Shakespeare FOR THE GAME OF THRONES GENERATION 22 – 23 FEBRUARY 7.30PM, 1.15PM MATINEE FEBRUARY 23 TICKETS £16, £14 CONCS, £10.50 SCHOOL GROUP

Jonathan Lovett There’s a cartoon called ‘If Hamlet Was Written Today’ featuring Hamlet sitting in front of a computer – probably on Facebook – asking himself, “To like…or not to like…” The genius of arguably the most famous play in the world is that it is timeless and can be appreciated by anyone, in any language – whether that be Elizabethans or Edwardians, Fijians or Facebookers. It has such a good plot that it has been adapted into a ridiculous variety of films including: Disney animation (The Lion King), a spaghetti western (Johnny Hamlet) and a Bollywood crime drama (Haider). While the dialogue is probably the most quoted of any Shakespeare play. Seizing on its constant topicality the Icarus Theatre Collective has billed its forthcoming take on

Dugdale THEATRE

Hamlet as, ‘Shakespeare for the Game of Thrones generation’. Complemented by a poster image of a crown dripping blood it’s a clever bit of marketing – guaranteed to draw the attention of a younger audience (there’s also a matinee production ideal for secondary schools) – but it also brings to the fore the essence of the play that is essentially an actionpacked revenge drama steeped in murder most foul. Icarus has good form in this brutal world view and in January scored two palpable hits at the Dugdale Centre in Enfield Town with its productions of The Trials of Galileo and At the Mountains of Madness. The first showed the astronomer contemplating his own mortality in the face of a hostile church while the latter was an atmospheric chiller about an Antarctic expedition gone wrong based on the HP Lovecraft horror.

Now this will be a par-tea to remember. We’re invited to join Oscar Wilde as he interviews leading celebrities of the Victorian era at the Dugdale. Expect the most witty and elegant of conversations to accompany those cucumber sandwiches as Victoriana specialists Don’t Go Into the Cellar perform Tea with Oscar Wilde on February 25, 2017. Hardy will play Hamlet’s uncle Claudius and the former al Shakespeare Company actor should remind us of the beauty of Shakespeare’s language in a verse-speaking masterclass that will hopefully balance the focus on the more dynamic, eye-catching elements of the play. Also, at a promised running time of just two-and-a-half hours (including an interval) this will be a far speedier version than your average Hamlet so there should be plenty of time to discuss it on social media later. The question is…what’s not to like?

Both took an uncompromising look at life and their slightly unusual subject matter was a perfect match for the adventurous company whose name is inspired by the ultimate risk-taker who flew too close to the sun. This Hamlet promises to be as equally as bold and again stars Tim Hardy who dominated proceedings in both of the previous plays.

For many folk Anton Chekhov is synonymous with bittersweet plays featuring melancholy characters drinking tea. But Chekhov’s Shorts – comprising an entertaining evening of his oneact farces – proves the Russian dramatist could also do comedy rather well. The European Arts Company performs at the Dugdale on February 28 and March 1, 2017.

Toploader IN THE EARLY YEARS OF THE LAST DECADE YOU WOULD HAVE TO HAVE BEEN LIVING ON THE MOON TO HAVE BEEN UNAWARE OF TOPLOADER’S MASSIVE, LIFE-AFFIRMING HIT DANCING IN THE MOONLIGHT. Between 2000 and, say, 2003 the incredibly catchy song seemed to be played on every radio station, in every shopping centre and on every TV advert, and one national newspaper even named it the feel-good song of the entire noughties. For a time singer Joseph Washbourn’s curly locks - bouncing up and down in time to his enthusiastic piano-playing in the song’s video – became the most famous hair in Britain and his band was quickly catapulted into the stratosphere, selling two million records, performing for the Queen at her Golden Jubilee, and becoming a household name. “When we play it live people still go mental and it’s a wonderful thing to see,” said Joseph. “My mum came to see us perform it a couple of years ago and she couldn’t believe it. She said, ‘That song is like a drug’ because everyone was just going nuts! It’s funny because at the time half of the band were like, ‘There’s no way we’re releasing that’. But I’ve always been a bit of a gambler and I was like, ‘Come on and take a chance’. Yet none of us had a clue it would turn out to be the monster it became.” What many folk might not have been aware of was that Toploader’s hit was actually a cover of a

ENFIELD PRESENTS WINTER 2016

—6—

1972 single by the American rock band King Harvest. “We certainly didn’t advertise it as being a cover!” said Joseph, laughing. “But some people do get really offended by that which leaves me a bit confused as our version is pretty different from the original. Also, if you do a good version of it, it doesn’t really matter if something is a cover or not. We actually made contact with the guy who wrote it, Sherman Kelly, a couple of years back. We emailed him out of the blue and got a really sweet email back thanking us for making an old guy happy. He had written the song after getting badly beaten up. He was lying in hospital and imagined this beautiful, perfect place where everyone is dancing in the moonlight and everyone is happy and gets on. So it isn’t this dumb lyric; it was actually written about this utopian moment when this guy was at his lowest ebb and that gives a real tilt to it.” For King Harvest and Toploader Dancing in the Moonlight was easily their biggest hit. For the latter band the difficulty of living in the song’s monumental shadow rapidly became a bit of a burden. “We were signed by Sony who re-released Dancing two or three times over the course of about three years,” said Joseph. “In the end we had to tell them to actually delete it as we were making a new album and trying to get stuff played and people were still playing that song! So it did become a bit of an albatross to be honest.” Toploader’s debut album, Onka’s Big Moka – which included Dancing in the Moonlight and the fine song Achilles Heel – was a critical and commercial hit that remained in the top five of the UK Albums Chart for more than six months. While not quite an overnight success it was still a meteoric rise for a group of lads who had only

