focus on parents and children engaging actively in play without distractions.

Raindrops & Rainbows at Lewis North At Raindrops & Rainbows, parents find play activities centered on various themes and age groups in every part of the building, such as science, puppetry, construction, animal kingdom, library and computer learning games, water and sand tubs, art, exercise and specialized classes, such as infant massage and music with dance. Outside, a fenced-in playground and garden area captures youngsters’ interest, such as watching vegetables grow that they can harvest and eat in the summer months. “This place helps infuse literacy and social skills into children’s lives,” says Lolita Estrada, site lead. “New parents —especially those from other cultures — are happy to find others like themselves here at JBLM, and they form new friendTiffany Jones

What’s driving your auto-financing choices? By Gesele Thomas, MBA, AFC ®, Personal Financial Readiness Specialist

Need to finance a car? Where do you start? These are legitimate questions that will affect your monthly payments, interest rate and the ability to pay the loan off more quickly. Here are some tips to help you make your decision: • Start with credit unions for your auto-financing needs — they generally offer competitive rates and are nonprofit, though membership and good credit are a requirement. • Banks are your next best option, and provide similar services to credit unions, however they are for-profit institutions. Although membership is not required, good credit is. • If you choose to finance your purchase through an auto dealership, your payments will most likely be to a finance company instead of the dealer. Dealerships usually have relationships with finance companies, because they don’t have the cash on hand required to finance your purchase. Commissions paid to dealers for that relationship are passed on to you, the consumer, resulting in an increase in the normal cost to finance that loan. • Finance companies can charge very high rates and often cater to consumers who are considered a credit risk. • Financing can be obtained through websites, but you should exercise caution as these online companies may not be legitimate. Interest rates tend to increase as you work your way down this list. If you’re considered a credit risk and are forced to obtain financing at a high interest rate, we recommend requesting a small loan to which you could apply larger payments, reducing the amount of interest paid over the lifetime of the loan. As an example, a vehicle purchased for $5,000 and financed at 18 percent interest for 36 months would have a monthly payment of $180.76. Total interest paid in 36 months would be $1,507.45. By increasing your auto loan payment by $100 per month, you not only shorten your auto loan repayment by a 15 months, but you’ll also save $646.55 in interest. Resource: bankrate.com Financial counselors at AFCS are available to assist you with navigating those choices.
