What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

CHRISTIAN ASHFORD is 2019 Boys & Girls Club of America Pacific Military Youth of the Year and is a member of Hillside Youth Center/Teen Zone.

The fastest way to capture a teen’s attention is to start by having fun, and JBLM’s MWR serves as the center of fun activities for our JBLM youth. I encourage all teens to get to know more about MWR and take advantage of all it has to offer. MWR has lived up to the challenge of boosting the morale of military Families, attending to the welfare of our military communities, and providing safe recreational activities. This service is especially important to military teens. It helps to ease the stress of moving to a new place by connecting you to other teens and helping teens reestablish their hobbies and interests. If you played flag football or soccer at your previous duty station, MWR helps you pick up where you left off at your new duty station. MWR impacted my life and my personal fitness through the CYS-sponsored Funky Fit Fitness Academy. This program provides a safe place for military teens to learn more about the proper use of gym equipment and age-appropriate exercise. Our instructors, Justin Graham and Nakia Pruitt, were knowledgeable and encouraged us to work at our own pace. This training prepared me to serve as an athlete on my high school cross county and track teams. This is only one of the many services MWR provides for teens. Military life has many challenges, but MWR helps military teens find their way to fun, fitness and success. I encourage all JBLM teens to check our what our MWR has to offer. Editor’s note: See Christian’s compelling story of how he became the 2019 Boys & Girls Club of America Pacific Military Youth of the Year, starting on page 31.

Walk with curious birders By Patti Jeffrey ave you noticed that every time you get outside, birds are everywhere? Not like the horrifying Alfred Hitchcock thriller, but birds of all kinds, shapes and sounds surround us — waking us in the morning, chattering away in the evening. Birds can get us outside, making an easy connection with our natural world. Look more closely and you’ll soon find that birds can also thrill us with the hunt for elusive treasures, much like the virtual reality game Pokémon Go. Start a new adventure by going on a birdwatching walk at JBLM. Bird watchers gather monthly at Eagles Pride Golf Course to take about a 3-mile walk around the wilder parts of the golf course and the surrounding woodlands and wetlands trying to spot birds they’ve not seen before.

Birders excited to glimpse new species at JBLM “Birding groups are huge fans of JBLM,” says Dave Wienecke, environmental management system and sustainability manager. “They had no idea this resource was here! Every time birders come out for a walk, they have a different experience. Those who join us learn from each other and find more species than when you go it alone. The more people you have in a group, the more eyes to see and ears to listen for new species. Plus, you get a nice walk, can make new friends and have fun.” Dave has been an integral part of bird watching since the first organized walk in 2013. Through a collaboration with JBLM’s Public Works, MWR, the Department of Fish & Wildlife and Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, local birding societies partner up to lead the walks. “We meet at Eagles Pride’s driving range parking lot the third Thursday of each month, rain or shine, year-round,” Dave says. “The bird and nature walks start at 8 a.m. and are led by a Seattle Audubon Society master birder and co-sponsored by the Seattle, Tahoma and Black Hills Audubon societies.” Those who join the walks learn about wildlife management, natural history of the area and what species to listen for and spot. For instance, in August, an expert from the Tahoma Audubon Society gave a bird-banding demo to the group and spoke about how they hope to manage health, habitat and diversity with new data that the multiyear research project will collect and publish.

22

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus September 2019

Above: A male dark-eyed junco is identified by birders on their nature walk. Below: Birders scan the tree tops for new species at Eagles Pride Golf Course.

Expectations for discovery are high Birders report new sightings each month, such as the merlin falcon, Northern Harrier raptor, Bullock’s oriole, barred owl and many others. Each new species discovered carries an exciting story with it, such as a teacher on summer break who’d never had a good view of a western tanager, excitedly spotting one feeding in a fir tree next to the parking lot on the group’s way back. After each walk, the number and type of species spotted is entered into a national database, managed by Cornell University’s Lab of Ornithology, that helps track bird populations throughout the United States. As the seasons change, so do the birds. In the upcoming months, the migratory bird population dwindles, but the year-round species can be plentiful. You might not see a rufous hummingbird, but you can look for an Anna’s hummingbird. Out of a handful of woodpecker species, you’ll most likely spot the downy woodpecker. From sparrows, flickers, finches and chickadees to ducks, osprey and hawks,

the number of wintering species spotted can vary up to about 40. When migratory birds return, groups have reported seeing up to 58 different species in a single walk. “It just illustrates nature’s fascinating canvas of life with migratory birds, waterfowl and yearround birds we’ve found so far,” Dave says.