started playing together three years previously. So surely the early noughties must have been one heady time for Joseph and his pals? “Well,” said Joseph, pausing for a second. “To be honest, it was a really weird time for me because at about the same time I lost my brother. The success was something I had wanted for so long but it was also tragic what happened. I guess I kind of put my grief aside for some years. The day after his funeral we played Glastonbury. These days I probably would have cancelled that but we went ahead and I threw myself into work…Looking back now it was an odd time and it certainly wasn’t all easy-peasy but we did meet some amazing people and did some insane things.” These included one memorable weekend of headlining the V Festival and being the last British band to play the old Wembley Stadium… “Technically that’s true because we were supporting Bon Jovi who were the last actual band to play the old Wembley,” he said, chuckling. “But it was insane going back and forth between V and Wembley, playing in front of these tens of thousands of people. And the Queen’s Golden Jubilee was great fun. We were in the same room as Paul McCartney and we met Prince Charles but we didn’t say ‘Hello’ to the Queen. It’s funny because on the DVD you can see a line of people dressed quite smartly, and there we are in our scarves and leather jackets, and she comes along the line and looks down her nose at us and walks on! She probably thought we could have made a bit more effort to smarten up.” Big fame can lead to big problems, however, especially when the fame happens so quickly. Being signed to a major label was brilliant for a new band in terms of the clout the company could exert in promoting their work, but the

I THOUGHT WE WOULD NEVER GET BACK TOGETHER... machine needs feeding and it wasn’t long before Sony desired another album to replicate the first’s stellar success.“The second album was a rush job,” said Joseph. “We had been put under a load of pressure by the record company to get on with it after spending an age constantly promoting the first album. We were all a bit burnt out and I certainly didn’t have the wealth of songs I have now. I am not one of these people who goes back to the hotel room and writes songs; I go back to the hotel room and pass out! Looking back I wish we had the balls to go, ‘We’re not ready to do this yet…we need some time’. To be honest that was the beginning of the end because we just went straight in and did it and there was a real kind of rift.” The result, Magic Hotel, was released in 2003 and was panned by the critics. Crucially it also failed commercially and the band split soon afterwards. Joseph went to America, wrote film scores and cut off those famous locks but in 2008 he found himself on guitarist Dan Hipgrave’s stag do,

ENFIELD PRESENTS WINTER 2016

drinking and talking into the early hours with the other band members. “I thought we would never get back together,” he said. “But on this occasion we were still chatting and any weird stuff had gone away for a while. In some respects it just didn’t feel like it should have even ended the first time around. I think we wanted to see if there was anything left.” Fortunately, for Toploader’s devoted fans, this led to a comeback album called Only Human (2011) and the band are now on the verge of releasing their fourth album funded entirely by fans. When we spoke the band had still not chosen a name for it but Joseph’s excitement was palpable. “Everyone who has heard it so far really like what we’ve done,” he said. “The album has a really nice vibe and some of it is quite poppy and some of it is a bit psychedelic. It’s full of strong songs and I think it’s probably what people know us for; that liked us for on our first album. I hope people love it and it would be great to get some stuff on the radio.

—8—

I believe that if you can just take people away from what they’re doing for 45 minutes and give them something else to think about then I think we’ve done a good job.” And besides being one of the first audiences to hear Toploader’s brand new material, those coming to the Millfield in February will also enjoy one of the best live bands on the circuit. It’s just a shame that these days the band refuse pointblank to play Dancing in the Moonlight at their gigs…only kidding! “It’s difficult to know where to put the song in our playlist as it’s a bit of a beast!” said Joseph, laughing. “You almost want to put it in its own half of the gig! But rest assured we will play it. We love playing live and never once on stage have I thought, ‘I’m just going through the motions here’. Weirdly we don’t do many gigs in London so the one at the Millfield is going to be a bit special and we’re really looking forward to it.”

It’s Panto Time…! Family Pantomime Millfield Theatre

ALADDIN, 24 – 31 DECEMBER VARIOUS TIMES TICKETS £XX

Marc Day

oh yes it is! TRADITIONAL PANTOMIME GROWS IN POPULARITY YEAR ON YEAR AT MILLFIELD THEATRE. AS ALADDIN OPENS THIS FESTIVE SEASON, WRITER AND DIRECTOR MARC DAY TAKES YOU BEHIND-THESCENES OF THE ANNUAL PRODUCTION TO LOOK AT ITS HISTORY AND GROWING POPULARITY AMONG NORTH LONDON AUDIENCES. The annual pantomime season at Millfield Theatre has been fundamental to the venue’s professional programme since opening its doors in 1988. Oh yes it has! The very first show to run at the theatre was Humpty Dumpty starring the Opportunity Knocks winner of 1972, Bobby Crush. Whilst Humpty was a pantomime title that has diminished in more recent times, the Millfield Theatre production was the start of years on years of successful pantomime at the muchloved North London venue.

