In Conversation with Sara Hannant Wednesday 6 May | Bar open 6.30pm | Event starts at 7.30pm | £5 Photographer Sara Hannant joins local history guide and speaker, Joe Studman to talk about her latest exhibition ‘Numinous’ and the inspiration behind the work. Discussion will explore folklore and spirituality and promises to be an entertaining and lively look at the latest exhibition, and Q & A.

Numinous Wed 8 April – Sun 19 July Sara Hannant’s photography is inspired by the tradition of offering votive rags at the Holy Wells of Cornwall. Wells have long been regarded as sacred places and there remains a firm belief that wishing at wells can magically transform events. Pieces of fabric or ribbons from clothing, sometimes called a ‘cloutie’, are tied to trees. As the clouties fall and re-enter the earth so your wishes are fulfilled. Some clouties do not bio-degrade. Sara's work investigates materials to create abstract images that combine ritual with metaphors of spiritual transformation.

May half-term Forty Hall Folklore! Thursday 28 May | 11am – 1pm and 2pm – 4pm | £5 on the day / £4 advance booking Explore the exhibition ‘Numinous’, and search around the Hall for folklore creatures. Superstition, Beliefs & Folklore Wednesday 15 July | Bar open 6.30pm | Event starts 7.30pm £5 Sir Nicholas Rainton was a Puritan. The Reformation also encouraged attacks on anything considered superstitious including Catholicism. Secret connections: Dowland, Byrd, Tallis and Shakespeare Friday 17 July | 6.30pm bar open | concert starts at 7.30pm | £12

The Lovekyn Consort return to the Hall this summer to illustrate the semi-secret culture of Elizabethan devotional songs, theatrical airs and arrangements of sacred music along with coded references in Shakespeare’s texts. English history from Elizabeth I’s accession to the deposition of Charles I was marked by large religious, cultural and political changes as well increasing engagement with the New World. Some prominent writers and musicians shared a culture of more or less discrete Roman Catholicism, which shaped theatrical traditions and music in ways which have only recently been appreciated. The Lovekyn Consort are Patricia Hammond (Alto), William Summers (Renaissance Flute, Recorder) and Stephen Carpenter (Lute, Renaissance Guitar). The musicians will play authentic instruments from the time of the composition.

BLOCK4 Saturday 18 July | 6.30pm bar open | concert starts at 7.30pm | £12 Highly praised by the Royal College of Music, BLOCK4 are a London based recorder quartet featuring Emily Bannister, Lucy Carr, Katie Cowling and Rosie Land.