How to join in Curious to join a walk? The leaders will show you how to listen and look for different species. If you have binoculars, bring them. Dress in layers, since mornings start out cool. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water and snacks. The next walks are Thursdays Sept. 19, Oct. 17 and Nov. 21, 8–10 a.m. You don’t need a base pass and you can just show up — no registration is needed. Anyone is welcome to join. If you have a disability, call first so the leaders can make special arrangements: 253-606-1398. Eagles Pride Golf Course is just off I-5 at Exit 116 and is open to the public.

FOCUS Adventures

Discover dog-friendly trails close to JBLM By Brittany Catanzaro ou don’t have to go very far to find nature walks perfect for your four-legged Family members to enjoy along with you! September’s a great month to start exploring scenic and easy trails around the area. Keep this list handy for those times you’re itching to get out on a new adventure for the day!

Y

Bob Bammert Grove Trail Location: Capitol State Forest Time traveling from JBLM: 45 minutes Miles: 1.2 round-trip Elevation gain: 288 feet Pass required: Discover Pass Great trail to hike in any season but the best time to go is in the fall when all the leaves turn orange. The fall foliage is simply stunning. This lightly trafficked and easy trail takes you though a lush, dense forest where your dog can enjoy a lovely walk away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The short driving distance from base makes this hike absolutely easy to get to.

Coal Creek Falls Location: Cougar Mountain near Newcastle Time traveling from JBLM: 70 minutes Miles: 2.5 round-trip Elevation gain: 269 feet Pass required: None This lush trail is popular for dogs and leads

to a scenic waterfall. The waterfall flows behind a wooden foot bridge where you can watch and enjoy the view. Best time to visit this waterfall is the spring when the flow is fullest (it’s still a great hike any time of year). The best part about this hike is that if you want to hike further, you can add other trails to your adventure that are right in Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park — there are 38 miles of hiking trails from which to choose. Be sure to grab a map of the web-like trails located at the trailhead, and choose which you want to hike (it’s easy to create a loop). Since this area isn’t far from base, you can choose a trail to walk in a day trip and another trail on another day trip. You definitely can make your way to this area more than once to experience other trails.

Porter Creek Falls Location: Capitol State Forest Time traveling from JBLM: 1 hour Miles: 2.2 round-trip Elevation gain: 450 feet Pass required: Discover Pass Next to Porter Creek Campground (where you can camp overnight if you choose) is a gorgeous mossy trail that leads to a little waterfall and rushing river. The hike is easy and perfect for a Family who loves to bring their dog(s) on hikes. If you find yourself wanting to Continued on page 26.

hike on a rainy day but don’t know where to go, then make Porter Creek Falls your choice. The rain makes the moss pop with vivid color!

Rattlesnake Ledge Location: North Bend near I-90 Time traveling from JBLM: 70 minutes Miles: 4 round-trip Elevation gain: 1,160 feet Pass required: None Hike through a shaded forest, up switchbacks and to a ledge with spectacular views of surrounding mountains and turquoise-colored Rattlesnake Lake down below. You’ll see a stunning view that even your dog can enjoy! Be sure to have your dog on a tight leash and watch kids closely — the ledge at the top is a steep cliff. At 1.9 miles, you’ll encounter a fork with a sign. Go right at the fork and you’ll immediately arrive at the ledge. There are plenty of rocks to sit on to snack and enjoy the view. You and your Family also can have lunch at the picnic tables near Rattlesnake Lake.

Chambers Bay Loop Location: Steilacoom Time traveling from JBLM: 30 minutes Miles: 3.4 loop Elevation gain: 258 feet Pass required: None Hike the loop around Chambers Bay Golf Course that includes the Grandview Trail, Soundview Trail and Central Meadow Outer Loop to view the entire park. You also have the option of walking the catwalk above the train tracks to get panoramic views of Puget Sound

and Anderson, McNeil and Fox islands. This Family-friendly trail is entirely paved, so it’s great for strollers. The location also includes a playground huge grass lawn. Enjoy the beach at sunset as the sky over the Olympic Mountain Range turns shades of orange and pink!