ENFIELD PRESENTS WINTER 2016

— 10 —

Over the years, Millfield has produced most of the popular pantomime titles, from Jack & the Beanstalk to Dick Whittington, Cinderella to this year’s Aladdin. From a pantomime producer’s perspective, it is interesting to observe the changing trends. It cannot be ignored that the popularity of certain panto titles match those of current Disney releases whilst some lesser acknowledged titles such as Red Riding Hood find their own way back to the panto season listings around the British Isles. No surprise there then that Millfield is producing ‘Red Riding Hood’ for Hoxton Hall this December. In 2012 we extended our pantomime offering to include Easter Panto at the Dugdale, each year. This was at the start of a new trend in theatres offering a panto-style product for the school Easter holidays. Often I am asked ‘what is the difference’? Easter panto is on a smaller scale to match the smaller capacity of the Dugdale and provides us with an opportunity to rework favourite stories into the pantomime structure. Each performance is slightly shorter, running at around 90 minutes including interval compared to the 2 hours and 15 minutes including interval of our Christmas production. Therefore Easter panto can offer the opportunity for younger children to get a taste of panto, ready for when they are old enough to attend the larger Christmas show. ‘It’s behind you’, I am sure you will recall the times you have sat in a theatre around Christmas

time and found yourself prompted to shout out such phrases? ‘Oh yes it is’ and ‘Oh no he isn’t’, are other examples of the elements which when put together and wrapped around a popular story, with singing, dancing and comedy added forms what we now recognise as Pantomime. Creating a pantomime can feel at times like you are the curator of a precious historic jewel in a museum as some of the comedy routines and jokes (gags) we feature have roots that take us back to long before TV and a time when reality shows hadn’t even been thought about. A slight change to the order of words in the line can result in the joke having our lovely audiences in hysterics or the sense of tumbleweed as the gag fails.

Creating a pantomime can feel at times like you are the curator of a precious historic jewel in a museum Why do I believe the Millfield Pantomime continues to grow from that first production of Humpty Dumpty to this year’s Aladdin? The first part of my answer would be recognising that most years the Millfield Pantomime has been ‘home grown’; created at Millfield, from the writing to the building of the scenery which our team can then feel part and proud of. It often comes as a surprise when people discover that work for the next panto starts before the end of the current one. Familiar faces are key as I select performers from previous years to return from one year to the next, growing our own regular pantomime stars that are recognised

on the streets of Edmonton and Enfield during the season. Staying on the theme of ‘regulars’; a fundamental part of each year’s success are those audience members that remain loyal to our Christmas Panto, year on year. Just like some people will choose to always tune in at 3pm on Christmas Day to watch The Queen’s Christmas Day message, many of you choose to bring your families at the same time each year to watch the Millfield pantomime and with that in mind there is certainly a pressure to build on the strengths from previous years, to make the next better than its predecessor.

This year’s Aladdin features the return of Alex Scott Fairley and Philip Day from last year’s Cinderella and Chris Wills from Hansel & Gretel, The Little Mermaid and Pinocchio all previous Easter Panto’s at the Dugdale Centre. Behind the scenes will be Chris Burgess, who has played drums and worked as our Musical Associate for the past 9 years, along with Stuart Morley our Musical Supervisor who is fitting the Millfield Panto into a gap between conducting the new production of Big at Plymouth Theatre Royal and the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin. We look forward to seeing you at some point during the 62 performances of Aladdin!

• DID YOU KNOW?

?

• Over the course of a year, approximately 80 people are involved in creating the annual production. • The cast rehearse for only 9 days before the first performance. • Each year our pantomime usually features over 100 costumes, all looked after during the run by one person. • Next year the Millfield Pantomime will be Jack and the Beanstalk! Well you know now, ‘oh yes you do!’

WITH A…YOGA INSTRUCTOR When did you start practising yoga?

What are the benefits of yoga?

I started practising in the 1980s. After children I wanted something to do for myself in the evenings so I took yoga classes in Enfield. I started teaching yoga in 1993, even before I had finished my diploma at Enfield College, when an opportunity arose to teach a Tuesday evening class at Chace Community School.

It’s very hard to fit relaxation in to our busy lives. The posture work in yoga keeps you moving and controlled breath techniques help to alleviate stress by oxygenating the body. Yoga is a harmonious workout for the mind, body and soul! Another benefit of attending a yoga class is that many people make friends; it is as much as about the social side as it is the physical activity.

What type of yoga do you teach?

Kate Saunders

I teach Hatha Yoga, which is a traditional yoga that has informed many newer yoga styles over the years. Hatha Yoga is a classic type of yoga that encourages a healthy mind-body connection. We focus on posture work, relaxation and breathing; working with the body to achieve each pose and controlling the breath at the same time.

Can everyone take up yoga? Yes! So many people, especially men, believe that they must be flexible to practice yoga and that simply isn’t the case. It’s about working with your body and using the poses and breathing exercises to build self-awareness about your body.

What other exercise do you do? I play Badminton on a Monday and Friday and I enjoy the health benefits of walking. I use the physical activity to deepen my meditation practice.

Kate teaches yoga as part of ACTIVE ENFIELD on Mondays at St Andrew’s Parish Centre 4.30pm – 5.45pm (ladies only, all abilities)

Forty Hall

Children’s Activities

Discover fun and free family activities at Forty Hall!

Sian Carlisle

Sian Carlisle reviews the family learning offer at Forty Hall. Forty Hall’s Trail Bags and Hidden Chests are both free and aimed at children aged 4 – 11 years.

W

ith winter approaching it can be a challenge to find indoor fun for the kids that doesn’t cost a fortune. We discovered the children’s activities inside Forty Hall recently and they easily kept the family entertained for an afternoon! Forty Hall is a magnificent Grade I listed Jacobean Manor House in leafy north Enfield. The house has been sympathetically restored and some rooms are dressed in period style whilst others are used as exhibition and learning spaces. The grounds are spectacular too with gardens to explore, a woodland play area and a little farm.

rooms. The Key Stage 2 book also includes historical facts about the items. We used the Key Stage 1 bags and even though Imogen is only 2, she could get involved to an extent too.

The second chest has tactile bags with different fabrics, buttons and zips to play with – a great sensory activity for babies and toddlers as well as older children.

We started off in the Great Hall eager to find some of the trail items and were delighted to also find the first Hidden Trail Chest! There are four beautifully carved Jacobean style chests around the house and each contains props, activities, handling items and resources relevant to the house. Seren loved the books in the first box and Imogen was delighted with the small magnifying glass.

