Have a concern about military life? By Patti Jeffrey

If you could influence how well you live, how well you respond to life changes and how well your family thrives in military life, would you speak up? You can be part of how policies and programs are changed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord simply by speaking up, and the Army Family Action Plan is the main way to let your voice be heard. Commanders at all levels use your input in the AFAP process to learn about, and seek solutions for, community concerns. Changes that are adopted through this process produce a satisfied, informed and more resilient military community.

Let your voice be heard If you don’t speak up, who will? All ranks, civilian personnel, family members, retirees—all those who live, work and play at JBLM—can speak out. You have until Monday, Sept. 13 to turn in your comments for this year’s Army Family Action Plan Conference, which is being held at Lewis Main Thursday, Oct. 13 and Friday, Oct. 14. To submit an issue, go to JBLMmwr. com/acs/AFAP. You’ll find the AFAP Issue Submission button on the right. The AFAP is also seeking input on McChord Field Air Force issues and is recruiting Air Force delegates for the formerly all-Army AFAP Conference. The conference delegates prioritize issues that will be sent to Forces Command for their conference process.

Who attends the conference? During the year, conference delegates are recruited through all available media and assigned through

military units. All delegates who attend the conference—spouses, retirees, widows, active duty military, civilians and teens—arrive in civilian attire and are designated to cross-representative groups of about 10 to 12 people.

What do the delegates do with issues? Each group is given a number of issues to address. Delegates have a common aim—to keep an open mind while discussing which issues should be forwarded to the Department of the Army or Air Force for resolution. The goal is to identify which global issues affect the most people across the military and resolve them. “Each year, we find the emphasis of issues changes,” says Christine Swift, AFAP and Army Family Team Building manager. “All valid issues are prioritized and every issue is tracked. Some that don’t get forwarded to the next level are worked again the next year.” For example, says Swift, several current issues are deployments, dwell time and health care. Specific issues forwarded to the DA level in the past year include deployed Department of Army civilians being provided the same tax benefits as deployed Soldiers. Local issues that concern JBLM are also prioritized and directed for response. This year, the JBLM Deputy Garrison Commander will be given relevant Air Force issues to address. AFAP conferences have influenced changes such as: • GI Bill sharing with family members • Army Family Team Building and Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers established

• TRICARE for Life • Chiropractic care for active duty • Family Readiness Groups instituted • SGLI increased from $50,000 to $400,000 • Thrift Savings Plan implemented • Family Separation Allowance increased from $100 to $250 monthly

How to be part of the conference If you want to make a difference and are ready to take part in improving the lives of those in the military, consider being a delegate at the AFAP Conference. If you want to see how the process works, you also may visit or volunteer at the conference. Call the AFAP program manager at 253-967-3689 for more information.

Feelin’ good

Get fit with easy-to-follow tips

from JBLM fitness experts Set goals

Boredom is an obstacle to success—keep it fun by varying your workout and finding a regular workout partner.

When setting goals, make them realistic, attainable and measurable. Do you want to reduce body fat levels, lower resting heart rate or reduce your risk of disease? Decide between shortterm and long-term planning, and don’t get discouraged with the time involved. As your energy level increases and your body becomes toned, you’ll be motivated to continue your progress.

Ursula Buford by Thom Ward McChord Field Fitness Center director

Fad dieting or fasting to lose weight actually backfires Scientific research shows that restrictive dieting leads to a reduction in your body’s ability to burn calories while at rest. In trying to protect itself, your body attempts to conserve energy for future need and whittles away muscle, carbohydrates and water. The quick loss in muscle mass (there is little-to-no fat loss) leads to decreased muscle tone. This kind of diet also strains the cardiovascular system as weight cycles.

You’re never too old to start exercising According Science News, people in their 70s and 80s began a weight-lifting program and showed significant gains in muscle size and strength. Regular exercise extends your life span and improves the quality of life— establish good habits today.

Seek expertise from fitness center staff Try not to fall into the traps of false information generated from sources at the checkout line of the local super20

market. Instead, seek reliable sources of information like certified fitness trainers at JBLM fitness centers. The more you rely on misguided information and ineffective programming, the less you’ll see motivating results.

