Back-to-school time brings Read a Book Day & more observances to JBLM With each September comes the first day of school — a day of excitement and perhaps a little anxiety. Those of us at Family & MWR wish you the best of back-to-school seasons and invite you to celebrate a few September observances with us: Read a Book Day is Friday, Sept. 6. Plus, September is National Library Card Sign Up Month and home to Banned Books Week (page 29). The Teen Zone is hosting a 2K13 and Kinect tourney in celebration of National Video Game Day Thursday, Sept. 12. For details, see page 15. In honor of Self-improvement Month, enroll in a Family Advocacy Program class to improve your parenting skills, marriage or stress level (page 18), and visit a JBLM gym for a health and fitness overhaul (page 24). There are other upcoming special events — Operation Rising Star, Fall Flea Market, Oktoberfest and more, all on page 8. Plus, the American Lake Conference Center is reopening to host your special events (page 12), and we have new plans for your Family & MWR eateries on page 6. After you visit one of these facilities or events, please share your experiences with me at http://ice.disa.mil.

o matter how wonderful your Family or roomies are at home, everyone needs to go out for a meal together every so often.
Eating together is often the glue that makes working or living together work out much more nicely. Some MWR dining spots cater to adults, but many MWR eateries are also kid-friendly, with food and menus that consider children’s appetites. For instance, the McChord Club has a German buffet Thursday, Sept. 19 that’s popular with Families. It’s served from 5–9 p.m. and includes all your favorites. The price is $6.95 for ages 4–10 and $16.95 for adults. Reserve your spot by calling 253-982-5581. Another child-friendly locale is Battle 6

Bean Café at AFC Arena — a perfect combo with skating right outside the eatery. Families like to come out on weekends for inexpensive skating combined with their favorite type of lunch or dinner. Battle Bean Café offers a variety of food to share among the kids, including 16-inch pizzas, nachos with cheese and chili, hot dogs, Polish sausages and pretzels. Sweets include pastries, muffins and cookies. Groups also get a kick out of bowling. Bowl Arena Lanes is across from the skate arena, with plenty of large tables for snacking and dining. Children have plenty to choose from on the menu, including grilled cheese sandwiches, quarter-pound hamburgers, hot dogs, pizzas, tuna sandwiches, corn dogs, chicken tenders, onion rings and much more. If you’re at McChord, Sounders Lanes
Bowling Center offers chicken strips, cold and hot sandwiches, ice cream cones or cups, plus pizzas, corn dogs and hot dogs. It’s located at 737 Jackson Blvd.

merican Lake Conference Center, The Bistro at Russell Landing, the McChord Club, JBLM golf courses, bowling centers and coffee shops are upping the ante on food service. Enter a new professional culinary staff with the aim to provide consistently prepared, cooked and baked food fresh each day and at each venue. Business Operations Director Roger Disbrow heads the team with executive chef Jason Barnett, which also includes sous chef John Presto and pastry chef Drenda Gargus. House chefs, such as Randy Mulder at The Bistro at Russell Landing, work closely with the team. Together, the team is: Providing comprehensive catering menus that include themed buffets, plated meals, hors d’oeuvres and other meals. However, guests are not limited to the listed menus. Any menu can be created and budgeted to the needs of the customer. Revamping all house menus to include variations on tested favorites at different locales. For instance, the Lebanese pizza at the Warrior Zone is a big hit with younger Service members. At The Bistro at Russell Landing, the new Lebanese flatbread appetizer is presented as a variation. Similarly, the Portuguese sausage hamburger introduced at the Caddy Shack at Eagles Pride Golf Course is now being served at the Bistro. Each menu will remain distinctive while adapting favorites proven to be popular among similar patrons. Introducing in-house bakery items to MWR eateries, such as Battle Bean Coffee locations, Café Lancelatte and The Bistro at Russell Landing. The pastry chef bakes muffins and pastries to
be sold at the coffee shops, as well as desserts for the Bistro and cakes for catered functions. Providing fresh, hand-cut meats for menus and progressive cooking for buffets. All guests will experience freshly prepared buffet items, whether they’re the first or last in line (rather than cooking all the buffet items at once and reheating until served). Setting operating standards throughout MWR eateries, which include presentation and quality of food served, preparation, checklists, sanitation, staff cross-training and more. Planning all events through the new one-stop catering service. Event planning is now completely customer-oriented; you only need to make one call to get your event planned from beginning to end. A catering representative will even come to your place of work or can meet you outside of office hours when you call 253-964-1209. Turn to the feature on pages 12 and 13 to learn more about one-stop catering.