We also spent some time in the Family Room on this floor, it has comfortable seats for the grownups and games, books and dress-up for the kids.

To help families get the most out of their visit, the hall provides ‘Forty Small’ Trail Bags, Hidden Trail Chests, a range of hands on exhibitions and a Family Room too.

In the kitchen we found another exciting Hidden Trail Chest and hands-on activities such as making a 17th century Grand Salad with play food and pretending to stir drinks, churn butter and light the kitchen fire.

The Trail Bags come in two age ranges, Key Stage 1 (ages 5-7) and Key Stage 2 (ages 8-11). Each bag each contains a set of binoculars and a little book with photos of things to find in various

Kitchen duties finished, we retired upstairs to find more Trail items and two more Hidden Trail Chests. The first chest was full of hats to try on and Seren loved pretending to be the Mayor.

— 15 —

On the second floor we found a small dressup section inspired by the Tudor princes and princesses, who stayed at the nearby Elsying Palace (long gone), and their horse-riding and falconry hobbies. By this point the children were keen to run around outside in the late afternoon sunshine so we handed back our Trails Bags having mostly finished the trail. We spent 90 minutes inside the house and there are plenty of things we didn’t get to properly investigate in the Hidden Trail Chests so more then enough to keep us busy next time!

Admission to Forty Hall is free (£5 deposit is required for trail bags). WINTER 2016 ENFIELD PRESENTS

Backstage with The Opera Boys

Millfield Theatre Music

Jonathan Lovett

SPEND TEN MINUTES IN THE COMPANY OF MICHAEL STORRS AND RICHARD COLVIN AND ANY PREJUDICES YOU MIGHT HAVE THAT OPERA IS AN ELITIST ART FORM VANISH AS QUICKLY AS THE PHANTOM IN HIS OPERA HOUSE.

The two singers are so good-humoured and down to earth and speak passionately about opera being accessible for everyone. “You should absolutely make it accessible,” said Michael. “And try and get more people through the doors so they can enjoy it because it’s the most beautiful music. Sometimes it just needs to be shown in a slightly more relaxed way which doesn’t take away the quality at all. When you hear the name, ‘Opera Boys’ you would expect a lot of classical and operatic music. And you do get all of that but you also get four guys having fun. We always have something unexpected going on…usually from Rich…” “Yeah, we did a show once where I nearly put on a dress,” explained Richard, laughing. “We had a debate on stage over whether or not I should be allowed to put on a dress if I really wanted to. The show overran by about 15 minutes but it was a lot of fun! Unlike perhaps some other classical acts we are as ENFIELD PRESENTS WINTER 2016

entertaining and we are accomplished. The singing is great and the music is undeniably beautiful, but we are also a very entertaining bunch of guys.” They certainly are. Over our 50-minute long chat I can rarely remember laughing so much in an interview. As you would probably have gathered the Opera Boys are no ordinary group of classical singers. Performing a winning combination of opera standards, classically arranged pop songs and even film scores the ‘boys’ have been seen all over the world in a bewildering variety of countries, venues and cruise ships. But it’s not just the more mainstream, populist programme that has seen fans return again and again…it’s the jokey interaction in-between songs which must surely go a long way to defusing any audience member’s concerns that the evening ahead of them will be too highbrow. “Once we got a lady up on stage because it was her birthday and we dragged on a stool — 16 —

for her to sit on,” explained Richard, laughing. “But the stool was broken so every time we let her go she would slowly revolve! (All of us are now laughing) So we kept turning her back around again…but the moment we let her go she would revolve around again. And eventually a stage hand ran on and hid behind the stool and… (with difficulty) …and had to crouch down and hold the stool in place (Michael is now crying with laughter) …and as we started talking he would angle her towards whoever was speaking! The singing wasn’t great because we were all in tears!” All of these anecdotes; all of the jokes and good-natured humour would count for little, however, if the boys didn’t possess a depth of talent that qualifies the group’s claim of boasting, ‘The UK’s finest classically trained tenors.’ Scottish-born Richard trained at the Royal Academy of Music and was the lead in the musical The Hired Man on Broadway. Michael

went to the Utrecht Conservatoire (he’s half Dutch) then the Royal Academy and then…Eurovision! In an unexpected development he represented Belgium in last year’s finals finishing a very respectable fourth. “A friend of mine from the Academy went to Belgium and became a vocal coach on their version of The Voice,” he said, explaining how a Dutch/Australian came to represent Belgium. “He called up a few of his mates to perform a song, Rhythm Inside, and it turned into the best four weeks of my life!

all I’m saying!’” Now looking forward to their second major tour the Opera Boys will shortly be heading into the rehearsal studio and the results can be seen at the Millfield Theatre at the start of February. Without spoiling the surprise too much I wondered what would be in store for the music-lovers of north London? “We’ve got a couple of new songs that we might be bringing in for the tour,” said Richard. “And we haven’t sang Caruso in a long time so we

When you hear the name, ‘Opera Boys’ you would expect a lot of classical and operatic music. And you do get all of that but you also get four guys having fun It was a bonkers thing to be a part of but the final was one of the best live concerts I have ever been to.” “I’ve been sending my CV to every European capital for the last six months and I still haven’t heard anything back!” added Richard. “Perhaps I’ll try the Federated States of Micronesia because they have about 600 islands so surely one of them would want me to represent them!” Three years ago both of them received a call from fellow singer Robert Cherry who was putting together a group…and the rest, as they say, is history. “When he was putting together the group Rob decided to call people he knew which, to be honest, is usually the best way to do it,” said Michael. “Because then you at least know that you’ve got people who are dependable and who enjoy each other’s company. It’s not just about someone who is talented, it’s about getting on with each other, and that’s part of the show – four guys who get on and have a good laugh together.” And there are never any arguments, no fallings out? “Obviously when Michael get an audition for ‘the tall, good-looking one’ I phone my agent and ask a few questions!” said Richard, laughing. “But then my agent goes, ‘Richard? You know we really like you…? You’re five foot seven…that’s

might put that in.” “There are a few immediately recognizable songs that people will know and love and expect us to sing like the big, Italian numbers such as Nessun Dorma,” said Michael. “And then we have some really interesting takes on songs, particularly film music. People might recognise the melody but not necessarily where it’s from.”