Get a workout partner Work out with a regular partner. He or she will give you the motivation to show up at the gym or remind you if you don’t! It also helps to have a laugh while working out. After all, working out should be fun, not a chore.

Vary your exercises

Quick fitness tips for teens by Amanda Randall Youth fitness trainer at Lewis Main

Set reasonable goals: Losing onehalf to one pound a week is realistic. Add daily exercise: Start with something simple like walking the dog. Enlist the support of your family: Ask your parents to help. Block out cultural messages that emphasize being thin: Don’t focus on TV shows and fashion magazines Schedule a visit with your healthcare provider: Make an appointment before starting a fitness routine.

Don’t fall into the rut of doing the same routine all the time. Try a yoga class or change from machines to free weights to keep your body challenged. Consult with a certified fitness trainer for ideas to keep your program fresh.

Find your motivation from within: Weight loss won’t happen unless the desire comes from inside you.

Think positively

Improve fitness, morale and lower your stress level by working out. Register for the Civilian Fitness Program at https://ft.lewis.army.mil/. The next assessment is Tuesday, Sept. 21; for more information, call 253-967-5122.

Positive reinforcement is powerful self-motivation. Tell yourself that you love exercising (even if that isn’t entirely the truth). Pat yourself on the back for a job well done.

For a complete list and details on the Youth Fitness Program, visit JBLMmwr.com.

Save time & money with help from the Financial Readiness Program By Ryki Carlson, JBLM financial counselor

I

It’s never too early to start crossing off items on your holiday gift shopping list. Starting early can ease possible stress on your budget, and doing it online can save time and money. Save time and money by shopping online with simple tips that make holiday—and everyday—shopping less stressful and financially friendly. • Create a list of the people you plan to buy gifts for and the amount budgeted to spend. To help you with budgeting consider attending the Planning & Budgeting class at Army Community Service. Planning & Budgeting: Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 2:30 p.m.

• If you purchase from an online merchant, keep the shipping costs and delivery time in mind. Keep good records about the transaction, including order number, shipping costs and dates.

Find coupons and promo codes online for additional savings on your holiday shopping—it’s never too early to start!

• Ensure you comparatively shop for products. Sites such as PriceAdvance. com will automatically search other retailers for better prices while you shop. Try beatmyprice.com for locating the best price after finding the item you want. • Use coupons to help cut costs. Find coupons for purchases at retail stores and promotion codes for online purchases at sites such as retailmenot.com, couponcabin.com and currentcodes.com. • Keep track of your holiday spending including incidentals. Jot down everything you spend in a notebook to help you stay on budget and encourage you to find creative cost-effective gifts. Before using your credit cards for purchases, consider attending ACS’s Using Credit Wisely or Understanding Money and Credit classes.

Using Credit Wisely: Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 1:30 p.m. Understanding Money & Credit: Friday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m.

• Save your receipts for returns or exchanges. Be sure to check credit and debit card purchases and verify them against your monthly or online statement. • Remember to shop only at secure websites, which offer encrypted technology to transfer information to the merchant’s computer. When ordering, check to see if website has an “s” after the “http” during the checkout process. Another way to know if it’s secure is to look for a closed padlock or unbroken key at the bottom of the screen.

Free money-wise seminars are open to all military personnel, retirees, spouses and children 13 and older. For a complete list of classes, visit JBLMmwr.com. JBLMmwr.com

Loan Rewards from ACU.

Get your next auto loan directly from America’s Credit Union. With Loan Rewards ACU will match 2% of your scheduled payment and apply it to principal when your payment is made in full on or before the due date. Best of all, this program is good for the life of your auto loan with ACU.

Why not earn cash back on payments you would make anyway? Contact ACU for more details. Note: All of your ACU accounts must remain in good standing to be eligible for loan rewards. If any loan with ACU is past due more than 30 days, reward payments will cease. Existing ACU loans are not eligible for this program. This offer expires 9/30/10 and is subject to change without notice.