Little Mashel Falls Location: Eatonville Time traveling from JBLM: 1 hour Miles: 4.5 round-trip Elevation gain: 500 feet Pass required: None This hike will keep you and your dog(s) entertained as you hike to three incredible waterfalls: Lower Little Mashel Falls, Little Mashel Falls and Tom Tom Falls. You can walk behind one of the waterfalls, which makes your excursion more exciting. Also enjoy swimming in the nature pools at the base of the falls to cool off in the summer months. Start the trail at Bud Blancher Trail (you can search for the trailhead on online maps). To find the falls: After you park, hike down the dusty path; the trail veers right. You’ll shortly pass a wooden bridge and then a second wooden bridge at 1.5 miles. After the second wooden bridge, find the trail sign on the left and follow that trail through the forest. You’ll know you’re close to the first waterfall when you see two yellow diamond-shaped trail markers on a tree. The markers will lead you to a path; go left down a trail that leads you to the first waterfall. Continue back on the main path and follow the markers to see the next two waterfalls.

Tips for successful hikes with your canine companion • Bring canine first aid supplies in addition to your 10 essentials. • On many trails and lands, dogs are required to be on leash, even if they’re trained for voice control. It’s best to assume that leashes are required when going out on walks. • Now that it’s hunting season, dress your dogs in bright colors (like the hunting orange example on the previous page) and make absolutely certain they stay on-leash. • Be sure to pack out or bury your dog’s waste. Don’t leave a bag of poo alongside a trail. • Yield to other hikers, pulling your dog alongside the trail. Even if you have a super-friendly pet, you cannot predict encounters with others unfamiliar to them in new surroundings. Get more tips about hiking with your dogs at wta.org/dogs.

By Lauren Finnegan, JBLM Public Affairs hen JBLM youth, Christian Ashford, saw the great strides his friend and 2018 Pacific Military Youth of the Year, Katie Wilton, was making in her fight to combat homelessness, he knew he wanted to follow in her footsteps and make a difference. Now a year later, Christian has done that — not only making a difference with his campaign to combat teen bullying, but with his win at the 2019 Boys & Girls Club of America Pacific Military Youth of the Year celebration in San Diego in July. “I was in complete shock when I heard them call my name,” Christian says about his win. “It was one of the most impactful moments of my life so far, and it was an amazing experience.” To make it to regionals, Christian had to compete in and win the JBLM Military Youth of the Year as well as the Washington State Military Youth of the Year competitions. Each round consisted of a written essay, speech and an interview focused on how they’re making an impact among their peers. Christian’s impact has been his commitment to end teen bullying. The idea for this initiative came to him during a conversation with a peer while at the Hillside Youth Center/Teen Zone where he’s a member of the Boys & Girls Club. “One of the [club members] was acknowledging that bullying was a problem in their school and I really took inspiration from the conversation,” Christian says. “I took it upon myself to start

the Bully Proof initiative and create the Bully Box. If there’s something that [students] need to report or they saw bullying, but they weren’t comfortable talking to the teachers about, they can now write it down and put it in the box.” Charissa Lizama, program specialist at Hillside Youth Center/Teen Zone, says that the Bully Box is having a positive effect on the teens at the center. “We want the kids that are being bullied to say something and to have their own voice,” Charissa says. “Today when I peeked in, there were about 10 notes, which will help us to stop [the bullying]. This is the perfect thing that we need in here.” Christian also does speaking engagements for elementary school aged children in an attempt to stop bullying before it starts. At each event, he hands out Bully Survival Kits

that include resources, tips and treats to help the children remember the event. “After my first speech, I realized I needed something to stick with the kids other than just talking to them,” Christian says. “I needed something that they’ll remember after I leave. So I came up with tips like, ‘Don’t be a DumDum, bullying is not smart,’ ‘Be a Smartie, don’t bully,’ and included those candies to go along with it.” “If I win National Military Youth of the Year, I’m going to spread the Bully Boxes to all the military affiliated Boys and Girls Clubs across the nation.” Editor’s update: Christian traveled to Washington, D.C., in August where he competed in the 2019 National Youth of the Year competition. Even though he didn’t win nationals, he’ll still be continuing his anti-bullying campaign.

She’s a survivor of 24 years of abuse by her former husband, Ulner Still. In their unique case, Justice John F. O’Donnell handed him 36-year sentence in December 2004 (a landmark for New York State), the longest sentence given for the crime of domestic violence where the victim survived. Instrumental in the conviction was a video Ulner had their oldest son record while he was abusing Susan. More information on Susan can be found at elitespeakersinternational.com/susan-still. Join JBLM’s Family Advocacy Program in this important event to increase and spread awareness about domestic violence and learn how you can help yourself and others to prevent the devastating effects of domestic violence in our communities.