And, in a final, thoughtful touch, audience-members will be able to tell the boys exactly what they thought of the show as they leave the venue. “We always finish the show and run around at great speed to the front of the house to stand by the door and say, ‘Goodbye’”, said Michael. “That’s how it used to be in the days of variety and music hall,” added Richard. “When Laurel and Hardy finished playing a London venue there are reports of them running around to the exit to say farewell to everyone.” “It’s personable and there’s no reason not to,” said Michael. “We don’t have any airs or graces or feelings of being elusive artists. For us it’s lovely to meet the public as well.”

Athena laughs

Summer Sporting Success This is why we are force fed sport. Hosepipe bans used to mark the start of summer. In their absence, what better way to remind us that it’s ‘go outside and play’ season by watching people who literally get paid to go outside and play?

Athena Kugbleno

How are we supposed to know when it’s summer when the weather can’t make its mind up? This year the sun came out in 48-hour bursts whilst the rain overstayed its welcome.

Sport satisfies us when the weather fails to do so. Andy Murray met our expectations by winning Wimbledon and Olympic gold; the England football team met our expectations by booking an early flight home from France. That’s as good a hint as any that we used to have Frisbee that we threw once, perhaps when we last had a hosepipe ban. Somewhere. I would be surprised if anyone in Enfield hasn’t at least flirted with sport, whether it’s disc chucking to the dog at Forty Hall or a jog on the outdoor treadmill in Ponders End Park (try it; it’s peculiar and amazing to run on the spot in a park). Our varied sporting landscape has borne varied fruit. We’ve produced Olympic medalists in high jumping, dressage and kayaking. High jumping could be argued to be dressage without the horse, but to win a gold in kayaking, coming from a place with as much rough water as an electric shower, that’s random.

won silver in Rio in the men’s 4 x 100m relay. We have five swimming pools. In Enfield, swimming pools outnumber branches of Starbucks and Pret-a-Manger combined. And we’re in London! Local lady Desiree Henry came back from Rio clutching a bronze from the 4 x 100m relay. Probably thanks to the Lee Valley Athletics Centre but next time I see her, I’m going to ask if she’s had a go on my favourite piece of outdoor apparatus in Ponders End too. If you’re feeling inspired, why not go outside and play yourself? Enfield might not have sun, but we have heated pools. Who needs the sea when we have reservoirs? And we certainly don’t need sand; grass volleyball is going to be big in Tokyo 2020, trust me. We’ve got elite sport and state of the art facilities on our doorstep. And now we’ve got remarkable success stories to show us how far we can go without having to go very far at all. It’s not always good news, which brings me back to our footballers. If achievement ignites us, disappointment should not disillusion. If you’re still thinking about that Iceland game, dwell no longer. To the best of my knowledge, none of those guys were born in Enfield, anyway.

If you can’t excel at a random sport in Enfield, then where can you? Joe Clarke (kayak gold medalist) was a bus ride away from the Lee Valley White Water Centre and that means you are too. I understand London 2012 bronze medalist Robbie Grabarz perfected high jumping while boarding trains at Edmonton Green. If you’ve not had the pleasure, I recommend wearing loose clothing. Millfield Theatre Comedy

Come Mek We Larf 12 FEBRUARY VALENTINES DAY SPECIAL 7.45PM TICKETS £16 / 15 ONLINE

Victoria Sanderson

“THERE’S NO EASIER WAY TO FIND LOVE THAN THROUGH LAUGHTER.” MR CEE

ENFIELD PRESENTS WINTER 2016

Comedy show Come Mek We Larf is back at Millfield Theatre for a second Valentine’s Special, featuring a quality line-up of the very finest in African Caribbean comedy. — 20 —

Host Mr Cee is looking forward to bringing together the energetic Kane Brown and observant Felicity Ethnic for an evening of hilarity on Silver Street: “It’s going to be a great night”, said Cee. “Kane’s one of my favourite comedians at the moment, I love his energy. He’s cheeky yet charming and he’ll talk about relationships from a very strong man’s point of view”. “To counteract that we’ve got Felicity Ethnic, who is a champion for women’s views in a relationship”, Cee continued. “She’s strong, she’s empowering and any man who wants to open their mouth whilst she’s performing; well I feel sorry for them because they’re going to get what they deserve”! The final addition to February’s line-up is Black Comedy’s No. 1 Diva and Bajan Dancehall Queen, ‘Dibbi’. The brainchild of comedian Wayne Rollins, the cross-dressing comedic character ‘Dibbi’ boasts a great stage presence and always goes down a storm with audiences. “Everyone loves Dibbi”, explains Cee. “Wayne Rollins’ comedy skills in delivering Dibbi are second to none – you see both

the physicality of a man with a beard and the embodiment of a female character. You just don’t know what’s going to happen next with Dibbi”. While a comedy show might not be your first choice of outing to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year, Cee argues it’s the perfect night out, whether you are coupled up or not. “Treat your partner to a night of comedy this year, get them to relax those shoulders” encouraged Cee. “If you’re single then come along too because you might just find love here. There’s no easier way to find love than through laughter and, you never know, you might be sitting next to your future husband or wife”. Said like a true promoter, it is Cee’s natural gift for marketing combined with a genuine passion for comedy that has seen Come Mek We Larf run for over 18 years with stints at Cork’s Wine Bar in the West End, The Players Club in East London and, more recently, a residency at The Library at Willesden Green. Starting out as a comedian in 1998 and on the lookout for open mic nights, Cee quickly discovered that most venues offered only 3 to 5 minute spots for new comedians. Frustrated by this Cee seized an opportunity at Cork’s Wine Bar to revive a regular comedy night there and, so, Come Mek We Larf was born. The night promised a platform for emerging comedians to showcase their work with 15 – 20 minute slots while also profiling different styles of comedy; an ethos that continues to this day.