total transformation in party and event planning has arrived at JBLM. The new American Lake Conference Center — featuring its one-stop catering service — is taking off like a rocket. Both the new facility and the catering operation are aiming straight toward first-class service and status.
Amazing space and view Caterer Amy Parris sweeps her hand toward one of the spacious rooms as she explains: “This place isn’t just for serving catered food, though. It’s a real conference center ready to handle any function — team-building events, dances, promotions, workshops, bazaars, weddings, change of command ceremonies, you name it!” Indeed, the conference center is completely outfitted for any type of event. According to Tammy Hite, ALCC manager, the rooms can be reconfigured to allow multiple events to be held at the same time in adjacent areas with no noise spill. State-of-the-art projectors and screens, integrated sound systems, sliding walls, portable bars, a food delivery system, The grounds at American Lake Conference Center are perfect for lakeside entertaining, including a dock, pavilion and conversational seating area around a fire pit.
ADA compliance and more make ALCC comparable with the best conference centers anywhere. “Think of it as movable, versatile space,” Hite says. “You won’t be able to tell there’s a completely different function going on next door, even when the sound system is in use.” Even with all that, ALCC’s most attractive feature immediately captures the eye. Both upper and lower levels command a sweeping view of American Lake. Combine the view with a lakeside flower garden, gazebo, conversation area around a fire pit, flagstone walkways and a new dock outside the lower-level sunroom, and you have perfection.
Just one step sets your event in motion
in place and have set new standards throughout our eateries,” says Roger Disbrow, Business Operations Director. “Our guests can expect the same quality experience every time, no matter which location is catering their event.” Jason Barnett, executive chef, adds, “Our vision is to give you the best available menus that we create in-house. We’re taking it all to the next level — the preparation, presentation and quality — we’re setting the same high standards at each location.” With the integrated planning system, managers at other venues, such as The Bistro at Russell Landing or Eagles Pride Golf Course, can access the catering schedule to see what’s being planned at their facility in coming months. For more information or to inquire about booking your function, call 253-964-1209. American Lake Conference Center is located at 8085 NCO Beach Rd. at Lewis North.
When you’re handed the responsibility of planning an event, you won’t need to call around JBLM for availability or wonder if you chose the right menu or spot. All you’ll do is call the central catering office and arrange to meet with a caterer. The time and location will be at your convenience, even if you want to meet at your office or after work hours. MWR’s centralized catering office can provide services for any JBLM customer, whether you’re planning an intimate wedding or a unit party. Q: Who can you turn to for guidance on your financial situation without worrying about what’s in it for them?

hile teaching the teen financial classes, I often pose the question of who could live without having money and how would you do it? Since the teens attending still rely mainly on their parents to provide the basic necessities of shelter, clothing, education, food and water, plus some of the not-so-important items such as spending money, extracurricular school activities and entertainment, the majority of the attendees don’t have a clear concept of what life is really like when it comes to financial matters. Due to their limited financial exposure, some of the answers I get are quite interesting. One student stated he wasn’t that interested in money because he was going to become a hermit, live in a cave, hunt and grow his own food and make his own clothes. I’ve read about some people who try to pursue this type of lifestyle, but it’s most definitely the exception and not the rule. What do you do, then, to keep your Family on a path that could help prevent extreme financial difficulty? If you’re already experiencing financial hardship, where do you find ways to help turn the tide? Who can you turn to — someone

you can trust — for guidance on your financial situation without worrying about what’s in it for them? The answer lies right at your doorstep in the form of the Financial Readiness Program at JBLM. The program provides experienced financial counselors who can help with myriad issues. Since the counselors are government employees, the services they provide can be viewed as one of the benefits of being in the military. The one-on-one counseling services are confidential, covering everything to include: • Debt management: Learn techniques to become debt-free. • Retirement planning: How much is needed when retirement in the golden years looms? • Credit report review and repair: Instead of paying a credit repair attorney or organization hundreds or thousands of dollars, FRP counselors can help you achieve the same results with no fees attached. This is a popular service, especially when the purchase of a house or vehicle is in sight and your credit score needs to be higher. It’s also a great service if there are security clearance concerns.
• Credit management: Learn how to build your credit efficiently and effectively. This service complements the credit report review and repair. FRP counselors also help with consumer complaints, issues arising from fraudulent business practices, identity theft, home buying versus renting comparisons, home buying questions and concerns, buying a car, insurance, money management and student loan issues. Living life in the woods and caves as a self-sufficient hermit might seem like the answer to not having to worry about money, but as I look around and see the number of cell phone, tablet, iPad and iPod users, I know that learning how to become financially fit should be at the top of the list. If becoming a hermit isn’t at the top of your list, call Army Community Service at 253-967-1453 or the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 253-982-2695 to make a confidential, specialized appointment to meet your goals. Services are available to active duty military, retired military, Family members who are ID card holders and government civilian employees.