Humour is all we’ve got sometimes; it binds us together as people in the most simplistic of forms. explained Cee. “For us newbies it was a regular spot that we could perform at each month. Back then we mixed it up and featured poets and singers. Some of the now-greats passed through those doors, including Estelle and Floetry who also cut their teeth there. We would always finish the show with a headliner comedian, however, and I would host it”. It was through the production of Come Mek We Larf that Cee honed his hosting technique whilst learning necessary skills for putting on a successful show including discovering new talent, booking acts and marketing. “You’ve got the audience, you’ve got the artists and then you have the promotional team. All three have to be happy for a show to work. There’s no point having a great show if no one’s there to see it and it’s pointless having an audience when you don’t a great show for them. It’s important to have a product that people want to come back for time and time again”.

Come Mek We Larf continues to grow in popularity at Millfield Theatre, proving that the show format is a product that people want to come back for. However, Cee believes that the show’s popularity can also be attributed to the open-mindedness of Enfield audiences. “The support of the audience at Millfield has been great” said Cee “They’ve come out and have been really receptive to different styles of comedy. While the majority of the audience is African Caribbean there are people from all different cultures that come through the doors at Edmonton which I love. In a place like Enfield which is so diverse, the people here are comfortable with one another already; so when they see something they want to go and see, they go. They don’t feel alienated which is refreshing for us as comedians, especially black comedians. After all, there’s so much more that we share in common as people and, at the end of the day, everybody loves to laugh”. “Humour is all we’ve got sometimes; it binds us together as people in the most simplistic of forms” continued Cee. “We all need to leave all our cares and worries at the door of Millfield Theatre; this is a place where we can Come Mek We Larf after all”.

Active Enfield

This girl can... Will you? I am a self-confessed culture vulture. It is surprising therefore that one of the most inspiring things I watched in 2016 was not a play or a film; it was a presentation by Sport England’s Head of Brand and Digital, Kate Dale about the success of sports marketing campaign ‘This Girl Can’.

Victoria Sanderson

If the campaign has passed you by (um, where have you been hiding?) then let me fill you in. Based on powerful insight, ‘This Girl Can’ got 2.8 million women exercising with a groundbreaking, fresh and honest portrayal of physical activity that reshaped the language around women and exercise. Sports participation in England suffers from a considerable gender gap; 2m fewer 14- to 40-year-old women than men play sport regularly despite the fact that 75% of women say they want to be more active. Sports England needed to understand the reasons for this gap and they found their answer through extensive market research; a fear of judgement is the primary barrier holding women back from participating in sport. Women raised fears over lack of ability, appearance and choosing to spend time on themselves, rather than on their families; it was actually easier to avoid exercise then deal with the emotions stirred up. Equipped with this insight Sport England set

about creating a campaign that celebrated women who had successfully managed or navigated their barriers and were getting active on their own terms. ‘This Girl Can’ normalised sport by using ‘real women’ of differing shapes, sizes and abilities as models. Accompanying straplines were sassy; “If at first you don’t succeed, freestyle”, “Sweating like a pig,` feeling like a fox”, “I jiggle, therefore I am”, “My gameface has lipstick on” and (my personal favourite) “I kick balls. Deal with it.” Empowering huh? ‘This Girl Can’ left an impression on me for two reasons. Firstly, as an arts marketeer I have a professional interest in successful marketing campaigns that really ‘speak’ to their intended audience. Secondly, and more importantly, this campaign resonated deeply with me on a personal level; why am I not exercising more? I questioned myself. When I ask myself this question normally my go-to excuse is always that I am ‘too busy’. When I reflect upon the question this time round (and actually ‘get real’ with myself) I am genuinely surprised by my answers. Yes, I used to have a gym membership but I cancelled it because I wasn’t using it enough to justify the monthly cost (‘too busy’, see?). In all honestly, I could have made the time; I wasn’t making the most of it because I simply wasn’t

Everyone knows that exercise is good for our physical and mental health

enjoying it. I wasn’t enjoying it because, deep down, I really wanted to attend the group classes but I was only using the gym, exercising alone (and getting bored). Why hadn’t I joined one of the classes? I asked myself. Then it dawned on me loud and clearly: I hadn’t enrolled because I didn’t think I’d be good enough. Wow. There you have it. I have always preferred playing team sports over exercising alone; the social interaction makes it far more enjoyable for me and I find that I push myself harder. Yet here I was, avoiding the type of physical activity I enjoy because of a fear of judgement. I have since tackled this fear head on by joining a few group classes. So far I’ve hula hooped (yes, it is as fun as it sounds, no you don’t use your hips), spinning (the struggle is real my friend) and I’m looking forward to January’s Pilates course with Active Enfield (hope to see some of you there). Everyone knows that exercise is good for our physical and mental health but lots of us aren’t participating as much as we should. Have you asked yourself lately ‘why am I not exercising more?’ Are you avoiding exercise out of a fear of judgement (be it yours or those of others)? Getting clear about what those fears and barriers are will allow you navigate them and formulate an action plan that is rewarding and works for you. As we move in to 2017 many of us will be thinking about getting fit and shaping up so here are my top tips for navigating some common fitness fears: — 23 —

WINTER 2016 ENFIELD PRESENTS

“I don’t have enough time” We lead busy lives with jam-packed schedules overflowing with family and work commitments so, yes, time is a very real barrier. Use a little creativity to build some exercise in to your day. Can you get up earlier to fit in a ‘pre-work’ workout? Could you use your lunch hour to go for a brisk walk or could you ditch the car and walk to work instead? Is it possible to re-shape some of your family time so that you build in regular bike rides or swimming sessions with the kids? Check out Enfield Active’ Move More Campaign for bite-sized tips on getting fit by being active for 10 minutes, three times a day. “Exercise is expensive” It doesn’t have to be. Enfield Active offers a range of low-cost options when it comes to working out in the borough. Visit the website to explore the affordable programme of group classes available to residents or take advantage of one of the flexible membership packages offered by Fusion at the borough’s leisure centres. At home, why not buy a DVD for a work-out in your living room or visit the Enfield Council website to discover which of the borough parks near you offers a free gym? “Exercise is boring” If you have not stuck to a regular exercise programme so far, chances are that you have not found the right type of physical activity for you; and, of course, you’re not going to spend time or money on things you don’t enjoy! There is no “one size fits all” approach when it comes to sport; you have to identify what fits best with your lifestyle and works best for your individual tastes. Why not explore the ‘Try before you buy’ taster sessions and gym passes on offer (I’ll be cha cha cha-ing to Active Enfield’s Ballroom & Latin Dance taster session soon…). Bring a friend along to gossip with while working your glutes on the cross trainer or simply mix up your routine (Take a leaf out of my fitness programme and try a range of classes to keep boredom at bay). “I’m worried about my appearance” I once wore light grey leggings to the gym; if I can get over that embarrassment you can too! We all sweat and no one looks their finest at the gym. Fact. Just accept that and let it go. Pat yourself on the back for getting yourself off the couch and in to the gym; you’re making a commitment to your health and your confidence will grow in time. If you’re still feeling self-

Visuals kindly provided by This Girl Can

conscious why not go solo at home first and buy an exercise DVD or, failing that, promote a trusted friend to the role of fitness buddy! Not only will you encourage one another but you can be silly together and have a laugh too. Can we help bust your barriers? Active Enfield endeavours to increase participation in sports across the borough so that, you too, can enjoy the benefits of physical activity. There are ample opportunities to get active in Enfield, including: • Fusion offers seven leisure centres across Enfield, each offering state-of-the-art gym facilities and an exciting group class timetable. • Active Enfield offers affordable and accessible physical activity courses for borough residents throughout the community in schools and workplaces.

• Head to www.activeenfield.co.uk to find out more about Move More and get active for 10 minutes, 3 times a day. • A wide range of independent sports clubs and initiatives (if you are one, by the way, and want to appear on our website then please get in touch). Some barriers are real and we want to know about yours. If you have any ideas for courses that you wish to see as pat of the Active Enfield programme then let me know.

GERRY CROSS THE MERSEY In the early sixties, Gerry and the Pacemakers worked the same Liverpool/Hamburg circuit as the Beatles and many other groups before being signed in 1962 by manager Brian Epstein, as his second group after the Beatles. The following year, under the direction of producer George Martin, they burst on the scene with three consecutive No.1 hits –“How Do You Do It”, “I Like It” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” – proving themselves serious competitors to the Beatles. Over the next few years, most of the Pacemakers subsequent hits were actually written by Gerry Marsden, including “”It’s All Right”, “I’m the One”, “Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Cryin” and “Ferry Cross the

Mersey”(also the name of a film in which they starred). The group disbanded in 1966 but was reformed by Gerry in 1974. COMEDIAN CHRIS MARCO K’S SHOW ABOUT THE PERILS OF ONLINE DATING WAS A SOLDOUT HIT AT THE DUGDALE LAST SEASON. IT WAS SO POPULAR IN FACT, THAT IT’S BACK THIS FEBRUARY AND IT’S BETTER THAN BEFORE. 50 Shades of K is high-energy 2-hour show that looks back on the dating experiences of Chris himself across several different dating sites. Using a variety of comedy styles to bring those experiences to life such as storytelling, one-liners, puns, singing and dancing, Chris even brings in visual elements to keep the humour high. ‘It’s a very visual show’ said Chris. ‘At one point I show a slide with a text message from a girl I oddly don’t speak to anymore. Let’s just say it’s a funny text message!’ The only Greek Cypriot comedian to be working at his level, Chris grew up in Enfield and this, his third show, follows ‘The Man that can’t be moved’ (Dugdale and Arts Depot, North Finchley) and the hugely popular ‘My Greek Life’, which gained great support locally. Packed full with observational comedy 50 Shades of K promises to be entertaining and laugh-a-minute; I’m intrigued to hear more, are you?

In contrast, a laid hedge becomes thick and bushy, providing effective boundaries for livestock and valuable wildlife habitats. Join us at Forty Hall Farm for a one-day introduction to hedge-laying. This hands-on course will combine the theory of hedge-laying with lots of practical experience out on the Farm. Course led by Clive Leeke. Saturday 10 December £55 per person. Both parishes had fairs from an early date but this talk also includes Victorian festivals that drew large crowds to Enfield. Wednesday 22 February, 7pm - 8pm Tickets: £5

Volunteering GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND IN ENFIELD

Paul Everitt

At the centre of that creativity our volunteers are pruning the shrubs, planting the bulbs and seeds that will grow and bloom into flowers in a future season, removing the weeds that are choking growth and shaping borders to create beautiful views. They pick up the litter that those that don’t care have carelessly discarded in the lawns and the flowerbeds and lovingly restore beauty and tranquillity back to its proper place.

They’ve checked that the aisles are clear of obstructions, they have practised an evacuation in case of emergency so that they can get you out of the building safely in under 2 minutes, they will show you to your seat and ask you politely not to record or photograph the show. These volunteers want you to have a wonderful time and they want you to come back again and again and be part of the Millfield family.

On most days at Forty Hall over the last 25 years you may have seen a man gently encouraging and coaching others how to run across Enfield’s most magnificent landscape. He does it voluntarily with only the desire to help others lead active and healthy lives.

At Forty Hall a group of volunteers are imagining a bygone era and bringing it back to life in the famous Candlelight Tours. They’ve done their research, they’ve hunted for costumes in charity shops and customised them. They’ve rehearsed for weeks to get it just right and they’re ready to bring history alive for the residents of Enfield to help them better understand their past to ensure a brighter future.

Tending the gardens, welcoming audiences, creating and organising OUR VOLUNTEERS ARE wonderful events, chaperoning MAGNIFICENT COMMUNITY our young people, supporting HEROES WHO CARE DEEPLY our disabled participants, ABOUT THEIR COMMUNITY ensuring our programmes AND STRIVE TO ENSURE THAT reflect the whole community COMMUNITY HAS CULTURE AT – there would be no culture ITS HEART. IF YOU’D LIKE TO or sport in Enfield without our JOIN US WE’D WELCOME YOU army of dedicated and loyal WITH OPEN ARMS. volunteers. There’s something magical in the heart of our volunteers. I don’t know whether it’s their active desire to contribute to making their community a better place, their passion for the place or activity they are supporting, their love of communicating with neighbours that they’ve never met before or simply a desire to do something different. Whatever the inspiration is that drives these wondrous individuals what they all have in common is a force of positivity.

As this magazine lands on coffee tables a woman will be putting the final touches on the Enfield Christmas Parade of Lights. She volunteers at many Enfield events whether it’s raising money for charity at the Enfield Town Show whilst providing tea hosted by the Mayor or providing sustenance at the Mayor’s Fun Run. Her simple desire is to bring the community together to have a positive shared experience whilst raising funds for a greater good.

When I enter the gates of Forty Hall in North Enfield or Millfield Theatre in Edmonton, which I do most days, I always feel a rush of joy at the beauty of magnificent historic buildings set in loved and tendered landscapes. They are peaceful places rich in history and bursting with creativity.

As you enter the building at Millfield Theatre you are greeted by men and women from all walks of life who are ensuring the environment is safe and above all friendly and welcoming.

Right across Enfield volunteers are making magical things happen in all sorts of places – at Talkies Community Cinema in Palmers Green, at Chickenshed in Cockfosters, at Face Front Inclusive Theatre in Edmonton Green and in Parks, Sports Clubs, Dance Schools and community centre’s in every corner of the borough. Our volunteers are magnificent community heroes who care deeply about their community and strive to ensure that community has culture at its heart. If you’d like to join us we’d welcome you with open arms. If you are looking for opportunities to learn new skills or meet new people in your local area in 2017 then volunteering could be for you. WINTER 2016 ENFIELD PRESENTS

Get to know…

BROOKE JAZZ LAWRENCE

AS TOLD TO VICTORIA SANDERSON

Enfield, for me, is… Where I grew up… I lived in Barnet but I went to school in Enfield. Life was where your friends were so I have fond memories of growing up with them there. It was the first place I was allowed to go on my own with them, shopping in Enfield Town on a Saturday!

Who inspires you? My mum, she does everything she can for me, and with such strength. She’s very motivating and my biggest fan when it comes to my music.

Was music always a passion of yours? I always wanted to sing and I started song writing at the age of 12 – songs about boys in the playground who I fancied but who didn’t fancy me back. I’ve always been drawn to break-up songs (even before I’d experienced one). At 18 I wrote a song titled ‘I’ll Never Get Married’ which I used to sing with a girlfriend on the tube. Even when I set out to write on a different theme, my songs will turn to love.

Best Valentine’s date? I have never been on a Valentine’s date – even when I’ve been with a boyfriend! So my dream date would ENFIELD PRESENTS WINTER 2016

be something fun, nothing too soppy, like paintballing in the film ’10 Things I Hate About You’. No boats though – I’d get seasick.

Bonnie Raitt. It’s one of those golden lines in songwriting; one of those ‘I wish I’d wrote that’ moments.

Last album you downloaded?

Your biggest accomplishment?

My Wild West by Lissie. She’s like an undercover Ellie Goulding. I love her passion. I love the way she really owns her music and believes in what she’s singing which a lot of artists aren’t doing these days.

Performing at TEDx Houses of Parliament. It was so scary but exhilarating too, just knowing that Lianne La Havas played the year before! I am used to playing to standing crowds who are drinking – this was a conference-style crowd at 11am so it was very different and it went really well.

Favourite place in Enfield? The shoe section in TK Maxx, Enfield Town without a doubt! I love shoes; as soon as I could speak the first thing I asked for at Christmas were shoes! I’ve also recently been catching up with my Enfield friends and we’ve been spending time in The George. It’s really cool; there’s a DJ, it’s cheap and the night finishes early so you’re back home at a good time.

Last book you read? A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. It’s an amazing read and follows the two Afgan women whose lives become intertwined through a series of traumatic events. It’s an empowering read for women.

Favourite love song? ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’ by

Best thing about your job? Everyday is different which is great. Being a music freelancer is a rollercoaster journey. You don’t always know what’s coming next but one thing leads to another and the highs are definitely very high.

Last telephone call you took? A call from my mum, of course, asking me when I am coming home and telling me that it’s raining (because I went out in shorts earlier)!

Best bit of advice you’ve been given? To just have fun, don’t be negative and live every moment like it’s your last. — 50 —
